Bill Vencil openly shares his knowledge and expertise with a child like enthusiasm towards music and creativity. He has become such an expert of Frippertronics that Robert Fripp himself could learn a thing or two from Bill. I love his RUclips Channel. Thanks for another superb video Bill, as I am a Logic Pro X user.
Cool. I see you're on Bandcamp. I'll be buying soon.
Thanks so much!
Thanks Bill! Always amazing!
that enveloper trick is just amazing!!! Not a logic user, but I'm hoping this can be replicated with any kind of transient designer.
Nice presentation Bill. Thanks!
what a fun setup. i'll have to put this together and try it. thanks!
Thank you Bill!
Thanks so much, Bill!
This is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing what you do!
This was a brilliant lecture. You are the man. Thank you so much.
Nice one! Love that Frippertronics jam at the end.
What a set of pipes on this guy! Can't wait to get into my next Logic session. Thanks
Thanks a ton for the video and the much needed inspiration! Bravo.
Genius! Thank you for the inspiration Bill, I am playing around with those settings on Logic this evening.
Wow, I just have to say THANK YOU so much for the effort you put into these videos, I've just found your channel pretty recently and it's helped me so much. So glad I found you! Blessings
Very Good patch no Doubt Love It Thanks Bill
Utterly brilliant, thank you. As a fan of David Sylvian's work, this gets me closer to achieving that sound.
Thank you so much for this! Huge help creating an ambient electric guitar plug in for my church worship team.
Results speak, sounds great.
Thanks again! Just spent 2 hours jamming with this patch. Wonderful. It's really great that we get all these Plugins in one DAW. This is all still new for me and this way I can learn how these things work. Also prevents me from going out there spending money I don't have on things I don't need.
Wow! I am so happy that you were able to take this info and turn it into sonic beauty! Love live Logic! 🙂
Cool, just found your channel today with exactly the info I was looking for to start writing music again. I’ve gotten bored with technique workouts and buying new stuff, lot’s of stuff during covid which turns out was me being too chicken to write and learning other instruments .😂 Time for me to start hitting the record button now. 😁
Gotta admit I missed your weekly uploads!
Life got in the way last week - working on more!
Thanks Bill. I've just got an idea for a new album. Hope the arm is better
Logic Pro is awesome! I bought it ten years ago and still living off of it. Over the years they added an incredible amount of features, instruments and loops, all for free. There is a big variety of stock virtual instruments that sound great, the guitar and bass patches are great starting point, the stock plugins are awesome. And Alchemy, oh my goodness, I love it unconditonally. It's a shame that many people disregard the stock features just because they come with the software. I don't know what's Logic Pro price today but those were 200 bucks incredibly well spent!!!
still $200 today (so it is actually getting cheaper if you take inflation into account :-) !) and yes I love it too, for the very same reasons you mention: Alchemy (a joy with a Jamstick) and the capacity to have an awesome series of effect. Just wish there were a looper à la Frippertronics.
maybe the best $200 I've ever spent
I too don't mind the Amp Designer to get things started. I can always later replace it with another amp sim but the clean and mildly distorted Logic amps are fine to get down ideas. Thanks also for a walk through of the Logic stock plugins which, even as a long time Logic user, I tend to ignore in favor of third party VSTs. The stock plugins are actually quite good and, as you point out, are usually modeled after older analog gear. Their compressors are really good also. Somebody has a video here on YT that walks through each of the compressor types in great detail.
In fact, yo CAN use tape delay as stereo delay. Just select Dual Mono mode when selecting plugin, this will allow you to set different parameters for left and right channels. Also you can use it as a modulation plugin by setting delay to 0, dry to 0% and wet to 100%. Then it bypasses delay and only applies tape modulation.
And yep, you can use any MIDI expression pedal to control any parameter in Logic plugins, like volume pedal that you can put after first compressor. And there you have volume swells without envelope plugin limitations! The one thing to learn is how to record midi automation, but it's rather easy to do.
Delay designer offers a grrrreat option to pitch shift any of the repeats, so you can create Adrian Belew style guitar sound with it. It's soooo cool!
Great tip on the tape delay plugin!!!!
Thanks for this! I'm working with the "old" Logic 9 Studio since many years. And i also love the internal Plug-ins, especially the pedalboard (my favs: Phase Tripper, Spin Box, Blue Echo). The space designer is also a true gem! Okay, i also use some external plug-ins. But my motto always is: Make more music with the stuff you already have.
Great motto!!
I actually prefer the Logic 9 user interface and wish they hadn't changed it to match Garageband.
I used to use Linux Audio but switched to Logic Pro X after getting m1 MacBook Pro , I love everything it can do in comparison.
Bill, you're awesome. I just got Logic Pro today. I haven't messed with it too much and I've been using Reaper for a while. Hopefully I can use both and be happy.. 😃
Reaper is great! Between the 2, you have many capabilities.
I love Logic Pro X'...been using Logic since version 4.0...it's an incredibly dense problem....with some amazing stock plugins to boot. Not much one cannot do with Logic Pro !
I'm too lazy. The Strymon Cloudburst will do
I second that ….love my cloudburst ❤
Hello Mr Bill: thanks for this video. is it ok for you to make a similar for acoustic guitars? Happy New Year (always grateful for your knowledge)
Logic is so close to being amazing guitar tone suite.
Amp Designer really needs an overhaul and I’d hope one is coming.
But for pre and post fx, logic has EVERYTHING as long as you’re willing to look for it and experiment.
I mean both will never be as good as real amps and boutique effects pedals that exist now
Thanks for this tutorial! Have you tried Apple MainStage?
weeeeell.. about the frippetronics: yes delay designer can work as a very long delay with diminishing echoes, but the problem is that you can't switch between play/overdub, it will always record. I wish there were a way to bypass the delay designer in your (otherwise really awesome) chain but without switching the effect totally off, i.e.e, have the equivalent of a "play" without "record"...
This was very good Bill. I have Logic Pro. But my audio interface died.I need a new one but not too expensive.
There are lots of inexpensive options these days!
check out the Universal Audio volt series, awesome interface
Audient Evo. Super little piece of kit
Can you make the Logic file available for those of us that have/use Logic?
Nice tutorial! what does the DirMix plugin do? I notice it's first in your chain.
The Directional Mixer is a utility that can affect the stereo image in different. In this case, I using it to ensure that my guitar signal is collapsed to mono with signal flowing through both the right and left side. In many cases, you won't need this.
Hi Bill - just wondering if I could get your input. Trying to replicate a sound and was wondering if I could get your learned opinion. Thanks!!!
W video
Bill do you have a video where you show how to use the computer with logic but using a volume pedal to do ambient music live? I can’t find any videos that are answering my question could you please please help? Thank you.
Hi Martine. I imagine you'd simply put a volume pedal between your guitar and the audio interface/computer, no?
lush
Bill....Although I have used Logic Pro for quite sometime (since version 4.0) it is only recently this former drummer has taken up guitar again. I have pretty much just used Logic Pro with my synths. In following your video here, I created an empty audio track, plugged a guitar into my Focusrite 8i6, and added one by one in the same order the various effects in the channel strip. All I heard either via headphones or my studio monitors was the dry guitar signal...none of the effects as you demonstrated were heard. I then went into Focusrite Control and changed one of the inputs to "instrument" from line as all my keyboards are recognized via the line settings. I also made sure in Logic's audio preferences that the input monitoring was properly enabled. Still I do not hear the effects (plugins). Wondering why following this instructional video I am not able to obtain the same result ? Appreciate any advice you maybe able to offer.... Thanks. 🙏
if you have not already, try turning on the "i" button on your guitar track in Logic. Also arm the track to record. Finally, mute the channel in the Focusrite control app. you should be able to monitor through the channel at that point.'
@@chordsoforion Yes...The "I" or input monitoring was engaged. Also the record button was engaged too. I'll continue to mess with things. Wish me luck. Thanks.
:Hi Bill....well turns out it was simply a matter of adjusting settings within Focusrite Control . All good now ! 👍
Hi Bill - is there a reason why you opted to put some of these effects into a bus instead of using the pedalboard in Logic? Are these effects more useable than the pedalboard analogues? Was it for visibility and better control?
Personally I find the effect pedal on the Logic's pedalboard to be rather limited and / or noisy. Logic could do with better individual 'stomboxes'. Or one could get Helix Native of course
Are you still use logic when E magic owned the company. I always thought their plug-ins were the best. Just a simple tape delay is amazing. You don’t even really need anything else.
I use logics stock plug-ins for mixing all the time. Where is the envelope or how do you find that?!
The Enveloper is in the Dynamics category of Logic Plugins.
Is it possible the same tools shown here are part of Logic Pro for iPad??
I took a quick look through the documentation, and it looks like the effects are there to reproduce it.
With the free DAW's available these days with all their effects built in, is there really any need for actual guitar pedals?
I think it depends on what you are looking to accomplish. If you are primarily recording and you have a MIDI controller with expression pedal, etc. that can be connected to the computer, then you can probably get any sound you are looking for. Live performance is another story
do one with a free DAW for all the ppl to see, Logic only on Mac and kinda expensive...
do this on Reaper or Ardour.. it's easy with reaper when you get Saike's reverb pack he made free for reaper.. Abyss reverb and Lava Reverb
Hmmm. Reaper is not free. I will however check out Ardour. Had not heard of it.
Pedals look great by themselves but with all the wires and mains leads etc. they are a PITA. I recently bought a US boutique harmonic tremolo pedal but to be honest I am disappointed by the sound, I'm going to stick with Logic, third party plugins and my Helix (recently updated to v3.6 by Line 6).
Logic pro = Garage band ?
Hey Bill, wouldn’t a guitar be important too!
Nah. Logic Pro has a plugin for that. :-)
Lol I’ve been reading it as crossfade all this time
Never Mac again ....sorry ...thus no more Logic ....
