- A man encounters a mysterious cardboard box. I made this film a long time ago. In may ways it is reflection on a culture of observation and fear which still seems relevant today. Let me know what you think it is about in the comments.
Written, directed, and animated by Nirvan Mullick. The film is based on a 1974 Kobo Abe novel called The Box Man. Shot on 35mm, this was my CalArts thesis film; it took me over 3 years to finish. Official Selection Cannes Cinefondation, Winner AFI Fest 2002 Audience Award & Special Jury Prize

Beautifully filmed so much atmosphere , For me it portrays that we fear what we don't understand.
So I saw this film at a film festival in Sarasota made by a young animator. It is so mind blowing good on so many levels I dont know where to begin. And to think that the techonology at the time meant he had to shoot this on film and couldnt even watch it back to see if there were any mistakes. Just leaves me in awe at how amazing it is...
True! I remember that festival! This was shot on a 35mm film camera. I had a video assist "lunchbox", which allowed me to see about 250 frames of the animation, but not through the camera lens. It was difficult, but not as difficult as what Ray Harreyhausen and old school animators did pre-video assist! Now animators have Dragon Frame, which was invented by my friend Jamie Caliri (who was my stop-motion cinematography teacher and helped on this film)!
Nirvan Mullick there is a message behind this like "the one that already has everything he need will always take away from the ones that have less even if for them is important but for him is just an interesting thing,a decoration." ? Or was it made just based on a strange idea?
I agree its good. But i think when you made this comment it was before you went all elsas gate on us.
stan Danny devito
am i the only one who hadnt seen the festival because i probably wasnt even born?
I love this film. I re-watch it every once in a while.
In seeing there is love, in being seen there is abhorrence. One grins, trying to bear the pain of being seen. But not just anyone can be someone who only looks. If the one who is looked at looks back, then the person who was looking becomes the one who is looked at.
Amazing. This is one of these shorts that just make you forget everything while watching it. The atmosphere, lighting and even the sound effects are just so alive! And still with that unique stop motion-twist in every movement. I'm so glad I clicked on this! Very inspiring. As a beginner I have a long way to go before making anything close to this. xD
Incredible work! Such a poignant testament to the times we live in. The lighting and animation are extremely well done in the their own right, but the hallmark of a great film ( or any art ) is when the technique fades away into the backdrop of a narrative that moves you. Thank you for making and sharing this!
Exactly what Sudeep said!
Awesome and mysterious, thrilling to watch. Great piece of work!
So beautiful, erie, and engaging. Honestly the best short film I have ever seen. Incredible.
Jeremy Thrall wow, thanks for the kind words.
Finally, I found it. I've been looking for this for years...
I remember watching this in the 4th grade at inner city arts and I just fell in love with the story. I also want to thank you, because this short story inspired me to become an animator. Btw I'm 21 now and this short still runs through my mind.
That is awesome, thanks! I remember visiting your class via Rueben. So glad to hear from you, and best of luck with your career!
2023👋
this was one of my favourite sections in the novel, awesome, very eerie adaptation
Gunshot at 2:52 is super realistic
hard tight impact and echo
sound is upmixed into DSU in a well tuned HT
video is upscaled to 4K in a very darkened room
excellent
The screenplay is so good it hurts. Thanks for that.
Wow! This masterpiece is worth 1.8 million words for sure! :)
What an awesome piece of film work..made me have goosebumps!!
That shot at 3:34 is amazing. Beautiful work.
Amazing work and the dedication to this project is incredible,
SPOILERS(I guess) Extremely creepy, so great work on generating that kind of response from such a short stop motion flick. I feel it's about the shoot first ask questions later mentality of our culture today. Considering Boxman did nothing to provoke being shot at.
Taziod thanks! love hearing people's reflections.
Taziod , Boxman was watching him...
Excellent animation!!!☻🖤💀🕸🕷
I come back from time to time to see this again and again.
Awesome 👏👏👍👍
i'm a huge Harryhausen fan, and Willis O'Brien, Jim Danforth, et al, from way back when. in the 60s, some rock star said that many of the best bands were the unknown groups playing bars and such. i feel that way about stop-motion animators. this is one of the best.
Astounding film. I'm very happy to be able to see it again. I saw it in Annecy 2003. It is impossible to forget.
This is basically what inspired The BoxTrolls.
Truly phenomenal.
amazing details beautifully done, but a chilling reminder of how we fear what we don't understand.
"Snake?"
Wow just fantastic. You have a gift!!!
Fucking amazing, man
I freaking love this. bravo
All he wanted was a box wow cool stop motion
Lovely! Lighting was awesome. Thanks for sharing on reddit :)
That painting on the wall reminds me of “young modern” album by Silverchair
Quite enjoyable, thanks for that
Great short and loved the animation
Amazing movie, you really grabbed stop-motion by its horns!
Alice In Chains - Man In The Box
Emma Nunn haha funny
yooo can we appreciate how he made this in STOP MOTION? do you even know how long it is just to make a 30 second video of a stop motion?
wow he made a huuuge effort on this vid!
The body smooth body movement really conveyed the Trench coat man's thoughts.
That was awesome! I love this kind of stuff since you see people real art talent in the way they make there props and not VFX. And the story was great. I love none voiced work since it leave's speculation to the mind of what the person is thinking. If you make another out could you do a sort of behind the scene's type thing. I would love to see some of the props and how this stuff is made.
Kelo60 thanks. There is some storyboards and background here: www.nirvan.com/theboxman/faq
You are a great filmmaker!
I want to make a metal gear joke but .. I can't come up with one.
Fantastic! I hope you can keep making more like it.
Really good, I love it, thank you :)
Wow, what a great job! I read the book decades ago, this has inspired me to re-read it.
Great piece of Art, hopefully i'll see some more in the future subbed.
Don Soprano thanks!
Incredible
I remember watching this as a kid and getting traumatized
How in the hell did you make all those brick walls?! It's taking me FOREVER to make one
I sculpted them out of a high density foam. It took forever. I'd just broken up with my girlfriend, which is the secret trick.
Its so smooth it doesn’t look like stop motion
There should be a part two to this
2:15 i goign to rewatch like 100 times.. and still amazed by how close to human movement... its very beautiful... ( cont to watch )
This is a awesome stop motion. Hope to see some more work in the future
Really, really good man. Love the grey tones.
Oh, excellent work! :)
Very well made. +1 like
Great little film, love the sets too, really realistic! I'm planning on making a film with similar sets but I want to know the best way of getting realistic brick work and ground cover like this. Really enjoyed it!
This is excellent, atmospheric and well animated.
I carved all of the bricks by hand from high density foam. The foam that the puppet had to walk on was an even higher density. I don't remember the density weights anymore, but I did a lot of testing to make sure that the ground covering could handle the puppet's tie downs without too much flexing. The thin sheets of foam were glued to wood frames. After sculpting, I then painted the walls, and used various finishes to make them look wet. Good luck with your project!
Whoa good job it's awesome
"le Samouraï" from Melville. I like the ambiance of this short Film noir 😀
Great Video
Incredible; beautiful
I really enjoyed that! :)
this is fantastic.
this is very creative. love it!
This is why you always go for a headshot when sniping!

OK I KNOW R/WOOOOOSH
Great work, I love it!
Oh god! It is Jack the Ripper!
To me it feels like Edgar Allan Poe meets Alfred Hitchcock. It's fantastic!
Cool. Kinda like Adam Jones stuff. Like it!
please start posting more on your channel
This is so good! It's about fear of the unknown, isn't it?
I love it. Unbelievable that you carved everyone of those brick walls. Did you build several bricks and sticked them together or did you carved them out of a wall?
The walls are wood, covered in sheets of quarter inch high density foam. The bricks were carved into the foam, and then painted. The walls were built in sections so they can be re-used. In the opening shot, all of the walls are being used, and when the camera pans across the light poll, the walls are re-set and used again to make the space feel even bigger. The sidewalk and the cobblestone streets are carved from an even higher density foam.
Strange and haunting though Im not sure what to make of the story. For me a very ambiguous tale but beautifully done.
So glad you said this because I feel exactly the same. Amazing production -- and it was -- never makes up for an esoteric message.
Great film,very real like!
omg I love this
this is amazing its so nice like a real person i have a question where can i find wals like that i mean outside these stone wals
Wow, that was very good. And it was shot on film? Fantastic. Is there a HD version of it?
very amazing animation
this is a really great video. I watch it all the time. Have you made any other stop motion videos or short films?
Wow! I loved this l, really well done! Astounding atmosphere. Genuinely curious, while making this would you say you enjoyed creating it throughout or did it seem a bit tedious at times? I can't imagine the patience required for it
Tedious at times, but glad to have seen it through. Most of the process I really enjoyed, there was just too much to do at times and not enough studio time.
very good
Pretty good man
Great film
That was fantastic:D
I concur!
Great ending
this is awesome
Nirvan, great! What a talent u have! I knew about u when u helped Caine's Arcade to be promoted. I'm from Barcelona and I dream on a kids-entrepreneur planete with values! Could u help us? Now I see you continued with a Fundation? World has a hope. Let's make it real. Many thnx. Cris.
I love this
Cool
well done
Cool vid
This is great i love it i do stop motion my self
very good, really enjoyed it - very poignant, what with current events in South Africa (Oscar Pistorious trial). Really made me think...
creepy but really cool!
brilliant
Nice! Very smooth animation, good job man.
Any reason you included the kanji on the wall? 箱男 - i mean I know it's supposed to translate to "boxman", and there's a Japanese novel with that name. But it seemed strange to have a sign in any language, might be better without anything so there's no reference to where this film is supposed to be located. Still, awesome short, thanks for sharing.
I'm aware that Japanese uses Kanji, but in reality, the characters are originally Chinese. Perhaps he chose Chinese because of the constant state of fear Americans are in over the whole 'Rising China' events going on now, with China threatening to become as powerful and dominant as the U.S.
I know for sure that's something that a lot of American news stations and talk shows like to talk about. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the 'culture of fear' the artist is talking about.
Starman Deluxe that's a good point, and maybe what he wanted to convey. I just like the idea of a more broad view of the world living in fear, without hinting at any identity or country (whether China or Japan etc).
shoganai Starman Deluxe these are among the most intelligent comments I have ever seen on RUclips. Cheers to you both. For the record, I still have that miniature sign, which I made into a refrigerator magnet, and is on my door (which is made of metal). You can't see it clearly due to the RUclips resolution, but the sign also reads: "HIKIOMORI SOY SAUCE"
I can also add that the film was inspired by the 1974 Kobo Abe novel, Hoko Otoko (The Box Man).
***** thanks for the reply. And really thanks for your creativity, it's great to see original content like this on RUclips. I sincerely hope you continue working on stuff like this. 10/10 would watch again etc ;-) Cheers!
good video
gracias por joderme una de las cosas que me gustan, las cajas :'v
de igual modo se hizo un gran trabajo en este cortometraje
is it based on a book wich I forget the title that is about a man who goes crazy by isolating himself of the rest of the world by hiding in a box?
I believe you are referring to a book called The Box Man, by Kobo Abe. If so, I was indeed wondering the same thing. It's one of my favorites.
Edit: Now looking at the credits, I see that it was.
Luke D yes! you are right! that`s the name of the book.
Yup, if I remember correctly, the was a short section of the book called the Case of "A" - which was the inspiration for this short. I read it in college as an undergrad, and was still thinking about it when I started CalArts.
what does it mean?
There's something really deep here right? i'm confused. the movie itself is fantastic though. I've thought more about it than any feature length movie.
