    Good video. One tip to add to this is that rather than dialling in the split point via the data wheel you can simply hold shift and press the key where you want to set the split.

    Only have MODX8, but I still enjoy learning about the different synths. 10 years ago I didn’t have any ideas of even buying a keyboard, so I don’t know what I might be doing next year.

    Thanks, Scott! This helped me a ton. I had not even thought of plugging in an external controller to my Fantom-07. I also didn’t know I could change the MIDI channel receive for the tracks. Keep it up!

    Thanks for posting this. I have a Fantom-0 but had never really thought about using a midi controller with it. Nice to be able to do splits but also use the controller. Awesome!!! I recently subscribed. So far I have a System 8 and Fantom-06. Going to buy a new controller now. :)

      Hey...I"m really on the fence about buying the Fantom 0 as I keep reading that layering sounds ends up in dropped notes with even just two sounds. What's your take? How are you dealing with its polyphony issues?

      @@ramoneforbes2392 I have not had any issues with dropped notes and layering on mine, sorry, maybe Scott "video owner" can add some insight on this. I was on the fence too at one point but decided to buy used "Mint" condition and so far its been great. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    Thanks that was interesting info on how to do in Fantom many of the things that I already do on Montage. The interface (and terminology) is different but it still makes sense. The Fantom 06 is a strong contender of the MODX+, I am considering probably one of the two. It's silly how the Midi channels are fixed to parts in the Montage. Yamaha should address this in their next firmware update (assuming we get one...)

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Год назад +1

      It's been a request made to Yamaha by MANY people for years, back as far as the original release of the Montage in 2016. The fact that they've never done it makes me wonder if it is a technical limitation of the internal firmware architecture?

    • @sonic2000gr
      @sonic2000gr Год назад

      @@ScottsSynthStuff Maybe they don't want to do it as the main CPU of the montage is quite underpowered (unlike the synth engines which are quite powerful). Keeping it simple makes certain no events will get lost.

    Hey Scott--cool to see the workflow for doing this on the Fantom. I use a Kronos myself (and a Triton before that), so I've done a lot of splits and layers just like this. One thing I find that I also need to do on more complex setups, though, is use the MIDI Filters to specify which timbres should respond to things like the damper/sustain pedal, pitch bend, mod wheel, and so on. Also, I have gotten very into using "Scene Switching" (enabled via KARMA on Kronos, but I think there is something similar that is Native to Fantom): in other words, I can have multiple sets of splits/layers on a single Combi (a "Scene" on Fantom) and then toggle between them during the song.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Год назад +3

      You can do this on the Fantom (and the MODX/Montage) - telling it which zones/parts will respond to which controls.
      The Montage/MODX have "scenes" that can toggle specific parts on and off in this way, I actually did a video on this: ruclips.net/video/lMPv0s9eOqE/видео.html

I couldn't justify the cost.... I'm still building up a studio :) So Thank You for helping me justify and enjoy this!! Hahahahahha!

    Hi Scott! As usual a VERY informative video and you are appreciated! After a lot of reviews and youtubes.... I am about to push the button for the Fantom 06..... I'm pretty sure you are a Cubase user (That's what I use).... Have you tried or had any problems using the 06 as a controller for Cubse VSTs?? I currently have an Arturia Controller above my Roland JD2000 and I would like to replace it with the Fantom 06 as long as I won't pull my hair out trying to make it work..... From what I've seen so far... it seems like it's not a problem at all..... I just want to make sure I can concentrate on workflow instead of managing the technology! :) Of all people on RUclips, I think you are the most knowledgeable around because you share a lot of stuff that has made my life so much easier! Thanks Scott!!!

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Год назад +2

      The Fantom will work fine as a controller for Cubase, you just have to make sure that the scene you select at the time is outputting MIDI on the channel you expect - this has caught me out more than once. I ended up creating a custom scene that I named "Cubase" that does only one thing - spits out the played keys as MIDI on MIDI channel 1. :)

    I bought Fantom 07 for using it as midi master controller because most midi keyboard today are no more able to to manage multiple midi channel. I didn't realize that it is possible to use multiple same channels to make layer from external keyboard. Thank good job. Did you find important change in 1.03 firmware upgrade ? Roland info are not very good about it.

      I haven't even bothered to update mine yet. This is what Roland states:
      - When moving the pitch bend lever quickly, the pitch does not change to the minimum/maximum value.
      - Other minor bugs.

    Powerful. I don't really use split keyboard. I guess because I don't really have the hand-brain coordination to play 2 different instruments at once. But layering is always nice. I use that sometimes on my Alesis Prestige Artist, but it's only 2 sounds then.

    Thanks for this video! It's a great tutorial and demonstration. I would like to ask you, can I use another keyboard just for zone 2, which will play organ sounds? Can I change organ patches on the midi channel 2 via the external keyboard, without changing the scene? Thanks in advance!

    Scott excellent. Thanks for making a user scenario video. I just bought a Fantom 07 for exactly this topic. But I’m getting lots of anomalies especially when an organ is included. Why not just layer sounds overlapping their range and volume them in and out or turn zones off with zone buttons? That’s what I thought Fantom could do but I’m getting issues like it doesn’t always work that way. Is it supposed to?

    What are you thoughts on dropped notes and polyphony management on the Fantom 0? I'm a church musician that normally use around 3 and layers sounds. Piano, ep, strings, pads and bass and organs are my bread and butter. Then I sometimes combine brass sounds.

  • @wicksp335

    New to Fantom, to synths actually, i used a stage piano splits/dual, but now got an O7. Question: what is the easiest way to set up a scene for a song that starts with solo trombone, then piano, then brass, trem strings, brass/regular strings layered and i need to jump back to just brass and back to combined brass/strings etc..? I found the video on Switch Groups using the Pads, so each tone gets a pad, and each combination can also have a pad. Or can i chain the sounds in order needed in the song, maybe using a pedal to trigger the next sound or combo (ie if hands too busy to hit pads/buttons or screen)?
    Appreciate your advice, many thanks

    I've seen lots of persons say there is an issue with Polyphony on the Fantom 0. It makes me really afraid to buy it. What's your feedback. Is there a way to deal with the polyphony issue on Fantom 0?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Год назад +2

      Many of the more complex sounds (piano especially) on the Fantom-0 have many layers playing at once, especially in the lower pitched notes, which can eat into your polyphony quickly. If you are also sustaining notes, then yes, you can run out of polyphony with complex sounds. That said, personally in all the time I have been using it, I have never had polyphony problems.
