Years ago I bought two tools that changed the way I build in my little shop. The Kreg jig and a biscuit joiner. Almost makes me feel like I know what I’m doing. Good video as usual.
I like your new pocket hole jig Ken. That's nice that it can help you make the chicken run door. I like how you always check for square. I like your door with the crossbucks. The chicks sound happy in the background. I like the chicken wire on it but the hardcloth will be better. Wow, 12 inches of snow! Thanks for this video Ken!
@@kenskarpentry Ken, just thinking forward a little bit now but maybe you should consider a semi-retirement business fitting stairs and mezzanine storage to customers EXISTING garages, as you are very proficient at those and it would still give you an additional income. (You still have the truck and most of your tools, so there would be no new setting up costs and you could keep a tight control on your work load…) - just thinking out loud buddy…
I got a chuckle out of seeing the chick jump up on the heat lamp at 21:03 and Kia checking it out. “Chick on a hot tin roof”. 😆 Nice job with the build! 😊
@@kenskarpentry I have several Kreg Jigs...actually I think I have most of them. I was a journeyman carpenter for quite a while and have now remodeled my "69" trailer. I am retired but find myself bored with just looking at the walls, so I am always trying to find or think of something to do.
WOW, that's a lot of snow ... It's one-kaya high. She was super happy hopping around in it. Fun to watch. The ChicKEN run is looking sweet with the new door being ready to go. I've added the pocket hole jig to my wish list. Seems perfect for so many different builds. Thanks for being you. Love the channel and the content. Much appreciated.
Ken you have a very observant chick behind you! You cannot beat any of the Kreg products. I built a bookshelf twenty years ago and used the basic kit. The system makes an incredible strong joint. I made a test connection to see if it would do what i wanted. I would show everyone the test piece and ask if they could break the connection. Those two pieces of joined 1 x 2 still survive today!
I still have the cheapest Kreg jig. I bought it 20 years ago. You use vice grips to hold the jig in place. It's not as fancy as the others but it still works great.
16:46 At this point in the video your puppy dog looks over the new door up and down for several seconds. Nothing like a quality control inspector on the job.
@ 11:14 the odd distance between the Kreg holes tells me that only two are meant to be used on any one board / I think they are placed to optimize for each size of lumber / when all else fails, we can always read the directions LOL
If you have some small dimension strips of wood you can always tack over the chicken/poultry wire with strips of wood to hold in place and end the aggravation of hammering in the staples
Kreg makes a large vice grip like tool with large round circular plates that will squeeze the two parts together at the joint for a flush fit before adding the screws.
Ken, don't worry about wear on the drill guides, I have the original Kreg Jig and have used around 10K screws and the guides don't show any noticeable wear. Yes I too love the pocket hole jig. Most notable build was a wall hung corner 5 shelf unit (36 high x 12 wide on both walls) with only pocket screws.
Hi Ken, I have the older version of that Kreg jig. The new one definitely looks improved. You’re going to love it! I can see some cabinet building in your future. Thanks for the videos.
Great build Ken! Pocket Hole jigs really make fast work of it! Enjoying your type of builds that you are doing now, but am missing the garage builds and the crew :(( Still praying for Dan and his family. God Bless!!
That's a cool tool. Suggestion... mount it to a piece of plywood so when you need to use it just clamp the wood to something. (sawhorse, bench, etc) For a quickie job you can place it on the floor and step on the edge of the wood.
I have using my pocket hole jigs foe over 25 yrs. They are quite the time saver. I am sure you will get a lot of good use out of your purchase. Keep up with the great videos. s
Ken, always watch the channel. I appreciate your knowledge and how you conserve materials in the designs. Concedning the Kreg jig. Used itnfor years with great success. I would sugvest going to the blue (ourdoor) screws for the PT materials. I think the current chemicals make.make your zinc plated screws dissappeear after a few seasons... Praying for Timmy and Dan's family.
The "whirlwind" aka Kaiya🐕 is just buzzing everywhere🤣 Too bad you can't harness all that energy⚡⚡ I do believe all that snow will be melted by August❄☃🌨 Sending you some 🌞🌞🌞🌞from all the way south, down here in central Pennsylvania😂 Have a nice day Ken & family 📐🔨✏🪚✌🏻👣
Looking good Ken. In the winter after it snows you will want to shake the metal chicken mesh on top of your run to let the snow fall through and take the weight off the mesh. If you don't and let snow build up on top, it can get too heavy and damage to mesh and/or the wooden frame. Don't ask how I know, I'm embarrassed to say I had to replace my center wood brace on our run last year. We live a little south of you. We were on the rain/snow line which kept switching back and forth from snow to rain and sleet complete with lightening. We ended up with 2" of solid ice topped with 2" of ice pellets. It was the first time I would have described it as "pouring snow" during the storm. My snow blower was no match for it. It was even too much for a standard wide snow shovel. I had to shovel what I could before it froze that night with a small 9" square shovel so each scoop wasn't so heavy. I've been using my low end Kreg pocket hole driller for about four years now. It still works well and the guides are showing little to no signs of wear. If you need to use a fixture like that often check out the high end tool that Al Lumnah got for the task. It's a whole table top tool like a table saw but it is a drill that you just get the wood in place and pull the arm down to drill. He even has had Gina using it a few times. FYI - Your WD-40 will help things like your pipe clamp for a while. However it doesn't last as a lubricant for long. It was made to be a "water displacement" product so It evaporates away completely and will need to be reapplied as needed. It you use something like PB Blaster that has other lubricants added the pipe clamps will move smoother for a longer period.
Nice looking door Ken. I used that same wire on my blueberry cage about the size of your chicken run but had more roof cross bracing. Don't have any snow problem.
Kreg tool is great. Love mine. Yours is fancier than mine. I've only got the small hand held version. You can also get exterior blue screws for that too. Used them for my raised beds.
Ken, we’re missing the drone shots and garage builds. Maybe contact the company that have taken over at building the garages that you are not building now and maybe fix some of those?
Coop is looking good. Don't forget when you put the door latch on that you need to make it so you can undo it from the inside. Nothing worse than getting locked in. 🤣 Do you have to have dogs on a leash if you have fences?
What you call "square head" screws are, in Canada where they were invented, called Roberson screws. Far superior to flat head or phillips "+ head", and are used in almost all wood, decking and exterior screws.
Hi Ken I’m looking to invest in clamps. Maybe someday could you explain different clams you have and if starting out. Which ones are best and where to start? Thanks Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤

@kenskarpentry But my main question is did you pay more than the 999.00 they are telling me I have to pay more Ken . For the front basket so now I'm question them ..

Yes, I thought that was really cute as well too. It was at 9:45 when the chick flew up on the heat lamp.
HAHA thanks
Happy belated Birthday Ken!!!! Nice present your wife got you. Thanks for sharing the chicken run build.
Thanks and you’re welcome
Good morning Mr Ken. Always love getting a new tool. Have ur self a awesome day sir ✌️
Thanks, you too!
I loved watching you figure out and use that jig. Give Kaia a scratch behind the ears for me.
Haha will do

Good morning Ken! Happy to see you staying busy!
Good morning. Thanks
Beautiful Door Ken👍Can use it anywhere 👍🤩🙏🙌🌟👌🤞✌️🎈🌅🌞🎂🇺🇸 Thank You For Sharing all your Gifts& Talents 🎉
Thanks 👍
Gooooooooood afternoon, Ken. Coop is looking good. I like how you match the gate to the coop. It's the little details that make it special.
Thanks 👍. Glad you noticed

That would be cool
The two tools that really sped up my work time are a Kreg pocket screw jig and a finish nailer.
Yes very true
I’ve had my Kreig jig for 15 years and it’s still working great, might want to get a set of quick clamps makes it a much faster setup
Cool. Good to know

Hi Ken. A very nice piece of equipment the door looks great .
Thanks 👍
Ken make sure your mesh goes well below ground to stop the rats burrowing in at night and stealing the chicken - feed or eggs.
Thanks

I use a little bit of oil on my drill bit when I use mine, and use a Face Clamp for pocket hole joinery.

Nice thanks
You could always call Al Lumina because he has one of those
Right. His is much more than mine
Very nice gift, Ken. Pretty handy
Thanks

Your next project should be a woodworking bench. A Roubo will do. :)
Interesting thanks
Nice looking door. I was wondering about the cost of the "special" Kregg Screws
I have heard that they’re expensive. These screws came with the jig.
Sell the fixture cheap. Make the profit on the Special screws you need to use it@@kenskarpentry
