- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #345
One of the first ever videos I made for my channel was of me wandering around this quaint, semi-ghost town in central Nevada called Austin. I've been meaning to go back and do a better job, and I recently had the chance when my friends Larry, John and I were camping at a nearby hot spring. We all piled into my rig and headed into town to do some exploring...and it was fascinating!!

As a child, I lived in that second house you peeked into. It was around 1990. I’m so glad to have found this video. Thank you.
So I lived in Austin for four years, washed dishes at the international, the owl club was around then as well!!! What a blast From the past👍😁
I thought the Owl Club was in Eureka... Guess there was one in both towns because I ate at the Owl Cafe next to the Owl Casino when I was there a month ago.
Washing dishes at the International was my very first job as a kid.
@@MrJessevick I´ve washed some dishes there too, but mostly I made them dirty by eating Vicky´s awesome food back in 1995.
We moved from Austin in 1948. I was 12 and my dad was a Forest Ranger. The Shell truck belonged to Mastretti and Son who also had the DC Power for the town. The Odd Fellows Hall was the Town Pump. I learned to dance at the Hotel Austin and my buddy's dad Bill Williams owned the Golden Saloon (burned) Frank Aldape owned the Silver Dollar Saloon. Reed (Georgia's dad) owned the cafe and soda fountain. Vigus owned the grocery store and the JP was Bert Acre. He and wife Millie were the Sax and Piano orchestra for the dances. Great place to grow up.
I
I would like to see more of NV just on the basis of watching the WH
“Gly”: I spent two months in Austin this year exploring abandoned mines in the area for my RUclips channel. I really enjoyed Austin and the people there are just awesome.
Great second video on Austin Sarah. Couple years ago on my way back from Arizona bike week , I decided to go to Tonopah get gas and then I headed towards Austin , there was a stop sign about 5 miles out of Tonopah and a mining town about halfway in between which did not have an open gas station 101 miles after the 1st. stop sign I came to the next stop sign and there was nothing there either. Well I could go right to Eureka 43 miles or left to Austin for 16 mi. It was midnight and I was almost out of gas so I took a left , all the sudden the sign said 35 miles an hour which usually I kind of ignore but I chose to pay attention and slow down and boy am I glad I did. The road got very twisty and started to descend , before me appeared this little town on the hill. However every motel was full of pick up trucks obviously miners of some kind, but at least they had open gas stations. The wind was blowing it was kind of cold so I filled up and headed to battle Mountain and nobody could’ve told me that you can go downhill for 61 miles anywhere in America but that’s what I did. Checked into a motel in battle Mountain. The next morning all the hills were covered in snow just above me so I guess it was a good thing I did not stop in Austin. But I’m definitely going back . Great video,
Evidently, one more gold & silver mining town that exhausted its $50 million in ore production and turned into another ghost town of a bygone era. Good video, Sarah.. keep 'em coming!
In the Early 90's there was a grocery store. Worked on a ranch nearby and used to go there on occasion.
Debbie Mclaughlin .. cowgirls like you rock!
Thank you for the info Debbie
I used the restroom there once.
And a hardware store, good places to eat and a couple of more gas stations.
Oh I need a road trip to Nevada
I drove from Phx to Lake Tahoe for our family reunion. Best trip ever. Through the Mohave desert. Lone Pine, Bishop, Fredericksburg. I camped in an abandoned adobe and rock cabin near Mono lake. After Tahoe we went to the real nice old mining town(Virginia city? It's been a while). I'd move to a place like Austin. I see trees. If WH ever comes into a pile of money she'd probably spend it on fixing up that old bar. Probably a bad investment but I get it.
I went to Austin in 98, Camped in Berlin and visited Grantsville and Ione Loved it!
Sarah,
That was Austin( I mean Awesome) :)
I spent two summers travelling the US back in the 60's and it's small towns like this that are the heart of the country.
So many memories(sigh)
Thank you so much..This is a winner!
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Or maybe the soul of the country.
When I was a kid, we (my parents and the whole family) broke down in Austin twice! One time we had to be towed all the way back to Fallon. I think it's 105 miles. And it was so hot. Over 100 degrees. Lol. But I love Nevada so much! I lived in Sparks for two years. It's my adopted home state.
US 50 runs from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD. A little over 3,000 miles and about a dozen states I think. It goes through IN and IL about 30 miles North of where I live. It was a big deal before the Interstate highway system.
I like the sign. "What Happens in Austin You Brag About"
I lived just outside of Austin in 1965. It was a gas station, restaurant and motel. If I remember right, it was called the Frontier Cafe or Restaurant.
Thanks Sara. i drove this highway towing a trailer 100 mph on cruise control for about an hour and fourty min. its lonely but beautiful . oh and someone passed me.
Love this place. Had lots of fun in the bars.
Did you live there?
You have a way of making history so interesting. Thank you for the Austin update.
Another great adventure, Sarah Jane! That sure looks like Ann Margret ! She is gorgeous and so are you dear !
Yesssss!!!!....I thougth the same thing!
Austin is probably my favorite town in NV. My Grandparents lived in Winnemucca off the Grid on 40 acres for 40+ years and we always stopped in Austin on our way.
Always a good show Sarah Jane 👍😊👌. Very interesting. It's like I was there.
John Taffer would have a fun time rescuing those bars!
Austin, Nevada looks purty cool from Stokes Castle. The second house you showed looks inhabitable.
Wonderhussy, the old gas truck is a wwll GMC, CCKW deuce and a half. Someone removed the troop transport body and replaced it with a tank. Nice find.
I thought it was an old Dodge Power Wagon at 1st, but wasn't sure. Thanx for info.
Post WWII whole lots of surplus trucks were sold , particularly Duces . They were commonly seen repurposed for industrial , mining , construction , etc . A lot of them with specialized rigging ( well drilling , welding rigs, etc ) that didn't see constant highway miles were commonly seen up thru the 1970's .
I just watched one of the old episodes of Death Valley Days and they had the true story of Emma Nevada - it was very good and lots of history - and when you said you were going to Austin Nevada I had to see the place - good video
wow! thank you Sarah for this amazing video,i love old towns im definately going there next year for vacation, cant wait to revisit all the places you explored, btw i wanted to tell you you remind me so much of Shania Twain in the looks department and you also have a nice singing voice, thanks again you are such a doll, stay safe and blessed dear!
That thing you saw at that old house was an antique table saw... I paused the video to look at it man that thing is dangerous look at how small the base is that thing could easily fall over if not bolted to the floor
Ok. Im older than the saw. Your right. Its scary. It looks like an early 60’s Delta with the gold tone finish. It was a bench top saw of the day. Today they are called contractors saws. The pedestal base looks like the base from a 1940-50’s vintage coffee shop table support. Somebody put that together.
No it's a sad town in some ways, but if are caught in a winter storm or big thunderstorm, you'll be glad for the motels. Long way between there and Eureka.
Debbie, you know too much. SHHHH :-)
It's 70 miles, that's not far......
That wood bar could be salvaged, you cant buy that kind of workmanship anymore, even if you could it would cost a fortune!
23:00 WOW!! WHAT A VIEW...AND THOSE NATURAL CLOUDS AND NO CHEMTRAILS = AWESOME!!
Hello wonderhussy. Your friend Ted from Texas here. This is a super cool video I love the fact that you went to Old historic towns such as this. We have lots of towns like this and Texas as well. And traveling through them and seeing the old stuff is outrageously cool. Keeping this videos like this and I will keep watching. Love the show the scenery is gorgeous. Remember you have a friend in Texas.
Thank you for taking us along for this fun journey! Hope you have another great adventure soon!🧧🤙🌺
What a cool little town!! Thanks Wonder
did you know that they filmed a little bit of the TV show emergency out there well just half of an episode of the TV show emergency they went to that little medical center there and anyway the plot of the show was that Johnny and Roy were coming back from a fishing trip they happened upon a car wreck and take them to the local medical center the medical center doctor was inadequate so Johnny and Roy had to take care of the patient from there on the phone with Doctor bracket which would have been back at the hospital in rampart California
One of my favorite shows!!
Great info Michael
Awesome I remember the show, I will need to go back and watch it again. I love the old cars in the show.
Does anyone know the titles of that episode? To search for...
You guys are just adorable! Thanks for this wonderful informative FAR OUT tour of Austin, NV. Sarah Jane Wonderhussy you are amazing.
Let's have a picnic at the castle bench,,,,,, stands clapping ,,,, greatness
I have always seen this on the maps and wanted to go here!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚
I feel like I've been there 2 now. Btw. I think Hubert's in love. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍
I think that's a real picture of Ann-Margret, it's been a while I may be wrong 🤔😎
@Chewy Ltd Actually reminds me a little of Linda McCartney.
I thought it was Ann Margaret as well.
Stopped in for a beer on my Harley 35, 40 years ago as I remember it's the wife of the owner at that time. I might be wrong but the bartender was a dead ringer of the gal in the picture and she said it was her.
That old tanker truck probably delivered heating oil to all the homes and businesses.
Why? Millions of people still heat with oil.... There are trucks like that all over Nevada.
Well it came out of the ground didn't it?
Custis Long it gets worse. In my youth trucks like that sprayed used oil on the gravel roads to keep the dust down. Few roads in the rural west were paved. Oiling the road was side income for the garage and was how they disposed of old motor oil. This all went on before there even was an EPA. Times change.
Absolutely beautiful, great work. Thank you for sharing these beautiful historic buildings with us
WONDER BABY. SWAMP HUGS FROM LOUISIANA
From rough and stuff of past to polished professional. Way to record Wonderful Hussey
I drove highway 50 in 1992 in my 18 wheeler, it truly is the loneliest highway in America. Almost ran over a drunk women who had a fight with her old man. It was 20 degrees and by law I had to give her a ride to where she would be safe. I took her to a town about 80 miles away, that's how far I had to take her where she wouldn't freeze to death. I barely ever saw another car.
We are buying the building next to the library. And opening a bar. We are NOT ready to open yet, there are logistical issues for people to come out to do construction, everything is 3x as expensive than we budgeted for so it's been challenging. We would be glad to have you out again when we are ready. 😊
Were you able to get the bar up and running?
I drove highway 50 from Lake Tahoe , and i remember Austin well, and it,s a desolate Highway all right. That was back in 1972, i also drove it again in the 90s I also remember indian ruins some where out there. Thanks for the memories, i'm planing on some desert road trips with my women soon.
Fun video as always.
I drove through there a few years ago. Great location.
I being a telephone guy love to watch your video's in towns like these and look for the telephone cables up on the poles. Some of these small towns actually have fiber. (Randsberg)
Now I've been to Austin, Nevada ... thanks for the hosted look-around - enjoyed!
MY Dad was a Mason in Victoria, Australia!
I love this episode. I usually turned back to Reno or Tahoe at Fallon but I've decided to move on to Austin next time for sure. Thank you.
I remember watching that early video. It was rough, but I stuck with you to see you become the professional entertainer and educator that you are today. 😂
I would love to have a few beers at those bars in the evening!
Love your videos. Fun and an escape from my reality.
The cemetery is north of town on Hwy-305 towards Battle Mountain. It is the most amazing cemetery I have ever seen and definitely worth a visit. Silver must of paid for a lot of monumental headstones and cast and wrought iron. I'm a back roads traveler and I don't consider Hwy-50 that lonely. Oregon has two of the loneliest roads I have ever been on. Hwy-205 out of Burns to Denio, and Hwy-31 out of Lapine to Lakeview and then on to Hwy-140 to Denio, Nevada. Hwy-205 literally runs out of pavement for a few miles and looks like a cow trail and you begin to question the accuracy and reliability of your GPS and at night you are in one of the darkest places on the planet the combination which scared the my traveling partner into a panic mode. The real treat on that road was the Milky Way. It was unforgettable.
I would love that town. I'd buy that second house next to the red one.
I,ve traveled THE LONELIEST HIWAY IN AMERICA back in1994 in A 1967 VW BUS,EAST BOUND TO WHEELER CAVES ( WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP ) EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
Thanks for the tour WH!
Wuz there in the early 70's. More lively back then. That Austin Garage held the generator which provided power to the town. Graveyard is at the bottom of the hill at the intersectioon of the road to Battle Mt before getting into town, dump was across the road.
Each week I look forward to your adventure vlogs, your wit, and your humor. Thank you for putting this together.
picture in the bar looks alot like you smile
live laugh and love thank you for the videos
Love that little town. The area in general. Love the hussy as well! Great videos..
I'm really surprised that many of those properties are unoccupied. I guess that most people don't know that such places can be bought at tax auctions for just a few hundred dollars. That's because the places were just abandoned, and no one paid the property taxes on them. I bought my half-city block sized place in Elko County several years ago for 20 years' back taxes. The amount I paid? How does $300 sound? So, anyone looking for a quiet place to settle, or for a "vacation" spot, might think about that option.
That's intriguing.
Title of video--"Austin City Limits"
The Odd Fellows and the Freemasons are two seperate organizations. But there are times and places, especially in small towns, they will share a building. You won't see anything there unless you can see the second floor. That's where the Lodge room is. The object at the cabin that you didn't know what it was is an old table saw. Good explore.
I helped them move that bar from England that was my cousin.
I have the "I survived Highway 50" shirt AND official document sent to me from Carson City. The check points start in Baker, NV and end in Fallon, NV. Along with the Document they sent me a very cool lapel pin. It was in deed the loneliest road I have ever traveled. There were places where there wasn't any one else on the road. I recommend that trek to those that love driving.
edvisme where in Baker do you check in?
@@princessunicorn669 There was only one place. I remember it was a restaurant/gift shop type place. It was next to a rest area. The places that will mark the booklet usually have a sign posted. Good luck.
edvisme ok thank you 😊
In the 1950's kids would collect bottles along roadsides, three cents per bottle added up when a large root beer was twenty cents. Remote then well traveled roads were treasure laden with pickup truck volunteers and youth group runners, it financed tents and camping gear for some church sponsored groups. Neighbors would save their bottles to be collected.
Wow wow wow good video good choice Larry burger and strawberry milkshakes
Dont forget to mention that a chase scene in the original Vanishing Point was filmed in Austin! Loved that movie. Still watch it atleast once a month.
I must say I've been watching your videos for a little while now I lived in Vegas for a couple of years in downtown Las Vegas wasn't too impressed about that but I must admit I am in falling in love with Vegas Nevada should say all over again by watching it through your eyes thank you so much wonderhussy for bringing back the enchantment of Nevada keep up the good work and I enjoy watching you and all Hot Springs I did not know existed you're a delight to watch as you take us through all these little mining towns and all the little things around Nevada
I have lived in Las Vegas as an adult since 1968... it is the least interesting place in the State! everything out of Clark County has more history and things to see... tons of camping, hiking and old mining sites.
You know, we just finished a big trip through Colorado and I'd take some of these deserted places in your videos any day! Colorado is really crowded in the summer
I specifically drove up there from San Diego just to drive ‘the loneliest road in America’. Drove into and right through LV without blinking an eye on the 15 and picked up the 93 N to the little old silver mining town of Pioche and spent the night at famous Overland Hotel & Saloon and toured the old Masonic cemetery late at night cause I had to get up early and hit the road. While walking around amongst the tombstones in the pitch black I stopped for a moment to take a toke. I’m wearing all dark clothing with a hoodie pulled up so just as I fired up my lighter and brought it up to my face a car just happened to be driving by and must of seen me cause that car peeled out down the road fast as a jackrabbit!Funniest damn thing I’ve ever seen. So the next morning I drove into Ely for a minute and kept moving on. I only had 300 or so miles to cover for that day so I had to get a move on. And as you know, there’s really only two towns between Ely and Fallon and that’s Eureka and Austin. So I remember getting out and looking around Austin for a minute and found it to be a charming little town. That drive along the 50 was another sublime drive in Nevada where you won’t get fenced in
Damn you sure do find the gems left in the desert. I am happy to ride along with a fellow IBM’r, Beamers as we are known in some circles.
Great video Sarah. You do an excellent job. 😊
Places like that old service station amaze me. Do people not pack up and move??? Crazy to me to see all the things just left behind like they were literally told to get the heck out NOW! I'm sure there is a story to all the places like these..... Thanks for another cool video Sarah!
Great video, I appreciate you filming these videos. Hope in future I can see these areas myself.
Hey Miss Sarah, have you hit Jerome and Crown King Arizona? Great places with a great history. Crown King use to be a party town back in the day. That is when across the street from the Crown King bar was a bar called The Shaft. It burnt down twice and did not rebuild after the second time. In the first bar they had a skin on the wall and if you could guess what kind of skin it was you got a free beer. Not to many got it. With the state Australia is in today the skin was a Kangaroo skin. So sad. Love your videos and how you intermingle history with where you go. Awesome lady, take care.
Jerome is very intriguing as it slides down a mountain side. You must go there... Just South of Flagstaff...
Places like that fascinate me. Just think of the generations who lived their whole lives in these cocoons. Thank You Sarah.
Was curious to see the town gas station :)
Love that little cabin on the hill! Great view.
THAT FAMOUS PAINTING IN THAT SERBIAN BAR, IS THAT THE WONDERHUSSY ON THAT SOFA!💖
Wow, what cool old houses, you should buy them. 🤔 What a cool old town. Tell Larry "Do tell" from Old Kenny. 😅😅😅😅.
Best Hussy 2020!
I drove through Austin in early July. Just east of town, in the hills, I came across one of the weirdest things I have ever seen. It was a mass migration of Mormon crickets! They were in the millions I'm sure. The road meanders a lot going up the hills so there were a half dozen places where they had turned the road into a slippery mess as they crossed. I finally managed to find a place to pull over and get some photos and found the brush along the road to be sheltering them in huge numbers as they marched along. Maybe they were off to meet some seagulls in Utah!
always love going on adventures with you Sarah !
Those weights are allow the cable to be spooled back on the drum, without anything on the hook, nice and tight. Instead of loose and all jammed up.
The lady in the bar with the big ones was my mom. Sadly I was a bottle baby
I really enjoyed this adventure. Thanks.
You, Larry and John seem like a fun bunch to hang-out with. Always exploring. Keep having fun.
Doing the old pony express route is a great idea, though the whole route might take a lot of time and travel. Still, it's historically significant, especially in the context of competing railroads and shipping routes. I managed to do the length of the Colorado from the Golfo all the up to the headwaters. Long as a lady has the inclination, there's lotsa rivers to follow. ruclips.net/video/tSXxEg_u2xI/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/KYvEmaQTzok/видео.html
(These are offered in return for the delight you give us, your "follow"ers.)
Great idea this is where Sara would come into her own, she's an incredible story teller and the story of the pony express through her eyes would be hoof shattering!!!
Bar painting looks a lot like a certain naked model that explores the desert SW, making fantastic videos of her adventures
I was in Austin years back when the Mormon Crickets were out. Millions of them all over the road and the sidehills. MY memory of Austin. Deasd squished, slippery crickets on the roads.
Always makes me happy to receive news you’ve posted a new video! Folks, if you are not subscribed take a moment to do so, it’s a great channel that showcases a lot of cool and desolate places.
Wow, I would love to see a video about the pony express route through Nevada. I have been interested in driving it for two years. I had the opportunity to ask Larry what he knew about it and the Lincoln Highway but he said he had never been on either.
Nicely done! I haven't been through Austin for something like 10 years. We stayed in the same motel, guess it's gotten a lot better since we stayed there. We had some drinks in the bar right down the street, it might have been the Owl Bar. "Crazy Sue" was the bartender... I still remember her and her "Texas Fly Swatter". We were surprised to see Sue when we had breakfast at the Toiyabe Cafe the next morning and she was our waitress! That's one hard partying, hard working gal!
Great video - one of the filming locations for the movie Vanishing Point ‘71.
Love these tours. Great Job....Thanks for doing this
Have been through Austin several times over the years. Stayed at the Pony Cyn Motel once. It was cozy too. Didn’t survive Hwy 50 my first time. Threw a rod in my Toyota van 40 miles west of Ely and had to have it towed to Salt Lake City for repair.
You found neat Bar Backs. Look at that Wood Work, that is Art Work. And I ate lunch at a place the cook and waitress one the same we had lovely conversation . The University has the News papers from the day.
I will have to check this place out. I really love your videos been watching since....maybe about when you started making youtube stuff and I just have really loved the journey. If you ever decide to explore around in Arizona give us a heads up I and I am sure many other viewers from here in AZ can tell you where to find some pretty neat stuff here as well but man it looks like Nevada is a goldmine for such places.I need to start visiting your state!
I want that painting. 😍😚
❤️ Love your vids Hussy.
You are an entertaining and educational diversion..
