WORKING LINE DOGO ARGENTINO - Banned & Dangerous?

  • Today we meet the HUNTING, WORKING LINE Dogo Argentino and compare him to the showline Dogo Argentino I met in Italy. Are they different to the showline and are they therefor more deadly & dangerous? Listed as one of the 4 banned dog breeds in the UK due to their perceived threat, however there has never been a listed fatal attack by a Dogo on UK soil. So should they be allowed back into the UK and under special licences, should all banned dog breeds come back? You tell me what you think.
Thankyou to the boys who met us today whose identity we have kept hidden for the protection of the dogs involved.

In 1989, 11 years old Kelly Lynch RIP was killed by two Rottweilers in Dundee Scotland. As a result the UK introduced the Dangerous Dogs Act. Four breeds were banned, ironically the Rottweiler, the breed that actually killed the child was NOT banned.

That’s heartbreaking, I can’t imagine, the poor child! Bad genetics are unfortunately running among too many Rottweiler lines these days, the breed is normally very stable otherwise. I adore mine, but I don’t trust any strange dog that’s a power breed. Too much bad breeding over the last years, and irresponsible owners. In the early nineties we had a huge problem with aggressive Dalmatians and Saint Bernards, both due to mass backyard breeding. Two breeds you never would’ve expected it from, but it was BAD, and Dalmatians still haven’t fully recovered in the US. Movies came out and every child wanted them, and unfortunately many unscrupulous people took advantage of the money to be made.

Dang... Thanks for sharing. When I was a teenager around the same time, I worked my Giant Schnauzer at the local Rottweiler club (in Germany). A young kid was killed by 2 Rottweilers belonging to Rottie club members. Well-trained, well-socialized dogs, owned by well-trained, knowledgeable and experienced owners. Didn't matter one bit - when that kid climbed into the kennel, the dogs switched to hunting mode and killed the kid. VERY ironical / insane that Rottweilers with their human-aggression running as potential in the breed are NOT banned, but Dogos, Filas, Pits and Tosas are. I read somewhere they awere banned to prevent a dog-fighting scene from developing further in the UK. Evidently, not to protect humans from dog bites.

I had a female Dogo for twelve years. She was one of the best things that happened in my life, I miss her dearly.
Dogo is the kind of Dog that could go hiking with you for 25km and if challenge could still run and jump in full speed.
Whenever I wanted her to go out with me to a nearby restaurant or walk in the city I first spent an hour with her outside training her and keep her running so she would loose all that excessive energy and be calm while around with people. After 8 to 9 years old she became older and her energy levels were reduced but she was still ready anytime anyday if challenged.
She was also a nice dog around the House, kept unwanted people away because she was intimidating while she had a thing were she didn't like other people moving things around my house or even worst trying to take them out.
On an occasion or two she pinned down a woman and a man who were trying to get some things out of my house(I had given them my permission). I wasn't around so she disciplined them until I got there.
Whenever I'm ready to get another dog it will be two Dogos instead of one.

Since I adopted a 4 1/2 year old Dogo Argentino from a shelter some years ago,I have watched every single video on Dogos I've come across. I want to say that while I get why they cause fear, they can also be giant puppies, like my boy who passed away at 13 1/2 earlier this month. Every single morning he would lay his head on my knee and commune with me, one of his favourite things, and mine, too. He was the most stubborn of all the dogs I've ever had, was constantly thinking about food, had the loudest bark you could hear from a block away but he was the love of my life and I think they deserve a chance to show people how endearing they can be.

I watched a video on here where an owner took his Dogo and Rottweiler to run free near a waters edge.. The dogs being of similar size.. The Dogo taller, and the Rotty thicker, but they were of similar weight.. They ran around a bit, and the Rotty would lay down and rest.. Then he would get up and run around for some more, before resting.. The whole time he was resting, the Dogo just kept running around, never taking a break! Not many dogs of 100+lbs. that can go like the energizer bunny! While rural UK might be ok for them, it would really be unfair to keep them in the city.. Most yards in the UK are really small, and if they cannot run to burn off that energy, then this can lead to accidents happening. They can end up redirecting that pent up energy in a bad way. They need owners who are really experienced. Being a good person isn't really a qualification..

We go to the off leash dog park all the time and has never had any aggression issues with other dogs. He's great / gentle with my 2 small kids and all of their little friends when they come over to play. Overall he loves people and just wants to play with other dogs. I am not a first time dog owner as I have had american bulldogs and bull mastiffs in the past so I am used to the power the Dogo Argentino possesses. I believe it's all in the training, setting limits and early socialization that has made him such a tolerant, friendly part of the family. If it came down to it I do believe he would protect us if needed, but it would have to be a serious act of aggression towards myself or my family if he would harm another dog or person. Beautiful dogs. You are spot on that ownership should be limited to people that can responsibly handle the dog. I see that a lot here in the US. People want a specific breed because they think it's cool or as a status symbol. But, they don't understand what it takes to control the dog. Or they see these cute puppies and don't realize how large and powerful the dog is going to be. When the dog becomes an adult, they end up in the shelter or at the Humane Society.
That's how I found my full blood female Rottweiler. I was at the Humane Society doing some window shopping. She was around a year old. I couldn't resist taking her home. I did do my due diligence to ensure that she'd fit in with my pack. She's a handful. But, nothing I can't handle and work with. She responds great to being worked. But, she has her limit.

Rottweilers are amazing dogs, but they need a knowledgeable owner and avoid those with bad genetics. Backyard breeders have ruined so many dog breeds.

I’m still building a relationship with mine, 3months together so we’re still getting to know each other. Something remarkable about him(around 2yrs old) is how affectionate and loving he is with me and people. He has the disposition to learn and adapt to our way of life, very smart and I notice how much he tries to be gentle but due to his size and nature can seem a little rough; he’s aware of his strength and and so he gets shy to play with me. He asks me to hold his food plate every time; he trust me 100%.
Here’s the catch, some of the comments on here about his hunter nature is accurate. He also behaves calm and collected when we go on walks, though sometimes his presence make other dogs intimidated and charge at him; the first couple of weeks he was swallowing all the barking he was getting at, while at home he would then relieve his anxiety by biting things in the house; little by little he started reciprocating the barking to the dogs that previously charged at him, and now he’s way less anxious in the house. It’s important for his mental health to let him express his emotions towards other dogs once in a while. He definitely has switch that puts his 125lb condensed muscles , thick bones, and jaw ready to rumble; almost unrecognizable.
He’s protective and loyal, while he also gets a sense of protection from me due to the care and management; we’ve bonded perfectly…
Oh did I mention how beautiful he is ❤

I think that if unpleasant things happen with such powerful dogs it's because the owners aren't able to handle them well....this is their nature, they follow their hunting instinct and are extremely powerful....but they aren't evil,no dog is evil but have their own personality which is dictated by their breed! For this i agree that for some breeds the owners should get a license in order to manage them well and not create problems for anyone. Congratulations Anneka for your great professionalism!👍👍👍🔥🥰

He hated people (He was a rescue) that I stopped from going to the pound. He had no prey drive for any animal I brought onto the property. I'd come home with chicks and keep them in the house until older, and Bruno would sit by them, even told our cat to back up. He loved our cat and played with him, but knew his job was to protect those baby chicks. He saved my 4 yo son from a german shepherd who jumped our 5.5 foot fence and, was completely devoted to protecting his family. R.I.P Bruno. We laid him to sleep September 1st 2022. I have many exp with many dog breeds.
I have 3 GSD, 1 Rottweiler and 1 dogo now
i can easily control Gsd and rotti with their prey drive problems. but the dogo hard to command when he see preys. My rotti have high prey drive too but he takes time and think for a while whatever he do but my dogo doesn't.

in my country 4-year-old child was killed by similar type dog lately and it was totally caused by humans involved... it is so sad how stupide can people be sometimes... so i stand with you Animal Watch, better to educate, then hope to delete the problem with banning😢
