Dave , you almost made me shed a tear tonight . Man you & Paul brought back so many memories to me of the 1970's & 80's I wanted to run out the door & run across I-20 , 10 , 80 , & 90 again. Those days were hard but they were also a lot of fun , like running across Texas , Az , NM Etc . wide open with , 3 or 4 of your trucking buddies. I'm 76 now & man I would love to drive one more time but can't pass the medical anymore. Love your videos Dave & I believe we would make good friends , we seem to have the same views.......Ken .. called me KP back in the day .

Hey Ken, glad you enjoyed the interview! Talking with Paul was so easy, I felt like I'd known him all my life. I know what you mean when you talk about running wide open across the bottom with a few friends, I really miss that. Probably get pulled over for that stuff now. I'm not sure we're missing as much as we think, from talking to friends of mine that still do it. They tell me the good truck stops are all just fast food outlets now, the traffic is way worse and pretty much all the old school guys and the fancy trucks are gone. So I just content myself with my memories, which is part of why I enjoyed talking to Paul so much, it brought back good memories. I'm not very good with e-mail and such, just a one fingered typist, but drop me a line if you think of it, once in a while, be happy to hear from you. Take care. Dave

@@dave-smarttrucking7515 Dave thank you for your come back , it really means a lot to me . I know what you mean about the 1 finger typing on this thing , I don't know what I would do on one of those ELD things. Those old truck stops like the " Trippel T , Border Cowboy , I-8o Sinclair , Troutdale , Jublitz , Etc. Hey , I used to say if a trucker didn't make it to heaven they were sent to " Hunts Point " , Lol. By the way that's a fine Pete you have brother , I always thought the 379 was & still is the best looking Hood. Again I say , Thanks for the come back & may the Lord ride with you & wife.

Thank you both for sharing your memories. It brought to mind some of the stories my Dad would tell, though he started in the 50's when conditions on the road were real rough and trucks were pretty simple. He talked of companies having drivers in uniform and policies that stated you'd be fired for passing someone stranded on the road. True knights of the open road back then.
He just passed in January at 91 years and is greatly missed.

I had a friend pass away in his truck about a month ago. Listening to “He was a good Hand” helped get me thru the shock of losing a good friend. There’s a verse in that song that always hits me. It wasn’t for the money. It was for the ride. To hear Twin Turbos howling. Across the dark Santa Rosa sky. Thank you Paul for such soulful music.

Thanks Long Haul Paul for the most interesting story of your trucking and music careeer. I have a few miles "around the block" also as I hauled freight for 42 years and then moving to Chattanooga, and delivered new gasoline tankers, garbage trucks,semi-tractors coast to coast, and my last run was in 2019 at age 82.My trucking partner was a GREYHOUND driver for 33 years and he made his last run at 90 years old.And he was a safe driver. So we had 130 years and well over 10,000,000 miles and wishing all you drivers safe miles,10-04.Thanks Dave for sharing about Long Haul Paul.Have made many trips through Muscle Shoals on the way out west.

I love his music. The song Nanner Puddin is a true story of the 49er truckstop on i75 exit 49 the lady behind the counter a supped up base station named 38 special. I was a tobacco hauler and ran dedicated auto parts for honda. Greenstein makes me homesick for when i was a youngen running tobacco for Oliver we were one of 12 "tobacco haulers" my truck was 333 and made me a legend in my own mind.
Im 50 now twice divorced grew up the son of an Owner Operator.
I read every Overdrive mag i could get my hands on. Im a trainer now and the trainees i seem to get are different.

With the ELD or with PAPER LOGS it doesn't matter, the normal person who stays sober isn't going to make any more money or drive more miles, cause at the end of the week your tired either way, but with paper logs I can make it flexible and not be dead tired when I get home, I personally can't sleep more than six or seven hours at a time, I have things to do, do I stay up when I stop and go to bed three hours after I stop so when I wake up I can go go go, but if I wake up and have to wait three hours before I can go, I'm tired tired tired, sit around and then try to pretend I'm full of energy doesn't work for me, sounds stupid I know, God bless you guys
