- A very special encounter with an exceptional talent on the violin. Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra meets Spanish violinist María Dueñas during rehearsals for a joint tour with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. You can hear excerpts from works by Jean Sibelius, Manuel de Falla and Édouard Lalo. The interview discusses María Dueña’s childhood, her amazing career, winning the Menuhin Competition, her violins made by famous builders, and her work as a composer and filmmaker.
With her impressive musical expressiveness and technical perfection, Dueñas has quickly established herself as one of the most sought-after artists of her generation. At the latest since winning the 2021 Menuhin Competition, she has been in demand worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician.
Born in Granada (Spain), Dueñas began her musical education at the age of five and initially studied at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden before moving to Boris Kuschnir’s class at the Music and Art Private University of the City of Vienna as well as at the University of Art in Graz in 2016. Since then she has also lived with her family in Vienna.
Dueñas plays on instruments by Nicolò Gagliano from 17?4 (year not exactly known) and Guarneri del Gesù “Muntz” from 1736. As the winner of the Menuhin Competition 2021, she’s also enjoying a two-year-loan of a Stradivarius violin. In the video she plays Nicolò Gagliano’s violin.

Maria is a force on fire. She is so young but her music grabs you by the heart and cannot be ignored. Such passion, reminds me of Du Pre.
Thank you for this very nicely-edited video!! Maria speaks four languages fluently (Spanish, German, French, and English) and is now studying Russian. (When she began studying, Maria's mother also began to study the violin - perhaps to encourage her - but found it very difficult while Maria found it very easy. The mom gave up but Maria kept on studying.) She forgot to mention that one of her benefactors was Russian violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov - Spivakov made it possible for Maria to travel to Vienna and begin studying there. She did not mention that she also played the famous Muntz (1736) Guarneri for a while. I didn't know she was now trying out a Strad. The Gagliano fiddle she is playing in this video is in superb condition. Please note that both of the middle bouts are protected by some (rubber?) gadgets and that is a good thing considering Maria is a very aggressive player. 🙂 Maria has won first prize in no fewer than 8 competitions - she also sometimes writes her own cadenzas to concertos in her repertoire. I know Alondra personally so I won't say anything about her.

Yes, she has superb technique and musicality .....but the adage, which I thought rather esoteric at the time, from my teacher was when it's not so much with how one holds the bow, but how the bow holds you! or to put it another way, becoming one with the bow
virtuosos have this of course....but rarely at such a young age!

He estado siguiendo a esta chica, María Dueñas, por unos dos años aproximadamente, y me parece que tiene un talento enorme. Hay poca gente que tiene la suerte de toparse con eso para lo que han nacido, y sinceramente creo que María ha nacido para tocar el violín.

Beeindruckende Geigerin, wundervoll musiziert. Aber lasst doch endlich mal die Maske weg, ich kann es so allmählich nicht mehr sehen.
Es würde sich anbieten, die Augen zuzumachen. Dann müssen Sie das nicht sehen und Maria Dueñas war vorsichtig, da sie von Konzert zu Konzert reist und mit sehr vielen Menschen in engeren Kontakt kommt.
Es wird wahrscheinlich allen Beteiligten sehr Leid tun, dass Sie das nicht mitansehen können. Sie müssen Qualen gelitten haben.. ich rufe sonst den Notarzt oder gleich besser den Psychologen!
macht doch den Stoff vor dem Gesicht weg :( Das stört schon beim zusehen extrem, wie muss es dann für die Menschen sein so zu musizieren... wenigstens Dirigent und Solist...
Ich vergesse dass ich meine Maske angesetzt habe keine ganze 5 Minuten nachdem ich das habe und das bei alltäglichen Aktivitäten. Beim Musizieren existiert der Rest der Welt einfach nicht, nur dein Instrument und die Musik existiert für dich, also wird es da noch inkonsequenter sein
