I usually love the podcast, and I feel somewhat aligned with the hostesses, especially Alyssa and Signe. But I totally don't understand this episode. The guest seemed to be more interested in acquiring overpriced bags and re-selling them for even higher prices. It's just consumption and more consumption, in my humble opinion. What's the point of looking for a bag that we like, and spending more money on it for its quality so it can last many years, if we won't keep that bag and we'll see it only as something we can use to get more money out of someone willing to pay for it just to get a status symbol??? I love the designs of some of these high-end bags, but I would never pay that amount of money for something that is basically a status symbol to tell other people that we're able to afford this, when we can find local shops with bags of equally high quality for a fraction of the cost of these bags, even second hand., and you could promote and support local businesses instead of feeding other person's consumption (if you buy it second-hand), or big conglomerates if you buy them new. And one more thing that I find unfortunate with some of these businesses that "repair" luxury products, is that they only repair "luxury" products, they won't accept to repair what they consider a lower quality item, or they ask for exorbitant prices for repairing a bag that costed 80 euros for example. Maybe this business is different, but I've noticed this several times. That's why I do not see the sustainability mindset in these business, just a purely profit-oriented business model, like any retailer, generally speaking.

I'm surprised that with her financial mindset, Christina didn't push back on the notion that handbags are an investment. It's just a handbag... raising a family is an investment, a home is an investment, education is an investment. I appreciate the guest's knowledge of restoration. But...when she went on and on how her Chanel bag increased in value and was an investment...cringy. JMO

Inherently depreciates, too. Even “old” Chanel now is depreciating. Hermes may appreciate but the convoluted hoops you have to jump through to get even a preloved Hermes put me right off.

I find this episode really informative. I listened to someone today who said that the two reasons we usually don't do things is 1) we don't care and 2) we don't know how. Number (2) is the one i always run into when trying to save a favourite dress or handbag or even a dishwasher. The Right to Repair and the Ability to Repair in your Community should just be standard.

I really enjoyed this podcast, Charlotte was very interesting and informative. I think the lack of quality in an item now is across the board, not just handbags. We need to do much better. I'm not into handbags at all (my daughter is). My love is shoes, I frequently repair them and get as much longevity out of them as humanly possible. I totally support the idea of repairing and retaining an item for the long term ❤

So when I lost weight I dropped from a size 12 down to an 8!! Our local Bootery took in 2 wonderful belts that I thought I needed new holes punched. That is not what’s done!! Now with the belt buckle end cut to size, I have 2 “new “ belts!! Black and brown leather!!! So pleased to have searched a bit harder!!

I love the emphasis on buying a quality item over a dupe or replica!
Personally, I am not a big brand person but that doesn't mean that I can't apply this concept to my own purchases by looking for well-made items that can be well-loved.

Thanks Ladies! SO interesting to listen to the podcast. I just watched the "Before" and "After" video on The Handbag Clinic's website. Such amazing work restoring, cleaning and re-dying leather to give the bags a second life!

I definitely saw the difference a good cobbler can make, I had items I loved but worn to death and these items deemed hopeless by the person I saw were ultimately saved after years and atè back in my regular rotation!

I’m probably not gonna make money on my little LV Fowler noir bag I purchased 2nd hand 8 years ago but love its size as I only use as evening type bag so not everyday use is in pristine condition came with box dust bag and receipt. This was before I retired and had a little money to spare. The bag is simple and I love having my 1 little luxury bag lol. Thanks Charlotte this is a great service

I initially stopped watching the video after about 15 minutes. The topic felt much too focused on consumerism. I came back and tried again, and I can see the point of care and maintenance. BUT, this still feels outside of the usual discussion in the podcast, because it’s so much about “luxury.” I don’t personally care about “luxury,” which to me is really status signaling. A bit disappointed in this episode, though I have no right to be. Sigh… I can understand that discussion topics might feel lacking at times, leaving the hosts to bring in less sustainability-relevant discussions.

Please don't discount your disappointment. I think we have all come to this podcast for similar reasons: that we have common beliefs about over-consumption, and that we have respect for the hosts of the cast.
It's completely ok to voice your feeling that this guest seemed focused AWAY from the values of their usual discussion.
These ladies read these comments AND reflect genuinely about the content here. It's always good to share your honest thoughts. ❤️

Yes the color of the kislux is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc…

Thanks for this episode! One question I had after listening, why don’t luxury brands offer the services of The Handbag Clinic? A business like hers is a great initiative, but should be the responsibility of luxury brands and retailers.

Really interesting reading the comments. I feel like as Sustain This grows in audience you guys will have to be more careful, maybe, with the topic of consumerism. I really like people calling that out and the fact that the guest focus on luxury more, although honestly I think it is a great idea to restore those items and make them last longer.
Personaly, as a vegan, I dont use leather but I appreciate this type of project. But yeah, luxury goods are particularly bad ethically, we should acknowledge that.
Will be here next week ❤

I would love a Podcast on how to resell your luxury items either yourself or where to consign with. How to get a consignment shop. I never know what to do with my pieces when I am done with them 💕

I thought this topic was interesting and I really appreciate how the guest focuses her business on restoring pieces. One observation I made while listening (while driving) is that she (most likely inadvertently) came across as lacking in humility. There were several times throughout listening that this thought came to mind. Maybe I would have a different experience watching it verses listening blindly? It seems that many others are attempting to restore items and/or authenticate and while they might not yet have the experience and knowledge base she has it is worth acknowledging their efforts in sustainability. We all have to start somewhere after all.
