I hate movie tie-in covers, but at least when you buy one as a physical book, you know what you're getting going in. What is much worse is when publishers retroactively change the cover of an ebook from the cover it had when I bought and downloaded it to a movie tie-in cover. Right now, my Foundation Trilogy books all have the same abstract cover scheme, except for the first one, which has a tie-in cover from the TV miniseries, which, at least for the first two episodes, covers material from later books. Fortunately, the book covers eventually get changed back whenever a new printing of the physical edition with the original cover or a new cover is issued.
I was once at a lecture held by a prominent book illustrator for Penguin Books, the first thing they said was "if you take nothing else away from this, just remember that faces on the book cover is the greatest sin of all". He elaborated by saying that by showing what the characters look like from a movie or just a particular persons POV, you're robbing the reader to discover that for themselves, they're no longer gonna imagine the characters completely based on their written description and their imagination, because you already robbed them of the chance on the front cover by plastering a preconceived image of the character there to be the first thing anybody sees. Books are all about imagination and a cover artists' job should be to excite that, not steal it instead.
I don't understand how it happened, but I'm so glad the Harry Potter series never go movie covers. Also, as a disclaimer: I don't agree with what the TERF who wrote the series has to say about anything.
