I can't even describe what an epiphany this has been for me. I've been struggling with a bad back this season and it's really limited my practice and playing time. As a result, when I do get to play I've been hitting the ball extremely poorly and inconsistently. I've even considered setting down the clubs for a while then I watched this video. I've played golf for more than 30 years and this has been my worst ball striking ever. I realized in my desire to hit the ball better, I've just been swinging harder. To no ones surprise, it hasn't worked. You'd think that after 30 years these things don't happen but alas, it took this video to wake me up. I've always been a big strong guy, growing up on a farm does that, so the desire to swing hard was cemented in. I went to the range last week after watching this video and the results were instantaneous and nothing short of incredible. On Tuesday I was hitting pure 4 irons again and I honestly can't remember when I've struck a 4 iron that well. Thank you Adam, you've created a follower out of me.

Nice presentation. I have to disagree though with where the clubhead swishing sound should happen in a practice swing without a ball. Logic says it should be at the imaginary ball but in reality, in a great swing, it happens well past the ball. It's true that in an actual swing , when hitting a real ball, the clubhead reaches max speed just prior to impact, but that's because the collision slows the clubhead down as it transfers energy to the ball. The golfer however should strive to accelerate the clubhead through the ball. Any "thought" or conscious effort to decelerate at ANY time in the downswing is a swing wrecker. It's called early release. Full release happens when both arms are straight in the downswing and in a good golf swing that happens only in ONE location and it's when the clubhead is well past the ball. Yes it's actually about 2 feet past the ball. So , when turning the shaft around and swinging from the head end through the air without a ball, max swish should come about 2 feet past the imaginary ball. If it comes earlier you are early releasing. Something we all are good at :) BTW when doing the reverse shafted air ball swing, try it one handed with the right arm only. Then one handed with the left arm only. The left arm only method is a pulling method (ake swinging method). The right arm only method is a pushing method (aka hitting method). Find which method feels more natural for you then use it in your real 2 handed swing. Pull or push. Pick your poison. If you pull, never stop pulling. If you push, never stop pushing, until, in either method, the clubhead comes to rest all on its own as the shaft wraps itself around your neck and you look like Adam Scott at the finish or that LPGA logo .

I'd agree that both arms straight happens after the ball is struck, but the golf ball isn't heavy enough to slow the club down much (perhaps if the golfer took a huge divot) as it hits it. The image of top speed happening after impact might be a useful one for many players, but I'd want mine right around impact. Regards the deceleration, it's a measurable pattern in the downswing, and is used to transfer energy to the next segment. Certainly we are not advocating decelerating the golf club, but real speed can't be generated without the deceleration from hips to trunk to arms. Just went 39/43 yesterday for an 82 on a course that used to eat my lunch. These vids have helped tremendously. If I'm struggling with something out there, I just take a break and pull up an appropriate video on my phone!
What’s helped me the most was getting a swing speed radar. When I make a nice relaxed swing I get about 105-107mph. When I try to swing as fast as possible out of my shoes I get about 105-107. Lol.
FINALLY someone said it! 6:02 to 619 says it all! It's been a theory of mine and I'm glad to hear you say it. All golfers need to know that! The club cannot accelerate/release properly unless the hands are DE-celerating just before. (Adam we discussed it in comments on another video, but glad to hear it in one as well)

James Days .... how u hit a three wood further than a driver. o'because the wood has more loft. ... create more loft "look" with the driver by opening it up a degree or two. ensure the toe trails the heel, at setup. /
Think I might as well give up on golf. If I come back with the club parallel to the ground all I do is hit the ground before the ball. It's like I can't shift my fast enough.

I have to say that these are the best tutorials I've seen, Adam explains what he wants to put across in a way I find easy to repeat on the range and then the course. My ball striking has improved and my mental approach is much better, as I am confident in my own ability.

They all have back problems and other PGA golf players also have back problems, sir wanna mess your back up or destroy your back then golf is for you whoever wants to play golf and mess up their back keep doing this back pain technique. And keep playing Golf every single day golf is not an everyday sport.
Sorry you have such a negative view of the game. Like everything in life, things vary from case to case and person to person. I've known lots of golfers with consequent back problems, but also lots who played a great deal past the age of 80 with no problems. Best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy umm can you make a video of a golf swing that protects your back or prevent back pain and prevent injuries i did a research about the back problems and the science is if you spin your back further then you should that what causes the problems i play golf but im going to swing a spacific way so that i dont get back problems but although this vid is good those pro golfers had back problems. Likely a standard ladies length would work for a typical 16 year old girl. I wouldn't buy one (if she's a keen player) without fitting from an expert with a launch monitor. There are many variables that will affect how the club performs for her. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
This Effortless Power video describes every incorrect effort I've been making to increase my power and swing speed through impact. It's the 1st time anyone has ever explained how to control my swing speed, grip and wrist action, from the top of my backswing to impact. I can now see how I've been over doing my body rotation and coming over the top of the ball and swinging from outside to in. The comment about transferring energy from the handle at the top of the backswing, down the shaft to the club head at impact is a real gem! Also, no one has ever talked about the importance of "decelerating the body through the swing. Thank you so much for posting this. I'm headed to the range to practice this technique.

This guy for the most part does not have a clue as to what he is talking about. A range game can be carried to the golf course. The touring pros do it every day. Nicklaus, Palmer, and Hal Sutton told how to do it over and over again. Almost nobody listened. The first 4 to 6 inches of the take-away is in fact the most important part of the swing as they all stated all the time. This is the only place in the swing where you can synchronize your arms and hands to your big body trunk muscles. The big body muscles MUST INITIATE the swing back and carry the arms and shoulders with them in a passive way. YOU CANNOT "SNATCH" THE CLUB BACK FIRST WITH YOUR ARMS AND SHOULDERS LIKE ALMOST ALL HANDICAP PLAYERS DO. Then, when the hands stay centered to your chest, the rotator cuffs only go up and down, not around. Much simpler swing. And about 90 percent of the requirement for timing is eliminated. Timing only lasts in your brain about 2 minutes tops. The pro's call this getting and staying "connected" or "tightening up their swing". If this guy can't tell you this he is no legitimate teacher of the year. He simply does not know a touring pro swing. Hal Sutton even states in a RUclips video that in his prime, "my swing was only as good as the first few inches of my take away". Nicklaus has echoes that at least 100 times. He even stated that a swing can NEVER be recovered if it starts out wrong. Why ? Because the rotator cuffs, arms, and shoulders went crazy and out of sync by then and it is all timing from there. That works on the range where you are hitting one shot after the other and the brain is retaining timing. But not on the golf course where timing in the brain times out. As for me, I both talk the talk and walk the walk. I carry my range game to the golf course that way every single time. People marvel at how straight I hit the ball right from the get-go. You have to rid yourself of a timing dependent swing. That is how you do it. Also, be certain you are not letting go of the club with last three fingers of your left hand at the top. This introduces a lot of need for timing too because the club is then flopping around before you regrip it. This part is Tommy Bolt 101 (Google it). Finally. your swing should feel a lot tighter but the ball goes just as far or further if you also maintain good balance. Warning... learning to initiate the swing with the big body trunk muscles when you have done it with arms & shoulder all your life can be a tough nut to crack. Took me a lot of hours on the range to correct that bad habit. And like many touring pros, I now do two practice take-aways before every hit. I want to be certain I start the swing out right with those big trunk muscles just above my belt line. I call anything else a "snatch" of the club back and decent shots from there are all luck.

Man golf is hard. I figured out my backswing to keep my club face square at impact but now I’m trying to figure out how to keep loose and fluid to create enough power

Thanks, glad you like the videos. Regards indoor practice, certainly putting is one thing. Relative to full swing, it's a chance to work on technique. At minimum stretching and slow mo swings. You are one of my favorite instructors on youtube. People might have missed the deceleration part, and to me this is very important technique to release the club properly. You could break this video into 2 or 3 segments in my opinion. Anyway, we ell done...very valuable advice!
My hips tend to be overactive and I spin out a lot, especially as I strive for more clubhead speed. How do you manage that with your students? Video on that would be great. Thanks

been trying to get rid of the HIT when playing the actual shot. practice swings are great, nothing like when over the ball. I think I need psychological help
It's an easy pattern to get in to. I'd work on it at the range, try just calmly 'noticing' what's happening mentally when you hit (at what point in swing does the urge happen, where do you feel it in your body etc etc). This often produces better results and insights than 'trying' to do something. Best of luck, Adam
hey love your videos and ive been watching nonstop (im an average golfer given my broken shoulder cuz the bones are overlapped on my top left shoulder about 2 inches down from the socket) and i still lead with my hips before hitting the ball any tips on how to stop doing that? i always slice with my driver but my irons i hit them perfect to the point where i use them on a par 5 mostly unless its a dogleg right then i use my driver and use the slice to my advantage lol but any tips i would love to hear thanks and have and amazing as you are day.

Your swing is effortless. mentality and the knd of person you are I guess plays a big part in how you swing. I feel I'm not a relaxed enough person to swing that easy. I want to hit it more. Tiger could never swing as easy as Ernie els he wants to muscle it more. so personality plays a big part in how u swing the club

Adam, Great advice and very understandable! My biggest forever mistake is swinging too hard , starting the down swing before finishing the takeaway. Monday 3 over par, Wed 94,yikes! Great video's and so much honest details given too us GOLFERS! But I was wondering if you have any advice for some of us golfers out here who put others first -ie - rushing shots as the group behind us are pushing our group, resulting in duffing one's shot/s, golfer on the fairway/s am playing on and they just stands in my way waiting for me to play, not standing aside, but one is aware they are there and that I could hit one of them! This has always been my down fall and I can't keep focused on my golf swing and am sure there are many golfers out there who have this same problem, it would be great too shut them out of one's mind when playing one's shot as some viewers would think this would be easy, but we are who we are and are so aware of being considerate for others! You can't change who you are, but am sure you could give a little light on this subject in how too shut this out of one's mind when playing a shot? My buddies don't find this being a problem too them as they do not care if they are holding other golfers back or if they hit other golfers that are on the fairway that they are playing on! I wish I could be like them, but I can't change who I am! HELP!
+alan carlyon Thanks for the good question. I think its commendable to have concern for slow play and the experience the group behind you is having, but you are not the one causing the problem there is not much you can do about it. As you say, even in that case it's hard not to feel that if you rush a little it's somehow helping, or at least polite. I'd recommend that you time your pre-shot routine in practice, and by routine I mean what it takes once the club is in your hand to settle in, set up, and hit. Likely the difference in time between a pace that's comfortable and one that's rushed is seconds at most. My point is try all you can to speed things up, and encourage others to do so UNTIL that routine. The few seconds rushing might save won't make a difference to anyone, so commit (for that short time) to do what you need to do. Hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam

Great video, I tried this and felt a whip-like sensation to get the swoosh on release of the hinge in my wrists. Exactly when should I release the hinge in my wrists?

FINALLY someone said it! 6:02 to 619 says it all! It's been a theory of mine and I'm glad to hear you say it. All golfers need to know that! The club cannot accelerate/release properly unless the hands are DE-celerating just before. (Adam we discussed it in comments on another video, but glad to hear it in one as well)

I have to say that these are the best tutorials I've seen, Adam explains what he wants to put across in a way I find easy to repeat on the range and then the course. My ball striking has improved and my mental approach is much better, as I am confident in my own ability.

They all have back problems and other PGA golf players also have back problems, sir wanna mess your back up or destroy your back then golf is for you whoever wants to play golf and mess up their back keep doing this back pain technique. And keep playing Golf every single day golf is not an everyday sport.
Sorry you have such a negative view of the game. Like everything in life, things vary from case to case and person to person. I've known lots of golfers with consequent back problems, but also lots who played a great deal past the age of 80 with no problems.

Mr. Bazelgette I have my daughter (16) working on these motions. What would you recommend for a proper driver length for a 16 year old?
Likely a standard ladies length would work for a typical 16 year old girl. I wouldn't buy one (if she's a keen player) without fitting from an expert with a launch monitor. There are many variables that will affect how the club performs for her.

This Effortless Power video describes every incorrect effort I've been making to increase my power and swing speed through impact. It's the 1st time anyone has ever explained how to control my swing speed, grip and wrist action, from the top of my backswing to impact. I can now see how I've been over doing my body rotation and coming over the top of the ball and swinging from outside to in.
The comment about transferring energy from the handle at the top of the backswing, down the shaft to the club head at impact is a real gem! Also, no one has ever talked about the importance of "decelerating the body through the swing. Thank you so much for posting this. I'm headed to the range to practice this technique.

This guy for the most part does not have a clue as to what he is talking about. A range game can be carried to the golf course. The touring pros do it every day. Nicklaus, Palmer, and Hal Sutton told how to do it over and over again. Almost nobody listened. The first 4 to 6 inches of the take-away is in fact the most important part of the swing as they all stated all the time. This is the only place in the swing where you can synchronize your arms and hands to your big body trunk muscles. The big body muscles MUST INITIATE the swing back and carry the arms and shoulders with them in a passive way. YOU CANNOT "SNATCH" THE CLUB BACK FIRST WITH YOUR ARMS AND SHOULDERS LIKE ALMOST ALL HANDICAP PLAYERS DO. Then, when the hands stay centered to your chest, the rotator cuffs only go up and down, not around. Much simpler swing. And about 90 percent of the requirement for timing is eliminated. Timing only lasts in your brain about 2 minutes tops. The pro's call this getting and staying "connected" or "tightening up their swing". If this guy can't tell you this he is no legitimate teacher of the year. He simply does not know a touring pro swing. Hal Sutton even states in a RUclips video that in his prime, "my swing was only as good as the first few inches of my take away". Nicklaus has echoes that at least 100 times. He even stated that a swing can NEVER be recovered if it starts out wrong. Why ? Because the rotator cuffs, arms, and shoulders went crazy and out of sync by then and it is all timing from there. That works on the range where you are hitting one shot after the other and the brain is retaining timing. But not on the golf course where timing in the brain times out. As for me, I both talk the talk and walk the walk. I carry my range game to the golf course that way every single time. People marvel at how straight I hit the ball right from the get-go. You have to rid yourself of a timing dependent swing. That is how you do it. Also, be certain you are not letting go of the club with last three fingers of your left hand at the top. This introduces a lot of need for timing too because the club is then flopping around before you regrip it. This part is Tommy Bolt 101 (Google it). Finally. your swing should feel a lot tighter but the ball goes just as far or further if you also maintain good balance. Warning... learning to initiate the swing with the big body trunk muscles when you have done it with arms & shoulder all your life can be a tough nut to crack. Took me a lot of hours on the range to correct that bad habit. And like many touring pros, I now do two practice take-aways before every hit. I want to be certain I start the swing out right with those big trunk muscles just above my belt line. I call anything else a "snatch" of the club back and decent shots from there are all luck.

Hey Adam! Love your videos! They've been a great help for me this season in Saskatchewan, Canada; it's a short one here! Thanks, glad you like the videos. Regards indoor practice, certainly putting is one thing. Relative to full swing, it's a chance to work on technique. At minimum stretching and slow mo swings. If you have a net to hit in to and can film yourself that would be ideal.

been trying to get rid of the HIT when playing the actual shot. practice swings are great, nothing like when over the ball. I think I need psychological help
It's an easy pattern to get in to. I'd work on it at the range, try just calmly 'noticing' what's happening mentally when you hit (at what point in swing does the urge happen, where do you feel it in your body etc etc). This often produces better results and insights than 'trying' to do something.

hey love your videos and ive been watching nonstop (im an average golfer given my broken shoulder cuz the bones are overlapped on my top left shoulder about 2 inches down from the socket) and i still lead with my hips before hitting the ball any tips on how to stop doing that? i always slice with my driver but my irons i hit them perfect to the point where i use them on a par 5 mostly unless its a dogleg right then i use my driver and use the slice to my advantage lol but any tips i would love to hear thanks and have and amazing as you are day.

Your swing is effortless. mentality and the knd of person you are I guess plays a big part in how you swing. I feel I'm not a relaxed enough person to swing that easy. I want to hit it more. Tiger could never swing as easy as Ernie els he wants to muscle it more. so personality plays a big part in how u swing the club

Great advice and very understandable! My biggest forever mistake is swinging too hard , starting the down swing before finishing the takeaway. Monday 3 over par, Wed 94,yikes! My driver is good have more issues with shorter irons full swing.

Great video's and so much honest details given too us GOLFERS! But I was wondering if you have any advice for some of us golfers out here who put others first -ie - rushing shots as the group behind us are pushing our group, resulting in duffing one's shot/s, golfer on the fairway/s am playing on and they just stands in my way waiting for me to play, not standing aside, but one is aware they are there and that I could hit one of them!
This has always been my down fall and I can't keep focused on my golf swing and am sure there are many golfers out there who have this same problem, it would be great too shut them out of one's mind when playing one's shot as some viewers would think this would be easy, but we are who we are and are so aware of being considerate for others! You can't change who you are, but am sure you could give a little light on this subject in how too shut this out of one's mind when playing a shot? My buddies don't find this being a problem too them as they do not care if they are holding other golfers back or if they hit other golfers that are on the fairway that they are playing on! I wish I could be like them, but I can't change who I am! HELP!

Thanks for the good question. I think its commendable to have concern for slow play and the experience the group behind you is having, but you are not the one causing the problem there is not much you can do about it. As you say, even in that case it's hard not to feel that if you rush a little it's somehow helping, or at least polite. I'd recommend that you time your pre-shot routine in practice, and by routine I mean what it takes once the club is in your hand to settle in, set up, and hit. Likely the difference in time between a pace that's comfortable and one that's rushed is seconds at most.
My point is try all you can to speed things up, and encourage others to do so UNTIL that routine. The few seconds rushing might save won't make a difference to anyone, so commit (for that short time) to do what you need to do.

Great video, I tried this and felt a whip-like sensation to get the swoosh on release of the hinge in my wrists. Exactly when should I release the hinge in my wrists?
Thanks, glad you liked the video. The release begins prior to impact, let's say approx hands near right hip. The wrists should be fully released (both wrists unhinged and shaft pointing between forearms) a foot or two past the ball. Hope this helps.

Hi again Adam, I had a few shots trying this method and lost balance most of the time. i either skulled the ball or hit it at least 1 inch behind the ball. Any tip to keep myself in rythem and balance?
Basically, when I "swoosh" the club, I loose my balance. Please help.
Without seeing you swing it's hard to say. I'd try doing it on a small scale and go from there. Hope it goes better for you.
