9:08 As mentioned numerous times before, the Mk 141 Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile Launcher are ONLY carried on the Burke Flights I & II. Presumably the anti-ship capability in the SM-6 missile and the Tomahawk Block IV TLAMs modified with a maritime attack capability that will enter service in 2021 will make up for this deficiency. Perhaps, the more interesting deficiency of the USS Jack H Lucas (DDG-125) is it is not fitted with the highly capable SLQ-32(V)7 (SEWIP Block 3) electronic warfare suite or the High Energy Laser and Integrated Optical-dazzler with Surveillance (HELIOS). If so fitted the Flight III Burke would be truly an awesome warship. It however, has been reported starting with DDG-138, the Flight IIIs will be constructed with the SEWIP Block III. I would further mention that the Lucas does have the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) installed. The CEC is designed to enhance the Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) war fighting capability of ships and aircraft by the netting of battle force sensors to provide a single, distributed AAW defense capability. CEC significantly improves battle force air and missile defense capabilities by combining data from multiple battle force air search sensors on CEC-equipped units into a single, real-time, composite track picture (network-centric warfare). This will greatly enhance fleet air defense by making jamming more difficult and allocating defensive missiles on a strike group basis.
god fuck the SEWIP Block 3 that thing is waaaaayyy too fat on the cheeks and increases tonnage ridiculously. Completely ruined the front aesthetic of the Burkes. And the OEMs original models were consciously deceptive to make it seem like such a small dimension add on to the ships. They are much larger IRL and this is a very deceptive practice. It's time the navy got serious about designing a successor to the class and Ticos and put the FAT EW suite on that thing.

I can’t help it. Anytime I hear “Flight 2A,” it just sounds weird. I’m 12 years out of the loop, but we always-ALWAYS-said “Flight IIAlpha.” I’m not harping on it. It just sounds weird. Edit: does the software library still use ATIS? Double Edit: I thought the Flight IIIs were going to have two CIWS? What happened to that plan?🤔
What's puzzling is that cwis was installed instead of the rolling missile system 116 which carries 21 missile interceptors. Though the on board ship tracking system is required for targeting, once the missile is fired it tracks and destroys on it's own, allowing the system to confront more incoming missiles at a time whereas cwis though a self sufficient system that can both track and target yet can only track and destroy one incoming missile at a time and at much shorter ranges. The rolling missile can track and destroy multiple targets at greater distances. Unless the navy is depending on the essm missile for that role. Curious to know how the cwis was preferred over the rolling missile 116.
I'm thinking they are expecting essm to fill that gap and rightfully so it's meant to take out anti ship missiles and aircraft and if you fill up two row of vls cells on an arligh burke with just essm you can carry 32 missles that seems like a fair enough reason
I agree with the 1st replier above. Also, CIWS can also be used against surface targets. So it's more useful for ship defence, if not quite as good at killing incoming missiles.
@corvanphoenix Precisely ram filed a role that is no longer is needed unless it's meant to be temporary or something you put on an aircraft carrier or land based site
I would not be surprised to see the fore and aft CIWS stations ultimately replaced with a 150+ Kw DEW system. ESSM for longer range point defense against ASCMs and the DEW taking in close in stuff with unlimited rounds. I think the Flight III has the power for that. The DEW would also be able to dazzle or burn drones and FIACs.
@peterl3282 I agree we won't see lasers shooting down bmd for a while lasers will take the place of cows and then get bette and more capable r from there
