In my eyes the DBS is a timeless, elegant car and the gorgeous sound of the V12 engine is sending shivers down my spine. Pretty much the last chance to get one , since the V12s are very likely to be the first fuel-burning engines to die out in the near future. In terms of performance not a snowball's chance in hell against the Porsche (especially on a track) , but, as you mentioned , that's probably not the point anyway, if you fancy buying an Aston, since this is rather a classic GT and a gentleman driver's car than a sheer sportscar. I’d much rather have the far more reliable 911! The DBS sounds heavenly but it’ll break down! I chose a 997 Carrera 2S over a V8 Vantage S with carbon pack etc.
My friend instagram.com/cardoso.collector/ has a manual DBS with supercharger, just over 700hps, that car is perfect for the road, until today it was one of the best cars I drove on the road! Besides being one of the most beautiful cars ever made!
As much as I love the 997 911, I would take the DBS over one (being a Vantage owner, it's a natural route with slight bias). The DBS is a fabulous looking car, it won't lose much money from the current values (as you've alluded to) and it's a lot less obvious. The Merc (also a Merc owner/fan here) is a great car, but it really is an awkward looking thing from the front. The Ferrari California, I've driven one and thought it was pretty good actually, just not their prettiest effort. Then there's the I8, yup, totally oddball! It's more of a flashy white good than a car with any soul. Despite its performance and the fact that it's a decent machine, I could never get over the fact that the ICE portion of its power train was a 1500cc 3-cylinder. All the noise it makes in the cabin is artificial. They're very interesting cars, but they don't seem to have any soul. Re: 2 Mondeo V6 engines welded together; the only engine-related thing it shares with the V6 Mondeo is the design of the combustion chamber itself which is the same, that's it. Everything else is completely different. I think it was Chris Harris' drive of the Vulcan that got everyone discussing this following a comment he made about them being 'welded together' which is essentially what the V8 engine is/was in Triumph's Stag (2 Dolomite engines sharing the same crank and block). This is totally different. Great review, enjoyed the video!

Just because cars share a similar price, doesn't mean they share similar driving characteristics. All the cars you're suggesting are vastly different. The DBS is a far superior GT car, but if you actually want to push a car in the canyons, on a rally, or on the track, the 997.2 Turbo S is in a different league. Frankly, many people who buy the cars on your list sell them and buy 911's.
What gives this video its most real-world quality and worthiness-of-being-taken-seriously is that mobile phone on the windscreen mount,,, NOBODY who owns/drives an Aston ever seriously uses that pop--up dashboard satnav screen as anything other than a show-off feature!!

Hi Jack, I had a 2007 DB9 Manual, which is the softer version of the DBS and now own a 2008 997.1 Turbo manual. Both with around 25kmiles on the clock. I have to say the Turbo is the much much better car in many means. I love the tight cabin, and the kids seats fit only in the Turbo, not the DB9. Not to mention the real reasons like adaptive damping, better control of the car, the insane power to weight ratio and clutch durability 😅.
To me the I8 should not be on the list...the Jag is decent and closest in heritage and design I would consider the Ferrari even with the Chrysler nav system and the high butt. The Mb looks good too but to me none have the Aston badge and the sound.
Number 27 saw one at my local bmw dealer when it came out not a fan of really anything about it especially given the very high price (was more than a Vantage Gt at that time)
Great review - thanks. Would this still be your choice over a 997 turbo (if you had a daily commute car as well?). Any other alternatives you would add to the list? eg V12 Vantage?
If it’s anything like the Vanquish S or DB9 then no thanks. I’ve never been so disappointed in my life than when driving those. All about a supposed image with these
When comparing different types of cars (sports cars, GT cars, etc.) it's worth mentioning that they were built for different purposes. GT cars (like the DBS) tend to be bigger, heavier, but more livable than true sports cars (like the 997). One being "Better" than the other is a matter of what the owner wants from the car. If you want something beautiful, rare and special, with an amazing sound and engaging driving experience, that's the DBS. If you want something smaller, lighter, and more sporting, get the 997. As for the comment about the V12 being "just two Ford V6s welded together," that's like saying the 997 is just a modified VW Beatle. The engine was developed in a collaboration between Ford, Porsche Engineering, and Cosworth as a V6 initially. Aston took the design to Cosworth, who used the basic architecture and created the V12 for the DB7 Vantage. Cosworth manufactured the engines for Aston Martin for the first two years, before Aston had a dedicated engine plant built on Ford's industrial estate in Cologne, Germany. The same basic design has been enhanced over the years, and in higher states of tune was featured in the Aston Martin One-77 and Vulcan.
Great car the DBS V12, but those bonnet vents look like they have been added by the local hot rodder rather than by a multi million dollar company with. They just add a slight cheapness to what is otherwise an amazingly beautiful and striking car. Another alternative albeit cheaper, is a normally aspirated 997 GTS. Not wuite as extreme as the GT3 but more character than the Turbo and steering is not numbed by AWD if you get the RWD.
I had the i8 for a three day loan. Don't buy it. The car is a jack of no trades and master of none. It's fun for a giggle during the first 24h but then you will get bored of it very quickly.

but of course aston rebadged the car and brought out the following model with the same engine... and called it the Virage was it? looks almost identical and is cheaper... ive driven one..and a merceded and a california. the merc and the california are amazing to drive, the mercedes is almost tooo quick, the ferrari wants you to drive it fast and is great fun, the dbs is none of that... its a cruiser, but an impact car. I agree with all you say...
For me, the DBS just didn't cut it. Much like the Maserati or a lot of other big cruisers. If I'm going in that direction I'd rather have the 4 door Alfa Giulia Quadrafoglio...which can be a cruiser and a street fighter. And I understand how the 997 Turbo was boring...for me all the new cars starting with that generation, are. But it wasn't the floppy paddles that got me out of my Giulia...the modern automated transmissions are pure driver technology. It was all the other silly stuff. If I was going racing, I'd want the paddles. But since I'm just driving for the "art" of it, I like my 2001 C4.

I8 is an interesting car though is it not? And pretty capable
Number 27 saw one at my local bmw dealer when it came out not a fan of really anything about it especially given the very high price (was more than a Vantage Gt at that time)
If I could ever afford one, I would never sell it or have it kept away. That would be my daily
Great review - thanks. Would this still be your choice over a 997 turbo (if you had a daily commute car as well?). Any other alternatives you would add to the list? eg V12 Vantage?
Nice to see you back Jack!
Thanks!!
Porsch-e FFS try and pronounce it correctly
At 85k your into a 991 turbo now...at that price it's a better car for sure. One thing you cant get away from is the DBS looks and engine. Beautiful
Such wise words. Just something about an Aston
Indeed!! Love these
If it’s anything like the Vanquish S or DB9 then no thanks. I’ve never been so disappointed in my life than when driving those. All about a supposed image with these
More uploads from you please my man😉👌🏽
Too kind, thank you!!
James Bond or Steve McQueen?
True... Steve McQueen for me.. but he’d have to alternate on his cars a bit more
When comparing different types of cars (sports cars, GT cars, etc.) it's worth mentioning that they were built for different purposes.
Thanks for watching and for your interesting comment! I know the V12 is not a mosh mash of Mondeo engines.. was making fun of those who say it is!
Yes agree.. the naturally aspirated 997s are better!
I had the i8 for a three day loan. Don't buy it. The car is a jack of no trades and master of none. It's fun for a giggle during the first 24h but then you will get bored of it very quickly.
Thanks.. have heard the same but something just makes me want one. Will have to try one again soon!
Terrific show!
And if you'd be so kind as to share info regarding your
Smartphone window mount,
I'd be grateful.
It looks to be a tidy piece of kit.
Hey thanks!! I can’t remember where that one was bought.. sorry!
proper and insightful review with opnion, please get together with other brands and garages and replace some of the tripe that youtubers with more subscribers provide us with. well done - please take a look and compare and contrast the daily drivers from amg and others....
Thanks for the kind words!!
Can I be Greedy Jack and have a Porsche and an Aston cracking video mate 👍🏻🎥👍🏻
Thanks buddy. Hope all good!
Number 27 yes Jack pretty good 😍
Lock down gives me the chance to review you videos, top marks, love the DBS.
What about the R8 V8/V10 with a gated shifter? The Coupe or Spyder probably goes in that price range quite well.
Yes sure, mentioned those in my other 997 video..
Your talking rubbish !!!!
I8 is a future classic for sure, looks awesome. 0-60 in 3 seconds. Only thing that puts me off is potential battery replacement?!
Me too!!
I have to be honest. I have always liked a Ferrari. There is just a certain sense of occasion when you drive one.
I enjoy your videos. 👍🏽
Thank you, very kind to say so!
Great video friend.... !
Yeah, that’s it. Love the power rangers leg for the gear stick, haha.
i8 is also a pretty nice car. Think even a California would blow most people’s mind...
😂👌
The DBS is sex simbol
This engine is awesome. In the V12V the rear breaks loose at 6k rpms...which makes it a blast as you rev it out! Nice review sir.
Thanks for watching!!
A GT? I’d look no further than a Bentley.
Suggest you sort out the subtitles - eg @3.01 " ..this cars bends captain as well"
Apologies.. it has the auto generated subtitles. I’ve tried removing them but seems thats not working!!
De-cat? Illegal? :(
The other obvious options are the 570s and the R8V10+ at the £80k mark
Yep good points!
Lmao 😂 no way is that better than a Porsche!!!! Bits of the interior remind me of my Ford Fiesta!!!! Shocking! How dare you compare that to a 911!!!
John Mitchell exclusive lmao 😂 it’s got ford parts fitted all over it!!!! Jag and Aston Martin with Ford parts lol 😂
@@MrBatwa Like Porsche with their VW overlords. You simply cannot critique the Aston without mentioning Porsche being one of the most diluted performance car brands on the planet
The name's 27, Number 27, licence to Thrill....
😂 .... licence to bore more like!!! But thanks!
Another great presentation, keep 'em coming. Maybe lower the cost prices a bit next time so more people can relate.
Ha!! Yes I just film whatever I can get hold of!
So I don’t have £80 nearer £50 max and I was looking at a Porsche turbo manual vs pdk and wanted your thoughts or maybe a 997 911 2s and then some mods.... I was going to hope after Lockdown there might be some keener pricing
Yes I honestly would not bother with a turbo unless you need something hat has that power for track days and so on. You get used to power quickly and then it stops being fun. Get a manual 2s...
Number 27 haven’t done track days but may start! I will keep going with the cheaper 2S!! I have my eye on a couple! So hard to keep hand under my lap to see what happens with prices ... once I make a decision I want to buy buy buy!!
but of course aston rebadged the car and brought out the following model with the same engine... and called it the Virage was it? looks almost identical and is cheaper...
ive driven one..and a merceded and a california. the merc and the california are amazing to drive, the mercedes is almost tooo quick, the ferrari wants you to drive it fast and is great fun, the dbs is none of that... its a cruiser, but an impact car. I agree with all you say...
Aston are ones for making loads of variations of the same model.. that’s because they’ve been short of cash for so long..
get both
The phone holder 😅
Yep, a nice choice
Enjoy your C4 John. Great cars
997.2 Turbo S engine is still Metzger? I believe it isn't.
I’m pretty sure it is... thanks for watching!
The 997.2 turbo is indeed not a Mezger block
I believe you're correct. New design for the 997.2 Turbo.
I think the 997.2 Turbo engine is more related to the 991 DFI unit. No longer a Mezger engine.
997.2 is no Metzger any more..
