Kayley, my favorite less friction ones are the ones that are made out of pantyhose like material. I have never had ANY breakage from them. Bonus: they also do not cause a bend in my hair.

Hi Kayley! Sometimes when I put up my hair in a loose bun at the top of my head overnight I get a lot of pull on my roots with the weight of it once I lie down. Do you have any tips for this? Thanks a million 😃

My favs and go-to's: rope braids for nightly protection, because it rewards you in the morning with pretty waves. Hair masks can help you detangle if it's really knotted. And only washing my bangs/front pieces in the sink when I cant handle a full shower

    • @smm855
      @smm855 5 месяцев назад +6

lol you're better than I! When my bangs look greasy, I spray my hair brush bristles with dry hair shampoo and just brush my bangs until they don't look gross anymore 😅

just an added tip for those who struggle with their mental health and find it hard to take care of their hair (hi! it’s me!😂) if your hair is extra dirty and you don’t have the time/energy to wash it just put it up in a slicked back pony or bun! add a little product and it’ll look intentional🤍

You can also put a scarf or a turban over it even at home, so the oils don't touch your skin and it doesn't break out.

KC Davis talks about this in her book: How to Keep House While Drowning! She mentions how to deal when your overwhelmed with keeping up with the EVERYTHING, that sometimes its possible to get to the point where even brushing your hair is a struggle. She specifically mentions tying your hair up like you do, but also mentions silk sleep bonnets (which I'm obsessed with, so comfy!). I can't believe how long your hair is now! Lucious! 😍 Also, I'm so happy you're not ignoring/pretending about the mental health. So many of us are struggling right now, and seeing someone in real time deal with it can feel really comforting that we're not the only ones that are hanging by our fingernails

This is such a great video Kayley. I’m neurodivergent and there are so many burnout or shutdown days where it’s so hard to get myself in the shower, let alone to wash my hair. A huge help has been to start wearing a silk bonnet. I also got my kids silk pillow cases and we’re now waking up tangle free with our hair shiny. My daughter’s natural curls look fresh for days too. I love how easy it makes our mornings.

Also, I finally just got a microfiber hair towel at 33! WOW what a game changer! SO happy to see your face Kayley ❤

If you can braid, I like putting my hair in two french braids when I'm not doing well. It helps me feel put together, it's a nice repetitive task for a few minutes, and my hair is out of the way for the rest of the day. That way, it doesn't bother me, and if I don't touch it as much it can go longer between washes (and also, the braids hide greasy roots really well so they're a great option on days where i didn't manage to get a shower). And if you make them loose enough, you can just go to bed with them in and have nice contained hair in the morning!

A tip of mine that I think would count is an oil mist (drugstore!! Ogx makes one but i like herbal essences better). If you get a lightweight one and mist it over your lengths before bed I’ve found less tangles and breakage in the mornings, and it’s a little lighter than reapplying leave in conditioners! Love the video Kayley, we missed you so much!

A tip I learned from having allergies: if your hair is getting a bit dirty but you can't wash it for whatever reason, wrap it up before bed. A hair scarf, cap, whatever works for you. This keeps any grease/dirt/product/etc that's on your hair from getting all over your pillow and then all over your face as you sleep.

My therapist says that something is always better than nothing. So maybe you can't wash your hair today, but maybe you can spray some leave-in and brush it. (This extends to other areas--maybe you can't clean your whole bathroom, but you can wipe your sink with a Clorox wipe; maybe you can't go for a walk but you can stand outside for 10 minutes, etc). No shame in doing whatever you are capable of that day

Things that helped me as someone who has spent time in bed due to mental and physical health:
    - Have hair stuff (brush, scrunchies) in my nightstand.
    - accepting that sometimes things have got to give (temporarily) so shorter hair (but still able to put it up) and growing out my bangs but having cute clips when I do go out or have an online appointment.
    - I love my wet brush, it detangles so well
    - doing things where I’m more comfortable, I always have to blow dry my hair but I can do it in bed!
-when blow drying hair it really helps to do it in sections. I divide it in 4, put it in clips and suddenly it’s way less overwhelming.

Kayley, thank you so much for this video! It truly meant a lot to me to hear you talk about these things. I've been quite sick for over 10 years, and figuring out how to care for my hair and not hate how it looks has been a journey for me! I really like the tips that you shared, and I want to look into getting some soft hair ties! Some other things that have been helpful for me personally are: 1) having shorter hair so that I'm not as self-conscious about how thin it is, 2) working to believe my husband when he tells me that my hair is beautiful, and 3) having realistic expectations for what I'm able to do for my hair. Recently I got a shower stool, as standing up in the shower can be pretty exhausting for me, especially when I wash my hair. Being able to sit has been such a help for me, and I don't feel as anxious or tired about washing my hair now.
Again, thank you so much for this video! It helps some very tender parts of my heart feel seen. ❤️❤️

The Loreal Everpure 21-in-1 leave in spray is supposed to be really similar to the Pureology Color Fanatic spray that is really popular. The ingredient deck is very similar. Same parent company owns both brands and there are multiple products in recent Loreal drugstore lines that are basically dupes for high end. In regard to clarifying shampoos, I've tried a few of the popular ones but my fave is the Pantene Volume and Body shampoo. It somehow cleans really well but doesn't make your hair feel like straw after rinsing it out. My second choice after Pantene would be the Kristin Ess clarifying.

OMG thank you for creating this. I have spent the last 3 years in bed due to chronic illness and cannot shower regularly anymore, let alone wash my own hair as often as I need to. I resorted to having extremely short hair to cope. I am so heartened to have seen this on your channel. It will really help me, and it validates the steps I have already taken. I have heard from other friends with chronic illness that in addition to using leave-in conditioner, they also use leave-in shampoo. Have you heard of this? I haven’t personally tried it yet but have heard it’s useful when you have to go a long time without washing your hair.
Thank you also for sharing your story in your previous video and alluding to it again here. I am sorry for what you have had to go through, and might be still going through. Your bravery in sharing what has happened to you makes me feel really seen. I have never before encountered a hair stylist who accounted for the full human experience beyond looking cute or stylish. The thing about claw clips (and with how trendy they have become this should be shouted everywhere!)...
    They can be dangerous!!
Take your claw clip out if you get in a car!!!! Because if you get in an accident all those little teeth of the claw clip get embedded in your skull. Claw clips can exacerbate your head injuries by a lot!!!
If you use claw clips, be conscious about this and stay safe!!!!

My body reacts negatively towards cleansing agents, it's due to atypical connective tissue.
I stopped using most products about 6 months ago, that includes shampoo and conditioner. I use a boar bristle brush to distribute the sebum for my scalp all throughout my hair now. Both my scalp and hair have never been this healthy.
My hair is in between wavy and curly, very pliable, I do miss certain looks that I can't achieve without some type of fixing agent like gel. I recently tried some (pure) wool wax, it worked really well! I can just brush the wax out the same way I do sebum, so no need for cleaning agents.
Oil makes my hair look greasy and flat. I was scared wax would do the same, but it turned out to be the perfect fit for me. I recently ordered some (pure) beeswax as that's firmer than the wool wax, I'm excited to see what I can do with it. Wax has a lot of similarities to pomade, and very little in common with gel or hairspray.
Kaylee's tips are great, but I wanted to add a different perspective just in case somebody else struggles with the same things I do.
Pure boar bristle without plastic bristles, otherwise the plastic will scrape your scalp. I bought both cheap and expensive versions, they're equally as good. The bristles are firmer and longer if it's the expensive type, that makes it easier to detangle and reach the scalp. But I find myself gravitating towards the softer bristles of the cheap brush.
I brush my hair as often as I used to shampoo it, about once every 3 days. There's a lot of information on the internet on how to brush and honestly it's really not that deep. You don't need to do a certain amount of strokes, time, or give equal attention to all areas. Brush where your scalp has sebum build up and then go to areas of your hair that are dry, sometimes it takes me 2 minutes, sometimes it takes 20, use intuition not instructions.

I love this! What a beautiful way to use a hard time in your life to share wisdom with others.
These tips are also super helpful for neurodivergent people as well. Adhd brain here and one thing i know for me and many in the ND community struggle with is self care. I can tend to go days without brushing or washing my hair and it just stays in the same tight messy bun.
My quick tips to add for more textured babes. I have super thick wavy/curly hair so it adds a lil more trouble to doing easy maintenance. The claw clip is a great tip. I use the ones that look like an octopus bc it helps holding all my hair. Dark colored dry shampoo for refreshing between washes makes a big difference. And just learning really easy braids to make the hair feel styled without much effort goes a long way. The braiding can also really help with lessening how tangled textured hair gets overnight, especially if like me you can't do bonnets or silk pillowcases bc the texture just bothers me while im trying to sleep.

It is so nice to see your videos popping up again! Thank you for all your efforts! Also, random question: I noticed you were wearing a flat snake necklace, and I love those as well, but my hair always gets stuck in between the little chains and creates so much damage and breakage (of both my hair and the necklace!). Does this happen to you as well?

If you have greasy roots with ends that are dry, fragile, or frizzy, but all you can manage that day is dry shampoo, try a dry oil spray for the ends of your hair. I sometimes put a bit on before I get in there with the dry shampoo, for a bit of protection when I'm brushing that out, but mostly, I use it to calm down frizz afterwards. It doesn't need to be an expensive one - mine is made by Schwarzkopf in their got2b range. It doesn't leave the ends of my fine, thin hair stringy like a leave in conditioner, serum or hair oil can.
Also, if you can manage it, take the time to give yourself a head massage while you're rubbing the dry shampoo into your roots. It makes it feel more like a self-care step, and less like something you're only doing because you can't manage a shower.

I love this! Incredibly relatable. I have always loved your content and especially love the realist views about life you are sharing. I actually learned to French braid (and all sorts of other braids) my hair from your old braid encyclopedia days. Thank you for being so brave and sharing snippets of your life. ❤

In my experience, changing the brush so it fits the type of hair helps tremendously fx bigger brush head for longer hair, brushing from the ends and up towards the scalp with conditioner. If it get's stuck, don't force it, add a bit more conditioner and spread out the tangle then brush.
If I'm not feeling well, I'll brush my hair before heading into the shower because it helps with the tangles afterwards. Not rubbing the hair dry with a towel, but padding/scrunching it prevents tangles.
Removing the hair on the brush every time you are done really helps with my hair not getting oily because of all the dust and stuff gathered on the brush and occasionally washing it as well.
Either way, hope this might help someone out there and have as wonderful day

It’s so lovely to see a new video from you ❤.
This is very interesting to me - as someone who’s embraced their natural curl pattern for the last few years, many of these tips are things that I do as part of my routine, eg sleeping with my hair in a pineapple, using a micro fibre towel on wash day. I also try to make wash day count (by following a routine to give my curls longevity), so that I won’t have to refresh my hair for the next 4-5 days.

Any tips for that bed head flatness in the back/ crown area? It’s my biggest struggle- my hair just reaches my shoulders and is thin/ gets really oily so I find myself just giving up and throwing it in a bun or pony until next wash and it’s really just taking the fun out of hair y’know?

Hi Kayley! First of all, it's great to have you back and good to know that you are getting better and being able to take care of yourself. As someone who has consistently struggled with mental health, I know how challenging and scary that can be. Do you have any tips for keeping hair contained at night for someone with chin/shoulder length hair? My hair doesn't tie up into a single pony yet for reference.

I love my microfibre towel! It makes such a difference as my hair holds a lot of water. I put my hair in two loose dutch braids to sleep, which I find most comfortable as I find a low braid doesn’t hold my hair enough and a bun pulls on my hair too much. Thank you for these tips!! I’m so excited to try them!

Especially if I'm air drying my hair, I use two microfiber towels. I leave each one on for about 15 minutes. My theory is this absorbs twice as much water.

I can get up to 2 weeks without washing my hair. I always wash my hair twice, and I use those scalp tool.
Use a micro fibre towel until it’s about 80%. Then blast it with the Dyson. X

I wash my hair once a week and put it up in a clip when it’s wet and go to work. 😂 I’m so lazy and not good with time management. I have to wear it up everyday at work anyways so there’s no point in blowing it out or anything. Luckily I have very thick hair so it doesn’t get greasy very quickly. I also wash it 2-3 times when I do wash it.
