In this video I test and demonstrate the all new Black Widow Skin Tone Colored Pencils. Unfortunately for this review I have not completed any art work. I am not a portrait artist and don't think I would do the pencils justice, to try a portrait. I have however demonstrated them on various papers including black paper for opacity and opaque levels.

I noticed a friend using the cobra pencils. Love the fact that they’ve been made to help mental health. It’s wonderful that someone is actively doing something. Thankyou.
I really like how they bring awareness to mental illness. Especially because I have anxiety and depression and my dad is bipolar. I've been wanting to try their line for a long time and would love to have the chance to try them out!

Harry your reviews are also so informative and honest. Keep up the great work. By the way my grandsons and I are getting a lot of mileage out of the faber castell classic colored pencils. I found them on sale at hobby lobby for $1.50 so I bought 4 packs of 24 . They love them and thru are only 3 and 5. They always ask me to put their video of their pencils on when they come over. It is the review you did on those pencils. Ha gotta love the mind and imagination of a child. Please continue to be the honest nice guy you are and maybe just maybe your generator will pick my name and me and my grandsons will have another set of pencils to find joy and delight in. I love the Black Widow pencils, I have all 3 sets and I would be excited to get the skin tones as well. The pencils are so soft and they layer well.
I am very happy that these new pencils have the colour swatch at the end as I always find it difficult to tell the dark colours apart. I hope Albert will do that to the rest of the pencils.
It will also be useful if he would introduce a big set with all the pencils together as I know loads of people have bought all the sets and then took them out of their tins and store them all together in a pencil case.
Oh and I'm also excitedly looking forward for the lightfastness results. I mainly do colouring books but I like to take the coloured pages out and display them on my walls so using colours that don't fade is important to me.

How kind of u to do these giveaways on the black widow pencils. My hobby is watercolor, but I just started getting into colored pencils.. I just received my very first coloring book (mysteria), and I have no clue how to do the skin tones in this book. Putting color to paper has always given me such joy. As a retired RN, I def. need to have hobbies to fill the void that I miss from nursing. May God bless u for doing this..how very nice of u.

I know exactly how you feel about missing nursing, I miss my life in the Army every day, my time was cut very short and against my wishes really, I had no choice because of the injury I sustained, I wasn’t able to fulfil my duties as a front line infantry soldier. You are very much in my thoughts and I am so glad, like me you have found art as a way of trying to fill the void a bit.

Had a similar issue when my colouring group did a challenge to try darker skin tones. People said it was racist, far from it, it was to encourage those who only colour light skin tones to learn and expand their abilities to embrace the beauty in all skin tones. I personally love the fact that this company has made 2 sets giving everyone the ability to learn and create the different colour skin tones that make up the wonderful people of our world and really appreciate the chance to win a set so I might have the chance to learn and broaden my skills in both my colouring and art. Great work that Albert is doing. I used to work in Mental Health so know how important an outlet is. As for the racism: that is so crazy. Glad Albert was able to let it ride over him. I was at school with a well known British athlete, where one of the teachers would call him 'Cocoa' for a nickname. My class mate would just laugh about it as we were all given nicknames.

Once again, Harry, a superb review. As for the end dip, I sure hope that it will happen. And I'd love to see a full 120 or bigger set! Some of the new colors are AWFULLY close to existing pencils. I really LOVE the Browns in the dark tones set. Personally I'd have named these as Portrait sets rather than skin tones. I love some of the unusual colors like the washed Purple for Shadows and of course - Elizabeth Taylor eyes. I've swatched them among the other 3 sets and created a chart based on the CMY color wheel. If I win, I'll be donating these to someone who really loves coloring people, but has significant budget constraints. You will likely get hundreds of people going for this. These are a harder consistency than Prismacolors but a nice creamy consistency and easy to sharpen.

I find skin tones can be tricky with coloured pencil but these pencil sets have an interesting selection of colours, I have Alyona Nickelsen's book, her portraits are beautiful and inspiring.

Fantastic review as always. I have the first three scorpion sets but not these skin ones. Keep up the great reviews, love the broad mix and that it's not just the top-huge-price brands that you review. X
I’m a colouring book “enthusiast” (as you very rightly put it) and I’ve just bought the entire set of BW pencils. Although the skin tones are separate sets, I’ve incorporated them within the rest, rather than keep them separate. That’s because I use a lot of the “beige-y” and “peachy” hues in the colouring books not necessarily for portraits. Talking of neutral tones, I love the choice included, it makes the whole set more complete. If new hues are added in the future, please tell the maker to make sure that all the pencils have the hue names placed just like the skin tones pencils have it: we tend to keep the pencils in pencil cases and the elastic bands cover the name of the hue in the case of the Scorpions. Secondly, could we please have more blues? Thirdly, the pinks tend to look very much alike among the class of hue: pigs Ear, Fancy Pink, Bubble Gum are very similar for example. The formulae will need to be tweaked a bit to differentiate them.
As for the racism comments on the Negra pigment: if that’s racist, then we should change the name of the White pigment, right? Political correctness gone mad, surely.
Lastly, please enter me in the giveaway, I love these pencils.
The color naming is not necessarily racist. However it has historical reference both in just a hue and negativity. the ‘white comment’ is mute and ignorant (uneducated) mainly because ‘white is a name that the people considered white gave to themselves. BIPOC didn’t choose any N**** word. White was never coined to be a negative term. It was a self identification selected by white people to differentiate themselves from what they considered ‘foreigners’ as a means of maintaining class structure. Before people were European, Asian, Italian, Irish and so on based on origin region not color or race. But anyone not impacted by the term should really just stay in their lane when it comes to saying what a group impacted by one thing or another should feel. JMHO not meant to ruffle any feathers or incite hate. Just sharing a little information and background.
I tend to use a light green or light blue for European/Eastern Asian type skins and a dark blue for African or Mid Eastern skins. It's always disappointing to me when skin tone selections don't have these, but then they are aimed at a wider market than me and my habits and I can''t deny their utility. The purple in the Dark set here is a fantastic inclusion and would be really useful for darker skins.
All in all these look like a pretty good selection for skin tones, providing you have a few other colours.
But as with the previous 3 sets, the real reason I want them is because they look so beautiful just as pencils in their own right!

I love drawing faces and always have a hard time pulling out skin colors from other sets. It’s nice to have a range all together and these seem very complete.
As for people making that comment to the maker about the color name on one of the pencils it smacks of ignorance on their part. I love that you showed various examples of the name being used by other companies and as a black person I know that word in various languages simply means black nothing more. Way to try and slanders someone’s character, shame on them!
Thank you so very much for your wonderful comment, if I ever thought for a single second, anyone I done reviews for was racist, contact with them would stop immediately. I am from N Ireland and in Ireland we grew up with a different problem, religion, Protestant and Catholics killing each other. I never growing up as a child witnessed racism and it wasn’t until I was older that I seen racism in all its ugly forms.
I have seen humans kill other fellow humans for pathetic reasons such as skin colour, culture, religious beliefs or sexual preferences. The only people who should suffer or be educated, are the ones who really hate for the reasons I just mentioned. In my time in the Army and living in N Ireland, I seen enough human hate to last me ten lifetimes, skin colour, sexual preference or religious beliefs have absolutely no bearing on who I love, talk to, befriend etc. The man who has created this range of pencils did so in the beginning as a way of helping people with mental health and there is one thing mental health is not and that is racist, we all suffer from it, Mental Health hits us all regardless of skin colour, religion or sexuality. I would love to see racism completely eradicated from the planet, but unfortunately there are far too many narrow minded people for that to work, far too many people not willing to really look at a fellow human of a different skin colour and think, we are all exactly the same, somebody’s son or daughter, somebody’s mother or father somebody’s brother or sister etc. Love and be loved is what I think, we only get one swing at life and to spend so much as one minute feeling hate for any reason is one minute of our precious lives wasted.

I've not tried the Black Widows, but everywhere you look in the colouring community there is a buzz about these pencils. I love the green gold colour, I'd not thought to use that in a portrait, but maybe I should be more adventurous!

Hi, thanks for another useful review. I agree some of the colours don’t seem like skin tones. However, they would be perfect for lipstick, eyeshadows or blushed cheeks. Also some useful hair colours. I doubt that these pencils are aimed at portraits - there are numerous colouring books with ladies faces which these pencils would be ideal for. I think you are at a disadvantage on this one by not wearing make up! I tend to treat these pictures as if I was using make up which I enjoy doing. A lot of the faces are “other worldly” which gives you carte Blanche to use whatever colours you like.

I agree I wish they were in the US very nice pencils they are. Thank you for showing us this review. And there should be no hypocrisy or bias in these pencils. Because I have some pencils named that. They're black and they're kind of name that way and I never saw anything in it. Is nothing against the person who made these pencils. People should not be mean over words. The word only stands for the color it does not make somebody prejudiced. That's sad when people say those things it's not right. Thank you for having to give away. Thanks for the review Harry. I was on a stream where the color name was discussed and the hoopla was because it is dark brown and not black. Where most of the products with this name are black and the fact that it is in a set for skintones...they also thought mud and brown fog were offensive. It was such an inane conversation that I left the stream.

Were the people in the stream saying that both those names were also racist? Don’t get me wrong, as I said in this video, I think racists are the lowest of the low, to hate a person on skin Color is mind boggling to me, but to claim an entire language is racist and expect it to be change as is the case with the word in the video, I believe from good people in the comments it is Spanish for Dark, it is just crazy. @@TheArtGearGuide Really just stupid people equating the meanings of the words mud = brown is dirty and brown fog =again dirty,polluted...really just pulling at straws trying to make it seem racists and again because the set is labeled as skintones...if it were labeled say earthtones none of this would have come up.

Hello Harry , I just want to congratulate you on finding something that helps with your depression. I completley know what you are struggling with. I also draw (graphite and pencil crayon) and create other art in other mediums as a way to de-stress and decrease anxiety. Thank you so much Brooke. I never thought after my injury serving in the British Army that I would be happy again and never in a million years would I have thought art be that route to happiness. But it was and I am so happy for it. I would give anything to still be in the Army doing what I loved or private contracting in War Torn areas, but life has these wee obstacles for us.

Thank you so very much for your wonderful comment, I love hearing from people who find the reviews helpful. I primarily do the reviews to help other artists get a better understanding of what is available. I’ve often looked at a set of pencils on Amazon or EBay and wondered what a certain thing about them is because there is only one or two images of the pencil. But I also get something back from the reviews and that is a social life, albeit an online one. I don’t get out because of my disability and so this is the next best thing for me.

Another great review. I am an aspiring portrait artist and I do use a vivid pink and red sparingly for women with makeup and kids usually have a warmer skin tone. However I would like to see a tone with a cool note in the light set, ie a lavender or blue base in order to shadow and remove the orange.
I was looking forward to the skin tones and think in my mind I expected something different like light up to tanned skin and then deep tan to whatever. I have put them in shade order in each tin so they make sense to me more. I was surprised with some of the names as in the UK the politically correct brigade have brainwashed us to well. They seem to be on par with the other BW pencils and that’s what matters most..ty for addressing the issues in your review very upfront and honest..🥰🥰
