This is an awesome review. I’m going this weekend to buy a new Reel. My dad gave me a vanford C3000. I love that real and it was the last thing my dad gave me before he passed away but sadly it fell off my vehicle this past weekend and got lost 😢 so I think I’m gonna go back with that type but I’m also going to pick up an extra so, that’s awesome. Thank you very much.

Solid comparison bro, good real-life usage info. I know this review is a little old but you need to check the weights that you're talking about on these reels. With the exception of the Vanford, all three of the others are between 7.4 and 7.9 ounces. Hey Christian, thanks for the great review, especially as I'm right now trying to decide between the Sustain and the Twinpower. Here in Australia the price differential between them is even more than the US.
I've owned a couple Sustain reels over the years and especially in recent years I have found they are not so special, feature and operational-wise for the extra money over the basic Stratic, as it has developed over time.. I now have several Exsence reels and have fallen hard for Daiwa Certate reels (despite always having been a true blue Shimano fan)! My last "want" is to get one of the Shimano Twin Power FD's, probably in the 3000 size, although am considering the 2500 also due to the extra power I hope to feel (at the expense of a little speed) to use on a MH spinning rod with 15 or 20# braid for some heavier applications like big worms, etc. when hunting for some bigger bass.
I'm with you on the Daiwa Certates Bruce, I've got several of the 1000 size (1003) and the larger (2 to 2.5) size Certates which are as smooth as butter and I use them for my trout fishing. I match them to a Daiwa Black Label rod, between 6' and 7' around 2 to 4 lbs and I can cast really well especially with Daiwa extra thin 12 strand braid. @@bruceraiken2806
Between the 3000 & 4000, what would be the better size for do all lakes, rivers, Inshore/intercostal waterways. For freshwater, Crappy to small/large mouth bass and trout. For Brackish/salt water perch and shad to puppy drum.
I live in Minnesota and I have the 2500 in both last summer caught 2 large mouth 7 pound bass on my Vanford and multiple northern pike on both that were over 10 pounds with ease on a St. Croix trout rod 10- 12 pounds with 6 pound test line. The reel and rod were more than strong enough and made for a fun fight.
I know it's been awhile but I wanted to ask. Every youtuber with a camera and an opinion mentions bearings and how more bearings is better. Where are these bearings? Nobody ever mentions why each bearing is where it is and what it does. There are Shimano reels that are $200 with only 4 bearings. There are sometimes 2 tiny bearings in the handle knob itself. Some new Chinese reels offer 13+1 bearings. I replaced the plastic bushings in my handle's knob with bearings and now my knob spins infinitely smoother. If I replace every bushing in a reel with bearings will it be an Ultimo-Reel9000? My point is that none of you youtubers ever mention the bearing location and how it makes things smoother.
I got into fishing very recently. For now im fishing for pike and zander mostly, sometimes to mix it up a little i try getting some bass and trout. I tried about every reel from every brand under the sun in the fishing store and got stuck on the Shimano Stradic FM 4000. That felt like the reel i got the most for my money. From that reel up the prices increase steeply with very little, sometimes nothing in performance increase.
I do agree, it’s very little differences once you hit the $200-$300 price range. Stradic is a great reel. I am thinking about buying a bunch of them to throw on my saltwater gear
Great video dude. Few small things a little off but it's not a deal breaker like some of the comments are trying to make it out to be. But few things from my experiences from the saltwater side of things. I have all 4 of these as well. Plus the twin XD and Stella FJ For structure fishing ( mangroves , docks ) stradic or twin power FD hands down due to the core frames and spools. The vanford and sustain have the mgl rotors they will flex under tighter drag settings / heavier loads Open water the vanford and sustain I personally think Shimano shot themselves in the foot with the sustain. This reel to me makes an angler no longer have to go past this reel. Unless have the money and wanna spoil yourself 😂 Stradic I have actually chased snook under docks to the point where I have swam for them. Dunked the reel multiple times. Washed off with freshwater and still smooth as butter Oh btw the twin power FD has felt drag washers which I absolutely hate
Great, question. Definitely make sure you are going to keep using them consistently before upgrading reels. Once you know you are into fishing and going to stay into it, I would start upgrading. I went through multiple cheaper reels a year when I first started heavily fishing and I got tired of going through lots of reels, I started upgrading. Wish I would've spent my money on better reels from the beginning though.
Which reel do you think is more durable and long-lived? Choice between sustain and twin power. I need a trout reel, I fish in hard conditions. Thanks for answer✌️
@@CrankinWithChristian ok thanks. One more question - choice between tp and vanquish? Reel for bushy and muddy creecks, rod is stc ps76mlf2. Vanquish is probably smoother but…still durable?
@@steril5717 I just picked up a 2019 vanquish a few months back but haven’t gotten the chance to use it yet. It is super light and is smooth, but I’d probably still go for the twin power over it just because of using my twin power a lot so far and having trust in it.
I have the new Expride 7'2 ML and I have it paird with the new tatula MQ 2500 but been thinking if i should sell it and get the stradict or the vanford but now I dont know which one to get
I have the stradik fl and vanford and they are amazing I can’t understand how it gets any better I’m sure they have their benefits but if they are gonna do the same thing and even get beat up I’ll stick with the stradik and vanford
Dude knows his shit. Great review. Just got a sustain 5000. Using it for river/lake stripers. I Throw mostly Swimbaits big redfins and plastics like 7 and 10 inch fin S. someone just caught a 60 lb striper near me, hoping to get in on that action. Amazing feel on the sustain.
If i got this right , this 220 euro vanford is almost better than the twice that price twin power xd ! (The reel on the video is twin power FD ,but it remains a mystery then why twin power XD costs twice this vanford ...)Could you explain a bit plz if im wrong on this
@@ChrisGousias no, the twin power is much better than the vanford. I had issues with the vanford and sold all mine. Vanford is worst on my list out of these reels.
@@CrankinWithChristian Ur so wrong though... the vanford has like 95% of the same internals the twinpower has.. Its clearly the best thing shimano makes.. sustain is just 1 mayor different part to a vanford and a couple of non important bearings.. and they ask 100 dollars more for it now thats a cashgrab.. The best deal is clearly the stradic.. shimano also sells about 100 times more stradics then they do twinpowers.. vanford is the light stradic.. cost 50 bucks more.. if u need it to balance a rod.. (i love my 4000 vanford on a heavy 7 foot rod).
The 2020 and 2021 sustain definitely were a waste. The new sustain fj probably is one of the better shimanos for the price. I really enjoy my twin power too. As for the vanford, I have had a ton of issues with it and have multiple buddies having issues with there’s too.
@@CrankinWithChristian you can buy the twinpower fd on ebay for the same price as the sustain fj. Id rather own the twin power. I havent had any issues with the vanford, i dont catch anything crazy big probabbly 5lb bass. If you want to catch bass over 5lb i would rather have an aluminum rotor like the twin power for extra cranking strength.
I use a twin power sw 10000pg for off shore jigigng. That beast weighs around 24oz. When i see freshwater guys nitpick about this or that 3000 or 4000 sized reel being 1 or 2 oz heavier or lighter, i just roll my eyes..lol. just picked up a stradic fl 4000 on sale for 160 bucke for fall lake Michigan salmon.
twin power is the most expensive range? kkkkk thank god Stella wasnt in your line up hahaha obs: LOVE the Twin Power FE.. just got a second one!!! I have a 5000XG and a 2500. 🥰 IN LOVE with them
To me after using the stradics, the nascis just feel like they’re made fairly cheap and they have some play in the actual reel. When you use the stradic or higher, the reels are very well built with a lot higher end parts and less play in the reel too. All personal preference. Nasci is a great reel for the price though!
@@CrankinWithChristian I need to upgrade this year, just not sure to what level I want to upgrade 😁 The Nasci is on my list, but perhaps I need to rethink it…. 🤔
So I had a 7’2” ML expride B and had my twin power xd on it and it balanced very well. Personally, I’d get a shimano vanquish for an expride B if you can spend the money though
I the 3 lower reels and the exact rod. Vanford is too light to balance the Expride. I run the sustain because it’s smoother, but the Stradic balances the best. The rod isn’t super lightweight as higher end rods. Edit: I can’t speak for the Twin Power but it might balance the Expride since it’s slightly heavier than the sustain, but less than the Twin Power.

@@CrankinWithChristian how did you resolve that issue? I'm thinking of wiping the drag washers and using my penn grease on them. If that doesn't work then I'll try using mono line. Never had this issue before.
@@MrTomekat I run braid to leader on all my spinning reels. I haven’t messed with my vanford to fix it because honestly I don’t care for it compared to the Stradics, sustains? Twin powers, etc. I would check to make sure you don’t have much grease on the brakes though
hi buddy , great vid , i got a question , what would you pick between a new tp fd 2500 or an old stella 2500 fe (jdm 2010 model) in good shape? I'm in a bit of struggle picking one , the price is the same around 300 euros :) , ty in advance
Honeslty, I’d probably go with the twin power xd. To me, that newest technology in the reel will make a huge difference ! Also check out the twin power xd too. I have fell in love with that reel more than any of the 4 mentioned in this video.
@@CrankinWithChristian I also like everything about the xd version , except the 6:0:1 gear ratio, i wanna use it for zander fishing and i prefer a smaller line retreat , that's why i asked about fd, otherways i would picked the xd without looking back :).Sorry if my english is not on point :) and ty for your answer.
So, what’s wrong with an exceler? Does it catch fish any less frequently or snootily? Does it weigh more than one of these? Oh, and I can buy more than 2 of these for the same cost as one of these shamino’s. Btw, feel free to drive over your reel… even if it doesn’t break, if it doesn’t make you cry, then you must have more dollars than sense. Bottom line, excellent equipment does not make you a better fisherman.
yes the exceler is not so smooth.. also weighs a lot more.. also doesnt last as long.. but hey its also not bad.. For me the stradics and vanford make more sense.. they are about 150-200 dollars.. (vanford is lighter so cost a bit more). I wouldnt pay 300+ for a sustain though.. internally it isnt much different to a vanford. The price diff is too much compared to the parts different.. its even worse for the more expensive models.
I beleive the Vanford and Stradic have the same line retrieval... you said the vanford is 3" less. The 4000 stradic and vanford both pull 40" and the 3k's both pull 37"
Nice vid. Just a tip: turning the handle and let it lose is not recommended by my colleagues from service and warranty. A lot of costumers try that but it doesn't bring anything-except that its not good for your reels. Important is how it turns WHEN holding the knob. Keep it up!
@@CrankinWithChristian The reason I’m asking? I bought the 4000 mad 5000 here in the states $229, $239. But I saw another post where the 5000XG is currently $172. Wow! Just thought they may be different qualities.
@@Unplugged704 yep if you order almost any shimano reel through the jdm market you can get them significantly cheaper since shimano is a Japanese brand. Bro please read Shimano catalog first before mention about all your reel technology. there's no Ci4+(carbon fiber metarial) gear and TP don't have any Ci4+ in it.
@@CrankinWithChristian TP FD is in coresolid Shimano reel spinning lineup, so it's will not have poses any Ci4+ tech. But TP XD are the one who poses Ci4+(magnum light rotors and side plate body) and he actually in the line of MGL. So I think maybe you get confused with both of them and last but not least Shimano don't have any Ci4+ gear, they only have hagane gear.
I use the cheapest spincaster available. I use KastKing, Piscifun and Abu Garcia reels for $50.00! And guess what? I catch bass. Moral of this story is, it's the fisherman and bait you use that catches fish, not the equipment...
You can definitely catch fish on any gear, but with as much as I fish, cheaper gear does not hold up nearly as well. I could barely get 1 season out of some of the cheaper equipment, where I have some higher end reels which have lasted me multiple years and still are like new. What size do you use it said 1000 an 2500 uses felt washers which are know to go bad I replaced mine with carbontex drag washers they run smoother an last much longer.
I wouldn't. I had the 3k ballistic lt. They can't handle saltwater fish ( i.e. reds , jacks , snook. ) Frame flexs so bad. Plus daiwas customer service , warranty and turn around times are horrible. I had them replace both reels 3 times. So 4 different reels and they all flexed. They may be great for freshwater but saltwater 💩 plus their company 💩
Against the sustain? It would lose in every category. Drag, weight , looks ,smoothness, balance , way cheaper reel. One reel left out of the comparison is the saragosa. Its one model below the sustain,I think that one is even better than the twin power, tho twin power is 2 models above.

Stradic I have actually chased snook under docks to the point where I have swam for them. Dunked the reel multiple times. Washed off with freshwater and still smooth as butter
Oh btw the twin power FD has felt drag washers which I absolutely hate
I'm a new to fishing. I've been watching tons of videos on various equipment. When and why would I think about stepping up to these reels?
Thanks
Great, question. Definitely make sure you are going to keep using them consistently before upgrading reels. Once you know you are into fishing and going to stay into it, I would start upgrading. I went through multiple cheaper reels a year when I first started heavily fishing and I got tired of going through lots of reels, I started upgrading. Wish I would've spent my money on better reels from the beginning though.
Which reel do you think is more durable and long-lived? Choice between sustain and twin power. I need a trout reel, I fish in hard conditions. Thanks for answer✌️
I’d probably go with twin power fd out of those 2
@@CrankinWithChristian ok thanks.
My static’s are great. I picked up the new Tatula MQ and it’s amazing for $199. I honestly like the MQ the best of all my 2500’s
For smaller sized reels, I definitely like my shimano's best, but for bigger game reels, I love my Daiwa's
@@CrankinWithChristian do yourself a favor and put your hands in the new Diawa Tatual MQ 2500. I prefer it over my Stadic.
shimano best spinning reels for sure
Definitely my favorite
Thanks for making video I was looking for reel .i will go with sustain
Just bought the static fl 3000xg for 140$ from American legacy fishing. Used mint condition, gonna either get a curado or zodias to pair it
I like the Vanford.
I can’t understand why anyone pays $1000 for reels, Stella! 🤷♂️🤷♂️😂😂
WOWOWOWOW Awesome man!!! Lets see the video!
Very good review! Thank you.
Thanks!
My choice is Custom X 1000, 2000, 3000, best reels ever made
If i got this right , this 220 euro vanford is almost better than the twice that price twin power xd !
Sustain is a waste of money, twin power fd and vanford are the two best reels on the market for the price
I have two Stradic C5000XG for saltwater salmon fishing. Do not like the reel😢 A lot of issues, my old Fireblood 4000FA is better
Is shimano sustain sea work suitable?
twin power is the most expensive range? kkkkk thank god Stella wasnt in your line up hahaha obs: LOVE the Twin Power FE.. just got a second one!!! I have a 5000XG and a 2500. 🥰 IN LOVE with them
Only Twin Power is Made in Japan though
how do you feel about this Sustain FJ versus the Twin Power FD/XD?
I love all of them honestly. I don’t have that much experience of the twin power xd yet, but I’d say the sustain and twin power fd are very similar
Great video..…thanks for the intel. What was it about the Nasci that you didn’t like?
To me after using the stradics, the nascis just feel like they’re made fairly cheap and they have some play in the actual reel. When you use the stradic or higher, the reels are very well built with a lot higher end parts and less play in the reel too. All personal preference. Nasci is a great reel for the price though!
@@CrankinWithChristian I need to upgrade this year, just not sure to what level I want to upgrade 😁 The Nasci is on my list, but perhaps I need to rethink it…. 🤔
gonna buy sustain cos of you man. was thinking vanford before this video thank you great review.
Good choice. I’d definitely spend the little extra money to get the sustain over the vanford 👍🏻
@@CrankinWithChristianI would say TP over sustain because of metal body. Definitely more durable that plastic ci4 of sustain
Nice job thank you for your input very well said😊
Off hand which one of these would balance out great on an expride 7' M spinning rod? The B Series, i Found a good deal on one.
So I had a 7’2” ML expride B and had my twin power xd on it and it balanced very well. Personally, I’d get a shimano vanquish for an expride B if you can spend the money though
@@CrankinWithChristian those are a bit pricey unless I can find one used. I was really looking at the stradic or vanford. Thx for the quick reply
@@c.shoefish out of those 2 I will say get the vanford. I’m not a big fan of the vanford, but it balances really well on the expride B
@@structurebe1 I have the rod and it replaced my Abu Veritas TE rod and I have it paird with the new tatula MQ 2500 but been thinking if i should sell it and get the stradict or the vanford
I love my twin power FD
I would put Vanford above the sustain.... you must have a bad copy :)
I love my stradic FL. I got the 1k and 5k. I use it more than my Vanford
Did you have a problem with the drag? Seems like my drag be slipping and then when i tighten it, it too tight? Thoughts?
On which reel?
@@CrankinWithChristian sustain. When i am setting the hook a fish is when it happens. I'm thinking maybe too much grease on the washers or it doesn't like braid, lol
@@MrTomekat I didn’t have any issues with it slipping on the sustain. I did on the vanford though
Twin power is the first step into made in Japan IIRC
hi buddy , great vid , i got a question , what would you pick between a new tp fd 2500 or an old stella 2500 fe (jdm 2010 model) in good shape?
@@babanu65 you’re fine! In that case I’d go for the twin power fd then! It’s a super clean reel
The Stella hand down will lay the line down better and outcast the Twin Power again and again
Na bro 13 year old reel, be outperformed by a stradic these days
Budget King is the Ultegra!
How about ultegra 2021 ?
Definitely can look into it! Currently have a miravel on the way to review!
Where is the stella? Lol.. I woulda let you borrow it for the video
I do need a Stella lol 👀 one may be in the plans!
Love my Vanford
Love the Drag!
Great review thanks heaps 🎣👍
I beleive the Vanford and Stradic have the same line retrieval... you said the vanford is 3" less. The 4000 stradic and vanford both pull 40" and the 3k's both pull 37"
The HG vs the XG references the great ratio.
Let me know if you ever want to get rid of that vanford.
Nice vid. Just a tip: turning the handle and let it lose is not recommended by my colleagues from service and warranty. A lot of costumers try that but it doesn't bring anything-except that its not good for your reels. Important is how it turns WHEN holding the knob. Keep it up!
@TonnerMatt not with the force Customer do that to get Max turning time. Just don’t do it.
Question.
Is the Shimano Stradic’s JDM models better quality than the ones sent in USA?
I believe they are the same but I’m not 100% on that.
@@CrankinWithChristian
The reason I’m asking? I bought the 4000 mad 5000 here in the states $229, $239.
But I saw another post where the 5000XG is currently $172. Wow!
Just thought they may be different qualities.
@@Unplugged704 yep if you order almost any shimano reel through the jdm market you can get them significantly cheaper since shimano is a Japanese brand. For example, the twin powers are $400-$500 In the US market. I paid less than $300 each on the JDM market. Same reel, just made in Japan instead of Malaysia like the US models are
@@CrankinWithChristian Nice! Yeah I'm visiting Thailand in a couple weeks. May have to grab a couple 5000XG's. LOL
@@CrankinWithChristianwhat site did you buy from. The one I was looking at seems higher then that
The sustained spool looks significantly larger than the other three real
Looks shorter and fatter
Stella 😉 my 13 is better than these , maybe not the TP
I'd love to have seen the reels in use during the review, rather than sitting on their boxes.
Thoughts on the 2021 Ultegra vs stradic
I don’t really have much experience with the ultegra, but I’d spend the extra money and get a stradic for sure
Just bought the 2500 sustain 😊
Great reel. You’ll love it
@@CrankinWithChristian replacing my Daiwa theory that i had for 3 years which came from Japan. I loved that super light reel but unfortunately the zoian air rotor broke in an odd place.
@@MrTomekat if you like the light reels, also check out the shimano twin power xd. It’s in the magnum light series shimano has and is a super strong reel. I really love that reel. I got it after making this video
@@CrankinWithChristian when my 3000 series luvias decides to break, then i will probably look into a twinpower which I've always wanting. Thanks 👍
Good post
Bro please read Shimano catalog first before mention about all your reel technology. there's no Ci4+(carbon fiber metarial) gear and TP don't have any Ci4+ in it.
I did read the website doing research on the reels
@@CrankinWithChristian TP FD is in coresolid Shimano reel spinning lineup, so it's will not have poses any Ci4+ tech. But TP XD are the one who poses Ci4+(magnum light rotors and side plate body) and he actually in the line of MGL.
So I think maybe you get confused with both of them and last but not least Shimano don't have any Ci4+ gear, they only have hagane gear.
Once you use Stella and Exist! You will never look back!
I actually sold my Stella because I hated it and had issues with it 😬
this guy review fishing reel like most reviewers who had no idea of what he is talking about
Rrriiiiggghhhhtttttt
I use the cheapest spincaster available. I use KastKing, Piscifun and Abu Garcia reels for $50.00! And guess what? I catch bass. Moral of this story is, it's the fisherman and bait you use that catches fish, not the equipment...
You can definitely catch fish on any gear, but with as much as I fish, cheaper gear does not hold up nearly as well. I could barely get 1 season out of some of the cheaper equipment, where I have some higher end reels which have lasted me multiple years and still are like new. Everyone likes different stuff tho man! No need for everyone to go with higher dollar gear. Just that niche that some like 👍
@@CrankinWithChristian I hear you, great investment. However, I maintain my reels every winter, clean, oil and lube the gears. My Abu Garcia is still going strong after 4 years and the other two after 3 years...
@@paules0099 nothing wrong with that type of gear tho man. I got tons of buddies who have $50-$100 reels and they’ll out fish me sometimes 😂 I have no issues admitting that
Yeah but you get what you pay for. Read the reviews on these kamkoons and some of these other cheap Chinese reels. They are crap. Might work good for bluegills and small fresh water stuff, get into real fish and they will fail
@@stripervince1 So far, I've been lucky...

Rick kid😂😂
What? lol. What’s a “Rick kid”? Lol
that TP main shaft is rubbish for the price.....dont ask how "we" know.....go for TP XD 21.....
what happened with the TP main shaft? did it bend? heard about some problems with loud geary noises on the TP FD and not sure if it's worth it over the sustain
I think the Vanfords are garbage. I don’t understand how they get good reviews. I have bought 3 different Vanfords and sold them all due to sticky drags. Such a step back from the Ci4
Had zero problems with my Vanfords, got a 1000, 2500 & 2500HG. All seen a lot of use. Awesome, smooth, love them.
What size do you use it said 1000 an 2500 uses felt washers which are know to go bad I replaced mine with carbontex drag washers they run smoother an last much longer.
After a while my felt were slightly torn does not help I foul hook alot of carp in the shallows here some times 5 a day
I will still put my ballistic up against them any day 😎
I hated the slow line retrieval of the ballistic and sold it after a few trips..
Daiwa gears are trash compared to the cold forged shimano gears.
@@FLFlatsmaster not to mention daiwas shit frames flex
Against the sustain? It would lose in every category. Drag, weight , looks ,smoothness, balance , way cheaper reel. One reel left out of the comparison is the saragosa. Its one model below the sustain,I think that one is even better than the twin power, tho twin power is 2 models above.
@@stripervince1 I agree.
The only reel I would say that's legit better then the sustain is the twin power XD. Which is 2 shimanos above the sustain. But the price tag is also higher unless buying from Japan market which I did. Paid the same amount as I did my sustain in the states 😂.
But for the price here I DEFINITELY recommend the sustain over any other Shimano / reel for the price
But him trying to compare the ballistic lt to the sustain 🤦🏽♂️🤣🤣
