  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #275
    Exploring a Ginormous Abandoned Mine
My friend Larry and I descend into the bowels of the earth to explore every level of the War Eagle Mine...right down to the very bottom! Over its years of operation, this mine produced lead, copper, zinc and gold...but is now defunct. And there is a ton of stuff left behind -- from old mine carts to dynamite sticks, drill bits, work gloves and wooden chests. It's easy to spend HOURS exploring the miles of tunnels in this mine -- but if your flashlight dies, you're doomed!!
Speaking of flashlights...here's the link to the amazing Olight I used in the video: goo.gl/5Ci4nz
    It's kinda pricey...but it's NO JOKE!

Just a little tidbit of info here. That small, heavy, silver-colored chunk you held is Galena, a mix of Silver and Lead ore. It's too expensive to bother with processing on a small scale, but on a large-scale operation, it's quite profitable. The rusty-looking rocks on the same table are Limonite, which, more often than not, carry fine, but chemically pure Gold. There's still lots of money to be brought out of that mine for someone willing to work for it. :-) :-)

Yeah, because I watched another RUclips video about mining I recognized right away what that chunk of rock was that she was inquiring about. Had I not seen that video, I wouldn’t of known what the heck she was talking about. So that was pretty cool. Plus it only makes sense that you’d run across a bunch of Galena in the Siver State, you know what I mean?

Sarah, your knowledge of mines and terminology is much improved. Kudos for the hard hat and multiple batteries and flashlights. Also it is good that Larry went with you, a buddy system is a must when caving or old mine exploration. There are a couple of mine exploration youtubers that do very well and they are both named Frank - it is popular. There are three things that I would like to mention; one, if you are going to do mines get an oxygen warning device - the air can turn bad without you noticing, two watch out for false floors which are plywood "bridges" over chasms that get covered with dirt - hard to spot, watch out if the ground gets "springy". Three, stick to hard rock mines. I remember you exploring a talc mine - very dangerous, prone to collapse and very dusty with perhaps some asbestos in the air. Hey I learned all of this from Frank at "Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places" which at this time has a comment just below mine - Frank is a 4 real expert. Hiya Frank!

9:55 The electrical box is from 1964. So it must have still been in operation in the 1960s. 23:20 The mine cart is from the 1930s, or maybe 40s. C.S. Card Iron Works Co. was operational from 1892 until sometime in the 1940s. The headquarters was at the current location of Denver's Mile High Stadium, where the Broncos play.

Now that was fun,, just to imagine the the workout you would get shoring up all that timber,, amazing amount of work.....looks like a good light ,,maybe figure a wrap with para-cord or something so if you dropped it ,,it would not fall into the bowels of the earth, leaving you in the dark...would be a good idea to let authorities know of the dynamite sticks found,,they are usually unstable,, and sooner or later someone will mess with them (once).....but if they detonate would probably close the mine....I tell you, your curiosity has me on the edge of my chair sometimes....

Yes, it is dark times 9 down there(8-). An old timer once told me that little donkeys were stabled in mines in decades long past. And if any were to be brought up for any reason, they
had to be brought up at night...so they could go through the gradual process of twilight, dawn, sunrise and all. Bringing them up in full daylight was far to rough on their eyes.
Yeah, keep yer self shifted down in the lower gears goin' either way on that grade, Darlin'. Ya don't wanna burn out yer brakes(8-). As for partying down in there...long as ya don't
drive the lizard people nuts...or if ya could get 'em to come party with ya...provide lotsa fruit and veggie drinks for 'em. Thanks to both of you for sharing the tour and for keeping
an eye on each other The smartest thing you could have done was just what ya done did(8-)...both "film" yer own version with co-mingling(8-). Loved both videos (Eminence Frontx5
