    "The property is owned by Mrs. B. Cislini of Ione and the estates of S. Lompa and J.M. Doonan. Discovered in 1907, the deposit was purchased by the Nevada Cinnabar Company of Salt Lake City in 1912 and produced 3, 462 flasks of mercury, from 1914 to 1918 in a 50 ton Scott furnace erected by the company. The mine has been idle since then, except for a period of high mercury market during World War II when lessees treated hand-sorted ore in a 2 pipe retort. Total production has been about 4,200 flasks of mercury. It is reported that some processing equipment and several buildings remain on the property."
    - University of Nevada Bulletin - Geology and Mining Series No. 50 - Mineral Resources of Nye County, Nevada - Victor E. Kral, Mining Engineer January 1951

      So you are probably asking what is a "flask of mercury". Is it anything like a flask of Bourbon? A flask of mercury is approximately 2.7 quarts (2.5471 liters for those of you outside of the U. S. A.) or 76 pounds (34.473 kg).

  • @wendylaca1783
    @wendylaca1783 5 лет назад +25

    The smoke stack was a part of the mercury retort. They would roast the cinnabar in the retort the mercury vapors would then condense into mercury flask. If I remember I thing the flasks weight 79 pounds.

    The comic strip was a Katzenjammer Kidz cartoon strip. That was a very funny bunch of characters to read about, especially the shenanigans of the two young boys who were always pulling outrageous pranks on the old sea Kaptain.

  • @aicsusa

    Looks like there was a women cooking the food (chef) and servicing the miners (hooker), to keep them entertained at the mining site, so they would not leave. While she was in one room taking care of business with one miner, she had the next miner waiting in the other room at night. These ladies of the night must have made big bucks out there! They probably had women lined up to take over when one got burned out in the rotation. She always had a builtin clientele! Easy money back then. :-) We have had a mine in the tri-state area for many years and know the history of how they kept the miners at the sites, so they would not leave on payday and go into town, get drunk and find a woman, then not return for a few days, which would mess up the production schedules. That is what really went on back then out there! The women would rotate to different locations to keep it exciting! :-) WOOHOO! The real wild west! LOL!

    • @Malibu_Dawn
      @Malibu_Dawn 5 лет назад

      Those "ladies" were sex slaves. No doubt they died there. F*cked to death. Think about it.

    • @aicsusa
      @aicsusa 5 лет назад +2

      Dawn Robinson LOL they were not the slave there for sure. There were all women doing this and no one was ever forced or held anywhere. Learn your history. Whore houses and hookers existed back then. They refer to it as the oldest profession.

    • @aicsusa
      @aicsusa 5 лет назад +2

      Gary For sure! If they did not provide the entertainment on site the miners would get paid,leave the site, go to town, get drunk, get laid and disappear for days which would then screw up the production schedules at the mines. This way the miners were always on site.

      @@aicsusa Thank you for suggesting I do my history. It is perfectly conceivable that a woman alone with men has power. Why didn't I think of it before? I took your advice, did some digging and discovered that the men paid her all of the money. There was no need for rape, heavens no! No pregnancy, no UTI, no problems with the "back door" because back then a man respected a woman, knew no meant no. Sure, it took a couple of burrows to haul out the money she made, but if one was lame, the men would all pitch in and help her haul it to the bank. Wow, looking into history sure opened my eyes! Thanks for the fantastic advice!

    With lightning that close, you all apparently don't know qiute how dangerous your sistuation was as you two took your time about getting back to your vehicles. The safest thing to have done would to have immediately begun walking back to your vehicles after the first strike. Don't linger outdoors while that thunderstorm charges up again for the next big spark Being inside your vehicles is one of the safest places to be in a thunderstorm because they are a Faraday Cage around you. They conduct electricity safely through the frame around you and to the ground without harming you. Waste no time getting back to safety. Especially stay away from those outdoor metal objects such as those old abandoned vehicles or metal fences. When it's close enough to hear as was in the video, it's close enough to strike you. You were closer to that lightning than the top of that thunderstorm was above the ground. They're like a giant Tesla Coil. Here's a spectacular video that demonstrates the safety of being inside a vehicle ruclips.net/video/ve6XGKZxYxA/видео.html Being outside a vehicle is no place to be as some of the current can also go through you to the ground as this video graphically shows. ruclips.net/video/JSUMT8lFik8/видео.html

    4:46 LOL, I'm pretty sure that is a food serving cart. 9:04 Kurtzmann & Company operated under that name from 1901 to 1935. So the newspapers are from that time period. Probably closer to 1935 then 1901. It's not really surprising the LA Times was there. Keep in mind that Las Vegas was just a very small relatively unimportant town until the 1950s. So the nearest major cities were LA and San Francisco. They probably got the LA Times mailed there. So the miners could get the news.
