This is a best lesson on a fairway wood that I’ve ever seen. Thank you soooooo much for saying where everything went from ball, to club to hands to the shallow swing. Nothing is worse than watching a video and the golfer left one of those steps out. Great great video.
you made me realize that I was hitting all balls with the same swing, and now I've modified my swing to "sweep" the woods. Real improvement. The key concepts are, "sweet spot, club face, hit down with irons but skip stones with woods."
I've only just seen your channel, this video is superb. RUclips instruction videos rarely take into account the different lies or ages/abilities of players as a factor. Really nailed it, I'll be watching more from now on. Thanks
I started golf in HS and played for about one season. After which I played about 6 times over a span of 7 years or so. I just started to get back into golf again, and I’ve never been good at using woods or long irons. (I don’t even keep woods in my bag aside from a hybrid 3 that I never use). These videos have given me the knowledge on how to try them out effectively. I can’t wait to try them out on the range and maybe the course next week!
Thank you. I forget who I listened and was told when hitting a 3 wood put the ball even with the emblem on your shirt, but a woman usually don’t have an emblem on her blouse so I always would line up with my left breast. The problem I have is I top it. A few times I did it like you just showed and hit it more solid. So with watching you I now know I was doing it right by hitting where it feels better for me. Thank you. I’m only 5 foot tall and if I widen my stance it seems like I’m always hitting the ball to the left. When I don’t take a wide stance it goes straighter. Thank you.
My nephew and I went to play our favorite northern Michigan course, Manitou Passage and he hit a great 3 wood on a par 5 and made birdie. We watched your video the night before. Thanks Adam for all your help.
Thank you Adam, yes, .. very helpful tips you have helped me to drive old 1 woods 200 m consistently with your savy set up and preparantion guidance instructions i've followed and added to existing techiniques ! So now i will try to select two highspeed long low loft sweeping clubs one an iron another a wood or hybrid, just to get that second fairway drive onto greens on 400 m plus holes well worth practising but the hybrids seem to have the most boing giving easier distance tho they take an adjusted swing viz a viz the usual drives perhaps !
Yes at best we love golf, tho i think the game is more spiritual than physical, sinse the courses are so well cared for and natural ! Consistency is the toighest part of the game! But it is oh so glorious to middle that shot off the t ! And very enjoyable, thank you Adam 😃
Excellent description of tossing the club and the sweeping effect you want from your swing plan using woods. I'm in infantile stage of learning this game, that explanation made perfect sense.
Hello Adam,I have recently discovered Scratch Golf Academy on you tube I love all the great golf tips that you give to all of us golfers.kind regards in GolfWillie from Dublin, Ireland
Thank you for this video and putting the image of throwing my 3-wood down the fairway. I had it all wrong...I usually visualize tossing the club AFTER I hit the ball.
This video has made the most dramatic impact on my swing with woods. The advice of how to descend the club to impact the ball at the right angle made a huge difference in not just hitting woods off the ground but my driver too. I was coming way too aggressive at the ball before and this made it so much easier to launch the ball with the least spin as possible.
Thanks for this video! I struggle with consistent fairway wood strikes from the ground. I have the length off the tee, but can never take advantage on the Par 5's. I will give this a try.
Your rock skipping analogy helped a lot. I've found myself coming down too steeply lately, but I used the stone skipping movement, and it helped a lot at the range today.
I've always been leary of my fairway wood play rely heavily on irons in fairway situations but I would really like to use them this video hopefully helps. Keep up the informative videos they have helped me immensely.
Great video! I've also struggled with this shot, and I like how you gave some general ideas and also kept the swing "customizable" to the individual. See too many people talking of one way to swing the golf club. The demonstration of the club tossing at the end was accurate on many different levels haha! Keep the great content coming
Lots of great info. Can't wait to try out what I learned. I know I will review this video many times as well as your video to avoid hitting behind the ball which I can't seem to learn how to do.
Can’t wait to get out and play today after seeing this I struggle big time with that area of my game hopefully I see more pars on par 4s and 5s than double and triple bogeys
Great video. For the longest time I was topping my fw woods until a friend saw my alignment. I was playing off left heel like a driver. Once I moved ball just front of center, problem solved. Thanks.
Different Lies, sometimes means more loafted club...So now we realize, sometimes to get better result from the lie we in, we might land short of the green, which would be better than trying to force a club selection that does not suit the situation we put ourselves in...So positive thinking kicks in....Because will have better opportunity to get up and down, or pitch inn.....Great Video
So many of you guys make videos about not topping fairways, but noone seems to make one about duffing them. Perhaps an opportunity Adam?! Im trying everything not to hit the ground, but even my good fairway woods have a divot under the ball(not in front) so too steep. Bad ones start behind ball. Yet trying so hard not to be steep. I enjoy your stuff thanks
Great tips. I’m only 50%+ success w/fairway woods. Been trying to work on it. I love how I hit my 7 wood. Is there much difference between 7wd and a 4 hybrid?
You my friend make this so helpful, I have had the yips and listening to you explain everything I am doing wrong, makes me understand where I went wrong. Thank you, looking to bringing my game back to where it once was!
I am a late starter to the game at 50. I have found your videos easy to watch and follow for a beginner, thanks for putting them together. I have learnt that with so much info out there I can quickly become confused. In a good way the simple points you make help me to relax when addressing and hitting the ball, thankyou. The grass my ball lands on doesn't look anything like yours in Florida haha. Thanks for your help.
Lee, Thanks for the note, glad it's helping. Yes, the grass at Mediterra (fancy club!) is pretty darn nice. In the near future I will be offering comprehensive courses in all aspects of the game at www.scratchgolfacademy.com Either way, best of luck going forward. Adam
Hi Adam, great video as always! I have a follow up question: how can you reduce the AOA with this club? I’m generally 4 down with most clubs but even more so with 3 wood and rescue. How can I shallow it? Wider stance? Further forward? Do you have a video on this please?
Thanks Marto. I'd say some combination of what you suggest is the way to go. The lie makes a difference in what you want also. Ball sitting on top of fluffy grass can be played almost like a driver. All the best, Adam
You are an EXCELLENT coach. I've been a pro ski instructor and race coach nearly 20 years, and recently discovered golf. There has been a massive exposure to coaching athletes of all levels in my experience.... and you've GOT the right stuff. Although you already know it.... its just nice to have some more validation. Thank you!
great video as always, never thought about the swing plane, i was hitting my 3 wood similar to a long iron and it was not great, now i will practice with this new thought in mind. thanks a lot!
after weeks of practice my longest 3W has been over 240, my typical distance is 220 depending on all those factors that come to play on course. Thanks a lot for the video.
Just want to say, "Thank you so much for all of your instructional videos." They have helped me play the best golf of my entire life. I'm more confident and I am sure that I will be breaking 80 in the very near future. Thanks again.
Hey Adam. I found that placing the ball back in my stance instead of too much forward eliminated almost all ball topping. I guess I just naturally hit downward a bit on the ball from that placement and it works out well. I played two 18 hole rounds yesterday and the results with my 3 and 5 woods were excellent. I have the Ping G 400 Woods. 3,5,7 and 9. Good tutorial. Love your content. Best wishes.. Spider Dubiel
Hi Adam, really enjoyed this video thankyou. When hitting the 3W, is it like your sweeping the broom theory? That is, do you still hit the ball and brush the ground afterwards with a little forward lean of the shaft?
Nice video. I would point out that hitting it straight is at least as important as hitting it long. Long irons and woods are great tools for parking balls 50+ yds into the woods.
Thank you for making this video, it's very helpful and easy to understand. I can hit my 7 and 5 woods off the deck much better now. The explanation of different lies is awesome! Pls keep posting these great videos .
Adam - good as always but you use a hybrid in part of this - does that mean we play a hybrid as per the wood - I don't see a hybrid video on the website yet. - (I have a 3 and 4 iron equivalent hybrid) - thanks
Paul,Thanks. In thinking about it I used the hybrid because it's a little easier to hit, especially on a partial shot. However, in hindsight I can see where that might create a little confusion. I'd say that basically they are hit like fairway woods, and that you'd deal with the loft/lie the same way you'd do it on a fairway wood. Thanks for your interest. Best, Adam
Adam, your instruction shaved 9 strokes off of my average score! I have been watching your videos for a week and yesterday I shot the best round of my life. thank you!
Jeannette, It's not necessarily bad to take grass (small divots) with fairway woods. If the divots get deep and chunky you are likely coming down on too steep a plane. Try to brush more. I hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam
Hi Adam, Thanks for all the great help. I do have a question. I know we need forward shaft lean on iron shots but no one has ever really dove into how much is needed. I am struggling with figuring out how far ahead my hands need to be. Going to far forward results in such a steep, choppy, hack at the ball. Can you please explain? Thanks so much and keep up the great work! - Bill
Hello Adam, club faces of 4 and 5-wood are always quite curve, should it be that way despite of manufacturers or there are options at proshop? And any tips to overcome misdirection with that kind of the face?
Tokin, They are designed that way to help. Look on line for videos done on 'the gear effect" to learn the reason. Brian Manzella and Martin Chuck would be two guys to check out. Best, Adam
Sorry you're struggling. I'd try to master solid contact on a small scale. If it's of interest, at www.scratchgolfacademy.com I offer on line golf lessons. Best, Adam
Ray, Sorry to hear about your back. I'm not a medical expert, so I'd recommend you consult someone who is in general. I would, however advise that you make a sound on plane swing, just make the swing shorter and smoother as you feel is needed. Hope this helps a little. All the best, Adam
Thanks for watching the video. If you will be in the Naples area you can go to www.adambgolf.com and see info about private lessons on the 'book a lesson' page. I also offer personal on line coaching to Premium Mebers at www.scratchgolfacademy.com All the best, Adam
God please help, guide and assist me to fully integrate, practice, understand and perfect all of these wonderful golf lessons, insights and the wisdom of the teacher and all of his unseen teachers, remove any and all blockages from my past, present and future lives from doing this, also ask any and all humans in the light who would love to assist me, the Solar System, the Sun the Moon, all plants, animals and insects. Thank you.
One issue I encounter with my fairway wood (currently an older Adams Tight Lies) is that I somehow "pop fly" the ball and it goes 150yds rather than 200+. What is the most likely cause of this? Happens on grass and mats.
Rob, The only way to pop fly the ball with that kind of yardage loss is to hit it at the top edge of the clubface. This is unlikely off grass (unless ball is sitting up on top of taller grass), and all but impossible off a mat. My best guess would be a weak slice type of shot that would involve a glancing hit. Sorry I can'r be more help. All the best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy thanks Adam. Appreciate your time as always. I must be striking down on the ball with my swing at times to get it under the ball like that. I'm trying to ingrain the sweeping motion you're teaching!
My 3 wood will be the death of me. I am now hitting a 2 iron. Hoping your demonstration will give me the confidence to again use my 3 wood. Thank you Patrick Ryan (88 year old golfer)
Kerol, I have several fairway wood videos at the channel. Also, a whole course on fairway woods in my Full Swing Master Series DVD & online access instruction. All the best, Adam
It's so easy to understand the theory of golf but the execution is so much more difficult. I broke 90 just one time by one stroke and right now, I feel I'm just not getting any better. Just more lucky. I want to get legitimately better, not luckier.
It’s certainly not the easiest game there is. Like most skills, it mostly comes down to time on task along with feedback (a predictable answer, I know). One option to consider is www.scratchgolfacademy.com (inexpensive, and you can cancel anytime), as there are complete in depth courses there. You can move along at your own pace. Best of luck to you moving forward. Thanks, Adam
I notice that you don't mention the bottom of the swing to determine where the club will strike the ball. Do you find that it is important to know this?
This is a best lesson on a fairway wood that I’ve ever seen. Thank you soooooo much for saying where everything went from ball, to club to hands to the shallow swing. Nothing is worse than watching a video and the golfer left one of those steps out. Great great video.

What do you do if you have a bad back with your swing? I can't take a full swing etc?
Ray,
Sorry to hear about your back. I'm not a medical expert, so I'd recommend you consult someone who is in general. I would, however advise that you make a sound on plane swing, just make the swing shorter and smoother as you feel is needed. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you.
Tall order there Michael, but thanks!

One issue I encounter with my fairway wood (currently an older Adams Tight Lies) is that I somehow "pop fly" the ball and it goes 150yds rather than 200+. What is the most likely cause of this? Happens on grass and mats.
Rob,
The only way to pop fly the ball with that kind of yardage loss is to hit it at the top edge of the clubface.
Hope it sorts itself out Rob
My 3 wood will be the death of me. I am now hitting a 2 iron. Hoping your demonstration will give me the confidence to again use my 3 wood. Thank you Patrick Ryan (88 year old golfer)
Best of luck Patrick!
I hope I'm lucky enough to be working on my game at that age.

If you can hit a 2 iron consistently that's great!
Awesome
Thanks, glad you liked the video.

Can you please make a video for 3 wood?
Kerol,
I have several fairway wood videos at the channel.
Yes, It's definitely important. On an average top players reach true bottom of swing several inches past the ball. Hope this helps.
