I'm 67 and used to watch Tom Jones' own TV show in England, where I moved with my mom and siblings at age 7 and lived for 11 years. Tom Jones's show was of course LONG before he became a regular on the UK version of The Voice, which I have seen only online. I've long known of the Sullivan show but it wasn't shown in England. (Sullivan hosted the show, originally called Talk of the Town, and made it so famous over the years and that was renamed for him. Though it was aired after my usual bedtime I seem to recall seeing it once or twice it in my early, pre-England childhood; Sullivan sometimes appeared with a mouse puppet named Topo Gigio) Lately I've been getting really nostalgic about the pop music from my childhood and teens and reminiscing about the UK (Jones is from Wales.) Fantastic stuff. Thanks to you and to everyone else who makes these reaction videos. Tom can still sing like that but in his 80s no longer does those dance moves (Go figure 😉)
Saw the compilation of the Ed Sullivan Show when The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Jackson 5, among others were on the show performing their songs.
Tom was 25 here, new kid on the block, and one of his earliest performances on American TV. He's now 80 and 'Growing Old' [his latest release]. Yes, Ed Sullivan Show was a Sunday night staple and he had everybody past and present and those tagged for future stardom on it. Nothing like it today. Within three years Tom would be in a tux holding his own against Sinatra, Elvis, and all comers. LOL
Classic joke; heard it on TV (told by the late comedian-magician Tommy Cooper, I seem to recall; or maybe it was Eric Morcambe of Morcambe and Wise) when I lived in England as a kid. (Tried explaining it this year to a 20-something-year-old co-worker who'd never heard of Jones or his music and she was right; jokes aren't funny if they have to be explained:😒) It still gets laughs. as you probably know, from those who DO know of Tom and the song.
I’m approaching 60. I watch The Ed Sullivan Show. I watched The Tom Jones Show. I was very young. However, my sister and I would accompany my mother to live performances/concerts of entertainers like Elvis (2Xs), Tom Jones (3+ times...my mom LOVES this man), Engelbert Humperdinck...it was always amazing. I love the music of the 70s. In fact I’m still stuck there. I love what you’re doing Billy, keep it up.
"The SIGH OF RELIEF that SWEPT through the diner... And on the other hand... When we went BACK... Holy shit. It's Not Unusual fades out... It's dead quiet... ... 'BWAHN! WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT!!' Everyone went fucking insane!" Props if you remember that stand up. If not, just look up the salt and pepper diner what's new pussycat.
Ahh Sir Tom of Jones. As a fellow Welsh person I feel it is my duty to support this! Never heard of the Ed Sullivan show but since I wasn't born in US or around for another 24 years lol
Visited Cardiff in the 1990s with my wife, whose maiden name is Jones, on one of our visits to the UK, where I grew up. We're both Tom Jones fans. (I was born in the US and returned here in 1975 but as a kid lived in England for 11 years during the "British Invasion." Used to watch Tom's TV show in the late 1960s but am only now fully appreciating his music (and that of his peers from that era such as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, etc.) Do you remember the Irish ballad crooner Val Doonican? I remember a comedic spot on his TV show in the late 1960s in which the orchestra played the opening to "It's Not Unusual" and Doonican moved his arms a bit, as a joke, but then stopped completely (as did the music), telling the audience "I'm not a raver!"
Tom Jones just had the ability to knock it out of the park....possibly the best voice ever, coupled with the charisma....powerhouse...ya, use to watch the Tom Jones Show....great time in tv entertainment...
I came upon earth a few years at the end of the Ed Sullivan show run, but still watched reruns, and my mom and aunt were infatuated with Tom, so I grew up listening to him and seeing him on tv all of the time on other shows.
Yes, anyone who was alive back then considered it a weekly ritual on Sunday nights to sit down in front of the TV and turn on CBS to watch The Ed Sullivan Show. All the greatest acts appeared on the show. It's where America first saw The Beatles, among many others. ABC-TV responded with a variety show of its own on Saturday nights called Hollywood Palace, which originated from a theater in Los Angeles known as...you guessed it...The Hollywood Palace. It also had quite an array of stars that appeared, and included a different celebrity host each week. But no variety show quite compared to The Ed Sullivan Show. And yes, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (and before him, The Late Show with David Letterman) both originate from the Ed Sullivan Theater, the same place where The Ed Sullivan Show originated in the '50s, '60s, and '70s. A little less than a decade before this aired, camera operators at The Ed Sullivan Show were instructed by the show's director to shoot Elvis Presley from the waist up so as not to reveal his shaking hips that he was known for in the '50s. I've seen Tom Jones perform this song and he would do a decidedly more aggressive hip shake at certain riffs in the song. My hunch is he was probably told by the director to tone it down. But at least the camera operators were allowed to capture a wider shot. Tom Jones was (and still is) a force. What a voice! In the past couple of years, he's appeared as a regular judge on TV's "The Voice" (UK version), and has proven more than once that even now, at the age of 80, he can still belt it with similar force. Few male artists have had the kind of sex appeal with the ladies that this guy had (and still has). Check out some of his other songs. In most cases, there are really good live versions on RUclips. Check out "Delilah," "Love Me Tonight," and my personal favorite, "Help Yourself."
Tom Jones has a great voice. Check out I'll Never Fall in Love Again (live black and white video) for one of the best vocal performances ever. The ladies liked Tom Jones too. Middle aged ladies especially like Tom. To see this, I recommend live video (in color) of Tom singing Treat Her Right.
@Christine Taylor ...Hi! Yes, that's a good one, but "Treat Her Right" was a 1969 performance on Tom's own show, "This Is Tom Jones" (not Ed Sullivan). Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/KkKTMoRs-TU/видео.html Tom's show ran for three years... 1969, 1970, and 1971. Lots of great videos have been uploaded to RUclips of performances from his show... solos by Tom, dance numbers by him, as well as some with production dancers, performances by featured guests, and many fantastic duets Tom did with those artists.
My first reaction to It’s Not Unusual was on Will and Grace when Karen starts singing and then I watched Carlton dancing to it and really wished they happened at the same time so a crossover would happen.
I'm 64. Ed Sullivan was great. You never knew what would be on and if you didn't like it, wait a few minutes and something completely different would come on.
Nah, I was I. England so grew up watching him on English TV shows, and grew up watching Top of the Pops and listening to Radio Luxembourg (not sure why that particular radio station, maybe English radio was censoring stuff I wanted to hear 🤷♀️)
Be sure to react to another song Tom did on that same show... "What'cha Gonna Do [When Your Baby Leaves You]" which had Tom showing off more moves than in this performance of "It's Not Unusual" here. The show set up his performance with production dancers around him who were choreographed, but Tom's moves are his own. You'll see more of that swag. Women have been loving it for decades, while men have envied it. The link follows, so you can check it out: ruclips.net/video/N6OeXOy0E1I/видео.html

Doctors warned his parents that Tom should never go to work in the Welsh coal mines because of having had TB. Tom married when he was 17 and soon he and his wife had a child, so he had no choice but to work where he could to support his family, even though he aspired to succeed as a singer. Days he worked in factory work, construction, and even selling vacuum cleaners; and evenings and weekends he worked singing in the workingmen's clubs and pubs and at other small venues and events... till he got his big break through the promotion and management of Gordon Mills.
Ed Sullivan was a must watch every Sunday night for my parents. Yea that hip action shocked them 😆 🤣 😂
Tom really could dance. Great moves. With a fabulous voice. We didn't miss Ed Sullivan show.
Awww this isn't the full version. It's missing my favorite line! "It's not unusual to see me cryyyyy, I wanna die."
Tom Jones, I'll never live again. So beautiful, thanks Billy 😊
Just Help Yourself. Great song by Tom Jones

Doc, I can't stop singing "What's new, Pussycat"
"Sounds like you've got Tom Jones Syndrome"
"is it common?"
"it's not unusual"
Classic joke; heard it on TV (told by the late comedian-magician Tommy Cooper, I seem to recall; or maybe it was Eric Morcambe of Morcambe and Wise) when I lived in England as a kid. Tom Jones just turned 80
I watched reruns of Ed Sullivan in the 80s. My folks watched it new in the Early 60s as adults.
so I guess Carlton is like, "See, I told you!"
You wanna see the real moves- “Treat her right” by Tom! 👍✌️
Yes. I watched. Its how you saw all the newest music, comedy,.....
Tom Jones just had the ability to knock it out of the park....possibly the best voice ever, coupled with the charisma....powerhouse...ya, use to watch the Tom Jones Show....great time in tv entertainment...
This was before my time (I was born in ‘73). I like it. And he was fine! 😍
Yes I grew up watching Ed Sullivan...all the great performers. THE SUPREMES...TOM, etc...
I watched it faithfully
I came upon earth a few years at the end of the Ed Sullivan show run, but still watched reruns, and my mom and aunt were infatuated with Tom, so I grew up listening to him and seeing him on tv all of the time on other shows.
I was a small child. My mother loved Tim Jones.
