When Is It Better To Shoot Black & White?

- Some photos work better in black & white. But can a b&w conversion of an average shot lead to a piece of art?
which raises the question: when is it better to shoot black & white?

Great b & w thought process video. Thank you.
Hi Scott, thank you so much, my friend 😊
Nice greetings from the mountains,
Christian
Black and white photography draws the viewer into the photograph. Your explanations are great how you break down black and white photography! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Victor, yes, it is really like that: the viewer gets drawn to b&w images. There is simply a contrast between reality (outside of the frame) and the abstract image. And we get simply drawn to contrasts 😊
Thanks a lot for your kind words and nice greetings,
Christian
Love your teaching
Thank you so much, Michael! Means a lot 😊
Merry Christmas,
Christian
Christian
A very good episode and well explained my friend. I also think that black and white has a purpose and a place and in particular if you want to show even more texture in your subject.
Hi Darren, Thank you so much, buddy 😊 Yes, absolutely, b&w is a good way to emphasize texture. But I also like specially the difference in the mood, a good b&w image can convey. It's so fantastic which amazing possibilities photography offers us, isn't it?
Have a great weekend,
Christian
Ein sehr interessantes Video, super gelungen!👍
Vielen Dank 😊
very interesting video (and great photos!)
Thanks a lot, Shoy 😊
Have a great Sunday,
Christian
Nice explanation of when to use B&W, and by the way, while not commonly used, extraordinariness is a legitimate English word so you are good to go.
Hi Keith, thank you so much, my friend! Especially for the clarification about the word "extraordinariness". I was not sure about that 😊
Merry Christmas,
Christian
Great job on the video Christian. You used some fantastic examples to show what you were talking about. B&W can be so powerful with strong contrasting light in landscape. Even so with street photography too. Thank you for sharing the video buddy cheers 🍻 🙏
Hi Adrian, thank you so much, buddy 😊 Oh yes, for street photography I would even say, b&w is almost predestinated. So so fantastic that it also adds so much to awesome landscape scenes 🙂
Enjoy your weekend,
Christian
It took me 2 weeks to get through this video. Maybe it’s a south Germanic thing to over planning the photography. I don’t think we North Germanic people are so stuck up on it. B/W and colour is a personal taste. The sailboat picture remaind me of Claude Monet Sailboats paintings
Hi Thomas, of course, there runs a lot of taste into it, as well. But in my experience, there are anyway a lot of situations when the b&w image is the better choice to tell the story than the colour image and vice versa. But of course, many photographers decide between b&w and colour just on their taste and there is really nothing wrong with that. In the end, it should make fun.
And thank you for the comparison to Monet 😊
Merry Christmas! I hope you are enjoying some nice Christmas days with your family,
Christian
I believe that you really summed up B & W. If color "distracts" from the scene then remove it. If color obfuscates form, contrast and shapes, removing it can improve the photo. B & W often augments symbolism in a photo. Very nice video.
Hi Erich, thank you so much, my friend 😊 It is one possibility to relinquish colour if it doesn't add. I like to do it in that way. But of course, there are a lot of photographers who love just to photograph b&w, and that's also great. It shows just which fantastic flexibility we have in photography. There is a working concept for everyone 🙂
And yes, absolutely: symbolism gets boosted with monochrome images.
Thanks a lot for watching and enjoy your weekend,
Christian
Always
Haha, yes, that's definitely a possibility 😆 As mentioned in the video, my approach is to avoid colour when it doesn't add, but it so so fantastic that there are photographers out there who shoot just b&w. Just go on with that, my friend 😉
Have a great weekend,
Christian
I think more of those work in black and white than you imagine.
Hi John, sure, a lot of photos work in black and white, but in my experience: not all 😊 There are some images out there, which are simply defined by colour.
Some images would work if we would change the composition slightly, some work in black and white, but then they tell a different story.
But I know what you mean: if we go out for a dedicated black and white session, we get photos we had never thought about before.
Thanks a lot for watching, my friend!
Nice greetings,
Christian
