It is so encouraging to see such generous human beings! So many books to give! Madame Bovary for some reason was a very tragic hero to me. The very end is absolutely terrific. Flaubert fell sick while writing the ending of it which I believe. I always had some sympathies for her. I read the novel many times and always discovered new aspects of it. She was definitely a reader. ... Who is Madame Bovary? Flaubert answered: "I am." Thank you for the video.

You certainly won't be running out of Flaubert reading material any time soon! A very kind gift from Jonny! I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing the differences that will surely arise between the 3 biographies.

It's a good thing I like Flaubert! I'm constantly so impressed with the people I meet on BookTube, what a group. I'll let you know how the biographies go. Warm regards,

I was trying to remember what initially drew me to Madame Bovary and I finally realized that I was doing a huge recommended reading list before I took the AMCTS (tests for med schools) and I was also taking a class with a huge chunk of 'feminism' in it. As I read Madam B I fell down the rabbit hole. I understood her side and the way that Flaubert wrote I also began to understand the male side of the story. It made me think deeply about what exactly is marriage today and what it was then. What trust one places in each other and how it has changed...or has it ? You are right, he has the exact word to make you think. I was surprised how well he saw and understood the female situation back then. I think it is time for me to delve into his other thoughts for us. Thank you !!

Thank you for your response. Flaubert had a way of creating deeply human characters, and relationships. I hope to read Madam Bovary this year as well, so if you get to it, please let me know what you think! Warm regards,

It’s said tur-GEÑ-yev (hard g, and the ‘gen’ is somewhere between a ‘gen’ and a ‘gain’) :)

I've noticed you're on a bit of a Flaubert kick lately. If I could make a suggestion, please hunt down Francis Steegmuller's "Flaubert and Madame Bovary." It's kind of a dual study of those two figures, one fictional the other real. NYRB came out with an edition not too long ago. Steegmuller is probably the greatest Flaubert scholar of the 20th century, and it's definitely not a book to be missed by Flaubert admirers. In fact, I'd gladly send you my copy if it wasn't packed away in a box somewhere.

I've seen that at book stores but hadn't picked it up. I'll have to put it on my list, thank you!
