I really thought the word you were looking for was Delineate.... but designate was where you were going. Really helpful, insightful and full of practical advice. most appreciated.
Sorry…I picked color first but it was wallpaper and then designed around it. Boreas Midnight by Graham and Brown. Then, instead of BUYING furniture to complement the navy/gold, I reupholstered existing furniture and painted accent pieces with colors from the walls. People are shocked by how custom everything looks. Honey, it is custom and recovering stuff isn’t super hard. FYI, I didn’t completely recover the Chesterfield sofa. It’s white boucle; I just got a big piece of lavender chenille and covered the sides and back. I love it and wish people would rePURPOSE stuff instead of rePURCHASE.
What amazes me more is that most of the shops are full of furniture which already look dated and not even nice and obviously people are buying it. I believe better is to originally invest in furniture you wouldn't be ashamed in a 3-5 years, then you will never want to repurchase
Excellent advice. Especially the last step of not filling the space or ending the process. I’ve never heard that from anyone before but it’s so true. Many years ago I bought a beautiful bowl from the gone but not forgotten Moss store in NYC. It’s beautifully colored with gradient rings going from a brick red out to an ochre yellow. I bought it before I bought anything else for a new apartment and thought it was a crazy thing to do. But you know what? I ended up designing my entire apartment around that bowl and it turned out so well. Lots of the original pieces have come and gone, but that bowl and the color scheme it launched endure to this day.
I’m starting to design my livingroom and I have a vague idea of what I want but can’t quite crystallize it. As I wandered around the room, totally lost, I listened to you. This video is spot on… I left the room with a good roadmap of how to tackle this project… I have a piece of art (fairly expensive) that I don’t really love… poof… it’s gone…same as every other thing in the room that I’m not in love with! What a relief and removing those items has allowed me to have a better vision and not trying to work around them! Thank you!!! ❤
“Just because you like the look of something doesn’t mean it’s right for you and your home.” AMEN! to that! I love seeing unique spaces. I love seeing a well collected space with decor from travels, antiques, thrifted. I love it when a persons home feels like a home that’s lived in and actually reflects their personality. There’s nothing more boring than a home that looks like a furniture catalogue or RH showroom. Those showrooms are stunning. I love the look of them. That doesn’t mean it right for MY home. I personally love my vintage black drip glaze Haeger pottery. I love the weird throw pillow my daughter handmade. I love the dog beds strewn about. I love the mid century sideboard I thrifted in Arkansas 15 years ago. Our homes should reflect our personal style and lifestyle. Also! Can we stop ripping off every closet door to create an open nook? You aren’t wearing that black floppy hat and tan boots everyday. You’re not sitting on that tiny built in bench to put on your shoes. You just created less storage because you’re using what was a closet like it’s a showroom. Where are you storing the weird orange and blue dog leash and sidewalk chalk?
I don’t want a Crate and Barrel or RH home BUT I am saving up for that absolutely huge arched mirror from RH for my living room. It’s going to be beautiful with my vintage, inherited, and some new pieces. My home has been carefully curated over the years and most items have not cost much.
@@GEOMETRICINK people underestimate the power and beauty of a well placed mirror. I have a mirror in every room in my home, making sure it always reflects something beautiful. New mirrors can be very expensive, but one can find them in thrift stores, FB Marketplace, etc., for a fraction of the price. The RH mirror, not so much!
My daughter who is an artist played Simms all the time growing up and I loved that for her. Love that you reference it sometimes! Love your ideas to start with space planning with a favorite central piece and do color later.
I’d love more videos on transitional decor for those of us that own some quality antique or rustic style furniture and oil paintings but also would like to incorporate MCM, abstract style art, and/or more modern style rugs.
Yes!! I love the idea of walking into a space that feels like it could have existed for decades and could continue to exist in upcoming eras without looking stuck in one space in time. Timeless and curated. Kinda like that friend who always looks effortless and chic but still well represented as their own person among all the changing trends.
Custom house build and I chose wall and millwork colors first. I have lived with a soft green wall color (very neutral) for 20+ years and absolutely could not picture living with any other color. Found a more updated version of the color and picked a complementary millwork color (tons of millwork in my house). It came out spectacular and works well with the amount of light I have coming into the house. I carry around my paint chips everywhere I go so when I find an art piece I like I see if it works with my color scheme. I am thrilled with how perfectly everything works together. Furniture and fabrics were easier to decide on that way for me and my designer. Going to take my time finding just the right art work for my house or have it commissioned. Thanks for your great videos!
Commission a piece of art! That’s such a great idea. Plus, you’ll be supporting a small artist. They’ll easily be able to incorporate any colors you want.
I REALLY enjoyed watching your video today. I once owned my own design business BUT haven't practiced my craft in a decade professionally. I am considering building a new home that is a daunting proposition to me now. You gave me confidence that I can pull it off for ME this time instead of others. YOU explained everything perfectly, except for that troublesome word DELINEATE😊
The word you were looking for regarding the carpet is delineate. Totally agree about the art. Art is personal and should reflect your feelings and what gives you comfort
Dear Daddy, When picking a color, you forgot to mention that the chips are always matte, BUT if you get that same color in high-gloss, it will look much more saturated and very different. For exterior paint I made that mistake and should have got a sample to paint like a 2'x4' board to really see the color. In the end, luckily doesn't look that bad, but wish it were a lighter shade. #2, Great examples you pick to illustrate your points. One thing that struck me in the first example, in the way that banquet extends so far past the table. But, what a great idea! This way it is so much easier to get out of the banquet seating; you don't have to both stand and twist to get out from the banquet. If the table corner were rounded, it would be even be better. Somebody was really thinking about practicality with this decision to extend it beyond the end of the table. Technically these are inviting lines that funnel you into and out of that seating. #3, OMG, I love you Daddy. But please Daddy, get a bigger basket/planter for that fake plant. The proportion is disconcerting, like a tiny lamp base with huge shade. It is just weird looking. Please don't hate me. 🥰 #4, As an artist myself, I do not agree that original artwork should match your color scheme. At most you could pick up some of the colors of the room, but a total match would just be banal. Art should be chosen on its individual merit only, NEVER on the degree it goes with your room. 😘 This makes as much sense as choosing plants only to match your décor. I could explain further, but I will spare you.😘 #5, You are getting to be my favorite. Thanks!
Awe thank you so much! Sadly it’s the studio I film in. I honestly hate the plant with a raging passion. I just recently ordered some custom furniture that I plan on setting up in the background so it looks better, and to also switch up how it looks back there. And yes I agree with you on the additional points. I could never hate someone that gives positive feedback 🥰
And my art came first. Everything in the living room was chosen to go with the art. The walls are some shade of innocuous light gray because they're background.
This is very knowledge based and at some points i had to listen to you twice to get what you mean. But what you said about the order to renovate a space is so true. I rented my current home a bit more than a year ago and started with no furniture at all. I started by buying a few chesterfield chairs which I love for so many years, ignoring the scale and everything else. Afterwards, of course by mistake, I started to pick other furniture, artwork, decor items that go well with these chairs. I even moved one of them to the bedroom because of scale problems. Then I chose beddings, curtains, lightings in different rooms that also go well with my chairs (coz the chairs are of different color base as well). And up till now, I still haven’t painted the walls yet. But it’s like exactly what you said, the limitations set by the existing furniture, decor, lighting with the understanding of lights that goes into my flat, I can now easily limit and picture the color that I could use in different rooms. Given that I have zero knowledge and design sense and totally rely on youtubers and Pinterest to inspire me, your advice is the best to give me good and practical direction to work on my space. By the way, i like the way you presented your knowledge and opinions about home design. Please make a lot more videos in the future. i really enjoy watching them.
This was super helpful!! I just moved into a new apartment and found two gorgeous Louis chairs in incredible condition at a consignment store. I’m currently decorating my apartment, starting with the chairs I love so much! I just finished buying the foundational furniture pieces, so now it’s time for rugs!
I have a 6’ x 6’ contemporary painting that I chose as my favorite design concept piece. There are 4 other wrapped canvas paintings by the same artist in adjacent areas of the Bay Area and living room. The paintings act as architectural elements of the home. Thank you for your straight forward verbal comments.
Thank you for speaking the truth. All kf these designers on youtube are so lame talking about what's trending, and they all have the same generic bs. I decorate with items I love and inspire me and it all works out beautifully.
I have a HUGE streamline denim couch (similar shape to the couch at 6:35) that I love. Decorating around this item...,Wow. It was like magic. Everything just clicked before me. I didn't have to think. It was intuitive. This advice amazed me. Thanks, Daddy.
I really appreciate that what you are saying is a personal informed concept about building a space - refreshing to hear new ideas! The only thing that put me off a little bit is how luxe the reference photos are. Feels like design is behind a paywall... which is not actually the case with what you are saying.
I don't think I have ever heard someone (besides myself😊) describe the creating process of designing a home. Some have a picture, a statue or a childhood picture of a place they loved. I for one, used the memory of Half Moon Bay and my memories of that special hotel by the ocean. As inspiration for our last project.
This applies and resonates with other areas of life like listening to music and watching movies and discovering Artists. Once you follow the type of art and design that resonates with you personally instead of jumping on trendy bandwagons is when the art and design is timeless for you although the Swifties and Beliebers may dox you.
As I had a mood board, it was easy to pick my paint colours, which I did first as I needed to feel the rooms. I already knew more or less the pieces I needed and if they were available. Once the paint was done, I brought different objects into the room (rugs, clothes, shopping bags etc) just to see how the colours felt to reinforce my choice. This worked pretty well and I discovered some surprising colour matches for my 10 per cent
Ok that was excellent. 1000 thank yous! I’m going through my dining space now and my inspiration will definitely now be my (still to be chosen) dining table and I will slowly back away from the sample paint guide I picked up.
I had no choice. I am renting. Fortunately the wall color is a very pale blue gray (which I absolutely love) with white trim. My rugs echo the wall color in their colors. My floor is midtone brown wood laminate which brings a lot of warmth to the apartment. This is the first place that I have lived in (I am 68 years old) that shows my personal style: eclectic, biophilic, and maximalist. I have lots of artwork that really resonates with me, plants, and collections. It makes me happy to come home! I walk through the door and after saying "cats I'm home", I think to myself "I love this place". So, even if my paint color was chosen for me first it can work, just saying.
Then that’s all that matters! 🤍🥰🤍 the most important part is that you feel at home. These design “rules” are more catered towards starting fresh with everything. But as long as your coordinating undertones together in pieces you bring into the space than your golden 🙏🏼
@@mrphoenixgrey I do agree that picking the paint color last would be what I would do if I owned a condo or house. Thank you for the great advice. I love your channel.
I love 70s shag rugs that get matted like bubblegum in hair. They go great with my dogs and 7 cats....and the long matted hair hides when they have "accidents"...except for the smell 😉😉😉
I have fitted wardrobes that have a faux white-washed wood effect (not as bad as it sounds) there were quite a few undertones in it, in the end, i got a bunch of neutrals swatches and stuck them on then painted the room in the cream/off-white that just blended into the woodrobe colour, the room feels so harmonious now - though id like to do the trim in a darker colour that picks up on a different tone in the wood.
Lots of solid advice, as always. One thing i could use more guidance on is how to do rugs safely, for both aging in place and mobility (hubs and i are getting older, granddaughter is going blind.) Oh, and just an fyi, i just watched a video on a house in Idaho called Unicorn Farm. The guy who built it was a student of a guy who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and it is amazing. i think you'd love the design, you should check it out. Thanks for another fab video, DD; you never disappoint 🙂
A lot of info in here to unpack DD, going to need a rewatch or two. I sort of think of my design style like stew . . . all sorts of different things together but somehow it works. . . even my french blue couch and chair and medium dark green walls . . .
Yes okay, you told us to pick the color last - however it is far easier to paint a room before getting all the furniture in. Therefore it makes perfect sense to chose the paint first.
I would have to agree, painting first is the easiest. If the rooms big enough putting everything into the middle helps. But all steps should take place more or less at the same time, so even ordering ahead of time knowing what’s going to be in the space before you paint, but I know it can be a pain
It is definitely easier to paint first. But the overall design results of doing so typically will fall short...or create MUCH more work when selecting all your furnishings since you have pigeon-holed yourself.
But that doesn't exclude what he said. First, choose you largest items, like sofa, or rugs, or dining table, etc. It usually takes some time between the order and the delivery (manufacturing/shipment,etc.) When you wait for the items to arrive, you can paint the room while it's still empty😊
I am in a rental and we are not allowed to change the paint color so where should I start? Also my room has things built in that makes using a rug nearly impossible. I’m at a loss of how to plan my living room!
I love the color green. I almost always wear green nail polish, and a green shirt, and I would probably be perfectly happy in an all green living room, since I don't live alone I contain myself and self toa few accent pieces in green like a green quilt folded neatly, but ready to use when someone takes a nap, and a few green cushions on my charcoal colored sofa
Green is always a great choice! Colour drenching is very popular and trendy right now, but when done correctly a space done all in similar hues together can look really sharp! I’m going to add this to my list for a video :)
What's the black paint on the wall behind you called? I like it. I look forward to using black paint (renting, can't now). Bedroom, half bath, lower kitchen cabinets. ❤
Funny how some picked up the words you were using. It shows how well they were listening. You have spectacular talent. Do you also paint or write? I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you so much for these kind words 🥰🤍 I am an artist myself, I haven’t painted in a while since I opened my design firm but my instagram far back enough had some pieces I’ve made. And as for writing, I write for a design magazine on the side as well
I've run afoul of the measuring thing before. Bought a beautiful large old desk for my office. Only fit through the door once my dad took it apart and put it back together inside the apartment 🙈😂

Here is a piece of unsolicited advice: make sure to add the subscription button and links to previous videos posted in your channel to keep audience consumption (at least the last 5-10 secs of each video). The higher your watch time the better the chances the algorithm will recommend your videos to new audiences. You are welcome :)
What do you do when your husband is a carpenter that INSISTS I pick out the paint first ie everyone knows you paint before you put down the floors, why would you go through cleaning paint off of brand new floors?? I get this but 😂 we have a budget and will need to furnish over time. Ive gone through this for the last 20 yrs.
It’s always been a standard to do paint first for the longest time. I get it. I would experiment with one room and not do paint first see if he will compromise and watch how the room comes together differently 🥰
@@AcrylDamehowever, the short period of nice and practical work process in exchange for perhaps long period of regret for the living space that one has to go back to everyday for, at least a year? That simply does not worth it, isn’t it?
Art: check second hand stores for well priced art that speaks to you. Often the art will have lovely frames. Be picky; don't buy a piece because it is a good deal unless you love it.

The advice is good for design students or homeless people that just belongs a home. Most of us already have rugs and furniture and other stuff that is not so much loved but very much needed in a home. To design a home around a piece of art of furniture is not an advice for most. Not saying that your advice shouldn’t exist. Just pointing out that it is unrealistic for most of us.

Delineate* (was probably what was meant), but Designate works too
I love 70s shag rugs that get matted like bubblegum in hair.
Rugs _delineate_ an area. :)
Thank you! Clearly I was having a moment and couldn’t function, just giving up, haha
@@mrphoenixgrey It was a TOTALLY relatable moment!
Good advice- and I’m just embarking on the more important for design, renovation (though it will be minor in a sense).
I’ve always pulled colours from my rugs as a starting point.
"Delineate" may have been the word you were looking for.
That’s it….. lol clearly I could not comprehend the vocabulary 🤣🤣🤣
This is so helpful! Thank you!
You’re so welcome! Thanks for watching 🥰
Thank you so much for watching 🤍🥰 and understood? I feel like I could do a whole video on rugs in general so I’m adding it to my list
@@mrphoenixgrey A whole video on rugs would be *amazing*
Delineate!! LMFAO love this video
A lot of info in here to unpack DD, going to need a rewatch or two. I sort of think of my design style like stew . . . all sorts of different things together but somehow it works. . . even my french blue couch and chair and medium dark green walls . . .
I know, it’s kinda a dry subject but I tried to make it as fun as I could! Haha!
@acrylDame, maybe in theory, but he gives you reasons why it doesn’t make sense IRL.
Although you have tough time spoking 😂 the words you describe really resonate with me and give me assurance. Thank you
I’m so happy! Thanks for watching, haha sometimes I can’t speak 🤣
I am in a rental and we are not allowed to change the paint color so where should I start? Also my room has things built in that makes using a rug nearly impossible. I’m at a loss of how to plan my living room!
Judging by the images you picked, you are really into velvet sofas!!! 🙂
Haha! I do have a personal love for velvet sofas. But now that you mention it, that was pretty much every reference 🤣
Ooo! Thank you~
I love the color green.
My son painted his living room in a dark mossy green and it’s gorgeous. Don’t be scared…it’s only paint.
I have a 20 foot focus wall of Benjamin Moore’s Chrome Green. It’s striking, dramatic and I love it.
😅❤❤ love this young man's video
Deh-lin-e-ate, delineate, marks out space/terms/etc
I was having a moment 😅🤣🤣
DELINEATE, you were so close! 😭
I’m sorry for my ignorance but What are the places suggested to purchase the arts?
What's the black paint on the wall behind you called? I like it. I look forward to using black paint (renting, can't now). Bedroom, half bath, lower kitchen cabinets. ❤
Funny how some picked up the words you were using. It shows how well they were listening. You have spectacular talent. Do you also paint or write? I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you so much for these kind words 🥰🤍 I am an artist myself, I haven’t painted in a while since I opened my design firm but my instagram far back enough had some pieces I’ve made. And as for writing, I write for a design magazine on the side as well
@@mrphoenixgrey who do you write for?
I've run afoul of the measuring thing before. Bought a beautiful large old desk for my office. Only fit through the door once my dad took it apart and put it back together inside the apartment 🙈😂
Hahaha! Oh no! 🤣
Hey! Your videos are good! Here is a piece of unsolicited advice: make sure to add the subscription button and links to previous videos posted in your channel to keep audience consumption (at least the last 5-10 secs of each video). The higher your watch time the better the chances the algorithm will recommend your videos to new audiences. You are welcome :)
You are funny and helpful and I like your videos. :D
Greetings from Germany!
Thanks so much for watching! Glad I can bring some humor in so the video is enjoyable 🥰🥰
I nelieve that "Delineate" is the word you were looking for, but 'designate' worked! Good catch:-)
LOL... I was trying to help you. I was saying, "Designate? Delegate? Delineate?" at the screen (like you could hear me.)
Hahaha! I’m dying 🤣🤣 sometimes I can’t function. Too many words and my brain cannot compute
I start with rugs.
Delineate!
DEFINE
Delineate? :-) great info, thanks
The word you were looking for is delineate (de-LIN-e-ate).
I failed miserably at this one… lol
What do you do when your husband is a carpenter that INSISTS I pick out the paint first ie everyone knows you paint before you put down the floors, why would you go through cleaning paint off of brand new floors??
I get this but 😂 we have a budget and will need to furnish over time. Ive gone through this for the last 20 yrs.
It’s always been a standard to do paint first for the longest time. I get it. I would experiment with one room and not do paint first see if he will compromise and watch how the room comes together differently 🥰
Take away his debit/credit cards, uninstall mobile pay apps from his phone 😎
Having painted a lot of rooms myself I completely agree with your husband. From a practical standpoint painting before furnishing is the way to go.
@@AcrylDamehowever, the short period of nice and practical work process in exchange for perhaps long period of regret for the living space that one has to go back to everyday for, at least a year? That simply does not worth it, isn’t it?
delineate .... ❤😊
I was almost there 🤣
you are .....awesome! heartfelt thank you to you to you and all your team!! 🤗
I wish I had seen this earlier.. one of those who picked my paint and flooring and now stumped😞
9:54 Delineate as in de-Lin-ee-ate
Art: check second hand stores for well priced art that speaks to you. Often the art will have lovely frames. Be picky; don't buy a piece because it is a good deal unless you love it.
Yes! Another important fact right here 🤍 art should always be meaningful
He is adorable
I wanted a large washing machine but had to go smaller when the first one couldn’t get down to the basement. What a disappointment.
Delineate? Maybe that’s the word…😉
Yes! That’s the right now 🫣 clearly it was a long day 🤣
Delineate
❤
Hahaha, delineate
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching 🥰🥰
Delineate?
Besides. Who doesn't like a rug.
Delineate as a word exist! De-line-ate it means the line is drawn visually lol
Are you American?
Sometimes I can’t speak. My unfortunate speak impediment inhibits me sometimes, but yet that’s the word 🫣🫣
And I’m Canadian
It’s ok. You’re still the one and only hung daddy of interior design! 🎉😂🍆 kidding aside, whatever flaws you have makes you unique and you stand out from other interior designer RUclipsrs 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
😅delineate?
He’s giving me fem top vibes
Wouldn’t you like to know 😉
The advice is good for design students or homeless people that just belongs a home. Most of us already have rugs and furniture and other stuff that is not so much loved but very much needed in a home. To design a home around a piece of art of furniture is not an advice for most. Not saying that your advice shouldn’t exist. Just pointing out that it is unrealistic for most of us.
No, you meant to use “delineate” re rugs not designate.
PLEASE transfer the plant behind you into a larger pot. Looks ridiculous.
"A piece needs to resonate with you personally, not just aesthetically." 🫡
Delineate
