David Lee Roth is one of a kind. His enthusiasm for "rock and roll", performing and life in general is very infectious. Even people who don't care for "rock" music can't help but admire his lust for life. David Lee Roth always partied like a "rock star" from the get-go. I wish I was a guest at one of his parties :-)
Somewhere here is an interview with Martha Quinn speaking about meeting Dave. She laughingly looks back at being young, serious and determined to get to the heart of "Who David Lee Roth REALLY is." All the while she doesn't quite realize that he's driving this interview and she's along for the ride. Watching this now, I can see what she's talking about and I find it very endearing. And Martha remains one of my favorites.
That interview of her is what brought me here. I remember watching this interview when it aired. I was such a huge DLR/VH fan I was so excited to see this.
The thing, among several things, that was great about Dave, and Van Halen, was that nothing was contrived. Nothing he utters here is a put on. He could care less about what others thought - and there were plenty of people back then who didn't care for him at all. "Original" is a word that gets over-used, but he was an original, and as perfect for his time as the Beatles were for their time. Van Halen was perfect for their time. And Martha Quinn was a sharp young lady who was passionate about all the people she interviewed back in the day.
Best used car salesman, and probably overall personality, rock will ever see. Music bios are some of my favorite reading, and David's "Crazy From The Heat" is in it's own league. I'm reading it again, currently (probably approaching my tenth time), and I look forward to the next paragraph as much as I ever did. Best of all, the most fascinating and compelling stories have nothing to do with music.
DLR YOU ARE AAAAWESOME!!! This interview prompted me to commit my first act of teenage rebellion. I grew up in a Baptist Bible family. Rock music and Van Halen were no-no´s. The following day I bought Women and Children First!!!
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. -H.S.T.
There's an interview, I'm pretty sure it was on MTV, where Dave was asked about why Van Halen doesn't get the critical reception that someone like Elvis Costello gets, and Dave's response is something like "Who cares what the critics think? The only reason they like Elvis Costello is because he looks like them!".
Some of thee most intelligent people I have ever meet in my life always seem to have a few loose screws (a bit detached from reality if you will). Not sure how else to sum up David Lee Roth. he's a genius.
Sounds silly but it's also weirdly intelligent (classic DLR, so to say). Historically speaking, the McDonald's empire lasted longer than Alexander the Great's and still rules the actual whole world (fattening, but peacefully).
Like him or hate him. Despite his arrogance and full-of-himselfness, you have to admit he's a smart and eloquent guy. His words are a constant and consistent flow, not a single "like" or "you know" in between. He should coach a few athletes who always forget that they're actually also paid entertainers as soon as they walk of their respective fields, rinks or courts.
Dave's comment about Van Halen's music "spilling all over your turntable and ruining the rest of your records" and how their music has "that combustion to it" backs up my theory that Dave was the reason why the VH records he sang on were so short. Back when Eat 'Em And Smile came out, Steve Vai was on the cover of Guitar Player, I think, for the first time. And the interviewer asked about why the record was so short, and Steve says "We recorded more songs, but Dave wanted this to be the loudest record on the planet", which requires the lathe that cuts the vinyl to cut really deep, and thus, you lose bottom end if a given LP side is longer than circa 15-18 minutes. And that's exactly what happened with all the Van Halen records up to and including 1984: they're all around 32-33 minutes long. And I think Dave had something to do with that, like he was thinking "Van Halen music wilL DESTROY your stereo" or something like that. Notice that 5150 is something like 40 minutes long, which was the standard approx. LP length for that era.
The last line he says about his tomb stone... not looking forward to that day.. "I had this chick banging on my door, she was hollering and banging on my door at 5 or 6 clock in the mornin .. so said Fuck it, and let out of the room!" David Lee Roth.♫♪
It's interesting to compare him to some of the influencers that young men idolize now. 80s kids got the same basic message and inspiration, only with actual talent behind it.
He actually stole that joke from Spike Milligan (British/Irish comedian) of the Goons. And Spike has that line on his tombstone in Gaelic because the local council wouldn't have allowed it in English. Dave was a fan of those 60s British comedy shows.
He is right. All the VanHagar stufd though great, lacks that rawness. Like they did do 50 take and super production and got it all musically perfect , but lost the edge.
Read Greg Renoff's book You'll see Dave, and the whole band actually, in a whole new light. Roth is a shrewd and driven business man and this persona while authentic, was not how he usually behaved. It's well researched and a great read. "The Making of Van Halen". All new material, no rehashing.
Van Halen transcends the musical, it's an attitude more than anything. You're thinking about how you feel when you listen to VH not the notes or the techniques involved. You certainly can listen to it for those things because Ed and Al are so talented, but you primarily listen for the emotional content.
DLR grew up with the mentality that he’s gonna do as he pleases, and do whatever he wants. Most of us don’t have this mentality growing up especially if we have other siblings. Me being the youngest out of 7 kids? I never got my own way. Didn’t grow up spoiled
Is it just me or does he sound like Spicoli or just because you sound like him I love DLR and I love Sammy Hagar and I love Van Halen but if you listen to him talk there's a lot of Spicoli there
Do you need to up your dosage yourself? You're making a real blanket diagnosis for 30 years of you know better? Do you even listen to his lyrics? Me I'm happy still
Seems pretty much the same to me. I think what it is is that at 20 he kinda already had that 50 plus year old mentality where people who don't like you are cordially invited to kiss your ass
Martha is and will always be the best VJ!!❤
Dave in his prime was one of the greatest rock frontmen of all time!
The front man of all frontmen.

Steve Byczek couldn’t have said it better my friend.
mad respect: after the music, he became an EMT

Just watched that before this.
Just watched that interview as well. What a great story!
Never a dull moment in a David Lee Roth interview. Awesome!
Diamond Dave- a total legend!
👌
roth has enough charisma for 10 people, to be that smooth,do a masterclass roth!
He’s an original force of nature. Love the guy!
Brilliant man... one of a kind talent
Free Speech and Fun in 1982.....I remember that concept.

great comment
Love it...very well said, sir!
Roth is a genius who just happened to join a band.
Dave is one of the great characters in music.

"I used to work for a living and I'll never forget it" xD
Notice through every interview he says the same things, consistently. No exaggerations; no lies.
Absolutely one of a kind. Hands down.
Martha Quinn... always classy, and still very beautiful. Loved her. Vastly preferred her, over Jenny McCarthy, or Carmen Electra.
Much of his look came from Jim Dandy Mangrum of Black Oak Arkansas. Of course, Dave took it to another level.
Right on how can you not love david he told the truth he has fun so be it love you dave you the best keep on shining
If you close your eyes, this could have just as easily been an interview with Jeff Spicoli.
Enter pizza...
Martha: Am I hallucinating here, just what in the hell do u think u'r doing?
Dave: Doing an interview. Having some food.
Except Dave is not a bonehead. He’s a genius.
Dude! Let’s Party!🎉
Hey Stu, where’d ya get that jacket?
So true!!
Hotdog time..let's go get a hotdog baby

This guy is fricken hilarious!
Sammy could never do an interview like this.
He’s a riot! The best!
The early 80s was prime Lee Roth time as a front man
There simply is no comparison between Sammy and DLR. Diamond Dave was the man and when he left VH was never the same (as good).
Some of thee most intelligent people I have ever meet in my life always seem to have a few loose screws (a bit detached from reality if you will).
Not sure how else to sum up David Lee Roth. he's a genius.
DLR "I love talking, I love telling jokes for me this is all one big wet t shirt contest, you know . . ." LOL!
"it's my rainbow" lol love it....
We got what you need right here on Dave TV!
"Alexander the Great or the guy who invented McDonalds hamburgers"
Sounds silly but it's also weirdly intelligent (classic DLR, so to say). Historically speaking, the McDonald's empire lasted longer than Alexander the Great's and still rules the actual whole world (fattening, but peacefully).
If it was good enough for Beethoven, it's good enough for me...

DAVID LEE ROTH = ROCK 💪
dave is still in old mtv studios still answering marthas first question lol
DLR was ALL THAT and more! xo
Just a very cool guy and very Smart guy

the man is a force of nature
One of a Kind and Born to Be.
The man is brilliant :)
David Lee Roth has been exactly the same his entire career. You could play this interview now and tell people it was from 2022 and they'd never know.
It's interesting to compare him to some of the influencers that young men idolize now. 80s kids got the same basic message and inspiration, only with actual talent behind it.
Dave has always been his own biggest fan..lol
love me some classic DLR
Best front man ever to grace the stage, sorry Elvis.
DVL is the frontman of van halen.period
DLR is much better than DVL!
Hey folks....have one on me. I told you I didn't feel well.
He actually stole that joke from Spike Milligan (British/Irish comedian) of the Goons. And Spike has that line on his tombstone in Gaelic because the local council wouldn't have allowed it in English. Dave was a fan of those 60s British comedy shows.
Noel Monk was the road manager then selected by the band to be full manager- His Book 📚 Running With the Devil- Great Book
He is right. All the VanHagar stufd though great, lacks that rawness. Like they did do 50 take and super production and got it all musically perfect , but lost the edge.
Rock God.

I mean we all put on masks to some degree and present ourselves as what we want.
He was fucked up but from what I've seen he was totally right. Until you've been on that scary circus ride at the county fair you just don't know :)
So so so good So funny Roth is eternally the man....also he’s cross eyed in this interview
Van Halen transcends the musical, it's an attitude more than anything. You're thinking about how you feel when you listen to VH not the notes or the techniques involved. You certainly can listen to it for those things because Ed and Al are so talented, but you primarily listen for the emotional content.
A weird thing is that I didn't appreciate the emotional content of VH until I reached middle age.
NICE!! LOL!! DAVE T V !! AWESOME!! CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL AT THE TIME!! NOTHING LIKE IT !! THE EYE CANDY DIDN'T HURT!!!
“I don’t feel tardy”
Boss
Never had a problem with listening to himself talk
The DLR.
spicolis half brother !
Jeff even stole some of the lines! Sean Penn modeled his character from Dave.
DLR was a cross between a rock star and an FM DJ
In my opinion, Roth looks MUCH BETTER here-he's got that "rocker" look!
Look at all the people here tonight!
DLR grew up with the mentality that he’s gonna do as he pleases, and do whatever he wants. Most of us don’t have this mentality growing up especially if we have other siblings. Me being the youngest out of 7 kids? I never got my own way. Didn’t grow up spoiled
Love Martha
No music idols? I love DLR but he's obviously influenced by Robert Plant and Mick Jagger
But its david lee roth
That's true!
Classic!
Smoke another one, Dave!
😊🎬great
How did I survive the 80s 🤦🏻♀️
Martha so cute
We’re just gonna ride the rainbow and come back, and maybe somebody’s in the car - ya know! Haha
Is it me or does David Lee sound a lot like Jeff Spicoli? 😎😅
good call Bud and now I cannot unhear it! ;)
He worked out 2 hours a day to get ready to Jump off the Drum 🥁 Riser
He comes up with some pretty good responses for a pothead. Maybe that stuff doesn't destroy the brain. Maybe weed enhances thought.
PS, whatever happened to Martha Quinn? She was a hottie!
Doing this morning 80's show on iHeartRadio now.
Is it just me or does he sound like Spicoli or just because you sound like him I love DLR and I love Sammy Hagar and I love Van Halen but if you listen to him talk there's a lot of Spicoli there
Ive always thought Penn used Dave's personality for that role..and he hired VH for his 18th bday party..
Calm, confident, and happy in his 20s and so nervous in his 40s, 50s, 60s. Usually it's the opposite. I wish Dave would take antidepressants.
Lol Thats like asking Dave to fit into some kind of mold or society. 😂 I can’t stop giggling now…thank you for that! 😂

This guy is a Jeff Spicoli double, to capital T. taken word for word, page for page from Fast Times at Ridgemont high. A total Zero.
Martha quinn: worst interviewer in MtV history
Nevermind she was one of the first! (idiot!)
IWannabeJew who cares she sucks

john coker which isn't really saying much.
Yeah because Pauly Shore was exactly what the world needed right?

Musicians aren't half as interesting as this anymore. What happened? They have no personalities.
I love Sammy , but he can’t say this or do this…
