    One of my favorite points there is subtle, is that Flamme told her to live in obscurity and not make a name for herself. That allowed all the demons and people going forward to not grasp how strong she was. They just assume she became strong recently by joining the party of heroes but as Aura found out, she is much much longer lived than almost anyone but Serie and other elves.

      I mean, flamme is a human.. short lifespan, and she's not ambitiuos like want to hunt demon every day,
      she kill when she find or meet them. so thats why she not make a name for herself.
      flamme tell frieren to do that and only go for the demon king.

    In episode 2 in a montage Frieren was drawing a circle around Fern. After this episode its conclusive that she was teaching her how much to suppress her mana. Luegner saw exactly the amount filling this circle.
    Frieren has very high rewatchable value since it is full of such small details.

    Episode 10 is a masterpiece of both subverting expectations and delivering what people want in one package. The leadup, especially with episode 9, gets people to expect a cinematic fight between Aura and Frieren. Instead we get this, which is very difficult to articulate why exactly it is so good. I am at a loss for words to articulate this.

      its storytelling 101. Promise, develop, deliver.
      Fern conversing w/ Lugner makes a promise, there is deception afoot.
      Backstory flashbacks with Flamme develops the nature of and reasoning for the deception.
      It all culminates in a final sentence that is one of the coldest and most calculated moments in anime.
      It's Chekov's Gun: the masterclass.

      So far they have all missed the 55 second montage for the time between Flamme's death and Himmel recruiting Frieren and the .5 second montage for the 10 years she spent on her journey with the hero's party. The subtle use of time in so many places throughout this show. It is a masterclass in storytelling.

    • @Amaranthos2
      @Amaranthos2 5 месяцев назад +2

      It's the Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene where they hype up the big fight between him and the ultra fancy scimitar wielder, and then he just pulls out his pistol and shoots the guy instead.
      It's that scene, but done right; with all the storytelling fully fleshed out and the pacing timed correctly. It's hard to even categorize it as a subversion of expectations, because we all see a win for Frieren coming from miles away.
      It's the fact that they take the time to properly explain both the proportions and scale (pun not intended) involved in what would cause a win or a loss, then they add in even more personal investment for the viewer via the Graf's storytelling, then they add in Flamme's teachings that led Frieren up to this point in the first place, and then they hit you with that absurdly good OST to tie it all together...not neglecting to pull out the OST and all other audio except for Aura right at the end.
      Tldr = everything that could possibly be done to enhance the story during that scene, was done right; it wasn't any one specific thing, it was all the things. It's the Wall of Sound concept by Phil Spector, but applied to anime audio and visual storytelling.

    This is easily one of my favorite episodes ever, I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it. The build up to the reveal was so well done, I haven’t seen a show use flashbacks as well as this show does.
    This show always has a lot of little details that give you more information about power systems or characters, one thing to remember is Frieren struggled to find Fern the first time she met her which suggests she’s been training before they met( most likely trained by Heiter).
    Another little detail that always cracks me and very few people notice is Flamme didn’t mind leaving Frieren behind when they first met, she only turned around to help her when she realized she had talent. It goes back to a comment I’ve been making on this channel about Frieren being kind but she doesn’t necessarily try to be a hero, Flamme was the same but probably not as kind lol

    A few hours ago, there was some sad news in Japan. Atsuko Tanaka, who provided the voice for Flamme, had been battling illness for the past year, but her son and voice actress Hikaru Tanaka announced that she passed away on the 20th.
    Atsuko, who has a unique voice, was active not only in anime but also in dubbing many foreign movies.
    On a personal note, the most memorable voice of hers is Motoko Kusanagi (Major) from Ghost in the Shell.

    You mention the animation. I think this is one of my favorite. Watching Flamme and Frieren walking in the woods together by a pond, you can watch their animation in the water. I have read that the montage timing of Frieren's life between the death of Flamme and present day is well done. The scenes of her journey with the hero's party are 1/100th of the time of the rest of the montage.

    There have been no announcements of a second season. The first season goes through chapter 60 of the manga, and there are currently 130 or so chapters. Chapter 119 would also be an excellent stopping point for a second season. There's definitely the content for it, including a truly golden arc and a scene that would make episode 14 seem pretty tame. Hopefully they continue this anime, but the studio is infamous for not making second seasons for most of their anime.

    Flamme was most likely the most talented mage in history, considering she was human, and barely in her 30s when she first met Frieren and she was already so incredibly powerful, her only downside was being born a human, you will also see later why Flamme became so powerful at such a young age, i'll say she also was very lucky with her master :D

    The series gives you information when it's appropriate to the progress of the story. This is the first episode that we've been shown that visual of "mana" that is around people. While it has only shown the mage's mana, it's assumed everyone has some sort of mana around them as Linie in the previous episode said she "memorized the mana techniques of a great warrior", being Eisen, and she read Stark's mana, too.
    Re-watching this series again will show much information has been set up to this point and even farther.

    This episode lets you get a pretty good idea about how old Frieren actually is. Aura speculates about how old Frieren is based upon her observed mana. The (suppressed) mana aura of Frieren when fighting Aura is similar in size to the mana aura Flamme saw when she met Frieren. This suggests Frieren was only a practicing mage for at most a century prior to meeting Flamme. Flamme is said to have lived about a thousand years ago, so Frieren is likely between 1.1k and 1.2k years old.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 5 месяцев назад +2

      Didn't we know how old she was before? We knew she knew Flamme and we knew Flamme was a thousand years ago. I personally estimate that Frieren is closer to 1300 years old although she might not have studied magic as well during those first year.
      The reason is that she says "it was only 50 years ago" to Flamme, if she was only around 150 years old, 50 years would still be a lot to her. If she's 300+ though, it starts to seem small. She also was the strongest elf in her village and considering elven lifespan, it seems unlikely that she would be so at around 100/150 years old even if she''s more talented.

    • @ObiwanNekody
      @ObiwanNekody 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Arkayjiyaprior to the confrontation with Aura we don't know much beyond 'about or over a thousand years old'.
      I don't think she was more than 200 years old when she met Flamme, but any evidence beyond Aura's comments on mana, and the fact that swingset seems very significant to Frieren, would involve referencing manga spoilers.
      It is, of course, kinda fuzzy because elves aren't very concerned with a century or two and we don't know how old Frieren was when she started learning magic.
      Of course, for all we know, an elf in Frieren doesn't get potty trained until they are over 500 years old, which would also explain why they aren't super keen on having kids to begin with.

    In the scene where Frieren is recruited by the party of heroes, Heiter comments that Frieren has about 1/5 of his mana. If Frieren is suppressing her mana to be 1/10th of her actual mana, that means Heiter as a human priest has the same mana as Aura and Aura has 400+ years on Heiter. Unless there is a mana multiplier for classes (priest vs mage), it doesn't seem true that long life necessarily equates to more mana.

    • @jmthunk
      @jmthunk 5 месяцев назад +1

      I did some calculations on this a while back based on the verbal clues given and making some reasonable assumptions and it suggests that an elf and probably all magical creatures in the world of Frieren are gifted a certain amount of mana at birth. Based on Frieren's guessed age and her calculated mana, Aura's mana, taking into consideration how old she is and a reasonable guess of her birth mana, she had likely a little more than twice Heiters mana. Visually comparing mana in the anime seems consistent with this. While Aura mana is due to birth mana and 500 years of training, Heiter's is primarily due to what was gifted at birth- my guess.
      [Edited for additional comments]

    • @logikx1325
      @logikx1325 5 месяцев назад

      There is also some difference I think between the mana expenditure required by mages vs priests. Also using visual mana circle sizes you have to remember that the area of a circle increases nonlinearly. Doubling the size of the circle does not mean double the mana, it is much closer to 4x the mana.

      The episode is an amazing setup because as an audience we know that Frieren isn't going to die here. If having less mana is guaranteed death, then we know in a narrative sense that
      1) Frieren has to have more mana than Aura.
      2) Aura is certain Frieren has less, even though an episode ago Lugner states that any demon is capable of concealing their mana (he even states then that it's incredibly unfitting for mages when battling each other to do so)
      So instead the entire episode is about everything that built up to WHY what we know is about to happen will happen, beyond the meta-narrative reasons.
