How to replace a lever tap

  • This video shows how to replace a lever tap or a single hole tap in a washroom basin. In other countries this should be a similar job although the tap may be called a lever faucet rather than a tap. Replacing a lever tap is not normally that difficult providing you have the correct tools. This basin mixer tap was a little harder than usual because the ends of the flexi tails had been plastered into the wall. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/for...

    Ok, did this today. Many thanks for the excellent video. However when I turned the water pressure back on there was slight trickling from the head of the flexi. I have tightened this but still water is present. Do I need some silicone on this?

    • @ultimatehandyman

      Is it the end of the flexi that goes into the tap, or the end that connects to the pipes?

    • @jlowandbehold
      @jlowandbehold 5 лет назад

      @@ultimatehandyman Because whoever fitted the original water fittings lower, the previous tap had extension flexis attached. So, I took these off and attached to my new taps' flexis. It's the older flexis that I suspect may need replacing, or simply siliconing over the seal, but I'm no handyman. Cheers.

      The one in this video is just a 15mm coupling like this- www.screwfix.com/p/straight-coupling-15mm-x-15mm/79889
      Sometimes people use isolation valves as well which is handy if you need to isolate the tap etc.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 лет назад

      Well as it happens, I tried to replace the old cartridge in this tap and once I removed the grub screw I pulled on the lever and the horse shoe washer disintegrated as it was rusty- hence I ended up changing the whole damn tap!
      I have the old tap in the garage and will try a few things to get the handle off. You could try some WD40 or similar, that might loosen it.

    • @Snipersight00
      @Snipersight00 9 лет назад

      Thanks. It seemed like even though I took off the retaining bolt, there was still something holding it on. I even resorted to placing some wood underneath and tried to tap it off. It just wouldn't budge.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 лет назад

      Snipersight00
      I think the water gets in there and then calcium deposits and other minerals create a bond between the handle and the cartridge. I think the next time I do one of these I'll apply some silicone grease to the parts to help prevent the problem reoccurring. I'll try and have a go with mine in the next few days ;-)

      I have tried tonight and managed to remove it after giving it a few squirts of WD40
      You should be able to squirt some up the gap when the lever is in the open position using the straw. I left it for half and hour and when I got back to it I could wiggle the lever off ;-)

    Did you use plumbers tape on the flexitails? I have to replace our kitchen sink tape and it looks more or less the same process as this

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

      +aQSteve
      No, PTFE tape is not needed on these kids of joints.
      Where the tails screw into the tap there is a sealing "O" ring that makes the seal, at the other end there is a rubber washer on the nut that makes the seal.
      Modern kitchen taps are normally very similar to this, although sometimes the flexi tails are slightly larger bore.

    Wouldn't have taken much for the last person who put it in to go 90 degrees out the wall, just laziness. I also put a little sealant on the mating surface of the baseplate which meets the body as this is metal to metal as I find this seeps water. Crazy why manufacturers omit this basic thing, they but a sealing washer on the under side but not the other mating surface! Great video as always :)

      I don't know. I don't use it because I prefer to use plumbers Gold when sealing basin wastes etc.
      The new tap did have an O ring in the base which should prevent any water from getting past the tap.
      The old one used to leak slightly out of the top of the cartridge, which made the water leak through where the horse shoe washer was- eventually rusting it away.

      Not sure, we have only lived here for 4 years and apparently the previous occupiers never did any DIY at all.

    A plumber from the housing association replaced my tape and as he was finishing, he said, "a lot of people have drips coming from the back of the tap so I'm putting some sealant around it."
    This is shoddy work and the only thing I can figure is because he replaced the old tap with a smaller one and didn't line it up properly over the hole. I removed the sealant because he slapped it on with the surface still dirty. Now, it leaks. A new tap should not be leaking from the base of it.
    He also didn't need to put sealant on the base of the tap on the sink. It leaks from the back so I figured he left a tiny gap instead of lining it up over the hole properly.
    I'm going to try to reposition the tap. I am not surprised that the housing association sent out yet another cowboy builder/contractor. I keep having to re-do their work and it's annoying.

      @@ultimatehandyman - Any advice on fixing it without waiting weeks for them to send out another plumber? I'm not sure what he did, but when the old tap was still on there and hanging because the plate under it had rusted out and there was nothing holding it to the sink, there still weren't drips under the sink.
      He did say he replaced the tap with a smaller one but that still shouldn't be allowing it to leak from where the plate connects to the sink underneath it.
      I'm going to loosen it and have a look. Any help would be appreciated.

      There is not a lot you can do to be honest, apart from sealing the gap.
      There are different sized mixer tap bases, some of them do not fit well on a standard basin, for example this tap has a 45mm diameter- tinyurl.com/4a35vvp5
      Whilst this one has a 50.5mm diameter- tinyurl.com/msezhtrm

      @@ultimatehandyman - Thanks, I guess temporarily, I'll have to apply the sealant around the tap again. He used something from a small green tube. Any idea what it was or what it's called? I'm only finding large tubes of silicone which are for big jobs. The one he used was in a tube smaller than a toothpaste tube.
      If I know what it is, I can find it.
      Again, any help is appreciated.

      Yeah, it's terrible.
      I'm not replacing it though, as I'm planning on updating the full room when I get time ;-)
