I love my iPad! I work in film production as an assistant director and script supervisor. And I LOVE that I get to have three different ways to use my iPad for filmmaking. 1. desktop mode is great for pre-production. reading scripts, online meetings, making breakdowns, etc. I also use it for research and for watching movies and series. I use the magic mouse with my desk setup, and it works great for me, as I use my magic keyboard with my setup, thus allowing me to have a trackpad, a mouse, and still be able to use the pencil with it.

For me personally the experience with the latest ipad pro is so limited. I want to program software, do video editing and use mouse and keyboard. This is not fully supported as desktop applications on Windows. So for me, it is an extremely limited experience, which is frustrating because it already has the M2 chip that can do literally everything.
I agree, I’ve seen so many RUclipsrs claim that the iPad Pro is not a laptop replacement, but they never consider that we aren’t all content creators, video editors, photographers, digital artists, or app developers. We don’t have their complicated workflows requiring niche and advanced features for producing commercial-grade audiovisual projects. My home device is an iPad Pro and it’s my main device. I like it because it’s an always on experience. Now, with the Magic Keyboard it’s a laptop, with a folio case it’s a tablet, and I have it connected to a screen with a Bluetooth trackpad and keyboard for a near desktop experience.
Wow, you're the first person I've seen who actually highlights all of the quirks and shortcomings rather than glossing over. I was close to going this route over DeX (which I currently use daily), but DeX still seems pretty far ahead. I really wish MacOS were simply available on the iPad. Having an iPad Mini with an M1 and MacOS would be ideal for me.
Great video man! I thought your final point was really great. I love my iPad but it could never replace my laptop / PC. I’m not even a creative professional, just an average office worker in finance. My iPad goes everywhere with me from client meetings (for notes) to lounging by the pool. But it does not replace my ThinkPad and I wouldn’t really want it to. They are both great in their own way.
Weird as a got none of the bugs you seem to encounter! My second monitor is mainly for having cours or references as I draw and learn art with my iPad! Been loving my setup!
I’ve just started using my iPad with an external display and I share many of the frustrations you’ve experienced. My overall feeling is that it’s not quite ready for a user like me. On the plus side, many of these quirks can be fixed with software updates. Just a shame though that we’ll likely not see fixes for many of these issues until at least the next iteration of iPadOS in 2024.
EXCELLENT VIDEO 0:14 What is the Keyboard that you are using with this iPad... I am in the midst of buying an iPad... but I want THIS kind of keyboard. Thank you for sharing this great video...
Great video! I’ve been looking at a similar setup for my iPad Air M1. As a web developer I mainly use cloud based text editors so nothing too taxing on the cpu, but having a dual screen setup would make life so much easier
I think you hit the nail on the head: the iPad is “adaptive.” It wasn’t built to be a desktop or laptop replacement, but with accessories and some tinkering, you can mimic some laptop and desktop functionality using the iPad. This is for ppl that primarily want an iPad, yet may have some desktop/laptop needs. Simple
As a Samsung tablet user, this makes me excited to see how far iPads are progressing in this space. The better Apple does, the more Samsung wil improve it's DeX mode. This type of progress promotes great competition. Cheers to all tech lovers!
I have been using a very similar setup and find it works really well, with a few niggles The niggles with Stage Manager are mainly that it is a different UI
Hooking up your tablet to an extra monitor is a niche but it's something I am using. I don't have an ipad anymore, but really considering ipad again. I currently use Samsung dex on my phone and hook it up to a monitor on my working desk. It's nice and portable and can bring my own personal computer with me everywhere.
I am blessed to be able to run two desk setups. One is a 34” ultrawide I push with my M2 MacBook Air. I LOVE it. My second setup, completely different, is a 27” I run with my 11” M1 iPad Pro. For Video work, IT work, or if I need to get a lot done in a session, I usually default to my MacBook Air at my desk with my iPad set up as companion. Not as another display, but with keyboard and mouse linked if I need it but I usually use it for notes and quick reference. For admin work, knocking out some things on my “day off” or personal things, I usually use my iPad. My iPad is usually my device I will grab if I can only bring one too (quick trip out, coffee shop, etc.) IF iPad was able to remote into other Mac’s (like ARD) without needing me to remote into a Mac mini with Team Viewer, then use ARD from there, I would go all iPad again. Did it for years, LOVED it. Keep up the FANTASTIC content, my friend!
Bro, I copied your desktop setup at my home 😊 and it was very helpful 🙏. I used to have neck pain when my ipad was side of monitor. My neckpain completely gone now after having the ipad just in front of me and it feels more productive working in this desktop setup. Thanks a lot for sharing 🙏and helping all ❤🙏
Excelent video! About the sound, I'm a musician, and went fully iPad pro M2 for all my computing needs. iPad chooses the last audio device connected. For volume control on the app itself, some devices or audio interfaces take over, and some don't, it seems that your display does that, and the airpod is just annoyingly taking over every time you take it out of the box, keep them in the box! And yes, it is time allready that we get full screen display compatibility. In the end, everything is speedy and snappy and powerfull for Cubasis ( sorry, Logic Pro is not for me ), all my Physical modeled instruments, large sample Lybraries, synths, and all sorts of plug-ins, as well as luma-fusion, wich does provide full-screen on preview! Lightroom and all daylly apps works flawlessly. I'm using a keyboard with trackpad integrated, couldn't be happier. I'm glad they went in a different way then the Mac. It was a fresh start, and now its becoming mature.
Glad you did this video. I’m sure it’s been mentioned in other videos but, your video was the first one I’ve seen about certain apps still not going full screen. I was considering upgrading my iPad soon for the external display support. Never mind on that now!!!! I’ll save my money and just keep what I have.
i totally agree with the “annoying things” also there need to be alot more keyboard shortcuts ex: there is need to a hotkey to move the an app from display to ipad or vice versa
Really love the color grading in your videos. Do you have a tutorial or any tips? Also a “color grading on iPad” video would be great if you haven’t done one already.
I LOVE THIS TEST! lol I would LOVE if the ipad could really replace the laptop. it's just so cumbersome when ur traveling with a full size laptop + camera gear and a million other things.
9:40 my workaround for this is just delete the apps you want to use on the web. RUclips for example is uninstalled from my iPad, I only use the web version.
Thank you for making this amazing video and for focusing so well on the shortcomings of the iPad Pro, I’ve been there also… you got yourself another subscriber. I have now managed to fully move away from the iMac and Macbook Pro experience and I am a 100% iPad Pro user for all of my daily tasks. I had to adapt of course but the more I use this set up, the happier I am for switching over. I use an M1 16Gb 1Tb iPad Pro 12.9” with a Brydge 12.9 Max+ Keyboard & Trackpad magnetic case alongside with or without the external screen, connect via a USB-C Hub Pro. I like the portability of the Macbook Pro rather the desktop only iMac type (but had bothered and got right of both) but the fact that the iPad Pro has the touch screen (using the apple pencil is a dream) and also the cellular support, it is a complete game changer. Also, quite soon wee will be having the possibility to sideload apps as per the European directives, this will indeed bring more advantages to use an iPad as an all in one machine. Very soon, iPads will become more and more capable and flexible to use 😉 Looking forward to your next video in a few months time sharing new experiences after the next iOS update.
Thank you!! I have this setup but at my home desk but haven't really taken the time to use it much since iOS 17. Seeing you video is motivating. Also, thanks for the tips and tricks. Question: how do you use app launch with spotlight where the app opens in the current screen without pushing everything to Stage Manager?
Really helpful, thanks. 11" pro is my first, sidecar (and spacedesk from windows, with touch and pen) is great but no extended desktop in the other direction is a dealbreaker so far. Your notes on missing full screen apps and early bugs affirms that. Maybe ipad-as-wacom-tablet usage makes sense, haven't tried that yet.
Really like the chill and useful vibes of the videos. I was wondering if there's any chance you can make a video on how to best blend using iPad and PC. While I'm aware the best case scenario would be using a mac, I don't or plan on getting mac. Since one of the things I love is gaming on my laptop, and mac, while it's slowly starting to get more games, most games will not work, or require windows emulator style software. Still I love my iPad, and would like to try and have as much functionality and syncing as I can. One of the things I miss is using iPad as a second screen with the laptop, but Duet is expensive and other apps appear to be lackluster, would there be a good alternative? (This was just an example) Whichever the case, continue the good work and looking forward to future videos.
That is a very niche target of audience bro, an iPad is just based of video consumption and handwriting. Use ur laptop on how it is and consider the fact windows and iOS/MAC are very different things lol
Thank you very much. I am a iPad Pro M2 exclusive user and completely resonate with your good and bad bits - I am a strong google docs and sheets user too, so appreciated you mentioned the specific frustrations that can be found with these. A question - how do you find the trackpad with click and drag? For example, resizing a window? I formerly found this quite difficult which I why I switched to a mouse. However, as you rightly suggest, there are many limitations to using a mouse on the iPad.
Yeah it's not great actually I put that down to me being not being accurate enough with it but if it's happening to you too then maybe it's the trackpad!
As always, great video!! I know you mentioned that there is no HDMI support, but what about HDMI to Thunderbolt cables? I’m redoing my desk setup and was thinking I could try that to extend my display without connecting the iPad to my MacBook. Hmmmmm I’ll try it and let you know. lol.
I love this video! That said, it's a year I replaced my personal laptop with an iPad but recently I decided to buy a mac mini for video editing mainly. Since then I can easily connect in my home network with my iPad Pro so I can editing my content from anywhere in my house. is it perfect? not at all, however I found myself more focused using iPad than a Mac while I'm working on a specific task
I’m using an M2 and really trying to break free from my windows LT for work. I have to produce a lot of spreadsheets so it would be really cool if we could support two external monitors. Maybe one day. Great videos by the way I used your short cut focus mode tutorial, works great 👍
I am semi-retired and only need a desktop setup for light MS 365 work and browser-based activities. Mostly I use my tablet (an iPad Pro Gen 4) for non-work video content consumption. I would like to consolidate to a single device (iPad or Android tablet) that could cover both activities well. I worry that the iPad will fall short as a desktop setup and that an Android tablet will fall short of my current iPad on the tablet side. Any advice/suggestions for what single device would fill the two niches I need to fill…. or should I just keep on with two device strategy (PC, iPad)?
i agree that the iPad is a companion device, and I use mine for different purposes. I've had a better experience using my MBP as an external display with sidecar and universal control (my primary computer is an M1 Studio Max).
I think people are struggling to define the iPads place because they want to see it as a replacement for a MBP when in reality it’s an extension of the iPhone. And when treated as such it becomes super easy to integrate it into center of your productivity
@@bigboma not iPads in general, just iPad Pros. iPads up to the Air model are clearly just tablets and should be treated as such, period. iPad Pros, on the other hand, cost as much as an "effing" great laptop, as in a MB Air (with some upgrades too). The 12.9" with pen and keyboard costs almost as much a MB Pro, here in Italy. That's what is making it extra hard for this product to have a place in the market, it just isn't as good as a MB and it's not versatile enough to replace it (nor to complement it imo). I'll be selling my iPad Pro next month and my MB Air and get a MB Pro. If I'll ever get the urge to write by hand I'll buy an iPad Mini, which is by far the most honest iPad currently.
@@jack_2612 Sorry if that wasnt clear, I was talking specifically about I pad pros. I think thats whats missing from this consumer equation is that folks are going the ipad route when they need a mac book and then are disappointed that their ipad pro, is an an ipad pro and not a mac book. What youre really asking for is a macbook with a touch screen. Which is fine, but thats not what an ipad is. The selling point of the ipad pro is that its modular. it has a certain levels of production that its capable of at different stages depending on what you have equipped to it. I use my ipad a stand alone note taking device, productivity manager, when i need more control i put it in my magic keyboard to increase my productivity, when I need even more functionality I dock it and connect it to my 4k display, keyboard, and mouse and do heavy video editing and if i need to switch back to lower levels of productivity, I undock it and I'm back to note taking, scheduling tasks or taking pictures. The reason why the ipad pro works for me and others is that I have use for all levels of the productivity and function that its capable of. And for those whos productivity/functionality requirements grow over time, you're an accessory away from having that and you get to do that in a user interface that youre already familiar with. If your need for a device lies only at the higher end of productivity and function, why would you even look in the direction of the ipad pro? A Macbook is always going to be a macbook, an ipad pro can be whatver you need it to be when the time calls for it. I will say that it would definitely be nice if ipad pro developers made apps that took more advantage of the ipad pros functionality, especially while in docked mode, but doesn't require an ipad to be running MacOS.
I wish my iPad would still be able to have sound when connected to an external display without having to connect to headphones or something else. If the Samsung Tab can do it why can't the iPad?
The beginning of your video is actually very amusing to me. Things like that one can use external cameras, move windows to any position of choice… stuff like that which has been normal in computerland Apple - Windows - Linux …for decades…. It just cacks me up that somehow people sort of KUDOS Apple for lifing those odd and unneccessary limitations….. and yes, …only if you buy their latest expensive stuff of course… Where have we ended up folks ?!?!?!
How do you alternate the use of the iPad and the MacStudio? You have to plug and unplug each time you want to use one or the other with the consequent wear and tear on the connectors.
I have the Instagram & Threads Apps installed, but I prefer the browser versions of them. Same for Facebook. I only use the apps for the sharing framework so I can share stuff directly to them without having to copy & paste to Safari.
It seems to me Apple is just doing software updates that keep the pretext of iPad being useful as a laptop alternative while deliberately not making it as usable as MacOS to avoid cannabalization of Macbook sales? Imho, iPadOS is fine as a tablet OS as you say, but for desktop-mode (as per DeX) just have a mode that switches to this as a kind of MacOS Mode and people can then use it like a laptop that way. It seems the software updates are more like marketing updates for selling the devices as opposed to really solving problems for users/owners of iPads? Sure as you say it's like seeing a dog standing on it's hind-legs: "You're impressed it can do it at all but it still does it badly!"
I agree- this is not a desktop replacement. You can specify the sound source (IPad vs Monitor- at least in 17.1). Otherwise, Stage Manager is not too intuitive, many apps aren’t quite right, mouse responsiveness is fair at best. Screen font sizes for different applications is all over the place. Overall I would grade this effort a C- and it makes me wonder how committed Apple is to the IPad platform- or at least to Stage Manager. It is workable as a desktop if you have no other alternatives and have a certain frustration tolerance. It can supplement as an extra desktop for certain tasks. For example, I have mine next to my Windows desktop and use it to view personal apps, journal, etc. Having an external monitor that allows me a bit more flexibility and using the keyboard can speed up typing.
I'd love to see a video comparing iOS for external monitor support with using the ShiftScreen app on iPad to get that support. Other RUclips videos are rating the external monitor support through that app very highly, but I've not seen any videos comparing the two approaches, with advantages / disadvantages, etc.
the ipad REALLY needs snap to for its windows on an external monitor. also the mouse tends to get jittery / lost going back and forth between exernal monitor and the ipad screen in a productivity environment.
I moved to IPad some years ago and like everybody else it seems, I am getting frustrated at the way Apple seems to be choking innovation. I got an M2 12.9. In the seemingly misguided hope that OS 17 would be a game changer. My wife is a dedicated MS Surface user and we have just bought her the new Surface 9. In researching the upgrade I can’t help but notice that MS is upping its game. The AI integration with innovation like Co Pilot, putting Python into Office apps on MS 360 etc. I have to be honest I am thinking of taking the hit financially on the M2 and swapping back to MS . Apple used to be the innovators, but now they are more run by bean counting finance types. Jobs must be spinning like dynamo on full capacity in his grave. Even apple corporate launch events that used to be glitzy feel more like a bunch of apologist trying to polish a turd. OK rant over . Good vid btw
Regular people dont use half of this apps on Ipad for work. Thats the issue with this videos really focus on youtubers job and video/photo work. But Great video..thanks for showing
i want to get rid of my gaming pc and try this. i'm only worried about the battery of the ipad. weren't you concerned about that? you only mentioned the heating part.
I just bought a MacBook Air. The latest update for the iPad broke my iPad only setup again(17.1.1). The external microphone support broke … again. I gave up.
Question: at 5:02 in the Video, your screen is automatically expanded to the external Display, rather than just mirrored. How can i turn that on permanently? Because every time i connect my Monitor, the screen is only mirrored and ich have to expand to the external Display every time in the settings manually
@@ByteReview Same. It shows you more info on the screen at once. The iPad App I think is only useful if you have Premium and need to download videos if you don’t have reliable mobile internet.
Here are my problems I have using my iPad as my computer. (I have iPad Air 5th Generation.) 1 - Microsoft apps behave oddly. Outlook, Office - I have problems with trying to format, paste, use my contact lists, and some other stuff. 2 - RUclips is wonky on external display. App looks and behaves as if it’s mobile. Videos show in 2 across, instead of 3 across. comments move to odd place, and entering comments using keyboard has been buggy. 3 - I have same problem using iPad as my cam in Zoom, Discord, and it behaves weird on Facebook app. When on external display, my orientation of my broadcast - is in opposite orientation to how I have my iPad. It shows in Portrait orientation because my camera is on the “top” of the iPad. Works fine for FaceTime and 1st party apps - but not most third party. A lot of this can be attributed to app developers. So app developers MUST test their app FULLY!!!! (I’m looking at you, Zoom, RUclips, Discord, etc…) However, I have an odd bug in display settings when I go to turn on external display. My iPad icon shows in the opposite orientation I actually have it in.
I forgot to mention the video streaming - which seems to have been fixed in most apps with iOS 17, thankfully. Apps would automatically play streaming video on external display, even though I started them on iPad and not display. Pluto, Hulu, Paramount, and more. Peacock seemingly flashed “Apple AirPlay” and then did the same. Most seemed to have stopped that now - VERY helpful, as I’d like to be able to have a video play full screen on my iPad like a mini tv, but then use external display as a computer. :)
So I got my thoughts down, and now made it to the end of the video - Here’s what I’m doing… I’m a pastor. And even though I live right next door to my church in a parsonage, the portability of my iPad is so key. Sure, the laptop is portable, but still kind of bulky, and I don’t need the full computing power. Sometimes I just want to hold in my hands. Enter iPad. But, having the external display - gives me the ability to practically fully use my iPad as a computer at home. (Main problem being how Microsoft apps behave on iPad - not as nice as I’d like.) I can use my iPad on my gooseneck mount for video conferences. I can have multiple windows open for doing my sermons. I have used it for my personal - and now with Discord finally allowing video while having other apps open - I don’t have to bring the computer home to do my D&D with friends anymore. I can do it all on my iPad. I’m not one that needs (currently?) full computing power and abilities. I can do a lot with the cloud and compatible apps. And then perfectly take my work - or my entertainment - on the road with me!
been using stage manager on my 2018 11 inch need it as good as the features are the experience has been hella buggy! full screen app going black screen, frame drops etc :((
My google meet app still doesn’t have this features (vídeo, audio and mic selection) you mentioned. Is it only available for pro iPads? I have de 10th gen.
If I remember correctly it was because there was no way to have multiple monitors. Since this isn’t necessary in this scenario, the Studio Display is ideal.
@@CaffeineByTwilight That doesn't make sense since you can use multiple monitors with the studio display. I think the problem had something to do with game consoles, as you can't get any sound from the studio display and it's limited to 60fps.
@@TE_-.-Found it. It was the multiple setup support. The studio display only had/has one usb-c input. ruclips.net/video/-aEn9ROTj_4/видео.htmlsi=RtDDv155pUOP1FV4
I explain a little in this video, but as this is my working setup and not one that requires a console / pc input it worked out in the office space - ruclips.net/video/mq8wnVv8_ag/видео.html
Damn, not that different from 2018 when I tried to go iPad Pro solo. This is still unusable alone. What was terribly frustrating for me was the lack of progression bars when moving files in the Files app. At the end I had a bunch of files that went missing because they got copied and pasted incomplete
I’m very disappointed that after all this time these little glitches couldn’t have been take care of and the desktop experience made perfect, COME ON! I remembered another stupid glitch that almost made me rip my hair off (but I remember I’m going bald so I didin’t 😂): when I downloaded files from the web, pdfs, documents mostly, normal stuff, if I choose a destination like the internal storage or iCloud, it downloaded fine, but if I chose Google Drive, which I was daily driving at that time, files wouldn’t download or get plain lost. Btw I had that problem too with Bluetooth keyboards, I was misspelling all the time with my Logitech slim folio pro or even with my Logitech MX Keys. Ever since 2018 I switched to OneDrive and windows laptops with a Microsoft 365 Family subscription and it works better but still this whole experience is halfassed at best. Have you had this last glitch too? Don’t get me wrong I have still faith in iPadOS and iPads in general and I want it to get better because it’s the only Mac I would consider buying again in the future but this desktop experience unacceptable for a “pro” device, hell even Samsung Dex is doing really good lately.
Why showing DaVinci Resolve when talking about how Lumafusion is convincing when taking the whole screen? Especially when Resolve refuses to go full screen on a monitor? Isn’t it a bit misleading?
blame my late night editing sessions! It's a close up and both apps look super similar at that distance - thanks for pointing it out though, I will triple check next time
Still has a far way to go be a equal desktop replacement to a Mac. For me, I have a 2017 12.9 iPad Pro and I use it for what is, a consumption device, which is mostly RUclips and web browsing. The only productive thing is if I need to digitally sign a document in Docusign. But for even basics like Email or any full productivity content creation tasks, that remains on on macOS and Windows. Apple I believe internally are conflicted about the iPads direction. These glaring bugs you demoed shows there is a combination of neglect. Apple should be pushing the device to extreme to make it a unique alternative, but its either a fear of cannibalism or they just don’t care.
Hi, I'm an iPad Air 5 (M1) user. I have been using this device for a year, and from the first day, I've wanted to connect it to a larger screen. Community, do you think using a trackpad is better than a mouse? I already have an MX Keys Mini and a Logitech G305 wireless mouse. Thanks!
Better? Depends on use case. I use both, I do find a mouse easier for click and drag and large movements (though I don’t reach for it if it’s only once). I have a large 3M mousepad that fits both. The trackpad can sit on my lap if I want to lean back, or be moved over for room for another item I need and still be as reachable (unlike a mouse where your arm would be stretching and moving making it difficult to control well or just be tiring). Trackpad is stationary and you can map it, I have the bottom left corner set up for my use and I love the two and three finger swipes and pinch and zoom type function. If you can only have one, likely the trackpad would be the choice.
It is sad that apps like logic and final cut aren't able to go full screen. I've tried both and Dex on my tab s8+ feels so much less limited than my wife's m2 iPad. Can you imagine how many more iPads apple could sell if they just let you run macos apps on a 'pro' mode on iPads? The chips are the same, it should be so simple to do. Yes the Mac apps will be less 'intuitive' than the iPad apps when you don't have a keyboard attached.. But it is a pro branded product... 'pros' are smart enough to be allowed to figure out how to use their device the way they want. It would also make for a good reason to upsell to the pro iPads
9:02 - UPDATE - As of iPadOS 17.1 you can now control sound output goes, woo!

You do however need to use it on a desk as iPad with the Smart keyboard doesn’t work in a LAP-top scenario. If a Student reads this comment and your workflow is not technical just go ahead and buy an iPad as a laptop replacement you wont regret it.
Love the videos. Cheers.🥳
Awesome to read this, glad yours is working well
As a fellow student can I also give a shout out to Freeform plus Apple pencil with the iPad as a superb note taking combo.
Does DeX have proper webcam support?
Thanks! And I don't think Apple will ever put MacOS on the iPad 😩
@@TomWakeford it's app dependent, not system wide.
Wow, most reviewers don't talk about the negative/annoying points you mentioned, thanks for highlighting them for us consumers to be aware!
Thanks, gotta be honest!
Glad you agree!
really sure about that ?
Weird as a got none of the bugs you seem to encounter! My second monitor is mainly for having cours or references as I draw and learn art with my iPad! Been loving my setup!
I’ve just started using my iPad with an external display and I share many of the frustrations you’ve experienced. My overall feeling is that it’s not quite ready for a user like me. On the plus side, many of these quirks can be fixed with software updates. Just a shame though that we’ll likely not see fixes for many of these issues until at least the next iteration of iPadOS in 2024.
Let's hope they come sooner!
EXCELLENT VIDEO

What is the Keyboard that you are using with this iPad...
Nice! have you tried pairing it with your mac and using Universal Control? I used that a lot in my home office and loved it!
I have been using a very similar setup and find it works really well, with a few niggles
The niggles with Stage Manager are mainly that it is a different UI
My iPad is usually my device I will grab if I can only bring one too (quick trip out, coffee shop, etc.)
IF iPad was able to remote into other Mac’s (like ARD) without needing me to remote into a Mac mini with Team Viewer, then use ARD from there, I would go all iPad again.
Thanks a lot for sharing 🙏and helping all ❤🙏
Perfect! Love to read this
Your videos are absolutely most aesthetic i have ever watched. And i wach a ton of videos daily
Thank you so much !
Yeah whats with not going full screen. You cannot game on it full screen???
i totally agree with the “annoying things”
also there need to be alot more keyboard shortcuts
ex: there is need to a hotkey to move the an app from display to ipad or vice versa
Thank you for this specific analysis. I have had the same experience. A lot of small functions are still missing, with lots of limitations.
You're welcome, and yes, still plenty of work for apple to do!
Really love the color grading in your videos. Do you have a tutorial or any tips? Also a “color grading on iPad” video would be great if you haven’t done one already.
I absolutely hated stage manager... but seeing that windows aren't locked to quadrants is huge!
also, love the new setup! Shame I sold my iPad Pro 🤣
yeah it's a big upgrade! And thanks! haha, I don't blame you in a way, it's very easy to fall off the wagon of using it
Also... Can you not select the audio output by long pressing the AirPlay logo above 'now playing' in control centre'???
@@ByteReview
Yea you can , for bluetooth, not the ipad speakers tho @@ChrisWilmshurst @ @ByteReview
I LOVE THIS TEST! lol I would LOVE if the ipad could really replace the laptop. it's just so cumbersome when ur traveling with a full size laptop + camera gear and a million other things.
I love your subject in the ipad desk setup, you can do again but with ipad pro M4 ???
As mentioned, DEX is better in every way. Apple could make the experience better but won't because they want you to buy a computer and an iPad.
I tried out dex a while ago and it was great!
9:40 my workaround for this is just delete the apps you want to use on the web. RUclips for example is uninstalled from my iPad, I only use the web version.
Yeah I get that but then I want the apps when I’m using it as an ipad again! Haha
Very soon, iPads will become more and more capable and flexible to use 😉
Looking forward to your next video in a few months time sharing new experiences after the next iOS update.
thanks for the kind words and for sharing about your experience - and yes you're right about side loading, looking forward to seeing what comes out
What video were you editing? Looks cool!
Cool video dude! I think iPads have their place on a desk but as secondary devices
(This was just an example)
Whichever the case, continue the good work and looking forward to future videos.
That is a very niche target of audience bro, an iPad is just based of video consumption and handwriting. Use ur laptop on how it is and consider the fact windows and iOS/MAC are very different things lol
get a extension usb c cord and u can lay it flat next to u for a note taking Scenario
My question would be: how does it compare to basic Mac mini desktop experience?
Mac Mini would be better in nearly every way if you need desktop level apps
I’m using an M2 and really trying to break free from my windows LT for work. I have to produce a lot of spreadsheets so it would be really cool if we could support two external monitors. Maybe one day.
Great videos by the way I used your short cut focus mode tutorial, works great 👍
You can use the a12z ipad pro w stage manager now
great video bro......keep cooking💯
I am semi-retired and only need a desktop setup for light MS 365 work and browser-based activities. Mostly I use my tablet (an iPad Pro Gen 4) for non-work video content consumption. I would like to consolidate to a single device (iPad or Android tablet) that could cover both activities well. I worry that the iPad will fall short as a desktop setup and that an Android tablet will fall short of my current iPad on the tablet side. Any advice/suggestions for what single device would fill the two niches I need to fill…. or should I just keep on with two device strategy (PC, iPad)?
you can do everything with the iPad, just keep searching.
Is there going to be a update to this video 2024 style?
The iPad getting warmer with a big screen attached? It's the GPU having to do double duty, I'd say. And maybe a bit more work for the CPU.
i agree that the iPad is a companion device, and I use mine for different purposes.
It’s fixed in 17.1
@@chcersej Just download the 17.1 beta and it does work! I really wanted that, I’m really happy. Thank you!
@@ariesfunk You’re welcome. That feature has been long time om its way! Cheers.
Plug and unplug 😐
The base M2 Mac mini is so affordable that using the iPad to drive a desk setup doesn’t make sense unless you really prefer to use a single device.
M2 Mac mini is a beast as well at that price point!
Love the font your using for your title what font is it?
I can confirm Logic Pro for iPad now goes full screen on external display
Oh that's sick!
the ipad REALLY needs snap to for its windows on an external monitor. also the mouse tends to get jittery / lost going back and forth between exernal monitor and the ipad screen in a productivity environment.
Hi Tom love your vids!!!!
Is the external camera support available for ms teams?
thanks for sharing.
i dream the future tech for art, design & content creation is iPad.
Regular people dont use half of this apps on Ipad for work. Thats the issue with this videos really focus on youtubers job and video/photo work. But Great video..thanks for showing
Yeah, I get that - just tested it from my perspective!
i want to get rid of my gaming pc and try this. i'm only worried about the battery of the ipad. weren't you concerned about that? you only mentioned the heating part.
I just bought a MacBook Air. The latest update for the iPad broke my iPad only setup again(17.1.1). The external microphone support broke … again. I gave up.
Bro i have no pc or computable device
All I have ipad monitor keyboard and mouse+adopter
So I have questions it will work without cpu or pc
the heating issue is most likely caused by charging
Question: at 5:02 in the Video, your screen is automatically expanded to the external Display, rather than just mirrored. How can i turn that on permanently? Because every time i connect my Monitor, the screen is only mirrored and ich have to expand to the external Display every time in the settings manually
You need to make sure you have a keyboard and mouse attached to the iPad already, then it will (should) defualt to stage manager style over mirroring
Can you use an iMacs display in this way?
Do you prefer the YoueTube iPad App, or the RUclips website via Safari?
Safari for sure
@@ByteReview Same. It shows you more info on the screen at once. The iPad App I think is only useful if you have Premium and need to download videos if you don’t have reliable mobile internet.
Here are my problems I have using my iPad as my computer. (I have iPad Air 5th Generation.)
1 - Microsoft apps behave oddly.
(I’m looking at you, Zoom, RUclips, Discord, etc…)
However, I have an odd bug in display settings when I go to turn on external display.
So I got my thoughts down, and now made it to the end of the video - Here’s what I’m doing…
I’m a pastor.
I think this is the best way to think about it!
is that yellow keyboard, hanzo?
What monitor is that
What’s the webcam on top of your studio display?
been using stage manager on my 2018 11 inch need it as good as the features are the experience has been hella buggy! full screen app going black screen, frame drops etc :((

I'm accessing through the browser! Try that and they should be there
thumbs up just for this experiment!
I have a question. You think the studio display isn't for you, but now you use it. What brought you back again?

I have a Windows 11 desktop but I have an iPad 9th generation is it possible I hook up my iPad to my windows computer
Hello.. Can you do like, Procreate on iPad then RUclips on an external monitor? Thank you..
Yep
what i dont understand is, is it easier to carry external keyboard, touchpad and a camera and a charger, than carrying a macbook ?
Not at all, but it's a different device altogether. If you're looking for MacBook computing mainly, then grab a macbook for sure!
Sound output is addressed in 17.1
Damn, not that different from 2018 when I tried to go iPad Pro solo. This is still unusable alone. What was terribly frustrating for me was the lack of progression bars when moving files in the Files app. At the end I had a bunch of files that went missing because they got copied and pasted incomplete
It does show the copying time now which is cool, but yes the files app is very meh
How can I get multiple screen monitors?
At this point they just need to run full MacOS on iPads
Apple should be pushing the device to extreme to make it a unique alternative, but its either a fear of cannibalism or they just don’t care.
i love my ipad but i still don't get somethings
1. there is still no clip board
2. they automatically delete what i copied after 20min or so
Same I got iPad 9 gen and I got the same issue otherwise , iPad is my main source of information/ entertainment.
the ipad should be able to work as wacom tablet for editing video and photo apps...
@@RedErin thanks, I'll still using a mouse, do you know how connect wireless headphones and use a external mic in iPad?
how about the thermal when you gaming or editing on it? does it throttling? or just a normal heat?

It doesnt have anything comon with watercolors, but looks cool
