Suoh Volcano Eruption Update; New Eruption, 3 Powerful Explosions Occur
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 июн 2024
- Without warning, a series of 3 powerful explosions occurred this morning, sending tens of thousands of rock and mud into the air. This occurred at one of Sumatra's most dangerous volcanoes known as Suoh. What occurred was a cluster of phreatic eruptions, which this video will explain how they formed and the general geologic setting in Indonesia.
Note: The thumbnail of today's video shows the 2018 eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii and not the 2024 eruption of Suoh in Indonesia. The reason for this is I was unable to find a high enough resolution image to use for a thumbnail for Suoh, and decided to find an image which might somewhat closely match the appearance of its second explosion.

You are such a good science communicator and educator. Thank you for your excellent and frequent content, love it!
Agree! 🌋🌋🌋
I concur also
agree, he presents all the news and the backstory. So I know why some areas are more affected than others.
been watching this channel every day for a year now, can wholeheartedly agree.
Yes, wholeheartedly agree.
Love how I didn't know what this volcano was, so I looked it up, and the 4th image result was your video
Best source for geologic news, by far.
Thanks as always! The Great Sumatra fault is so starkly visible in the Sumatran Landscape, like other faults.
There are so many other dormant or extinct volcanic features near Suoh itself.
The exclusion zone must be obeyed.
Volcanoes are humbling. Even with all our technology and science, we still can't predict many natural disasters. We can always improve our knowledge and understanding. I hope those nearby are safe
I love these vids, never was interested in our planet's volcanic activity till i started watching. Good stuff man
I really enjoy your reporting. Thank you for the info and your efforts and time!
Earth didn't stop evolving just because people are here.
Indonesia always surprises us with new unexpected eruptions
yep, absolutely. But in recent months there have been a number of small eruptions or tremors near volcanoes around the world. I hope there is no major connection between them. Saw yesterday Italy, now Indonesia, Hawaii, Greenland! 🙏🙏
Lol so true! I mean I've lost count how many volcano have erupted there this past 3-5 years.. it just too many for one nation to endure them all, Indonesia is just can't catch a break with this one..
@@Zantigableiaust Indonesian here, there too many active volcano, I don't have any idea that ruang volcano and this volcano are in Indonesia. 😂
@@Ezekiel903 i'd be more scared if all of indonesia's volcanoes suddenly went silent for a few years
@@refindoazhar1507 Holy sh*t that's true fr! Scary af, but am I even allowed to pray Indonesian volcano to erupted all the time? But yeah, this was the unexpected one for sure..
Having 40 to 50 volcanoes erupting at any time makes for plenty to report on. It's always interesting.
As an E Science major myself, it's refreshing to hear things put simply by somebody who knows what they're talking about. Nice job.
Thank you Sir for sharing! Great information! 😊
Thanks for all of your hard work man!
Big landslide in Papua New Guinea too tho details are impossible atm
As always an excellent and informative presentation
Great video! I hadn't heard of Suoh volcano before!
Looks like a beautiful geothermal area there - I love places like that!
Hot springs, mudpots, geysers - wonderful!
Indeed. To me, this volcano is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Indonesia. Just be prepared to drive through some heavily damaged roads as this area is quite far from big cities.
It sounds geologically fascinating. I think there are only a couple spots along the San Andreas that are like that. One being a moving mud volcano in Southern California, which is more of a strange mudpot.
@@erinmcdonald7781 The moving mud volcano, you mean the one near Salton Buttes?
@@erinmcdonald7781if i'm not mistaken there's the biggest mud volcano in indonesia. You can search "lapindo mud volcano". It drowned some villages.
Great channel. Don't forget to like 👍🏻
Love your show. I have a question: If the Cascadia fault should rupture is there a chance that the San Andreas could break loose as well, or visa-versa? Thanks.
Strangely enough I was watching documentaries on the neighbouring Krakatau volcano this morning - though of course these two volcanoes are completely different in nature!
I hadn't heard of this unusual volcano before, nor did I realize that Sumatra had a fault similar to the San Andreas. Now, I'll have to keep an eye out to see how their behavior compares.
It's crazy how this eruption was a surprise. Nature is keeping us on our toes. 🍀🌏
I wanted to do volcano news but there’s no way I can do a better job than you! Good work brother
Could you make some videos covering the other large calderas in indonesia that you haven't yet talked about? Looking on google earth I can see multiples of them and always wonder what's their history and which bug eruptions made them
Thank you.
0:51 .. looks like Sumatran Tiger tracks!
whoaah, 💯!
Indonesia just can't seem to catch a break this year
Thanks for the random bit of structural geology... 👍👍👍
Seeing this video after we spent vacation near Mayon volcano in Albay, Philippines. Volcanoes are truly mysterious and awesome!
Dude i love suoh. its such an intresting volcano
Bro make an update on White Island, it just erupted yesterday morning
I’m saving that for Sunday since the eruption was very short lived.

Sumatra's got a lot of volcanoes.
It really is the year of the dragon huh?
How does surveying work in volcanically active areas?
Volcanic eruptions are exciting and terrifying events. I wonder if we will ever experience a super volcanic eruption like that of Toba in our lifetime.
What is the upper limit for a phreatic eruption?
Can anyone explain the difference between a phreatic eruption and a geothermic explosion?
Has suoh ever ejected magma? I didn’t see any vents/cones in its area from satellite
Edit: Nevermind, looked again and there definitely is one
"Tale as old as time..."
I always wondered about Krakatoa's nearby neighbors
Would you say this year or decade has lesser, normal, higher or greater volcanic activity?
Pretty normal, judging by the numbers of active volcanoes listed by GH every week.
What type of volcano is Suoh?
Good question because it does not fall under the usual volcano categories. It is referred to as a volcanic tectonic depression and also a caldera volcano similar to a maar. Eruptions are generally of the type in this video. Wikipedia has a little on this volcano.
Seems to be a few eruptions in south east Asia lately. Are they connected or just luck
This is fairly Normal for the Area
i wouldn't quite call that a volcano rather a hydro thermic vent. rather an "in-between" state between a volcano and a hot spring
Sumatran coffee is amazing
I was wondering if it would ever be possible for a valcanic eruption in Tennessee i know we got fault lines
Fault lines on their own are not enough - you need either a spreading ridge or convergent boundary, while the New Madrid fault zone is a strike-slip fault where two sides move side-to-side relative to each other. There are no known volcanic eruptions in Tennessee within the last 50 million years at least, and almost certainly will not be any in the geological future unless something significant changes in the geology of the state.
@@aperson1 I know that but their is so much we don't know about the earth I just was interested in the possibility
Is it a volcanic complex?
It is technically called a volcanic tectonic depression it apparently had tectonic origins which is due to the volcano sitting near a tectonic plate boundary.
That seems kind of general and vague, but that's how the geology articles describe it.
Tell me a day when Indonesia doesn't experience a volcanic eruption
I'm surprised Global Volcanism Program missed those more recent eruptions.
As well the earth quakes backed off in ice land!!!!!!
Wh y d o you sp lit up you r word s ? Must b e a muri can thi ng !!!!.
NOT MY COFFEE!
Someone estimates something to be about 100 metres.
Someone else then coverts the estimate into feet and reports 328 feet.
This annoys me.
When presented with estimates which are given in round figures do the conversion in round figures.
An estimate of 100 metres is an estimate of about 300 feet.
Even worse (not here mind you but elsewhere online) is when a temperature difference of 5 C is reported as 41 F.

How many detonationes of high explosives on one tectonic plate does it take to disturb/move the others worldwide. UKRAINE, RUSSIA.
Explosions daily for the last two years. Increased volcanic activity globally?

I was told to expect volcanism and severe weather after the solar events two weeks ago. I'm not sure if the results are just from my paying attention, but the past two weeks have been lively.

KEY PHRASE: "WITHOUT WARNING!"
More is coming oh earth!
Isn’t there a correlation between solar storms and more seismic activities? They don’t know why, but the data is there.
I believe that it has to do with energy coming into the system, the magnetosphere, atmosphere, and Earth's crust. The energy flows though the different media in different ways. We get aurora high up, intensified storms, and energy in crust will hit the most vulnerable, ready to go spots. At least that's my armchair take on what I've read.
Hmmm, space weather watchers predicted volcanic activity from May 11-June 1, along with increased earthquakes.
So I am thinking this will be in their favor.
Will you acknowledge the sun's solar ejections are causing the earth to be more active seismicly?
No, not more carbon… don’t tell the government they’ll cut the power.
The Earth is so over-charged right now because of the Sun. We were bound to see these effects, as the planet releases it's energy. Anytime you see those protons hitting the planet, you don't only get absorption at the poles, but you get the geomagnetic effect as well. These things help heat the magma and then the ball gets rolling.
why is Kip from Napoleon Dynamite narrating this
