  • 10 minute stop-motion piece which I shot in the summer of 2009, using space and equipment kindly leased to me by The Engine Room, Bridgwater.
The sound was put together by Matt Loveridge, and the direction, animation and editing was done by myself, Barnaby Dixon.

I'm speechless. This is a terribly underrated youtuber but I'm not entirely sure whether I want him to go too much mainstream or not. The first video i saw was one of Dabchick's and obviously loved it immediately but every next video I watch surprises me with his unlimited and diverse talent even more. He has an amazing sense of humor: naughty, dark or childishly funny'; Although some of the videos are deep and emotional life experiences; his puppets are amazingly made and the movements he creates are so lifelike it's unbelievable; he's an amazing narrator with deep voice and an amazing singer with soft soothing one. And after all this the only thing I was not expecting was this creepy, dark side of Barnaby to exist. And I love it so much. The motion, the light, the sound, the puppets and the vibe, atmosphere is so good.
Gosh :D I went on for too long but anyway, I wish this guy all the best, he deserves world.

I have never wanted a stop animated robot bird to die more than I did watching that. That bar is set pretty low. I think it is the first stop animated robot bird I've come across. But I wanted it to die. The simplicity of the story had my imagination reeling as to what else was going on in this world. I felt like the dry aging of the fish or whatever they were doing was really important to their survival. And that maybe "life" has become a very rare thing in this world. The partner knew that and thought the bird was precious because of how rare it was, just being a living creature. He doesn't have the same empathy for fish. They live in an unknown world that they can't go to. But a bird is up there with them. The butcher knew their would be consequences to letting it live. The consequences were greater than he thought. As a butcher, he needed his hands. I could write a whole essay on the world that developed in my head. Beautiful video. I dunno why exactly, but this really struck a chord with me.

The bird movement was consistently great and there some really stand out moments with the 'humans' as well, particularly whenever you had them kneeling or laying about. Essentially anything that isolated the upper body looked gorgeous- like when bird hater returns from the pillaged fish room and just puts his head in his hands. The feet on the men felt just a teensy bit unstable or at least compared to how gorgeously fluid that bird moved. Several really nice cut/transition sequences in there as well (Door swinging open shut open shut, fish bag 'falling on the camera'). Anyway Im fuckin jealous. I wish i had talent.

As obscure as this reference might be, what comes to my mind while watching this is the ‘postlude’ part of the memoirs* (p.245+) of the wife of a certain theologian (‘From time to time’ by Hannah Tillich), where there is this apparently metaphorical conversation btw her and a shopkeeper in a store full of puppets which represent certain phases of her life before the shopkeeper guides her to a mysterious door somewhat representing a different phase of her life, before she disappears by the time he finishes explaining it; a part of me feels bold enough to say that if I ‘had uber-cash to spare’ I’d commission Barnaby to do an animated take from that book.
*she would still live for ~15+ years after that book came out during the early 70’s
*This* sssoo corresponds to the kind of cryptic-ness I felt from that melancholically puzzling memoir. The only other kinds of animation which could ‘match’ to that part of that book in my mind would be something experimental and ‘dark’ entries from the ‘National film board of Canada’ or when ‘Final fantasy’ series illustrator Yoshitaka Amano worked on ‘Angel egg’.

    The story:
What I like to call the characters:
    •Eskos the flying bird thing
•Hater, the worker who hates Eskos
•Admirer, the one who is merciful
Okay, so it all starts off when Hater and Admirer arrive to work, doing their daily routine. Hater is first to come in, and gets all of the fish ready to do the butchering. They apparently both sell it, but Admirer and Hater have a big problem. Eskos. Eskosmseems to thrive on fish, and of course, the easiest place to get it is Admirer and Hater's factory. Admirer arrives, and is ready to set up. When he is finished, Hater removes the wrapping from the fish, but it releases a loud screech. Hater and Admirer are both very sensitive to sound, most likely because of the metal on the back of their heads, and body. Hater quickly kills it, and both set to work. Unfortunately, Eskos hears the screech, and quickly flies over, expecting a nice meal. He lands on the roof, expecting it to be there, but instead, he finds nothing. Using a special call that may lure in fish, he sits on the roof and waits. Hater gets angry when he hears the calling, for he cannot work in such noise. He also cannot risk Eskos getting in and eating the rare fish again. Grabbing a gun, he gets ready to shoot Eskos, who is unaware. Admirer, fearing for Eskos life, makes a loud bang on the metal, making Eskos fly away and Hater dizzy. Hater gets mad, and throws the hatchet on the ground, leaving Admirer to do all the work himself. Admirer sits in silence as he finishes, and then leaves for home. Eskos, remembering the bang, flies back to the factory, and finds a way in. He falls, stunned, and stands up in the unfamiliar room. Then, smelling his meal, goes into the back room to feast. Eskos eventually finishes all of it, and falls asleep under the wrapping, most likely because of the cold. The next day, Admirer is first to show up, and notices the broken chimney. Cursing to himself that he didn't let Hater kill Eskos, he ignores it until he hears Eskos inside the freezer. Arming himself, knowing he is a wild animal, he goes inside, gun pointed. Nothing is there, except all of the frozen fish's guts spilled all over the floor, including blood. Admirer, you knowing he is merciful, begins to get sick, and steps out, cursing himself again at the table. He knows Hater is going to be angry. Hater arrives, seeing Admirer, confused as on why he is upset. He then finds out when he steps into the freezer. Getting mad at Admirer for not letting him kill Eskos, he throws a fish head at the wall, waking Eskos. Eskos suprises Hater, and hides while Hater reaches for the gun. Eskos distracts him, and runs out. Admirer, also fueled by rage, traps Eskos succesfully. Hater is about to shoot him when he notices ammo is gone. Reaching for a spear, Admirer stops him from killing the innocent Eskos. Hater, raging, knocks Admirer out, and goes for Eskos. He is so deeply in rage to get Eskos, he slips off, dropping the hatchet, causing him to lose his hand. Eskos escapes through the hole in the ceiling, and Hater's dripping blood wakes Admirer. Admirer is shocked, wondering if Eskos did this. He helps Hater, and they both head home. Before going though, Admirer looks around the room, looking at the damage Eskos did once again. Will he ever kill Eskos, to keep the business going? Or will he keep him alive, out of the goodness of his heart?
    Hope you liked it! 😊😊😊

Hmm, bear with me, but I'm going to try and offer my own interpretation. I don't mean to imply that other interpretations are invalid, or that there is any singular right way to interpret it, I merely see it this way.
The bird represents the problems in life. The bird, while annoying, is easily deterred by a simple, nonviolent method. While this is not a permanent solution, it is effective nonetheless. This represents how even if life has those permanent, nagging problems, they can always be solved. But the first automaton wants to kill the bird, a permanent and relatively extreme solution.
The problem bird then comes back late at night, possibly angered by the threats of violence. It then proceeds to destroy the automatons' food supply, which represents life. This shows how violence can only lead to worse violence. This is further demonstrated in the battle between the automatons and the bird. The first automaton insists on using violence, which only ends up causing his friend to get hurt, and for his hand to be severed, while the bird escapes.
Ultimately, this film represents how solving problems with violence will only lead to harm upon those that deal damage to others in the first place.
I encourage others to commentate, critique and offer their own interpretations. Overall, I believe this a wonderful animation with a unique aesthetic and tone, and that more people should witness its uncanny beauty.

    • @zacvancastle.
      @zacvancastle. 6 лет назад +52

I like your interpretation, but I would like to comment about it - always in a constructive way.
Let's take the bird as the problems in life. The first automaton decides to take action and solve the problem, while the second one prefers to go for a temporary and useless solution. The bird does not come back to destroy the humans supply, but for the same reason that it came on the first time: food. The bird comes back for feeding, so the temporary solution only postponed the problem, which will come back in the future in an inappropriate moment to deal with it.
Still, they will have to face the problem once again, after getting more complex than it was, since now aside from it, the lost they food as well. So the firs automaton decides to deal with the problem while the second one decides to again, be passive and search for a temporary solution. It leads to a conflict, and as a snowball, the problem not only does not disappear, but it creates new problems. It goes so far that it lead to real injuries that might no be possible to solve. Yet the main problem, still not resolve, and it might come back again.
So from this point of view, the film represents how not dealing with the problems in an appropriate way, facing them and do what it needs to be done, will end up harming yourself and others. I don't take the fact of shooting the bird as a radical action or a violent one, but as a hard thing to do, like breaking up with someone, or go to the doctor to check that strange black dot on your arm.
About the animation, is really awesome!

Really just a fantastic job all around, and a huge inspiration to boot. This deserves way more love than is has.
Side note: The camera focus changes (like the ones that occur at 2:52 and 6:57) are really cool effects that must be pretty tricky to pull off in stop motion (if that even is how this is animated). How did you do it?
