Dave , you almost made me shed a tear tonight . Man you & Paul brought back so many memories to me of the 1970's & 80's I wanted to run out the door & run across I-20 , 10 , 80 , & 90 again. Those days were hard but they were also a lot of fun , like running across Texas , Az , NM Etc . wide open with , 3 or 4 of your trucking buddies. I'm 76 now & man I would love to drive one more time but can't pass the medical anymore. Love your videos Dave & I believe we would make good friends , we seem to have the same views.......Ken .. called me KP back in the day .
Hey Ken, glad you enjoyed the interview! Talking with Paul was so easy, I felt like I'd known him all my life. I know what you mean when you talk about running wide open across the bottom with a few friends, I really miss that. Probably get pulled over for that stuff now. I'm not sure we're missing as much as we think, from talking to friends of mine that still do it. They tell me the good truck stops are all just fast food outlets now, the traffic is way worse and pretty much all the old school guys and the fancy trucks are gone. So I just content myself with my memories, which is part of why I enjoyed talking to Paul so much, it brought back good memories. I'm not very good with e-mail and such, just a one fingered typist, but drop me a line if you think of it, once in a while, be happy to hear from you. Take care. Dave
@@dave-smarttrucking7515 Dave thank you for your come back , it really means a lot to me . I know what you mean about the 1 finger typing on this thing , I don't know what I would do on one of those ELD things. Those old truck stops like the " Trippel T , Border Cowboy , I-8o Sinclair , Troutdale , Jublitz , Etc. Hey , I used to say if a trucker didn't make it to heaven they were sent to " Hunts Point " , Lol. By the way that's a fine Pete you have brother , I always thought the 379 was & still is the best looking Hood. Again I say , Thanks for the come back & may the Lord ride with you & wife.
Thank you both for sharing your memories. It brought to mind some of the stories my Dad would tell, though he started in the 50's when conditions on the road were real rough and trucks were pretty simple. He talked of companies having drivers in uniform and policies that stated you'd be fired for passing someone stranded on the road. True knights of the open road back then.
He just passed in January at 91 years and is greatly missed.
I feel your pain, both my parents of course are gone now, but I miss them and think about them every day.
Hey there Driver. So glad you took the time to drop by to check out today's video. Love to hear your thoughts on the interview! 😎
I had a friend pass away in his truck about a month ago. Listening to “He was a good Hand” helped get me thru the shock of losing a good friend. There’s a verse in that song that always hits me. It wasn’t for the money. It was for the ride. To hear Twin Turbos howling. Across the dark Santa Rosa sky. Thank you Paul for such soulful music.
Paul makes great music doesn't he ? I love those lines from that song as well!
This interview was a real pleasure
thank you both!
Glad you enjoyed it, Paul was a real pleasure to talk to, an old school gentleman!
LHP music is absolutely amazing .
"40 wt. Coffee" and "You Were A Good Hand " are BOTH HAND'S DOWN BEST TRUCKING SONGS EVER WRITTEN ....
Hell yes brother about time long haul paul getin recognized
30 wieght coffee was my life
I was surprised at just how articulate Paul was. Very well spoken and seems to be well read.
Yes, that certainly came across, didn't it!
I just listened to the "Cracker King" song....WOW!!! I worked with a guy who wound up just like the "Cracker King". A lot of drivers lived and died that way "back in the day". Ya'll take care
Yes they did, knew a few myself.
Excellent video Dave and Paul most excellent. Paul, thank you for sharing your story. I’ve been following you for a minute. Y’all have a great weekend. God bless.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks Raymond, enjoy the weekend!
I know Long Haul Paul. Own a few of his cds. Great songwriter and a good friend. Thanks for doing the interview with him
Thanks Long Haul Paul for the most interesting story of your trucking and music careeer. I have a few miles "around the block" also as I hauled freight for 42 years and then moving to Chattanooga, and delivered new gasoline tankers, garbage trucks,semi-tractors coast to coast, and my last run was in 2019 at age 82.My trucking partner was a GREYHOUND driver for 33 years and he made his last run at 90 years old.And he was a safe driver. So we had 130 years and well over 10,000,000 miles and wishing all you drivers safe miles,10-04.Thanks Dave for sharing about Long Haul Paul.Have made many trips through Muscle Shoals on the way out west.
I appreciate both of you guys and all that you bring to the trucking world.
Dave, Great interview with Paul, We’re all about the same age, I’m glad to hear about Paul and I found his RUclips channel, Thanks again from central Fl.
Thank you for watching and if I ever get down to Florida again I might hit you up for an airboat ride, always wanted to try that!
@@dave-smarttrucking7515 ready when you are Dave!
Fred eagle smith is kick ass
Thank you Catherine and Dave . That was probably the most enjoyable interview I"ve ever done.
Paul is awesome! His music is good - another long haul trucker turned musician is Bill Weaver!
I'll have to check Weaver out, thanks!
Paul seems like an awesome guy. Really enjoy his music. You need to get him back on in the future.
Yes, we will do that!
I love his music. The song Nanner Puddin is a true story of the 49er truckstop on i75 exit 49 the lady behind the counter a supped up base station named 38 special. I was a tobacco hauler and ran dedicated auto parts for honda. Greenstein makes me homesick for when i was a youngen running tobacco for Oliver we were one of 12 "tobacco haulers" my truck was 333 and made me a legend in my own mind.
Im 50 now twice divorced grew up the son of an Owner Operator.
I read every Overdrive mag i could get my hands on. Im a trainer now and the trainees i seem to get are different.
I started driving 23 years old. I came off when my daughter was born at 25. I was miserable get stuck in a building doing same thing every day.
Long trucking is not for people with young children at home. You did right for your daughter. There are good local paying jobs out there also.
Yeah, I don't think I could have done that. On the good side though, at least you were home every night with your family
Great content as a young driver I salute you guys
Thanks Eric!
The truly old school drivers are a joy to talk to and a fount of information. But God save me from the know it all that's my age and had been driving for 20 years.
Hey if any of you guys like old trucking songs one of my all time favorites was " Pinball Machine " by Lonnie Irving.
I'll check it out, appreciate it!
Good interview. Thanks.
Thank you!
Thank You Sir for a real an genuine interview. Priceless. Thank You Long Haul Paul.songs about truck driving are about a life most can't handle.and the rest of us can't give it up.keepem coming.
Really enjoyed this video dave, thank you dave, and paul.
Thank you sir!
I just realized how much we needed this
That’s cool about the bald eagle! That was my grandpas handle and he as well owned a small trucking business that we still operate today, but we are out of Kansas not MN
Amen brothers! Happy Easter.
Thank you both for sharing
Great interview!
Thank you!
Yhea the low quality now is ruff on a man
Great interview
Thanks, appreciate it!
Great interview! Dave thanks for sharing it with us
Yeah, great interview.I'd love to see more of them.I watch a lot of your shorts
Dave, If Paul reads this I was wondering if you or he remembers Fl. Refrigerated Service out of Dade City Fl.? All the company trucks were blue and white, That was my first OTR company I drove for in the late 70s
I do remember them!
@@dave-smarttrucking7515 yes sir, At their peak they probably had a couple hundred trucks, Mainly west coast and to B. C. Canada, Many loads of concentrate orange juice, Produce back to Fl.
Remember them well. Carl subler. Auburndale Florida. Was another.
Great interview, a fainting goat song be A1😂
😀👍
It does ruin you. No desire for any other work. Now I'm an OO can't see going back to a company driver.
I did company driver again after the rates went through the floor but I was lucky and found a great guy to work for.
How can I contact you to submit a subject idea
Yip your telln the truth cause im burnt plum up
Know that feeling!
With the ELD or with PAPER LOGS it doesn't matter, the normal person who stays sober isn't going to make any more money or drive more miles, cause at the end of the week your tired either way, but with paper logs I can make it flexible and not be dead tired when I get home, I personally can't sleep more than six or seven hours at a time, I have things to do, do I stay up when I stop and go to bed three hours after I stop so when I wake up I can go go go, but if I wake up and have to wait three hours before I can go, I'm tired tired tired, sit around and then try to pretend I'm full of energy doesn't work for me, sounds stupid I know, God bless you guys
Now flip flops is king in trucking😂
It's a different crew out there these days, isn't it
Yes it’s a disgrace out here now. I stay away from them. Too bad it has changed so much. I agree.
Well why did the new automobile dealers selling people new cars tell them for years if they want maximum fuel economy get the manual transmission because the Automatic transmission will use more fuel ⛽️
I don't know about the rest of you, but I relate to Paul's music better than Tony justice etc, it ain't all hot roadhouse women, closed scales and shiny chrome.
