Tyler's Interview with Brittany: • Interviewing Charlotte...
Hellooowww! We're back with my thoughts on Season 2 of H2O. One thing I wanted to emphasize in this video and again here - is that the character Charlotte, while controversial, is fictional. It's important to remember a real woman played this character. So comments about the way she looks are not kind or needed. Especially because how many girls who grew up watching this show were the same size or bigger than Charlotte. So roast Charlotte's actions all you want, but let's all go easy on the actors who were just doing a job and were mostly minors when they filmed this.

Also: I feel so bad for Brittany that she's still dealing with the aftermath of playing the mean girl/other woman trope in a tween show. It's really telling that when a man plays a really good villain, he's praised for his acting prowess, but when a teenage girl plays her role so well that people are literally still talking about it 10+ years later, people are unable to separate her character and the real woman who played her to the point that the actress had real-life mental health outcomes. The world truly won't let us women live.

I mean when you think about it, Charlotte’s anger is kind of justified. Put yourself in her shoes. If your boyfriend was ditching you every five minutes to go hang out with his ex and her friends and always coming up with dodgy answers to everything, what would you think is going on?
Yes she did become more clingy, but that’s because she felt she’d lose Lewis, and this fear actually caused her TO end up losing Lewis. Even part of her reason for becoming a mermaid was to be the kind of girl Lewis would be interested in - more like CLEO!!!

  • @Thatdumbgremlin

My theory as to why Charlotte went from 10 to 100 once she became a mermaid is that she actually has more mermaid power than her mind can handle. Think about it--the main three got their powers together, and they each have one power. Meaning the magic got split between the three of them. Charlotte became a mermaid by herself, the Moon gave her all three powers, and then she immediately starts to-pardon the pun-fall off the deep end. I like the idea that the Moon Pool, and by extension the Moon itself, is full of this ancient magic that no one understands completely, with the potential to either amplify your best or your worst traits like a luck of the draw situation, and as a result it reeeeally shouldn't be trifled with. And Charlotte was making a nine layer trifle with that pool, all because she was jealous of the main three, but especially Cleo because obviously. (And Lewis is also to blame, let's be honest.) This becomes even more valid when you see her after she loses the tail, and she seems a lot more like she was in the middle of the season, like way more mellowed out. Still making excuses for her more heinous behavior, but still. It would have made her arc way more interesting if it was actually canon.

I totally agree with this! I just want to add too that Charlotte also got her powers 1 full moon cycle before the one that took away her powers. So if we go off of what Lewis said abt the season finale full moon being the most powerful because of the planets aligning perfectly, it also makes sense that Charlotte got a bigger dosage of mermaid magic than when the girls got their's. I think this also makes sense with how many girls got moonstruck per full moon episode. In the first season, each girl got moonstruck one at a time each episode, but not once in season 2 did only one of them get struck. I feel like u could also tell that each full moon was getting stronger by how much the girls were effected, essentially hinting to the audience that Charlotte was gonna be powerful. I just think it's super interesting to see how much Charlotte changed and her antics amplified while she was a mermaid and then being more mild after her powers got taken away.

I am also a Charlotte apologist because honestly rewatching it as an adult, you see how sweet and nice she was, how hard she tried to be their friend, and how badly they treated her EVEN THOUGH CLEO BROKE UP WITH LEWIS. She was obviously written to be a villain, but her nature changes in a flick of a finger, and for what? It's very reminiscent of Camille from Emily in Paris- sweet natured girls who become villains because the main characters are terrible. I mean, my trio are not terrible, I love them, but it is their fault Charlotte ended up the way she did.

Yeah, it's just weird. Lewis is so rude towards Charlotte and he clearly shows that has absolutely zero interest in her romantically, but she somehow wants him anyway. But then again I think such dynamics can exist in real life as well, where a person is just normally polite or clearly not interested, but another person for some reason interprets into this behavior, "Yeah, that person definitely wants me too, we are made for each other". I mean both are at some point toxic in this relationship, Lewis doesn't care at all about Charlotte, acts rude and gaslights her in order to keep the mermaid secret. While Charlotte later on acts over controlling, extremely jealous and abusive.

I just rewatched S2 and I thought Charlotte was really empathetic. I loved how she experienced jealousy, possessiveness, and the desire to be included, and let those things take over her brain and turn her into a villain. I feel like these are all things teenage girls experience to some degree, and I loved seeing that represented on screen! I feel like that's so much more interesting than a perfectly sweet character.

Seeing as these are normal experiences for teenagers I don’t think she should have remained a villain, normally shows like this exist to teach kids morals. She doesn’t have to join the friend group but it should have ended with heartfelt apologies that sum up the message and then her mum gets a job somewhere else and she has to move. So not friends but not evil, could have been a big growth moment and Lewis and Cleo learn to be more honest about their feelings and communicate better, Charlotte learns that you shouldn’t deal with your anger by hurting others. That’s literally a basic drama formula, you /resolve/ the conflict

I think you should watch season 3. I like it even though it did hurt my Rane/Zikki shipping heart, my adult self sees a good message for young girls. Will and bella are fine. And I think the ending is pretty good, also some fun lore. I'm excited to see your reaction, especially since you havent seen it before!
As far as charlotte goes, I have empathy for some of her situations, think the girls and especially Cleo were unfair (at first) but I disagree with a lot of your defenses.
    1. Charlotte did not try to be friends with the girls or lewis. She saw lewis, instantly fell, and decided he was the one she was going to be with. And she started moving in on him while he was still with cleo, she wasnt just trying to be friends, from the very first interaction. And cleo was nice to her on the first interaction.
    2. Charlotte was always faking all of her "shared interests" with lewis. And as soon as they got together she steered him away from his interests it was all just a ploy to get with him and then change him. She never actually cared about him as a person, just the idea of him. And ignored his actual wants and desires at every turn, right from that dinner seen where he said "of course I like you but" and she wouldnt let him finish. At every turn in the beginning of their relationship, he was trying to say "we're just friends" and she kept pushing it. And it compounded into their actual relationship where she ignored what he wanted for a birthday party, ignored him wanting to help his friends, pushed him away from his friends, told cleo, someone he has been friends with his entire life, that he only helped her cuz he felt sorry for her while simultaneously forcing him not to see his childhood best friend. Lewis wasnt a good boyfriend but, can you blame him? He didnt want to be with her in the first place and obviously still wanted cleo. And we talk about boundaries so much, charlotte didnt respect Lewis's.
    3. The girls tried really hard to help charlotte after she turned. Even being bitter about it, even after she turned full bitch, they still tried to help her. And, she betrayed them by trying to push them into the very danger they warned her about.
    4. Nothing can excuse the abject cruelty she displayed at the end. Where the girls are trying to help her with her powers and she uses hers against them and to taunt them. Where she fights and hurts them when they're only trying to help. Where she steals cleos necklace. When she tries to taketheir powers. Honestly the whole necklace part is the hardest to watch because it's so compoundingly cruel, one hurt on top of another, cold and calculated.
I felt bad for her when cleo was trying to out her in a lie (especially the reading the diary bit). I felt bad for her when no one was willing to help her find out about her grandmother. But right from the beginning, she set herself up as "I'm going to steal that boyfriend". That plus the lack of actually listening to lewis and just assigning her own feelings to him and the fact that she never wanted to be friends with the girls means I cant see her as this sympathetic character. A fun, interesting and even layered villian, but not sympathetic.

I actually really like season three. When I first watched it I didn’t really care for it and I think that was just because of Emma not being in it but I watched it again during the winter for some summer vibes and I really actually enjoyed it. I also think it’s because I’m not a big Emma fan especially now that I’m 20 and she just reminds me of some of the annoying people I was in school with so not having her in it was kind of nice. It also feels a lil more mature I guess, it’s still a kids show but I think they tried to make it more of a tween show at that point because school was a bigger part of the third season and the girls relationships were also more prevalent compared to the other two season. I also really like Bella and her character and I think she fit in really well with the other two girls. They had another season long storyline like the second season but it’s as good as the second season storyline but it was still enjoyable just I guess weird if anything. i never got the "hating on the actor for playing an unlikeable character" thing. it baffles me how some people can be so obsessed with celebrities on a parasocial level and still forget that actors AREN'T their characters. one example that stuck with me was the treatment of wyatt russell for playing john walker in TFATWS. it was absolutely despicable. don't get me wrong: I hated john walker, but one glance at the actor and you don't see one in another. it was so crazy that wyatt was getting death threats and being bullied about his looks just for doing his job, makes you wonder if he's be willing to take on another similar role just because people were so delusional they couldn't get passed his fantastic acting.

I’m a Charlotte apologist too, but I hate how hard she simped for Lewis. He clearly didn’t love her at all and her obsession with him was honestly embarrassing to watch. In all of the scenes that they’re together, he barely even tolerates her and that’s putting it lightly. I believe that Charlotte should’ve dumped Lewis and found someone that gave her the attention and love she deserved. On the topic of Lewis, I’ll never understand why he agreed to be in a relationship with Charlotte in the first place or why he never found the courage to dump her.

    • @annapruitt5546
      @annapruitt5546 Год назад +2

It’s incredibly cowardly of him to be so dishonest. Whenever Charlotte flat out asks him if he wants to be/stay with her, he says yes, even though the answer is very obviously no. He does everything out of obligation, going along with it as if he has no will power or choice in the matter.
It doesn’t make sense to be with someone you don’t actually want (and vice versa, you gotta give up on someone who doesn’t want you).
      It’s miserable for everyone involved.
And Cleo was in the wrong too. She should have been honest about how she felt towards Lewis and explained to Charlotte that they were still in a thing together. Cleo was super petty about everything
So the moral is that it will always be wayyy easier and nicer to simply be honest and clear about feelings & intent.

Late to the party, but fun fact: Dolphins, even if they were born and raised in captivity, can be successfully released into the wild. The key is having them be accepted by an existing pod. When accepted by the pod they’ll teach the newbie what they need to know to survive in the wild. It’s also possible for Orcas to do this, but hasn’t been successful. They tried to do it with the Free Willy orca, but it refused to leave the humans and wouldn’t eat, so they had to take it back so they wouldn’t die.

    • @anni1348
      @anni1348 Год назад +1

I guess with Orcas it's especially difficult to release them in the wild and get them accepted in a new pod,, because they speak different "dialects", so two strange orcas would have major communication difficulties and that's one thing in captivity that leads to aggressive and violent behavior between the Orca whales.

That "random girl" in the "Ash Supervisor" episode was seen before, in the "Emma Rebel Party-Animal" episode.
That random girl was the one who suddenly became horny and had the random idea of calling all the boys to join the party, with monstrous results on Mrs. Gilbert's monstrous statue.
I think Rikki was kind of rude in that rebel episode, taking advantage of Emma's liability and provoking her, only to become the "good & mature one", at the end.
Also... why did she have to igonore Emma all day and only hang out with her brother?
I mean... Emma was her friend, not her brother, and there was one episode in season 1 where it was obvious that she didn't like him so much.
In the Rebel episode "Fire & Ice", all started at Elliot's "I wish my sister was like you", which obviously hurt Emma.
I find that kind of a sad moment, and a thing I think we all related to, at some point.
I understand why Emma is the generally least liked of the trio, but I also feel like her bad personality traits are the most real, and I personally feel like I identify with them, the most (out of everyone's bad traits, in the show).

I never appreciated people like Rikki (in that particular episode) who always try to elevate themselves, messing with others’ self-esteem.
That’s why Emma’s my favorite, Claire Holt was very good to portrait her.

Actually I always felt sympathy towards Charlotte. And honestly, Cleo was more annoying and acting obnoxious more then her. I do not justify some of Charlotte’s actions, however the trio was rather mean to her, without a purpose most of the time.
I loved the part where they were bonding playing volleyball together as a team. Now I remember that scene at her birthday party (or was it somebody else’s, need to rewatch), when she tricked the Trio into the garage just to trap them as mermaids. That was really impolite and conniving of Charlotte.
Moreover, I find it hilarious when Charlotte became a mermaid, it added more spice to the series and I loved her getting powers! Also
a redemption arc and everyone excusing their past and awful behaviours would do. I cannot believe of the amount of hate the actress gets, even up to this day… I wasn’t aware of it… Discussing and how uncivil!
Also I loved that Cleo, Riki and Emma got a power booster, Ash was hotter and way better than Byron (I had a crush on Ash *blushes*), but I do not like at all that Cleo’s parents are divorced and the missing of some old characters such as Miriam and Miss Chatham. Period.

    - ooh been waiting for this one
    - i love tyler, he really is the h2o guy
    - i absolutely agree, the first time i rewatched s2, my memories told me that charlotte was the worst villain ever and that lasted all season, but for 20 episodes she's just a regular girl. sure she had a crush on lewis and was flirting with him even if he had a gf, but when they broke up, everything she did was fine, she just pursued a guy she had a crush on. it's not her fault he had a complicated relationship with his ex, in fact lewis is in the wrong for dating charlotte even when he still loves cleo deep down. like it never felt like he liked charlotte, he kinda just fell into it, he liked that a cute girl liked him and was paying attention to him, but he never really liked her for her, he was mostly with her to keep her away it seemed. and of course as kids we're on cleo and lewis team, but like he simply sucked to charlotte. and cleo was the messy one at the start it felt really weird. okay well charlotte could be kinda petty but not cruel, it was a very gradual process to see what she was really like in relationships. although she did use silly methods to get lewis, ie lied about her interests and stuff, bc she just wanted him to like her and it was doomed to fail cuz they are very different people, even when the got in a relationship she expected him to do things because they were in a relationship not because she liked him it was kinda weird but makes sense for her age I suppose. it's really towards he end where we see her manipulative and jealous behaviour come out, especially after she becomes a mermaid and becomes power hungry. you can see little hints beofre at her manipulativeness and pettiness, but its really the powers that make it all go to her head and she becomes the worst person ever. and in her pov she is justified in what she does, even if she's not lmao
    - i must give some appreciation to zane in s2, bc in s1 he's the annoying guy that redeems himself and in s3 he's really just money obsessed and jealous, but in s2 he's very chill, he's a good boyfriend, he doesn't interact much with the group but when he does its civil, him and lewis have a very odd but cute frenemies type of thing going, i love s2 zayne.
    - i def think you should watch s3, i also watched it like later in life after s1-2 because i simply didn't know it existed back then, but i enjoyed it a lot, where s2 feels like the cleo show, and is really focused on her, s3 feels like the rikki show, she has a lot of the emotional connection to mako. and cleo has such good character growth in s3 as well. there are some aspect i like less, but overall i think its so sweet, the new additions are great, it's so fun. and if you ever wanna get into it, i love mako mermaids, i just love how different the vibe is

I still don't get why so many people justify Charlottes's behaviour. Let's analyse it from the outside, ok? New girl in town and bla bla, ok she didn't get her best welcome but it was because Cleo could't make peace with her brain. You left, your boyfriend so why keeping being jealous? For half of the season she's like "I don't want Lewis anymore but, hey, let's stalk him all around. Let's see what he does with his new friend because I don't want them to end up together (coz techically Lewis should come back to me)". Reeeeeallly on point, right? And, the divorce thing is just an excuse to justify her overreacting. About Charlotte...you come in town and you start buzzing around a nice looking (not for me btw) boy who recently broke up with his girlfriend. And that's fine but it doesn't justify her possessive behaviour. And Lewis doesn't blink an eye for it until the very end. This can't be real. I mean, in real life I would blow you out in a minute. Wasting your time with someone doesn't mean that this person is your propriety. This is stalking. I'm still wondering why he didn't report her when she switched off and steal his phone. It's someting what would drives me mad if it happens to me.

I think a lot of Cleo's behavior can also be explained by her parents sudden divorce between seasons. It would make sense that she started acting out.

This comment is coming from a guy, but i loved Charlotte both times I've watched S2. It's horrible how some people can't separate the actress from the character, but she wasn't even as bad as some of the psycho fans say she is. She had a crush on a guy who was fair game and was demonized for it? The other girls treated her like dirt and we're supposed to root for them? Then Charlotte just F's off when the season is over? She's a genuinely tragic high school character IMO.

I hated Charlotte so much as a kid, I remember ranting about her after every episode to my mom because I couldn't get over how mean and manipulative she was

I’m not hearing anyone out! Charlotte was genuinely insane like if you really pay attention she had this weird agenda of INSISTING her and lewis were made for each other like girl. Then she constantly lies and gaslights lewis. Like yea if your bf keeps ditching you you have a right to be mad but she genuinely acted like she owns him at times. But that’s just me.

You know the funny or more like iconic part in the Lewis's bday episode XD the bday gift Cleo got for Lewis is still at Charlotte's house XDDD After Lewis was like thankful and love the gift... He forgot to take it with him.. Its like the gift was forgotten after that little scene

i think watching season 3 is def worth it! it's honestly my favourite season because the girls are a lot more mature. a lot of people hate on bella but she isn't that bad. she isn't annoying or too over the top, she's kinda just... there. but season 3 throws a lot of stuff at them and i think it was done amazingly. hoping to see a video on it :)

I guess the main issue is that Bella is a boring as hell character. Emma had a distinct personality, her own struggle's and she had a family written into the story, Bella has nothing besides liking singing, being nice, having this weird jelly power and having the hots for a guy that does not care about her outside of being a mermaid. And obviously Will is horrible. And the worst is they completely wrecked Zane's character and reversed all of his character development he went through, which ruined his and Rikki's relationship.

Season 3 was alright and I seem to remember enjoying it but I never loved that they completely replaced Emma with a new character in Bella.

Im just going to say it.. Charlotte was by far my favorite character of not just season two,but the entire series...She represented pretty much everyone whose ever been on the outside looking in at a group of very close, very tight knit friends that you cant help but want to be a part of...Im also sticking to the fact that when Charlotte became a mermaid, she was actually terrified out of her mind because she all of these powers suddenly and had no clue how to deal with that, which is why she acts ignorant and cold to the others..And lets face it, there's times they deserve it
