For those long evenings, I usually do timelapses with a plush I bring on every hike, and/or take photographs as well. The timelapses that I do are with a real camera and tripod setup, using image stills. It's basically what I do most nights I get to camp.
Thank you Devin for sharing this trip with us. Being out alone is a great time to simply be still, go within and listen.
We love the Sawtooths. Beautiful country. Sorry you weren't feeling well on this hike. Been there.
Absolutely beautiful scenery on this hike. As for the spiders…..that’s a big no for me too.
Great video! I read books on my kindle app, listen to an audiobook, watch a movie or show I download before I left. Oh and I type out some notes/memories of the day on my notes app. I find that I forget the little things after being out a few days so reading over my daily summary later can be really fun. It also helps me relive the day and appreciate challenges I faced and conquered.
I absolutely love the sawtooth mountains. I was in that area a few months ago and loved it. I swam in Imogene lake. Decent fish in that area too.
For down time i edit the photos that i have taken that day on my phone, i listen to a couple of podcasts that ive downloaded, and meditate.
Yeah it won’t be the last time I hike there. I’ve already got other routes planned, ha.
Thank you!
For those long nights I like books, movies, audio books, and to listen to music or podcast. Save everything to my SD card. Earphones a must.
My kindle is my best friend when I'm in the woods solo. No one to bother me while I read...absolute joy!
Going to do this loop in August; looking forward to it.
RE: 20:00, what do you do when bored? When solo I bring my nintendo :D , or I edit pictures on my phone. Sometimes I can nap out a storm or bad weather, then wake up to clear skies to enjoy the stars.
Great to see you on the trail. Sawtooths are amazing. Love the reflections.
Look for cool rocks and flowers.
Great video.
Awesome trip video, can't imagine those views living where I do thanks for sharing could just sit by the stream and lake and just gaze for hrs
This trip is next on my list of "someday hikes" so this is super informative, even down to the time of year I was thinking about! Saving this one to the library so I can watch this again when the trip gets closer. Thanks for filming and documenting your journey!
Hey Devon I gotta say I really appreciated this video because I feel like I’m more of an angler than a hiker and I’m always hiking TO GO fishing. Really love that you included this into your video. This is also my back yard in idaho and I love seeing everyone’s adventures.
Sorry I misspelled you’re name man! Also wanted to congratulate you on going full time with the channel I think that’s amazing and I can’t wait to see more trips and reviews from here
I just picked up a tenkara rod to take with me a nd mess around with...I feel like I will never catch anything but also never be bored. Glad I'm not alone in that experience! Great Video.
Thank you!
Thanks for being real. Spiders and feeling like crap happen. ( just not all the time)
Well I don’t do any overnight hiking so……lol.
When I’m on an overland/off grid adventure I usually sit back wait for sunset, listen to some good tunes and just take it all in.
Thank you so much for this video. I really enjoyed it.
Fantastic video! I'm glad that you were able to find that waterfall & campsite! Hopefully that is the pond where you started catching fish!
Thank you!!!
Try a tenkara rod. I’m from Idaho and it what I use almost all the time when I’m on the trail. The company is in Idaho as well. Tenkara Rod Company. Thanks for checking out Idaho. That loop is super popular. We day hiked it once but the opposite way you did and I counted over 250 hikers.
Great video. That looks amazing. My kind of trip.. solo, chill and trying to catch a fish. Oh man you're tempting me to take off now and go fishing. I just set up a few Tenkara rods I've been waiting to try. Some trout lures for the spinning rod/reel.
Congrats on landing some in those winds.
If I'm bored enough, I'll watch some downloaded movies or listen to some podcasts. Try to create more content. Keep fishing haha.
Thanks for sharing.
Love that figuring out the fly fishing. I noticed a year ago almost every time I'm out hiking I camp next to a river or lake. So I went into my local fishing gear shop and said, "Give me a set up. I'm still figuring it out, but it's fun.
You should SERIOUSLY look into the Bighorn Crags in Salmon. I did that Alice Lake loop and it was amazing. But the Bighorn Crags are my all time favorite. But great video! I enjoyed it.
Beautiful!
Podcasts, movies/TV, campfire. That's how i keep myself occupied at camp on solo trips.
I like to use my stargazing app and see where all the constellations are so I can learn to recognize them for the future trips.
I always kill time at camp by pre-downloading a tv show that I'm watching. I saw like half of Letterkenny looking up from my air mattress at my phone in the gear loft of my tent
What a beautiful place that is! Thanks for bringing us along!
I recently started playing a native american flute made for outdoor use. Weighs 8 oz, sounds nice (when i hit the right notes), Ive never played any instrument before, and its easy to play.
There’s a flute shop just outside of Capitol Reef NP that I’ve driven past hundreds of times. I’ve always thought, I really should stop and get a flute. This solidifies that.
@@BackcountryExposure An ABS plastic flute made by an indigenous Canadian tribe is inexpensive and suitable for backpacking :)
Love the content. Great video.
I’m happy you got to go out and do your thing.❤
Nice trip Devin! Thanks for the invite! I’m sorry I already had the Ruby Crest Trail lined up or I would have totally gone with. This loop is on my list! Spiders! 😱 Yeah I would have gone through my gear to get them all too. Sorry you weren’t feeling well but looks like you turned it around. To answer your question: if it’s a storm watch a movie. If it’s just down time meditation helps pass the time. Catching fish on camera is not easy. I get lucky a lot of the time. Such a beautiful place! ⛰️🥾
I bring a book. I also do side hikes off trail and explore. Popular backpacking places get fished often. My experience has been to fish more remote places. Add more miles and you’ll lessen your down time. Going solo in a new place can really stoke a person’s anxiety.
Beautiful... I'm a sucker for that combination of backpacking a fishing, so this one definitely stands out for me. Those are some amazing views and incredible backcountry lakes! I've gotta get myself out there one day. Thanks again for the great videos!
I can’t believe you, man! What a question! As long as there’s light I explore the area. It’s so big out where you were that you can wander nearby for hours!
Dude that is some epic wilderness there. Definitely on my list. Hopefully.the fishing is better on your next trip.
Looked like an awesome trip. Very beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing it. I download a few podcasts and use the audible app to listen to books when I have down time at camp.
I know trip videos don’t always get the love on RUclips but I really enjoyed this. Thank you!
Thank you!
Loved this video!! Ideas on time to kill: small activity book and writing utensil (word search, sudoku, crossword etc), small rubix cube, playing cards for solitaire or some other solo form card game. Maybe consider solo rpg. If you print it probably only 3-4 pages, could either use a dice app or take physical dice with you. Hope these help :)
I bring a small tablet and sketchbook. You’d be surprised how much fun sketching with a pen is. You have to just go for it and there’s no erasing so drawing is really raw and spontaneous. I also like to make lists for trips and sometimes journal observations.
That’s a great suggestion! Thank you!
Besides the wind, my goodness, that weather looked incredible!
It really was a beautiful week of weather.
One of your best videos in my opinion. On thruhikes I've often been alone, both on breaks and when camping. Particularly early in a thruhike I have to pace myself while the body adjust and have lots of time in camp. Exploring the area is of course one option, but then I could just done a couple of more miles before camping instead. I'm not big on planning, but usually check the next 1-2 days for water sources and possibly resupply options. That doesn't take much time though, so I always bring at least one book. Used to be quite a bit of extra weight but now I read using a Kindle app on my phone which I bring anyway and it have room for a lot of books without any weight penalty at all.
Thank you!
Alice lake is an amazing place unfortunately I haven't been up there in a few years but I hope I can soon
That looks amazing! And I live in Alberta, which has some stunning scenery!
Thank you!
Your trip looks amazing ! I would like to understand more about your logistics plan getting to / from the trailhead. The Sawtooths are next on my bucket list - the Sawtooth Wilderness Loop just north of your trail.
When I have long downtime in camp I will first spend time reviewing my maps - I always carry a paper map, with electronic backups. I use the time to review plans for the next several days as well as review the trail hiked so far. I sometimes will review photos that I have collected to be sure that I am using correct settings, etc. I will also just sit and listen to things around me or go on short exploratory hikes if weather and lighting permit. If I have more time and get REALLY bored, I do have an small MP3 player with lots of preloaded music and some movies - not the desirable disconnect from "normal" life, but it does pass the time when there isn't anything else to do.
I carry an e-reader. Every trip.
2:46 - Peak Refuel, Chicken Alfredo, is one of their most popular Freeze Dried meals because its so tasty & there is no much food once re-hydrated.
8:09 - great background footage of the Sawtooth Mountain range.
I thought you'd eat a famous Idaho baked potato at some point during this video.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
Thank you as always!
You’ll be happy to hear I’ve acquired an Enan. 😊

Heebie geebies indeed. I know bags and quilts get dirty but I always think they should be light colored esp the inside so it’s easier to scan for icky creatures. Only up from there!
You should have seen me going through my gear by headlamp. Comical!
Ok I'm about to get in my tent and thought I'd check out what my subscribed hikers had out. Well f you. I spider in my tent and I might survive. 2 and odds are I'm dead. Now I'm sitting next to the fire thinking did I leave the door open whilst I wasn't watching. Joys of hiking in Australia
This is a pretty place, but it's overrun with people. Perhaps partly because of social media exposure. Hmmmm...
Please don’t stoop to “coming soon” like everyone else. I clicked on it and then waste my time. Just post a video when it comes out please
Stoop feels like a strong word here. Premieres won't be a regular occurrence here on the channel. However I wanted to make this trip video an opportunity to chat with my viewers. Hope you enjoy it.
