Debora Ann Eden Accidentally Became A Meme during the Justice 4 Grenfell March, organised after the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
Here, Debora shares the story behind that heavily circulated reaction video.
Today also marks 4 years since the fatal fire in West London. We remember those who lost their lives on that day and everyone impacted.

I wish what happened had spread as quick as the meme. That’s really sad that those people burned literally to death.
It did, it was everywhere but it wasn't big enough of a thing to make it out the country.
@@baba-bv8xz that’s what the person was saying....... a lot of people use the meme all over the world but not many of them know the back story
hopefully know with this video more will know 🙏
It’s kind of frustrating how black people are so often used as memes. It feels like they’re turned into jokes. I know that’s not everyone’s intention, but still.
This!!
So the meme should read: *When a reporter asks, "Why are people so angry?" after 72 lives were lost in a fire caused by shoddy construction.*
That was a sacrifice for the satanist elites
@@JusticeBaruch whoa that maybe makes sense because religious psychos allowed a ferry filled with teenagers to drown in Korea for sacrifice allegedly

Love that she told her story. 2:50 really saddened me because even amidst justified pain black women have to hold back to not be labeled angry black women smh
YES!! I still go through this. We don't get the same leeway as everyone else when it comes to this. I can be happy 99% of the time. But, one incident of anger will automatically get me labeled as "angry black woman". It's so frustrating.
Yep. Women in general. If y’all stand up for yourself or speak up about something, y’all are labeled as a Karen.
@@tjohnson2139 Exactly. But males can get aggressive and no one labels them. This society has issues..
@@kmendo215
Right!
@Rachel Rae , fr, all the black women can relate ! Even when they totally have the right to be angry they can't ! Smh !
can't believe they still haven't gotten justice
I’m genuinely wanting to know what form of justice are they’re looking for? Do they wanted the homes rebuilt or acknowledgement of the ppl who died? I saw her say the number was listed as 72 deaths but I’m sure there were more than 1 person in a few of the apartments so that’s why I asked the second question. What do they want done to make it right? Also, did someone intentionally start that fire?
@@KingKenTM from what I've heard, a criminal investigation can't take place until after the initial inquiry about the fire has been completed. However, after all these years, this inquiry is still ongoing so any legislation (or possibly convictions) regarding the flammable materials used in the construction of the building is outstanding. I believe that many of the victims were also not given access to social housing after the fire. I'm sure the survivors are demanding other things as well.
@@b1ttahpr0phet yes, regarding the last part, they where promised housing/relocation for the time being by the prime minister at the time ( I think Theresa May?) And till now haven't been offered such

She’s from my city and I’m well aware of the grenfell fire, but I honestly had no idea of the origin of this meme. I lowkey feel bad for laughing at this meme now.
She’s such a sweet lady. I’d never guess this was the backstory

I feel so guilty. Using meme of a fellow black woman clearly in pain and stressed due to the death of many..... I feel awful
You didn't know sis, you cant beat yourself up over that. Memes are supposed to be enjoyable, we usually just enjoy them and move on without thinking too mu h about the backstory
You had no context it's alright. Now you know don't beat yourself up
Well look at it this way. The story gets more attention now than it would have if it didn't become a meme sadly enough.
@ MYKEE 3000 the original commenter said fellow black woman which indicates something in common and empathy. As a black woman myself that’s what I understood.🤷🏽♀️💕
@mykee isn’t it brilliant how we can all empathize as we choose? Some of us find similarities to relate (ie black women, short, thin, or what have you) and some don’t. Neither is right or wrong. 💕
a lot of memes of Black people are taken from incredibly painful and antagonizing situations.
Exactly, like Qewnlin Blackwell, one of her most painful moments Is one of the most popular memes.
and that lil mama meme when she talking about her mother dying and the part were she cried was made a meme.
That’s so sick. I think I should pay a little more attention to where these are coming from.

@@Katarina23 for real. I just had the same reaction. No way it has been four years already!
For me she looked like she was in an airport, never would I have imagined the true back story... Very sad but she's inspiring and I'm glad I clicked on this video, I won't use the meme anymore and instead will try to spread awareness on this matter
“They haven't even discussed it, till this day” that broke my heart, cause they never discuss serious issues when the marginalised are the victims.
Love her personality. Very sad story, love her empathy. Lets you know everyone isn’t detached.
Can't believe grenfell was 4 years ago, my life has changed a lot in 4 years and still these people have no justice, nobody has been charged for negligence. I remember that morning so well, I went downstairs to turn the TV on and the first thing I saw was this building on fire, I will never forget that image. This tragedy was toooo much! I don't know why it's so hard to charge someone the person who said "no I don't want fireproof cladding let's go for the cheaper option instead" put that person is prison why is that so hard? They are guilty of mass murder
I remember reading that it would've cost them only £5k to have fireproof cladding. Imagine losing family members to fucking just £5k.
It’s hard because there’s not one person to put in prison, it’s an entire company. And with the way the courts are so pro companies, it’s hard to make anyone liable for corporate manslaughter. They’ll tell you it’s ‘hard to prove’ but tbh it’s because this country doesn’t care about poor ppl. That’s why an illegal cladding was installed in the first place.
@@BBrunnel So right. A condo building partially collapsed a few days ago in Miami, FL, USA and there are about 156 people missing, presumed dead with something like 5 confirmed dead. In 2018, it was reported that there was major concern for the structural integrity of a certain part of the building. The cost of this fix was expected to be somewhere in the millions. It doesn't seem like that issue was addressed and now nearly 200 people are very likely dead. What does it say about our society across the globe when we *consistently* demonstrate that we value saving money over saving human lives?!

This is literally the reason I've never lived in a high rise or tower of condos because my fear of not be able to escape a collapse, like the one that just happened in FL, or because of fire. 2 flats or 3 flats only. Less neighbor's less problems.
The fact that the meme is more known than the story behind it is sad and very telling. That's such a tragic story and most people will probably never know it unless they come across this video. Prayers to everyone who was affected by that awful tragedy. ❤🙏🏾

lol yes!
Pretty horrible circumstances, but probably a good idea for her to let the origin known so that it can bring attention to the tragic background; it seems like it was largely swept under the rug, so bringing attention to it like this is a pretty good idea, not to mention a nonviolent one at that (unlike the ‘riots’ the reporters were trying to paint the younger civilians as)
such a queen, so glad she got to tell the story behind this!! 💖
I always look at memes and wonder their origin now, since these, how did I become a meme, videos have been coming out. This one was quite painful to know that’s where it comes from. 😔
Wow I never knew the history of why. I thought she was American. I thought it was a red carpet event or something. I always wondered where is the original video. The meme is from someone videoing the TV. which is weird. I hope she continues to bring awareness to the injustice at Grenfell.
She’s so sweet. Never knew about the story behind the meme, which is too sad 😢. But at least she keeps a positive energy and her memes gives me life😂😂😂
She carried her self very well, even when being harassed by a news reporter. The story behind this meme is tragic and needs to be told.
So they really did get on her last nerve, so the meme really was labeled correctly.
I’m more inclined to know the origins of the memes I come across, now.
That day I woke up, saw the news and just started crying. It was and still is so sad. I do t believe for 1second that the number put out there for the death toll is correct but either way RIP to all the victims. 🙏🏾

I think this actually happens so often, alotttt of memes come from someone's pain -- from this to Taylor from RHBH to Quen and Lil Mama, and it's interesting to me how someone takes a screenshot of another having a terrible moment and it becomes funny without context. I wanna know the science behind it, truly.

I just saw her in a meme yesterday. I am so glad you took this interview to remind us that the victims of Grenfell still haven't been compensated and owners/officials have not been held accountable.
