  • He's HUGE & he's super loyal. He'll guard you and your family as well as snuggle on your sofa with you. He's France's best loved French Mastiff and Lionel Messi's dog of choice - The Dogue de Bordeaux - targeted by Hitler in World War 2 as he guarded his French owners so well, German soldiers were ordered to kill them all. This left this breed almost extinct but he recovered with a vengeance and he's back and one of the most popular guard dogs out there. Find out his history, life expectancy, how he behaves with other dogs and also with children.

Thank you for covering them. I am a proud father of a 3 year old DDB, he weighs whopping 150 pounds. They are laid back when they are around family but very active when it comes to guarding their territory. Have been keeping dogs for 28 years now but they are my favourite so far because of the experience he has given me.

As someone who had some of the only working Bordeaxs in the UK (premise guarding) I love this breed with all my heart, sadly since the French breed standard did away with the upper weight limit it has become harder and harder to get them with a good life expectancy meaning I will no longer have them(thanks show breeders)
I now with the aid and exposure to the episode you did with BoarBoel I now have them in training and they are incredibly similar in so many of the best ways but “hopefully” with a vastly improved life expectancy.

He had cardiomyopathy n so so wanted him to make to 8 but ultimately that was just love n my selfishness n he died in my arms at home n the pain of loss was truly unarming lost a part of me truly. Couldn't get a dog for 4 years. Always had a dog n he (Tyson rescue name) went everywhere with me, work, toook my van seats out passengers went in the back, he loved the pub had that place locked down for perperami's, n on the bench like a stone lion guarding the pub. They never leave you love n talk about him still, he knew everyone I was just his side kick.

Here in the Netherlands I was looking for the Broholmer. Only 2 breeders here. And it is really really really hard to get one! If you do, than you have to go to Denmark etc. You can't have them just as a pet. I beleave you have to be in a breeding program etc. That is what I saw on the websites of the breeders. I don't want that. I just want a sweet pet dog. A family friend. Now we are looking to get a greater swiss mountain dog. I love the movie Turner and Hooch! That got my attention for the Bordeaux dog. 5 to 6 years is way to short for me. We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback. He was a sweetheart. But I would love to have a dog that is more relaxed.

    • @animaladventurer
      @animaladventurer 4 месяца назад +1

@@sonjaruiter6663 I'm sure there are Broholmer breeders who breed dogs for human companionship. I think it really comes down to what they find out from clients and what their intentions are. Maybe, and I could be wrong, there are clients who want dogs so that they can start their own breeding program but I don't think that's always the case. Nice you are looking for a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog - they're beautiful dogs. Good luck.

I love all dogs even though I got bitten in both of my legs by 2 large dogs when I was 12 years old. I was playing and running on the street and the stray dogs might annoyed to see me like that. Luckily my mom was there, so she quickly save me. She even told me not to run in front of dogs and she didn't even blame the dogs because most of the people in my country knows the dogs don't like someone strangers running in front of them. There are a lot of stray dogs in my country but most people including me love them. One of the good things about the stray dogs is they can alert you at night by barking when some thief come near the house or some strangers who are not from the quarter/village entering the area. That's why most people feed the stray dogs and let them live as they please.

Intersting thing about the short lifespan - Beasley (the dog that played Hooch) actually lived to be 13, so it shouldn't be a given that they"ll all die very young. Perhaps they need some other breed(s) bred in for a few generations to help get that lifespan up and expand the gene pool. If you look at 'Hooch' he looked to be a lighter, leaner dog than these guys and some others you see. Those historic photos also showed these dogs to be lighter framed and have longer muzzles which would make their breathing better.

I like this breed alot, but you cant tell the difference beetween the dog in the movie and this show type dogs, and that is the problem they want a guarding dog , but they dont want the temperament and the work and teaching that is necessary to have a balanced dog, therefore it is easier to create a couch dog, wich becomes fat, with is nose tucked in, more docile and which will last less time, because they already remove from the dog the characteristics that made him a guard dog.

Cool, always wondered about this breed. Having a French parent, we used to vacation in France but I don’t recall seeing them, (my French relatives had giant schnauzers and labs). Would probably be great as part of a mix, but as they are, short lifespan would be a deal breaker for me.

As a former Dogue de Bordeaux owner, I can say everything that was said about them in the video was correct. Their short life span is due to the fact that the gene pool the current Bordeauxs began with is so small. One thing about them that I wish were emphasized more before I got mine (and would be helpful to any prospective owner) is their heat intolerance. They are not suitable for hotter climates and can die from heatstroke due to their inability to cool themselves because of the shape of their muzzle and palette. They must not be outdoors for extended periods during high temperatures.

Had one when i was young, they are very easy going , a bit wary at strangers ( but once ok , they are friendly and stable. They will guard property, even when they may look kind of aloof . Problem is their massive structure so what this lady tells is 100 correct , jumping , even un - controlled running can be bad for them especially in their grown state. I never found them stubborn , actually i found mine very obedient , just slow , they do everything slow . Just do not underestimate them when angry , they will not easily back down when challenged and this breed , maybee more then any other breeds, read people like a book . If your one is not liking you or even accepting you , then maybee its time to take that as a note to yourself to improve your state of being. They can and will give you the most human look ( their eyes ) that aint be seen in other breeds .
These dogs really have some kind of 6th sense .
I experienced it , and other owners confirmed this.
The deep red ones with their yellow / green / hazel eyes can stare right into your soul. Mine was a female , very powerfull , compact and pretty low to the ground , once in the summer time my frontdoor was open by accident , nightime .. because next morning i woke up , door open , and she was laying their just on the floor guarding i know for sure it was not the average beauty sleep .
They connect extremely deep with their owners .
    A truly amazing breed .

Mine is very sassy and loving. Very different than my cane corso was, corso wanted to please me and DDB is much more stubborn and independent. Love both breeds.

Would not have a dog that lives to five or six years old. I love the looks, but the pain of losing a much loved companion would be to much to bare.

Agree with almost everything said about the personality and temperament of a DDB, powerful, gentle and loving dogs. Stubborn and wilful too. Mine however was a pretty rubbish guard dog! My DDB lived until he was 10 years old, and I am thankful of all that time that I had with him. A beautiful breed of dog.

Second this... I have come in the house before and she has been absolutely out for the count. Snoring. She is the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Broke the guinea pig cage at 6 months old and was laid down with them eating their food, whilst they played around her. Absolutely loves the kids. Is so gentle with other puppies and people and considering she was 45kg at 14 months, was not small.

We use breed DBD . So beautiful all of our where dark red with just a white blaze on chest . You can purchase slobber cloths definitely a must . Our all lives over 10 . They really are great with kids and love getting dressed up ours always went to sons football matches with their own jersey 's . Such beautiful cuddly dogs but they do try and get on your knee for cuddles.
