I always hated when people did a dark room. It never looked good to me. Then I realized it’s because they didn’t paint the trim, doors, or ceiling. It looks disjointed. You have to go all out when going dark

In the end I fell in love with a solid wood entryway bench, with a white wash paint and modern/architecturally clean shape. It’s now the most complimented piece in my living space and all my friends want a “coffee table” like it. 🤣

I have all matching dining chairs and I love the look. The mismatched chairs almost gives me a we held on to chairs from previous dining sets because our current table didn't come with chairs kinda look. Not a fan myself. I like the idea of the same colour palette but different patterns for couch cushions etc. I do the mix of metals a bit in my home. I also do like the contrasting wood tones idea.

I agree; these rules can definitely be broken and you can still achieve a striking, unique look. And furniture should definitely be looked at from a creative standpoint. I had a very large, vintage red oak tv cabinet that would no longer fit today's wide flat-screen tvs--but with a few adjustments it makes a great prepper pantry (which was good because my kitchen is small). Everyone in the house calls it The Grocery Store. 😂 The only thing that still looks strange to me is art hung on book shelves. I think the items on the book shelves distract from the art itself.

Perfect timing. I've been debating about furniture color for my house. I just bought a small villa for which I am need a dining set. I would like to buy a light color wood dining set, but I have a leather sofa in a dark brown color (Espresso) for the living room. The floors of the house are a greyish color and the kitchen counter top has black, grey and white tones. Can someone tell me what is it going to look better? My question comes because I have an open floor plan in which the dining table is going to be next to the living room. I am thinking about getting a brown tone (wood) coffee table for the living room to match the sofa. Since that dining it is going to be right to the living room, should I get brown wood tone dining set too?
Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I was listening to the video not really watching the screen when you started talking about mixing and matching patterns and colors and I had gotten this entire image in my head from your words, of bright turquoise and marigold... a deep burgundy red paired with gold and violet... but then when I looked at the screen... oh my was I taken aback at the complete lack of color diversity! You basically have multiple shades of beige. Where's the color? Where is the daring splash? Please liebe Zuschauer, it looks AWESOME to have an actual splash of bright color, and contrasting colors DO actually complement each other surprisingly well! This bed looks just... boring. Like oatmeal. Like she's trying to keep it neutral because she's got a realtor coming by later. Come on Kristin, let's see some pop!

I also painted an old hall table and padded the top with some pretty fabric for a permanent ironing board in my sewing room. The drawers are handy for spray starch and even my little craft iron fits in there. I have a small kitchen butcher’s block next to my machine that stores my laptop in the drawer and sewing mags in a wire basket. It’s perfect for the spot. 👍

Think of the room color next to or closest to the bathroom & perhaps go w/ a deeper shade of that . For example : think dark chocolate brown if nearby walls are beige/ tan or navy if the other walls are blue , hunter green if others are light green , etc. You'll get the drama & interest of the dark color while continuing your overall color plan . Sort of a contrast + blend ! 💟

I love this video! I love that comforter and your ideas on paint. We have a dark living room which requires lights to be on pretty much all day. The paint color we have now is a whitish color which I have resolved myself to keep because I'm afraid anything else would darken it even more. We also have a small open-concept space so whatever happens in the living room, has to be good for the kitchen and eating area. I was thinking of warm tones but light such as ivory or colors somewhat like that comforter you showed. I love that color. Any thoughts? I love blue but not on the walls. My area rug is dark blue on beautiful walnut floors. Thank you!

I love the rule about wood tones! My husband & I have been hesitant about buying some new furniture because we’ve been trying to get it all to match. Love that mixing it up is actually a better option!

Agree with everything you said! I have 2 different style chairs for my kitchen table, have painted small rooms dark, feel it makes them appear larger. I'm not a big print person but mix multiple textures. I have brushed nickel hardware for all doors and most light ceiling light fixtures but have gold, champagne, and bronze pieces throughout my home. My old glass dining table now serves as a desk. I love using dressers in rooms other than the bedroom as they add tons of storage and charactor. I love tone on tone and feel no need to add a pop of color. And just like mixing metals, I love mixing different wood tones. My floors are light maple and my wood furniture is dark to mid toned.

☺️ Also on the matter of creative furniture use, I put a credenza in my bedroom too! It’s my favorite way to display my vintage book collection, and I’m too clumsy with pull out drawers. 😅

Loved so many things, the side cabinet in ur bedroom especially. But..... every room does need a pop of colour.

Thanks! I’m currently looking for dining set. I thought if my cupboards were dark brown I had to have dark brown dining set. Love that I can have lighter wood.

The problem with painting trim a different color is - then how does it transition into the next room? Half of the door trim painted one color in one room and then its painted another color in the adjacent room? Or now does the trim have to be painted that new color throughout the house? you definitely have to think this through before doing it.

It helps to choose another neutral (other than white ) like black, beige, grey

My exact same question. I have a room I would like dark but then the room adjacent doesn't have a clear division so I don't know how to transition one side light and one side dark. I guess I would have to do more research.
