  • The 1996 Toyota HiAce was a cab-over minivan that the USA never got! This is a comprehensive review of this strange minivan with the engine under the passenger seat. We'll go through the exterior, interior, and even the buttons throughout.

We have two imported 100 series Hiaces, a SC and an SCL. Front washer fluid reservoir is by the ingress/egress step on the passenger front (visible at 13:22, you almost touched it), what you showed was the rear washer reservoir at 5:28. Where you said the footrest is on the passenger side for the 2nd row is where the battery resides. These will cruise interstate speeds all day long.

That would be absolutely sick for a cross country road trip

Yes it would! These would be perfect for overlanding.

Nice rig.... I was surprised to learn that it has airbags. SUPER good since you have zero buffer from a head on collision.

The windshield washer fluid goes in the passenger door jam at the step to get in, the one your showed was for the rear washer only.

This was a very detailed and helpful review, so thanks! I’m looking at potentially buying one, but the one I’m looking at is a few hours away. I’m wondering how the fit was with the drivers seat for a taller person? I’m 6’ 1” tall and sometimes the older Tacomas seem a bit cramped for taller drivers. Any feedback on that would be much appreciated!

Thanks, really appreciate it! From what I remember when driving it, I didn't have any height issues, and I'm 6' 1" myself. That said, I feel like I do sit closer to the steering wheel than most people though.

'Rain Gutters' i.e. 'Rust Gutters'. As good as these are for directing rain, which isnt really good at all. They were good for catching dirt and grime where it would lay and ultimately, cause rust.

Very true! I just saw another one that other day, same color! If I remember right, the Toyota Previa that we got in the USA from this generation was also this color.

These were never sold in the US because they didn’t pass our crash test standards.

Only a few changes would be needed to make it legal in the US. This vehicle would absolutely dominate the US market for van lifers and those who want a small reliable RV conversion. The Previa is too small. I will NOT buy a piece of trash Dodge based van. Or Ford. Or Mercedes. This is the only option, which is why I do not currently own a camper van. Toyota seems absolutely clueless as to what the American market wants. Proof of this is that it took 20 years to bring back the Land Cruiser. How can a company this successful be so ridiculously blind?

It is quite the bummer that we never got the HiAce in the USA! This was one of my favorite reviews last year.
