I have just discovered your channel today. As an ex-teacher I have to compliment you on your presentation style. Clear, articulate, and to the point. No waffle, um or errs. Excellent. Very informative and clear. I will certainly be following your channel.
Thanks for the video..I like to start with using a red, blue, or green filter first with Nik Filters. Then I use a luminosity filter to create deeper contrast.
What a truly awesome video!!! I love your family!!! The kids are so cute!!! I remember similar trips with my family as a kid!!! Brings back warm fuzzy memories that your kids will cherish there entire life!!! Great photos for black and white!!! Amazing editing!!! 👍👍👍🇺🇲
As always Will, you are able to show all aspects of the soot and processing and make it simple to follow for us that are not so savvy in this. 😁 Love the way you show what is really important too with the time with your family and being in the moment.
Great to see you out with the family William, I’m sure they would have loved that camping out with Mum and Dad. The B&W conversion process was really helpful and I have a better understanding of that now, thanks for sharing your knowledge
Another great video. Was just down in Fiordland the past few days. I did Key Summit a few times, and Lake Maian trying to capture the epic views but the weather just wasn’t playing ball. I had to keep telling myself to stop trying to force an image and just enjoy the scenery. Im glad watching your video afterwards reiterated that for me. Missed the epic views but got an awesome shot of a South Island Robin.
Hey mate. Glad you had a nice time here. Fiordland is certainly a place that makes you work and seems to enjoy crushing your plans. Photogs come here with a short amount of time but high expectations and goals, which usually results in disappointment. Having several ideas and an open mind is certainly the best approach for sure.
Transformed it into a striking image... the difference is amazing. I guess, not all images would work as well and you have to have the knack of knowing which will and which won't. Loved seeing the family enjoying themselves too (a natural eye for beauty was obvious). Wonderful, William.
Beautiful location to share and experience with your family. Thanks for the tips on processing, in particular your use of atmospheric perspective and use of transform rather than cropping.
Really glad I found & subscribed to your channel....very great instruction with an ideal presentation...love that you include the family too.....great stuff for sure...
Neat video, the biggest help was your comment about selecting a good photo to keep or edit. I’m trying to improve technically, so I take as many as I can but it results in a hard drive full with “not bad” photos.
Hi William, what another top video and so beautifully presented. 5 Star ! I just gave you another thumbs up AND I finally subscribed because you deserve lots of subscriptions. It's also nice to see a Dad bringing up the kids in such a lovely environment and teaching them useful things for their life. Stay safe, Carl / Hervey Bay 🇦🇺
Brilliant one William, again another great tutorial. I just took a similar shot today (Swiss mountains) and was thinking about BnW as the light was too hazy for any good colours. Thanks again 👌
Great video Will. Is there any difference in combining the focus stack first and then doing the post-processing as opposed to what you do here re processing one image, then copying across all three before combining the focus stack?
Thanks legend. No real difference. Potentially less destructive working on the files first, as they’re still the original raw. Nothing to really over think though, just do whatever feels natural.
Thank you very much... I'm a documentary photographer in I'm working in a visual project with include the ancient navigation in the American pacific, you work give me a lot of information tank you very much exelente work
Another great vid William. Question...Does ACR have the ability to click on those 3 pics and 'Open as layers in Photoshop", the way Lightroom does? I'm thinking of switching my workflow from LR/PS to Bridge/ACR/LR.
Hi William, another fantastic vid mate. How would you go about preparing a photo like this for printing at home? I don't know if it's just me but i think that all the saved shots i take should be printed so i was wondering how you go about getting things ready for your prints.
I'm not using ACR / PS (Affinity Photo instead) but I've always stacked then edited. Is there an advantage to editing first then stacking? My rationale, as thin as it may be, is that if there was any change between frames such as focus breathing, etc., I want to eliminate that before editing in case my edits on one frame didn't precisely match another. This is particularly true if I'm cropping. Am I overlooking something? Great video, thanks.
Honestly, it doesn’t overly matter. I prefer to process first, then stack as I figured the edit is slightly more ‘non destructive’ because I’m processing on the raws vs a flattened layer. But honestly I think the difference is negligible.

@@WilliamPatinoPhotography given that Affinity Photo doesn't do raw stacking and I don't use Affinity's raw editor anyway, I'm operating on TIFFs. So it's no difference for me -- I've already thrown away any advantage by that point! LOL Thanks.
Focus stacking with three shots front to back HANDHELD.. 😮😮 could you brief on that.. I know it's done on a tripod or is it the camera inbuilt feature as we have it in the Sony A7R V??.. TIA
Hey mate! The A7R5 has the built in feature which shifts the focus for you automatically. I’ve been shooting only handheld for 5-6 years now though, so I just have little methods which I use to make it possible.
Thanks mate.. I too use a Sony A7R V but I have never ever tried focus stacking hand held. Of late I have started taking more pics without a tripod thanks to your videos...cheers buddy... Much appreciated
I have a real problem with post editing, apart from a slight crop and removal of an branch or twig or two from my photos.I don’t know ? It just seems like cheating to me,some photos I’ve seen are nothing like the original taken. I occasionally use Snapseed mainly for ease but even with this I find I don’t know what I’m really doing. There are so many different photoshop and Lightroom videos on the net is there one that starts from the very beginning? Something that takes you through a work flow to reach your end goal. Eg. what should come first, shadows, contrast, highlights ect.I figure if I’m going to dip my toe into this editing thing best do it right. I know there are courses, but money plays a bit part for me. I enjoy your videos and have decided to follow yourself and one other only for photography content. Thank for an assistance, regards.
Thanks. Search my name with Lightroom. There’s a complete start to finish on there. I understand what you are saying. You’re limiting yourself and your creativity if you think digital photography is just about the camera. Post processing is an integral part of the workflow and there’s no limit, rules or cheating unless you create that for yourself. Painters have also never really painted an exact literal moment in time. You just find what works for you and helps complete the artistic vision. It’s quite rare to be able to complete the image in the field, just like how film couldn’t be developed in the field. Enjoy the process. Cheers.
Well now they can be B&W as well as crap, lol. Just kidding. Location, composition and light are right at the top of importance in photography though. Working on those three will do wonders, then the processing is there as the final piece. Best of luck mate.
Agree with most this except it’s disgusting to say that an elderly person should not allowed to live out their last days in the home they worked hard and payed for.

Thanks Joan! Yes, natural contrast in the scene is the key. Thanks :)
Fogggggg!! 😍 Also my gawd your kids are the most adorable lil backpackers ever!
As always, a great video with such generous sharing of tips and techniques. Thank you Will!

Thanks, I never have used the brush tool in LR the way you have with curves, I need to try it. I guess at 76 I still have a lot to learn, ;)

That was really helpful. I'm working on some B&W conversations at the moment and this really helps. Keep up the great work 👍
Great to hear, thank you!
Another awesome tutorial Will, just need to find a comp that lends itself to B&W👍
Thanks mate. Easier said than done. Currently working on a B&W masterclass. Cheers!
Never used photo stacking but your videos are better than going to school lol.
Haha thank you
This was fantastic! I might try this later on some photos. Cheers!

Wonderful
Thanks man
Nice photos as always
Just a question, where was it? I have been living in Ecuador and is so similar to Cajas National Park, although I know it is not
Thanks mate. It’s Fiordland in the South Island of New Zealand
informative video
🖤🤍 thx!!
Another great vid William.
Question...Does ACR have the ability to click on those 3 pics and 'Open as layers in Photoshop", the way Lightroom does? I'm thinking of switching my workflow from LR/PS to Bridge/ACR/LR.
Unfortunately not, that’s the one and only thing I prefer about Lightroom. Not enough to make me switch though haha. Cheers!

Thank you mate. Check my channel, I have one on preparing files for print, just a few posts back.
Hi Will what lenses are you using here, looks like one is Sony 12-24, but what is the mid telephoto lens 75mm?. Love you B&W editing process. Thanks
Cheers mate. Yes 12-24 f/2.8 and Tamron 28-75mm 2.8
Hi! How many hours of lessons in your bw master class?
Hey! About 4 hours from memory :) details are on the website. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing Bill, but my photos are timeless without any work - they're of my kids!
Haha, fair enough!
What camera are you using that does auto focus bracketing? Thanks.
Sony A7R5. Canon R5 and Nikon Z7ii also do it.
Thanks!

I came here to comment on the order too... I've always stacked before editing - would be interested to hear William's thoughts on that?
