I’ve made a few painting mistakes along my way as I was trying to identify my aesthetic. I painted a wall Whataburger orange, and I painted a wall black, the orange was a huge mistake, but the black was epic. We were having wall to wall, floor to ceiling book cases built in. The wall that they were going to be built in front of was pretty heavily textured, and thinking how awesome it would be to have a black background for books and accessories I painted away, and not long after a friend was visiting and asked if we had put slate on the wall, so I knew then that I had achieved exactly what I wanted to. A few months ago I watched a video on YT of a woman who had painted her bedroom black and she decorated her walls with an odd assortment of wooden picture frames. It was a really beautiful room.

    I get You Rebecca. ❤
I agree with the fact that books can be overwhelming and when you have so many shelves to fill why not turn books into non obtrusive art. You dont need to read the name of the book to appreciate the impact and texture that paper and variations of its tonality can give.
    You do You.

@user-je8we3zs4s Books placed backwards on a shelf is one of the most moronic decor ideas I have ever come across! What is the point? If you don't read, don't fake it. If you want a single colour (white) get wallpaper books. I read all my books and keep the ones that mean something to me. They are not just decor. Sorry to disagree.

I love that you turn your books backward because I like the black lines surrounding the variations of white pages. Thank you so much for sharing this information with so many. I will definitely be able to use this information in my new home because I now have built-ins and a very tall cabinet, which I will have to decorate that I didn't have my my previous home. 1-thank you! This is so helpful. The where. The how. And the WHY!
2-another designer, I think it was Thom Filicia, said the reason he turned books around on his show was that he did not have ‘clearance’ or whatever they needed to show trademarked or copyrighted products on their TV show
3-please, please, please show various styling options for bar carts that are NOT being used as bar carts.
They are mobile, available at all price points, great size for homes and apartments, and - with your styling magic - useful indoors and outdoors (pool toys and towels). I see them in high-end retailers, in consignment shops, and mass merchandisers. There have got to be ways to use them in home offices, craft & sewing rooms, garages, laundry rooms, possibly in a bedroom that’s temporarily pressed into service for guests, bathrooms, etc., etc., etc.,
If anyone can break down how, exactly how, to make this work AND look good, it’s Rebecca!

In my bookshelf/display cases, among the objects I display, the books are carefully edited to a specific color palette. No red, purple, orange that won’t keep the shelves calming and earthy. Those books are kept in a closed cabinet. Sometimes, I have to remove the dust jacket to coordinate. I do get it with the books turned around- it’s a graphic display using books. I can see that!
