    Guess what? Not everyone in the fitness industry is on steroids, nor is everyone simply out to make the most money possible.
    Just because you got burned doesn't mean that everyone making progress in the gym or anyone bigger than you is on something.
    Some are. Some aren't. And if your standards are low, you're going to be wrong a LOT of the time.
    These types of videos really do a lot of damage. It's OK to be skeptical (even of me) but it's very easy for the skepticism to cross into cynicism and low standards. These types of echo chambers such as the "natty or juice" section on Reddit will ABSOLUTELY limit your progress as a beginner. I can't imagine where I'd be if I had stumbled across that type of content as a beginner lifter...I probably would have given up, or thought that 16" arms were my limit.
    I actually agree with a lot of Revival's points, and if I had to decide if someone was natural or not, many of them are solid metrics. But so often people see a picture or video, often under good lighting, when lean, with a pump, and flexing, and decide IN ADVANCE of using any other metrics that they are not natural. They then try to reverse engineer the "carefully thought out system" to explain their emotional beliefs.
    Oh, he doesn't have a strong 1 rep max on the lifts I do!
    Oh, he does more volume/intensity/frequency than me, how does he recover?
    Did you ever consider that those two statements EXPLAIN each other? But no, it's right to "Must be on drugs!"
    Ultimately, Revival has plausible deniability here, but he's made his opinion known in the comment section several times.
    I don't care whether you think I am natural, but I do care about the pathetic blackpilled messaging that keeps anyone watching your videos small, and smallminded.

      If you colorize half of those bronze era people and upload a cropped photo, almost everyone will say that person isn't natty. I once saw a post where people were absolutely certain that Luisita Leers wasn't natural not realizing that would have been impossible. People are just so convinced everyone is on gear, and I don't understand why.

    I think there's value in fitness content coming from people at all different stages in their journey - even if its something as simple as the encouragement for a newbie that comes from watching another newbie make the same journey - but its worth being more conscious about whether this particular person is the best source for what you're looking for
    And as pretty young intermediate bodybuilder - without either education or extensive "on the ground" experience - maybe RF isn't the one people should be looking to for high level programming advice or insight into what is or isn't possible in the long run

    17:30 This is SUCH a relevant point.
    I remember beefing with Revival Fitness in the comments section of one of his videos. He was all but calling you a fake natty in the comments, so I pushed back on that.
    He said you had every incentive to grow your outreach as big as possible. I pointed out the fact that your channel only had ~130k subs, and that Revival was speaking as if you weren’t a very niche fitness influencer to begin with. I also pointed out that your actions really didn’t align with why fake natties take drugs to begin with, which is a motive to commodify and extract as much money from their image as possible. If GVS were interested in growing his outreach first and foremost, don’t you think he would make drama videos, clickbait his natty status, do collabs with other normie fitness influencers, make vlog content, take every sponsorship and brand deal under the sun, and of course, make natty or not videos? Is GVS the *one* fake natty who doesn’t act like every other fake natty in history? Or is GVS indeed natural and looking out for the best interest of the natural lifting community? Of course, when I brought all this up to Revival, he never responded lmao. Goes to show you where this guy’s priorities are. I wonder why he won’t just call Alex Leonidas or Natural Hypertrophy fake natties as well. I guess going after Alex would make him look terrible, and he doesn’t want to get sent to the shadow realm by the baguette man once again.

    RF is unfortunately a big bag of cope who very clearly projects a lot of his own feelings of failure and insecurity onto others in the industry to somehow justify his own lack of knowledge, experience, and progress. The guy creates an echo chamber in the comments of his videos & promotes bullying of any dissenting views of what he says. He should focus on keeping an open mind to keep learning something new every day from those like GVS, NH, Basement Bodybuilding, myself, and many others who have been doing this longer than him and are more successful than him, instead of trying to paint everyone else as bad, wrong, or as a fake natty if they’ve done better than him in the gym personally and/or professionally.
    Great response Geof, think you handled it well & the points made were very reasonable and helpful to your viewers. Wishing RF all the best, & still hoping he can find his way back one day from the “dark side” of the fitness industry.

    GVS - I don't know your status but it's about Bayesian priors and inference to the best explanation. The probability that a "fitness influencer" is on gear has to be the default one. Think about it. If one by default assumes that these influencers are natty, probabilistically you will be wrong more times than correct. The inverse assumption will be correct more times than it is wrong. Appreciate if you are natty and it annoys you folks suggesting otherwise but as one of the more intelligent people in this space I am sure you can understand the basic reasoning I have outlined. Btw your books etc are really good.

    • @GVS
      @GVS  5 месяцев назад +2

      "While in Bayesian statistics the prior probability is used to represent initial beliefs about an uncertain parameter"
      As for as I can tell...initial. Not final. This is why if someone who knows nothing about me sees one video and assumes I'm on something, I don't really mind that.
      However, when someone who has known about my training history, knowledge, consistency, lack of side effects, reasonable progression, etc etc for years still assumes that, it is a lot less excusable. If you take into account ALL of the factors and look at them, it shifts the likelihood a lot. Vitruvian physique did a good video on this highlighting the additional information that is helpful in assigning likelihood of natural status.
      Ultimately, the assumption that everyone is on is heavyhanded, wrong and limiting. We can be more nuanced than an assumption of 100% guilt.

    Currently I'm training at home but, when I went to the gym (medium-sized), I mogged most people there after only a few months, with the exception of ~5-8 veterans. Then again, I started as an adult, at 36, and had plenty of blubber (124 kg at the start, 100 kg ~10 months later) to fuel my newbie gains, plus I was always fairly strong. That said, not only am I natty, my T levels easily place me in the hypogonadism category (I'm talking fifteen/seven times less than normal levels; thankfully I've mostly avoided the really bad side-effects, presumably because I respond very well to what little I do have). My only real advantage is that I can train to my heart's content, since I took 1-2 years off from any serious work commitments in order to build my physique.
    From this, I conclude that most people either don't know how to train properly, don't put in serious effort, or both.
    Also, while I was highly interested in TRT to get back to a non-defective state, I've since decided against it. There are some low-T mental issues that still slightly bother me, but they've lessened a lot after nearly a year of lifting - it's even possible my T levels have slowly improved, though it might just be general better fitness/health. Regardless, I LIKE the idea that I'm at a disadvantage. Let the rest play on easy mode, I've always enjoyed the challenge of playing on hard difficulty. Plus, it makes my PRs and physique achievements all the sweeter.

      Turns out training regularly over a long period of time heals your body and promotes hormonal recovery.

    The vast majority of people who are worrying about the natural limit have no reason to. If you have your training, diet, stress management and sleep in order, you can achieve any goal within reason. It really only matters if you want to become a (natural) bodybuilding champion. But then you will also know, if you are an outlier. When Urs Kalecinski, Wesley Vissers and Cbum posted their peak natty pics, I believed them and still do. Spit the black pill out and go hard. And test levels and age are also overrated.

    • @zerrodefex

      Yeah if you're not even competing with anyone beside your past self then why the stressing out over a "natty limit"? Just like how I'm not going to get on a platform and powerlift for a crowd so I don't care if my strength is currently behind some arbitrary standards as long as my health and physique are still improving. As for test levels that's only one part of the equation as well, your actual sensitivity to testosterone matters greatly and is why we see many "low-T" people who still get better results than many who have high T levels even.

    I think Natty or Nots were the biggest reason back in the day (and even now) why natural lifters have such low standards of themselves. Guys like Doucette, Phillion etc. making generalist statements like "YOU CAN NEVER ACHIEVE" etc. I think the Noble Natties have done a good job in upping the standards of what you can do, but there'll always be guys like this who think being natural = being weak and skinny.

      Greg has impossibly low standards for the average person and I find it incredibly irritating. The genetics claim has no explanatory power.
      These people aren’t geneticists and there’s no identifiable gene sequence which is responsible for an individuals potential. There’s a plethora of Comorbid factors that each contribute to an individuals baseline, potential and rate of progression which can’t be gleaned by observation alone. The best approximation from that standpoint is garnered from evaluating a persons frame.
      It’s all reverse engineered through observing the general population, which do not know appropriate programming/periodization, dietary practices or often possess the motivation to achieve greater goals.
      The genetics argument can be applied fallaciously to any discipline, and needlessly rejects the massive role environment plays. It’s bizarrely deterministic without the framework to justify it.

    • @nicksmith4244
      @nicksmith4244 5 месяцев назад +5

      And the average person can become extraordinary through effort. Heck, even below average people can become extraordinary relative to the average person because most people don’t try very hard.
      This applies to nearly everything like intelligence. Perhaps you don’t have the raw processing power of someone gifted at learning, but through hard work you can overcome the disparity and often surpass them. Many gifted people never learn to overcome adversity which cripples their development later in life.

    • @nicksmith4244
      @nicksmith4244 5 месяцев назад +1

      I also have to add that the expression of one’s genes can change over the course of their life based on how they interact with their environment. For some reason epigenetics aren’t ever considered in this discussion. I don’t imagine that it has a very substantial impact but “genetics” aren’t some static monolith.

For example I never had to learn how to study and when I got to classes that actually started challenging me I got overwhelmed as I could no longer just effortlessly absorb the info and ace tests while those who had struggled for years and learned how to study properly to keep up ended up blowing by me. It was some time before I recovered from that and learned how to actually apply myself properly, some never do and are just bitter that they "peaked" so early in life.

You can and should get stronger while cutting, if you are starting at a BF% higher than 15-20%+, and you are actually working hard. TBH, I think his bodybuilding thing has skewed his logic, thinking that hard/large cuts, over short time frames, makes his rule "universal". Maybe if you are dropping below 10% (unhealthy), and getting PRs, sure, but the *blanket statement that hitting PRs while cutting is a sign of roids is just flat out wrong. And that's before I get into the entire psychological/logistical aspects of using roids. I mean who takes roids while on a cut? Isn't the entire premise of using is to "get bigger"? If you are in a deficit, seems like a waste of time and money to be "on" in that scenario, so logistically, that don't even make sense. I know we are surrounded by boneheads, but still that's a pretty dubious claim to make when its generally goes against the intended purpose of roids..
