    Finally I bit the bullet and delided my ps3 CPU for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE .... and guess what , I succeeded !!!!!!!!!!!!
    The method with nail pile is just brilliant , it's the most safest way to delid the CPU
    BTW , after delid I did a cold test to see if I screwed up the CPU , I almost shat my pants when I saw blinking yellow light but then I realised I didn't plug the PSU on those 2 thick metal conductors on the mother board , thanks god ........ LONG LIVE NSC !!!!

    I've had many Game Overs with PS3s doing this with ultra sharp, ultra thin blades. It is faster, but if the silicon drives the blade the wrong way, you will scratch the CPU instantly. This is pretty much the best guide.

    Repaired successfully! I used on the cpu (Cell BE) a "Oil Knife Spatula

    overheating and auto-shutdown, it's like new! THANKS YOU!

    I'd just like to say thanks to UltraNSC for his repair vids. I have managed to turn a £30 eBay PS3 that sounded like a jet engine after 5 minutes to super quiet machine that stays on for hours playing games with no problem. I used an art "knife" from hobby craft to take the CPU heat spreader off using the same technique as in this video. Make sure you do the finger nail test first :0)

    I did mine yesterday. Great videos you helped a lot a gotta say I was sweating bullets doing the cpu. I did it a little different I used a feeler gauge that I sanded the edge with a dremal. Took what seemed like forever to get it to start cutting the silicone but once it was in it started going easy just went really slow. Did your cooling mods also and speed up the fan. Runs super cool now only 100 degree f coming out the back gaming.

    Do you notice that the RSX chips on the slims have more of the thermal glue or tend to hold better than the fats? I've been able to do 2 successful delidding on a couple of my fatboys, but I had to throw in the towel the other day after attempting it on my slim. It looked like I could see more glue overlapping the chips than I had previously seen on my fat consoles.

    • @NSC-Modz

      That's right, but it's also because the thermal glue on the Fat's is very old 🙈

    Do you know what kind of temps I can expect (PS3 Slim) in modern games if I remove both IHS and fully replace the thermal compound - without drilling holes in the case? I already replaced the thermal paste above both IHS but I have to use fan control software to keep temps down and it's loud in newer games. Thanks

    Nope another one of mine dead. Was fully working but fans running at 2nd highest setting but not really even blowing warm. After modifying some nail files like in your video I still couldn't cut through the damn silicone. Gave up, reassembled with fresh thermal paste. RLOD. Dead. I hate the PS3 Fat. Sony's worst console ever. I'd be tempted to say if yours runs, leave it alone, you'll only kill it.

      Wow. This is much harder than it looks. I have made the tool from the nail file as you have shown. But the gap between the ihs and the chip board is so tiny. And the glue/silicone is very strong on my PS3. My nail file point will just not cut through it. It’s very difficult.

      NSC Modz Thanks NSC I did it in the end! It took a lot of effort, heating a little bit, doing some more. Heating a little and doing some more. Etc. I wish I could post a pic, but the cell chip has almost no thermal compound left!! Unbelievable. If this PS3 works after being that way for so long, I will be amazed.
      Edit: I think my PS3 cpu has been de-lidded before as hardly any silicone on the board. But I have also noticed a scratch on the board holding the chip. Not rebuilt yet, but could be fatal for my PS3. :-(

    With this method remove IHS from GPU on my model is just impossible. My PS3 is CECH 2504B. It's look there is no silicon on VRam just some kind of glue, hard like a hell. Accidentally I made a little scratch on chip laminate, close edge. Lucky it looks that GPU working without any issues. I think only hotair is solution for me...

  • @NSC-Modz
    @NSC-Modz  11 лет назад

    yes, looks like, BUT TAKE CARE AT THE CELL CPU ! ! !
    you need a real thing tool to get there inside without to scratch the CPU (CELL)
    in my eyes its better to open both, so you dont need it to open again if it was not the other Chip ^^
    but its up to you, mostly its the CELL CPU, but sometimes its also the RSX GPU
    i open always both, i begin with the RSX then i go to the CELL Chip!
    Just work slowly, with Pacience and with A LOT care at the CELL CPU !

    trying to remove RSX plate right now, but razor blade wont go any deeper than 3mm, how long i should be heating IHS with hair dryer (i doing ~20 seconds of heating) and it dosent seem to do much, besides making too hot to toutch with bare skin.

    • @SougoUltimateSadist
      @SougoUltimateSadist 8 лет назад +1

      never mind, needed atleast 1minute of heating with hairdryer to even loosen up RSX glue/thermal paste.
      Tryer to cut 2 corners, but remaining 3 acces points were horrible, so just heated up bit more and used lift force and it poped nicely and now my finger tips hut like crazy from pushing that razor around.
      CPU was easy once i got right thikness of fingernail file (its around 2~3/10ths of a Milimeter)
      now waiting for thermal paste to arrive and hope that i havent damaged anything as i have yet to complete many games on that console.

      *update* the MOD was succesful, my ps3 is no longer in jet mode, keeping ~50c on both rsx and cpu while in iris man
      EDIT: after playing game for couple of hours CPU was at 61c RSX 69c, meanwhile fan was spinning at low rpm and couldint hear it if i was focused on game.
      Before MOD temperatures were oddly ~70c CPU, RSX ~65c and fan spinning really loud.
      P.S. at first i forgot to put HDD back in since i had cover on i thought i already did that, and when i launched ps3 i had black screen and panic attack, only realised that iam not hearing HDD start up and saw it laying on my work table Q.Q

      Hej man, Im having a hell of a time doing this- can you find a similar fingernail file online? aliexpress, ebay or something? I've been trying files that Ive found in local shops, and none can even get under the top CPU top metal pad

    • @SougoUltimateSadist
      @SougoUltimateSadist 8 лет назад

      My fingernail (it was really old one too) file was similar to the one used in video.
      If it dosent fit, all you have to do is sand it more with rought sand paper (i used 200) then use 1000 grit sand paper (or higher) with water, before trying to fit it under IHS. Mine dint fit first 10 times too.
      The tip has to be around 3 times thinner than middle part of file, so it goes into CPU space without any force needed.
      Here is my file imgur.com/SVD8PFa used extra tape for grip.
      And here is blurry side view for reference of thikness imgur.com/JtqEvPg

    Hi, hopefully this video will help me fix my ps3 slim.
    Is this the same for the ps3 slim chips ?
    I went to do a normal thermal paste maintenance and after replacing the thermal paste and closing the console the fan goes crazy in 5 seconds, its all full speed then the console says the ps3 is overheating But the chips are not hot at all.
    Maybe I need to remove the IHS and reaply thermal paste under it ?

    • @NSC-Modz

      Yea, the Problem is "under" the Heatspreader, old Thermal Compound

    • @Cloudsareinthesky

    • @NSC-Modz
      @NSC-Modz  10 лет назад

      You will need to remove the IHS = HEATSPREADERs = those Metall plates, and under there you will need to add new Thermal Compound...
      But i recomend you to watch some more Videos on my Channel about this, because it Looks easy when i do it, but its not that easy as it Looks like xD
      For the CELL CPU you will need also an extra thin tool, otherwise you will destroy your CPU...
      Without a great tool "CPU Cuter", the risk to damage it is High!

Terrible advice from NSC to delid this. Super Slim consoles have a smaller RSX and cell revision + a power supply that produces less heat. They RARELY overheat even on old thermal paste.

    Damn...tried this without the proper tool on a cecha01 and broke a corner off the cpu. GAME OVER. Wish I saw this before I put in hours disassembling it. Get the right tools for the job!
