Fun fact: Ai Yazawa originally wanted to be a fashion designer before she became a manga artist, that's why her mangas are so influenced by fashion, not just NANA, but especially Paradise Kiss. 😅

The one thing i love about nana and paradise kiss is it was kind of realistic you know. It wasn't like other animes alot of people related to both nana's both talk about realistic things Ai is literally a genius.

i think the difference in how nana o has very consistent clothing style and how hachi is all over the place is a great visual of their personalities. like for example it’s literally stated how nanas favorite things don’t change and throughout the series she typically has the same feelings and reactions to things while hachi is more inconsistent with her feelings and one big thing, the boys she likes. their styles are just their personalities but seen with our eyes

mai's style is definitely old school/casual, a lot of old school coords from the 90s/early 2000s have a way simpler look and many using pieces/silhouettes that look really different from the lolita of today. vivienne westwood was a huge staple of lolitas in the 2000s, a lot of them styling themselves with her bags, jewlery, and primarily the rocking horse shoes which became extremely popular with lolitas of the time.

You explained it perfectly, vivienne is kind of like the middle of the venn diagram between punks and lolitas. Even today rocking horse shoes are probably still the most coveted lolita shoe esp bc of them being featured in kamikaze girls (a live action comedy movie nanas voice actress was in, which also juxtaposed punk and lolita styles)

In old-school Lolita and Lolita in general, Vivienne Westwood is probably the most popular non-Lolita brand. Especially the rocking horse shoes and accesories. Lolita comes from old 70's/80's japanese visual kei/punk bands aswell so it makes sense why Ai would include a Lolita with the whole Vivienne thing. I'd call Mai/Misato's sub-style like old school sometimes gothic but mostly just old school.

@@tulip811 No, they made all their outfits themselves but their music was popular in Japan so they went over there on tour. Some fans in Japan got inspired by their style but it was not related to Lolita fashion or ever inspired it.

I've always assumed Junko's curly hair was perm because, there's a scene in the girl's bathroom where Hachi is crying to Junko about Asano or something, Junko at some point mentions there's a Beauty Parlor near the station and wants to get a perm. Then the next time we see her she has curly hair.
Bae this look was very much a slay, from your hair down to you’re accessories. Also As someone who is was young and obsessed with the punk subculture seeing this manga when I was younger changed my life. I don’t know if aizawa really understands the impact adding them in the manga. I feel like the clothes really describe the characters and their struggles.

I would say Misato's style very much reflects lolita fashion in the 90s, I wish I could link a photo but there's this book with 90s street snaps(?) called Tokyo Teens by Takashi Homma, one of the photos has a girl with a lolita headdress and blouse but also a chain necklace and a big vivienne westwood watch, it reminded me a lot of Misato! You could call it old school sweet but 90s lolita would probably give the most clear idea since even by the early 2000s there was a more uniform look to lolita. I really love her style so much, one day I want to have the same polka dot mini crini skirt she wears T_T

Sad news today, she has passed. What a pioneer!!! I discovered her work through Japanese manga/anime series Nana in the mid aughts, which is in many ways a love letter to Westwood and punk style. Truly iconic and thank you.

I love how NANA is becoming more and more popular than it was when the anime was released. It will always stay close to my heart, I watched it early since I was around 11-12, now I am almost 22 so seeing this on my feed cheered me up since now NANA is more popular compared to the past. Yazawa is a great artist and a great writer, I am sure that a lot of people were touched by the story and the art style is very high in quality.
Nana was one of those series that completely broke me as a teenager. It made me so sad, so angry, and I loved every bit of it. I was already heavily into punk/goth fashion and lifestyles, and once I started to get into more designer clothing and eventually went to college for fashion design, Vivienne was definitely a hero of mine. Nana is absolutely one of those pivotal iconic moments for those of us who love anime and fashion.
Loved the video, as all of them. I've loved Nana since the first time I watched and read it and got to discover a lot about the British punk aesthetic and fell in love with Vievienne Westwood's creations. Having been an avid consumer of gyaru magazines in my teens I always saw Hachi as an onee gyaru, which is an older gyaru with a style that's supposed to be more mature for their age and not as radical as a kogyaru or her sister's ganguro style. As for Misato/Mai I think she's more of a casual lolita heavyly influenced by her punk and Vivienne Westwood's tastes since we can also see her wearing the Saturn jewelry, the same kind of patterns and the logo printed in some of her clothes. And it was very interesting that you included Sachiko and Jun! What I can say for Sachiko is that even if it looks very childish you can actually find those kind of styles in Japan
yeah I know that Sachiko's style is very much realistic, but idk, their height difference, and her childishness just made me feel uncomfy ahaha

oh mannn I love nana, I started reading it in the 5th/6th grade and I remember begging my mom to buy me a vivienne westwood armor ring and orb necklace. She found an ebay seller that sold replicas and I was so excited when I got them I think that was like 2002/2003? this is such a good story, it's a lot more mature than typical shoujo but it's such a worthwhile read.

Im so happy you finally made a video on Nana!! As problematic as she is, I really like junko's character. I find her very relatable to myself in certain aspects. Also, reira is highkey a groomer. Like shin is literally 15! Istg if the genders were reversed people would be talking abt it a lot more. Sadly, their relationship is weirdly romantisized. I wish ai yazawa would've touched on the darker side of that.

Although I understand Reira in certain aspects of her childhood. The relationship she has with Shin is bad. Shin is a victim of different things that have happened to him outside and inside the present in which Nana is set.

I couldn't have found this at a better time. I've been thinking about Nana and Paradise Kiss even though I watched it a decade ago. Shoujo manga usually has the coolest fashion and intricate illustration but Nana & Paradise Kiss are something else.
I think the drawing style of yazawa is soooo beautiful and a great fit for fashion looks

First of all, you’re absolutely GORGEOUS I’m so obsessed with this look and the purple eyeshadow I love it SO, SO MUCH!!!💜 Thank you so much for this video bc even now 10+ yrs after Nana’s peak, I love seeing people talk about it, esp about the fashion!
The thing is (my two cents and word vomit) about Nana is that it REALLY influenced/started a whole generation of punk rock and goth culture in Japan when it was at its peak. My closest friends were HUGE into visual kei then and a lot of the visual kei bands during that time were inspired by western rock culture and Nana. In fact, there was a HUGE punk rock band boom because of Nana and a decline after it went in hiatus for YEARS.
The lighter that Shin wore is used in a handful of music videos and is one of the most famous and beloved VW pieces at that time (even now). People had skinny brows like Nana, wore bondage pants like Shin, and hoarded VW like crazy. Getting piercings is actually looked down upon in Japan bc of cultural superstitions, but SO MANY PEOPLE got their ears pierced like the Nana characters.
Currently, VW is still a really loved brand among the edgy, punk-style enthusiasts. Nowadays, even as the famous visual kei bands/celebrities sport more modernized, less intense styles than introduced in the mid-2000’s, they’re still seen wearing simple VW pieces time to time. If you actually look up second-hand VW pieces to purchase, a lot of it is listed in JP.
Nana Komatsu’s (Hachiko) styles had pieces (I believe, according to my friends that were SUPER into visual kei and obsessed with Nana at the time) inspired by the brand “Liz Lisa”. Girly, frilly, soft, and cute looking attires for girls who loved Hachiko’s style in contrast to Nana’s. During Nana’s peak, girls obsessed with Hachiko’s style went LENGTHS to secure pieces from that brand.
A lot of punk/goth brands that came out during the mid-2000’d heavily inspired by Nana/punk rock/visual kei doesn’t really exist anymore, but you can still find second hand stores hidden away in shopping districts selling all kinds of clothing pieces, even VW.

@@LisaFevral if i remember right she became ill so took a hiatus, i do think she has done a couple small things since in the past couple years but i'm not sure if there have been any updates in the past year or two on if she will return to nana or any new content. i purchased the special edition they put out for parakiss(all volumes in one) which i think has a bonus chapter but i've been saving the reread for a day when i need a good walk down memory lane. (parakiss and chobits where the first manga i picked out to buy. i had some other random stuff mom had picked up for me on trips but i picked those out because i really wanted to go into fashion)
edit: the point of bringing up the special edition was that i am not sure if that possible bonus chapter i don't know if it is something 'new' or something that just wasn't included in the original translations?
I think the last update from her was in 2019, she just said that we don't have to worry bc she will finish the nana series, and the her illness is not something terminal or untreatable so we don't have to worry about that either!
Nana is one of my favorite mangas ever and is what got me into catoure fashion etc. when it comes to ai yazawa when ever she does a manga her fashion tends to follow a theme of whatever she’s into for that manga like in paradise kiss if you didn’t know is actually a sequel to her manga neighborhood monogatari and all the children of that manga fashion are all inspired by their predecessors
Or influenced by their predecessors which I think is really cool :))
Nana and Paradise Kiss inspired my style a lot, it’s interesting how they were inspired by fashion designers themselves and they evolved with eachother.
I don't understand why so many people get weird about Sachiko dressing young. She doesn't dress that young anyways, she just wears a lot of casual clothes like denim, turtlenecks, t-shirts and camis (except that one outfit with the apple t shirt, this one is def kiddish). Plus she dresses in a way that makes sense with her petite body type. She would look weird in too womanly outfits.
Also I never felt like Shoji was weird for being attracted to her. Let's not forget that they're only 20 in the show. They literally just got out of their teens so of course they'd be more into people who look like closer to 15 than 35.

I loved NANA so much, it was the first manga series I started to religiously buy. And like... manga were kinda expensive for my pockets 'cause I was like 12 or something but the volumes were coming out like once every two months so I was like "Ok I can spend 5 euros every two months I'm not wasting money" (some people might argue but still... my mom was fine with it and that was all that mattered). AND I used to watch the anime on MTV! I loved the music in it, the artstyle... so sad that we never got an ending.

about Sachiko's style, it's funny that you said she looks like twelve years old😂😂 I remember thinking she was boyish when I was 13 too.
Recently I watched nana and I noticed that she is a very girly girl. I realized that she wears a lot of accessories and high shoes which shows she actually puts a lot of time into her looks, she wears make-up that is subtle but not as much as Hachi's tho.
and I love her hairstyle this might not be accurate but as she is already so short and has a baby face if she dressed very womanly like Hachi she'd look ridiculous, like a kid playing dress-up.
so maybe Sachiko struggled with her image a lot before developing her current look, and I think it suits her very well. I might have too much imagination but her style is just very interesting to me and very cute.
