At the time this appeared in cinemas, the fact that Harrison Ford was the bad guy was even more unthinkable. He had always been the hero and/or the good guy until then. This really had audiences completly caught off guard. A brilliant casting choice. This movie is one of my gems in my collection.

Ford has played a bad guy before, but people tend to forget his small role in "The Conversation" with Gene Hackman.

    • @chrisn4315

@@YolandaAnneBrown95726 I'm sure a lot of people tend to forget that. I'm positive even that I'm not alone when saying I never saw that movie. Plus, it was before his breakthrough as Han Solo in Star Wars.
Until 2000, when What lies beneath appeared in cinemas, Ford has been 3x Han Solo, 3x Indiana Jones and had appeared as Jack Ryan, too. I think, two times. All iconic movie heores. Ford played other movies, too - but even in single thriller or romantic flics, he was the good guy. In fact, he had a major role (each time as the good guy) in impressive 6 of the top 10 movies of all time (by 2000).
What I mean to say by this is, at that time Ford was without question consireded as Mr. Good Guy.

For sure. The thing about that is now when they do it in a movie some people will go right for that idea. Much of the time it happens, but not all the time. Of course that leads to internet people acting like they're brilliant detectives when the watch the trailer or read the cast list and GUESS who in a Mystery is the big bad! 😁

Trivia, Robert Zemeckis made this film in between filming of 'Cast Away'. He shot all of Tom Hanks' earlier scenes when he's healthy looking first, but Tom needed a year to lose the weight and grow his beard long for the last half of the film. The studio wouldn't allow Zemeckis to keep his crew together for an entire year without shooting anything and so he made this film primarily to keep his production crew together while Tom Hanks got ready for the last half of 'Cast Away'. 👍

I think this is the only movie that Harrison has done where he was the enemy, he's been very typecast as the hero or the rogueish scoundrel but never an outright villian. The shock of discovering that in the movie had heads turning when this came out. Half the ladies in my family have a huge crush on him so I've seen this so many times and it still holds up.

Fun little references to Psycho in this, though - his name's Norman, and he pushed the car into the lake. Interesting thing about “What Lies Beneath”, is Zemeckis was directing Tom Hanks in Castaway; when they got to the four years later transition, Zemeckis kept the same crew to shoot “What Lies Beneath”, to give Tom Hanks the time to loose weight,

Hallelujah! That was brilliant! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I knew you would love this and this reaction was even better than I had hoped. I'm so grateful you picked this one. I've seen this movie a number of times, and watching your reaction summary just reminds me of how great a movie this really is. There are times when being manipulated is a bad thing, obviously, but there's not much I love more than being manipulated by a talented filmmaker. You, Kat, are providing your audience with a very special treat by allowing us to watch and appreciate seeing you react and respond to this skillful manipulation. It's so much fun. Zemeckis must have had a blast making this film. So many cliches played to the hilt. And when it's done with a wink and a nod, it's not cheesy... it's fantastic! Sam Raimi, Brian De Palma, Quentin Tarantino, and others, along with Zemeckis, are directors who are great at making use of well established cinematic gags, tricks, and other tools to push the audience's buttons. The only bummer is that you're not getting to see these films in a theater with an audience. It's so much fun to hoot and holler with a bunch of strangers in the dark. Your arm flailing and screams would be most welcome. 😃
I do hope you'll give serious consideration to De Palma's "Body Double." Obviously you appreciate the appeal of a "thriller" after your comments following your reaction to "What Lies Beneath." If you do react to "Body Double," be forewarned that you'll be raising your eyebrows a *ton* and you'll have to edit and pixelate your upload a fair amount. But you'll be screaming "what is happening?!?!?!?" with as much glee as you have for some of these other rides you've been on. "Why are you doing that?!?!?!" "Don't do THAT!!!!" "WHY is he doing that?!?!?!?" De Palma in full manipulation mode for that one. I can't wait... 😈

Obviously this movie is great the first time around, and the twists contribute to the fun. However, this movie is so great on subsequent viewings specifically because you can now perceive each "ghostly" incident as Madison doing what she can to help Claire solve the mystery. Each time the picture frame is knocked over, or the door opens, or the key falls... all nudges to help encourage Claire to keep pursuing the truth. Absolutely brilliant storytelling. Still great and rewarding even on the fifth or sixth viewing. I also love how almost the entire first half of the movie is a red herring meant to make us think Claire might be crazy so that suspicion doesn't immediately land on Norman. Principles of misdirection employed beautifully to keep the audience off balance. Makes the reveal of Norman as the villain so much more shocking. Bravo!

LOVE THIS MOVIE! Saw it in the theater when it was released.... Scared the crap out of then and Still hold ups now.... great use of building tension and suspense as well (that door) ... Who would have every thought to have Harrison Ford as the villain! Excellent Casting choice (and it works superbly)! What a twist!! You gotta love Michelle Pfeiffer. Superb film and still one of my absolute faves. Keep it UP! Cheers!!!

I don't think she really hated horror movies. It's just a trope for the channel. She's too brave when things get scary not to be a true horror fan, even if she hadn't seen many movies.

If you look closely at the final few frames of the film, Madison’s face appears in the snow of the graveyard. Pretty slick filming processes.

This is one of my favorite movies. Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford were great in it, and I think the reason it's stuck with me so long is because it's the only movie I've seen Ford play a villain, and it's such a big twist.
My dad took us to see it at the drive-in when it came out. The projector broke during the final fight, right when Norman's eye opens and he stands up to go after Claire. The drive-in let people come back the next night to finish it, but we were on vacation and were leaving the next day. My dad bought it on VHS a few months later, and we were able to watch it all.

Don't know if I would call this a horror, more a thriller and/or mystery...saw-as is so often-on original cinema release (it has a special place in my memory as the very last film I saw at my main childhood cinema before it closed.Bizarrely, when my nearest cinema closed in July, the last film I saw there was also a Harrison Ford film:the new Indiana Jones film)🎩

It's fun that the movie fools us into thinking it's going down a certain street but then you discover that this route was a ruse, and we're taken somewhere else. Good stuff, this film--- so deliciously Hitchcockian, and oozing suspense.

OMG I love this movie and I'm glad someone finally reacted to it! You were great, Kat! Harrison Ford being the bad guy was so shocking back then. On a rewatch you'll notice Ford's subtle acting and how his character was always a bad guy.
Well, Christmas is coming, and I see you haven't seen Black Christmas (1974) yet. This is a core horror film every afficionado needs to see at least once. Some say there'd be no Halloween (1978) without Black Christmas. An alternative choice, how 'bout a horror movie that's not a horror movie? One of my favorite movies is the original Wicker Man (1973). It's always billed as a horror movie, but I consider it to be more of a musical. If you watch it you'll see what I mean. It features horror heavy hitters Chris Lee and Ingrid Pitt, and it has a healthy cult following. It's worth a watch whether for the channel or your own viewing pleasure. Whatever is next I'll be looking forward to it.

If you don't mind another thriller after this one, try 'One Hour Photo' with Robin Williams. Not as much horror, but one of the most chilling performances from any actor, let alone one not known for that kind of role.

The possession scene scared the hell outta me as a kid. It’s still creepy but very cool b/c it’s such a subtle blink and you’ll miss it moment. Also….the bathtub scene….iconic.

I remember watching that movie and man those jump scares all got me! Even when I saw them coming! LOL. I think that she put on the necklace because she was waiting to see if Madison was going to show her something contrary to what her husband said. That's what I was guessing at least since she took Madison's hair before. I loved that slow turn of Madison's head so she was staring at that guy too! It scared me but it was epic too! It was a great movie!

FINALLY! Someone is reacting to this great movie. My wife and I saw this in the theater. It really captures the Hitchcock vibe. It's not really emphasized but way to go noticing Michelle Pfeifer's eye color change. Also, did you see the face in the snow in the very last shot in the cemetery?
