I will still never get over the casual side step that Fern does towards the beginning of the fight. When she is just doing the slow walk straight towards Lugnar and she ever so smoothly steps to the side to avoid his attack with zero effort is so cold. Nobody ever comments on it, but I think it is one of the coolest little details. Then when she is blocking his attacks behind her back without even looking. She makes Lugnar look like such a chump in the subtlest ways. It's glorious!
Yes, that Fern Walk with her deadpan face is just one of the finest action scenes I have ever seen in an anime fight. Nothing that cold should really be that hot!
@@generalx13 she also manages most of the fight only using the arm on her uninjured side, which does a fair bit to show the seriousness of the wound and such.
18:35 Stark shows strategy in his choice of words, taunting Linie being weaker than his master. This tricks her to switch back to Eisen's style, allowing Stark to predict the incoming attack and how to counter it.
Aura wasn't trying to hurt Frieren with the Himmel comment. Like a demon, Aura just didn't understand what motivated Frieren to change and keep her fighting style against the headless armors. She thought since Himmel was not around anymore to enforce the change, Frieren can go back to the flashy, quick, and less mana expensive spells that blew up the armors. What Aura didn't understand was that Frieren had become and continued to be more respectful of the dead.
@@christianhowell3140 exactly. It serves to underscore the difference for demons about bonds; in that for demons they only last as long as they are alive and have no meaningful concept of carrying out behaviors who's only purpose serves to have an affect beyond their own life/existence. Much like how they only learned to talk to help them kill the other races. The translator chose to have Aura saying that Himmels' long gone, but in Japanese it was closer to saying "he's not here/not present." That makes a difference because Aura's not just simply pointing out that Himmel died a long time ago so what does it matter(and also because nothing she said mentioned him dying), but she actually said something closer to he doesn't exist and used it in present tense. So his past and future to Aura don't exist so long as he's not here now, so why do something that mattered to him? Aura, like all demons so far, denied Himmel's continued relevance to the world based solely on his not being here and now. Thats what cemented Frieren's resolve that the demons were still monsters and hadnt changed and that she was going to kill Aura without reservation.
not only have demons a different king of logic, they where also scared shitless of himmel. Aura kept undercover and only went back in action after himmel was dead. so even as an old man, his presence was enough to keep one of the more powerfull demons in check
You Guys notice so much subtle story elements which I only saw on 2nd or 3rd re-watch. Absolutely amazing! The fights in Frieren are not just fights but they are connected to the characteristics of the character we see. Also it always provide either backstory +world building, or developing of the character and show's themes. It is never fight just for the sake of it. For Example Stark's fight showed us how this class, fighters, thinks, while Fern's one is showing us how Frieren taught Fern to fight by mirroring her. Even the expressions are similar. I will say it again - Frieren is a masterclass of story telling and character development.
what makes mage fights in this show so much more impactful than other shows despite it not being a fight based show, and the fights themselves being short, is that there is so much logic behind the combat system. the spells don't just exist for the sake of looking cool, they are used with a certain precision and mindset. every zoltraak is very carefully fired with a simplistic, yet purposeful elegance that displays mastery over magic more than any flashy spell ever could.
If you enjoy the fighting and fight scenes of Frieren, you should watch World Trigger. It also has really well done fight scenes that are tactical, strategic, and make sense. There's a lot of planning and preperation and World Trigger really has a great combat/magic system that it uses and explores well.
The animation , the music, the fights, easily a top tier episode. Seeing Fern and Stark go off is so satisfying. Shout out to Linie as well, I think she’s pretty cool
You learn later that mental visualization is paramount in magic. If you think you can win, you will find a way and persevere. If you can't even imagine a win, you've already defeated yourself. It's very Bushido. Fern's confidence doesn't just come from her numerous fights in her very young life (when they meet Stark, she had already TRAVELLED with Frieren for 3 years, and before that she lived with Frieren for at least 4-6 years.) She's literally grown up with Frieren as master and adopted mother. Fern's confidence got a huge boost when Frieren says in the previous episode "You won't fight them because they are strong? Plus, I don't think for a second that are weaker than those demons." Fern immediately trusts what Frieren is saying because of her past history with her adopted mother: what Frieren was saying was they can win.
I know it's been a while since you guys actually recorded this, but the Zoltraak Frieren and Fern use is not the regular one, it's a modified version designed to kill demons, that's why Lugner said "Demons overcame zoltraak 40 years ago", because after humanity started using it, demons adapted, but this specific zoltraak they use is something they haven't seen before
Excellent reaction video! In all the action, there is a great deal of story going on. As soon as Stark realizes that Linie's cuts are only imitations of Eisen, and do not have the same power, he traps her. Stark telegraphs a high head shot which opens his side to attack. She takes the opening but that brings her in close to him. Even had she killed Stark there, his axe would have still come down on her and cut her with the same result. And of course Stark was right, she did not have Eisen's power, it was only an imitation. Stark fought Eisen on a daily basis even to the point that Eisen feared Stark.
Fern is basically the "i fear the man who has done one kick 10,000 times" of mages. An absolute genius in terms of mana and control all focused on optimizing a single spell.
The only episode were the Songs "Zoltraak" and "Fear brought me this far" from the OST are used. Awesome as fck. Cool funfact: Ferns Hair is every time flying in a other direction when she rapid fire against Lügner. And the Lightning Strike was just 1 FPS (frame per second)
i m not sure if that was the intention but it looks like Fern delivers the final blow with a "sneaky" attack after the demon dude lost his concetration when he saw Linei dying. not saying she wouldnt have won either way, we all know she would have, but this way it plays further more into the whole mindset of using any means necessary in order to kill demons.
00:53 The Japanese name is _Sousou no Frieren._ The word "sousou" does not mean "slayer". It means burying someone and seeing them off. As in attending a funeral, or perhaps being an undertaker and actually performing the physical acts involved. The idea is that Frieren lives so long, she's figuratively attends the funeral of almost everyone she meets eventually. But there's a secondary meaning to the term. Instead of "sousou" meaning you're paying your respects to a deceased person, it can also mean you're _causing_ death. It's basically the same way in English you can bury someone literally, as an undertaker would, or you can do it figuratively, meaning you're causing their death (either metaphorically or literally). So the title turned into a play on words in Japanese that doesn't translate well into English. At best, the show could have been called "Frieren the Undertaker", and the opening scene of this episode could have Luegner call her that with the clear implication that she's causing death, not simply cleaning up after it. But having that as the title of the show is iffy.
I've seen a few similar or better mage fights animations actually, but they're all in the remaining episodes of this anime, so buckle up! Good reaction. Love Stark baiting us with bravery, and Linie's fighting style and idea is one of my favorites, it's a shame we see her go this fast.
While zoltraak is ordinary offensive magic, idk if it's the version frieren uses or it's universal for oom but it's definitely been tuned specifically for killing monsters/demons
Its a modified version of zoltrakk like you said Frieren tuned it for specifically kill demon. Normal version of zoltrakk can't do any harm or a little damage to demon if you read manga. So most people use other spell instead.
copying Eisen's technique doesn't seem like a great idea, sure he's experienced, but i doubt his fighting style is complicated, you can copy the techniques, but you obviously cannot copy physical attributes, and for Eisen fighting style to be effective it needs Eisen physical strenght. Linie misjudged the optimal route imo, she should've used a more "agility" based fighting style.
Yup, the only times she did any more significant damage was when she used the momentum of the strikes. The final one didn't have any, and she barely scratched him
Neat observation. Linie was snookered into the side cut, but to deliver that strike, she had to come in close. Stark telegraphs his head shot. knowing that she did not have Eisen's power. Even had Linie killed Stark there, gravity would have brought his axe down on her with the same result
Thanks a lot for your great reaction😆....i definitely love this ep, it is the real MADHOUSE in my opinion....thogh this Anime have better ep🤐....is it not spoiler ? Actually i hoping next.😁
Fern's dialog with Lügner demonstrates she is calculating and measured in her responses, not dissociative. All I will say is stick a pin in the autism notion for a later part of this series.
@@neretilderem7029 Not just talking about the fight, I mean her mannerisms over most of the series. Reminds me a lot of one my kids who is on the spectrum. Yeah, she said it with the same confusion as the little girl demon saying "but the village chief is dead"

... for a demon's death.

I've watched Black Clover, Fairy Tail, Overlord etc. but this show takes the fucking cake on the level of mage fights by far (alongside fitting music)

Part of it is in 25 as well and it's glorious.
Why spoiling?
Pokerface is a byproduct of being a mage I conclude. Keeping control, emotion destroys control, this is not star wars 😂
Actually Stark is more powerful than Eisen. He is afraid to stark that’s why he hits him before.
I have seen better mage fights... later in this show lol. The way Frieren writes and paces out action scenes is amazing
If you love the mage v mage on this scene ,then brace yourselves in first class mage exam😊
