So I'm a very early packer for the most part and i don't recommend decluttering if you're running very late... You can always do that later and right now you can follow all of his other advice to just get yourself out. Next time, give yourself time if possible and then you can declutter, but for now, just declutter when you get there
Hi Emily! Thanks for your personal advice. Everybody's move is different, so I'm glad you modified it as needed. :)
OMG man. Im a mover and there's nothing worse then moving a house full of nice furniture and then having to take a full day of boxing up items from the basement the owners say they're probably going to get rid of they just have to go through it first. If they would just go through it before hand. We could pack up the essentials and take up the trash part of it saving them hundreds of dollars. It makes no sense why people move stuff they don't use from one house to another. It's only mid/poor people that do it to. I've never moved a multimillion dollar house full of clutter and a basement full of stuff they don't use. Literally never and I've been moving for 15 yrs.
…..perhaps bc “mid/poor ppl” don’t feel they have the luxury to replace everything they throw away. Not taught to replace but to use what you have. Just a thought.
Some “poor people” hold on to things they probably won’t need because of the scarcity mindset. Some are just conditioned to not throw things out because they believe they’ll use it in the future.
too
If they have a multimillion dollar house they can afford to just replace things without a second thought compared to someone who’s poor and every dollar counts.
I'm a daughter of a hoarder who has moved a lot through different cities, and I completely agree with you! I hate the fact that what took the most time was to pack all her bags she never used and old magazines from 2013!! It's crazy
Love kondo
Thank you
See I disagree with this, getting rid of things in my opinion before a move isn’t helpful. You might not use something at your current home, that you will in your new one, and the amount of extra time it takes to really decide if something is useful can be hard. I personally like to box everything and leave getting rid of things to the moving in process, then you’ll know what has a home and what doesn’t based on your new setup. Plus moving out is rushed, while moving in you can take your time and really assess what you want and need vs what you don’t. Sure more boxes, but unless you have a limited space available while your moving, keep it all.
Yeah like I knew that I would be moving about 6 months ago so I've been slowly decluttering but in the last couple of weeks leading up to the move. It's been a more aggressive decluttering and it is really exhausting but really worth it so that i don't have to take a bunch of stuff with me. But the last time I moved I really waited too long and had about 2 days to get everything together and it was really just a game of throwing s*** in boxes without looking at what it is. I did not have the time to devote to decluttering.

Wouldn’t a professional mover who is paid by the house be incentivized to move slower?
Movers on HireAHelper typically have moves scheduled back to back, so it's in their best interest to get things done efficiently. And our customer service is great at estimating how long moves can take. The movers also really value high ratings from verified customer reviews because it's front and center when people are searching for which company to book.
Great question. :)
