Sorry, after over a decade without a decent game, I've become pretty hopeless for this franchises future. I'm not going to be angry at people not being interested in Metroid, just sad that Nintendo doesn't market these incredible games, and just sad that something about them just makes them unappealing outside of their already established fanbase. I wouldn't hope for much.

Ragnar Ahlman Not exactly, look at games like Titanfall 2, any of the previous Metroid games, or any Fire Emblem game before Awakening. All amazing games, but sold poorly compared to others games. Sales don't really depend on whether the games are mediocre or not. In many cases, a very mediocre game can print money for its developers and publishers (Destiny).
I'll also be buying this, if only so that I can say I bought a metroid game at launch instead of 20+ years later. Also I'll be able to compare the two remakes to compare and determine which one had the better ideas for expanding on the original.

Not a Metroid fan, but after Dread, this, and Prime 4 being announced, I like to see the Metroid fanbase thriving. I didn’t buy this, but I’ll buy Dread and Prime 4 just to support the series.

Everything is right here. A melding of the Prime and traditional art styles, faithful physics with enhanced shooting mechanics, JUST enough depth to keep it Metroid while fixing the occasionally stale combat... My god, this was the perfect followup to the Prime 4 announcement.

@Kid Das It's a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus. A Game Boy title. It was my least favorite in the main series, but this should fix that. Tho, AM2R (a fanmade remake of the same game) already did that. In fact, AM2R is now my favorite 2D Metroid. However, this will probably be just as good. They both bring new ideas to the old game, so play them both. ;p
Nintendo is probably saving Prime 4 release date for a Metroid Nintendo Direct before Pax West at beginning of September since its in Seattle this year right by Nintendo of America headquaters. Chronologically MMetroid 2 (i.e Samus Returns) takes place immediately following the events of Prime three so it wouldn't surprise me if the game comes out this year as a surprise holiday announcement to support connectivity between Samus Returns and Prime 4 like what Fusion and the first Prime did
I like the Melee attack. It makes sense she can wane in with physical attacks. She WAS trained under the Chozo who were the elite of the elite warrior alien race. The fact she was infused with Chozo DNA speak for itself on her physical prowess and super Olympian physic. All of it mastered at the age of 14 more or less. Man I'm just ecstatic for her return. Nintendo's First Lady has really returned!
Well actually if you read the manga (which you should because its pretty good and you can read it for free online) you would know the chozo in fact were not an elite warrior race. They were a peaceful species, and refused to fight no matter what. out of all the chozo, only 2 (maybe 1, but the odds of this new chozo in metroid dread being Gray are incredibly slim) ever went against their peaceful ways, even choosing to be brutally killed at the hands of Ridley.
2017 is gonna be the year of one metroid game. Prime 4 is not releasing in 2017, and likely not even 2018. If they didn't even show gameplay of any sort, it's still 2 years or more off.
Fun fact-this melee attack was apparently featured before in Other M. Odd game to take inspiration from, but considering how awesome it looks to punch away monsters, it seems like it was a good choice.
tbh, i'm glad they brought back the cinematic badassery of Other M because the plot and rest of the game just... ruined the whole point of even having it there. i mean, now we can have both the badass, and the exploration and isolation, without... what we all know made other m the laughingstock of the series.
Ever since I saw how her character plays in Super Smash Bros., I always wanted to see a Metroid game where she also fights the alien creatures that stand in her way using physical strength. Metroid Other M gave me that, so I was happy with the basic combat system in that game. Plus, Metroid Other M's combat system was basically a 3D version of the traditional side-scrolling Metroid games, so it would not surprise me that some of its features can translate well into this remake of Metroid 2. So far, my only other wish is that this game would feature (at least some) environments that possess a similar darkness, grittiness, and foreboding atmosphere that the Metroid Prime trilogy (or Super Metroid and Fusion) had. Considering that Metroid is partly inspired by the Alien franchise and Lovecraftian imagery, it works the best when it is not always bright, colorful, and clean-looking.
To be honest Other M would have had some really good gameplay if they let us use a god damned nunchuck or a pro controller. Really just anything with a joystick. Being limited to a sideways WiiMote was just horrible.

Wii U doesn't much attention these days because Nintendo is finally starting to realize their "motion control" priority in most video game releases is what has caused their popularity on their home console to fall short in lieu of Sony and Microsoft. The Switch is their comeback and they're starting to once again catch back up.

High Commander Iron Ted it would be neat if the omega was a bit more like the praetorian xenomorph but not too much change from the fusion design. As much as I hate to say it but the queen design from that which shall not be named was pretty good. Maybe give it a crest like the xenomorph queen.
There were only about 5 Omega Metroids in the original game and I think some people forget why Omega and Zeta Metroids were so dangerous in comparison the prior forms. See, Fusion's Omega was flawed; when Metroids Molt, they become immune to cold. Omega and Zetas also defy gravity and have the ability to phase through solid walls. This is how they attack you. They are iconic enough and I don't want them to get too off design, nor do I want people to forget the horror that is the first Zeta who guards the Screw attack, or the Omega Nest. *shudders*

To those who think by not buying this out of respect for AM2R, you are clearly mistaken. That project was made out of passion for the Metroid series and so for it to return and NOT give it your support, you are giving it a big middle finger to this game, AM2R and Metroid fans. Support this game!

AM2R is the better experience anyways, I doubt this game will capture the sense of loneliness and the dark thematic AM2R had. And I'm not saying AM2R is giving it a new vision in the remake, remember that Super Metroid does the same, implying that this action based remake (As you can see, it has a machine gun in it) will not do the job.
The Other M had poor game mechanics- aiming in 1st person and switching back to 3rd made it Shakey and frustrating to play. I eventually got tired of dying, as much as I felt the game had potential.
you should start with the Metroid Prime Trilogy Pack. i don't know if it's on the virtual console, but you can find hard copies for the wii and by extension wii-u. Super Metroid and a few others are on 3DS E-Shop if i remember correctly
Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA is also pretty solid and is a remake of the very first Metroid game, which also happens to be the first chronologically. Although Metroid games tend to give a pretty solid summary of everything the player needs to know about the story anyway. Also the Metroid Prime Trilogy is in fact on the Wii U's Eshop for its Virtual Console. If you like the idea of sci-fi themed exploration on an unknown planet all on your own, you can't possibly hate the games.
Zero Mission and the Prime Trilogy are definitely great places to start. Although it's fanmade, AM2R is also stellar if you want a taste of Metroid 2 modernized.
dude , still the fan-based community needs to express themselves in their own way. AM2R is a Awesome Recreation of a game long passed in the hardware department and still gave us(the community) hope that Nintendo would put their thinking hats on and look at that passionate developer and fan of the series to make a 8-9 years of making- game and still looks impressive to this day and makes it like a pseudo-sequel to Metroid 2. And they also announced "Metroid Prime 4" (With the Menu sountrack from Metroid Prime :D) being developed by a new development team with Kensuke Tanabe as producer, wich was also the main producer of Metroid Prime!

The reason I never downloaded AM2R, I was waiting for the day Nintendo would officially make a Metroid 2 remake themselves. Although The ironic thing is I kinda want to play AM2R now so I can get a bit of a comparison.

But the difference here is that this game is much closer to the original style of Metroid. Other M was too experimental, and ended up a failure mostly 'cause of how much it differed from the series
It's incredible that they have gotten some series vets to make this game. People can be ignorant, but Sakamoto working on this is great. 1 failure hardly invalidates plenty of successes, and he's done well with 2D Metroid. Takehiko Hosokawa is the director. He was the graphics designer for Metroid 2, system director and game designer for Fusion, and a level designer for Zero Mission. He's also doing the level design as well. You then have Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano as composers. They both worked on Super, Zero Mission, and Corruption, and between the 2 of them they've been involved in almost every Metroid, with Other M being the exception. This game could very well become one of the greatest Metroids of all time.
The gameplay doesn't look right, and the animations don't look as seamless. Not to mention the graphic design and animations don't look as badass. With these in mind, it looks like it'll be very hard for this game to be the greatest Metroid game.
Cedars I disagree on that. 2D metroid has never been about presentation, especially given that they've mostly been on weak handhelds (bar Super) anyway. All I'm saying is that some serious talent is working on this game, and the map, World layout and Metroids all look superb. It also is nice that after 20 years we are getting new combat mechanics. Granted it could still be bad, but I really doubt that at this point.

Ive never completed Fusion since it was included in that ambassador program for 3DS...took me years to get past that spider like boss and after that...

I can't say I like the graphics, but I'm just excited for a new metroid platformer. I'm so proud of Nintendo for doing both a new platformer and a new prim game.
RUclips compression makes anything look worse compared to source quality. Plus they did some upscaling to make the image bigger for presentation, and upscaling is never a good thing. It will look much better on an actual 3DS.
Not to late to change that. And this would be a good place to start, only Zero Mission comes before it and honestly the only common link is the Metroids.
A true fan would play all of the games a franchise has to offer. Play Other M & MPFF to if you get the chance. They're not spectacular, but that doesn't mean they have nothing to offer.
There's a difference between being a fan and a sheep. Saying he should play MPFF crosses the line into being a sheep. Other M was okay, but the combat was repetitive, the story was dumb and the areas were uninspired.
Ray01X I never picked up Other M, and still feel dumb about it. It might be hard to take seriously, but I saw some of its bosses, and they look fantastic. Ridley, Phantoon, Nightmare, Mother Brain... excellent throwbacks, even if that's all they are. I need to play the game eventually, cos it just feels like the fanbase only looks at the negative points for that game.

I just seen something else. At the beginning of the trailer when the first metriod is introduced if you look at the bottom left of the screen there is either dead humans or space pirates, can't really tell if you do let us know.

I was looking at the box art of the original metriod 2 for the gameboy and the box art for metriod return of samus for the 3ds and what is similar about the two is that she is in the same pose as the original gameboy.

It's a remake of Metroid II: The Return of Samus. A Game Boy title. It was my least favorite in the main series, but this should fix that. Tho, AM2R (a fanmade remake of the same game) already did that. In fact, AM2R is now my favorite 2D Metroid. However, this will probably be just as good. They both bring new ideas to the old game, so play them both. ;p
This is just like when Fusion and Prime came out at the same time!

Nintendo is probably saving Prime 4 release date for a Metroid Nintendo Direct before Pax West at beginning of September since its in Seattle this year right by Nintendo of America headquaters. Chronologically MMetroid 2 (i.e Samus Returns) takes place immediately following the events of Prime three so it wouldn't surprise me if the game comes out this year as a surprise holiday announcement to support connectivity between Samus Returns and Prime 4 like what Fusion and the first Prime did

I like the Melee attack. It makes sense she can wane in with physical attacks. She WAS trained under the Chozo who were the elite of the elite warrior alien race. The fact she was infused with Chozo DNA speak for itself on her physical prowess and super Olympian physic. All of it mastered at the age of 14 more or less. Man I'm just ecstatic for her return. Nintendo's First Lady has really returned!

Well actually if you read the manga (which you should because its pretty good and you can read it for free online) you would know the chozo in fact were not an elite warrior race. They were a peaceful species, and refused to fight no matter what. out of all the chozo, only 2 (maybe 1, but the odds of this new chozo in metroid dread being Gray are incredibly slim) ever went against their peaceful ways, even choosing to be brutally killed at the hands of Ridley.

Fun fact-this melee attack was apparently featured before in Other M. Odd game to take inspiration from, but considering how awesome it looks to punch away monsters, it seems like it was a good choice.
tbh, i'm glad they brought back the cinematic badassery of Other M because the plot and rest of the game just... ruined the whole point of even having it there. i mean, now we can have both the badass, and the exploration and isolation, without... what we all know made other m the laughingstock of the series.
Ever since I saw how her character plays in Super Smash Bros., I always wanted to see a Metroid game where she also fights the alien creatures that stand in her way using physical strength. Metroid Other M gave me that, so I was happy with the basic combat system in that game. Plus, Metroid Other M's combat system was basically a 3D version of the traditional side-scrolling Metroid games, so it would not surprise me that some of its features can translate well into this remake of Metroid 2.
So far, my only other wish is that this game would feature (at least some) environments that possess a similar darkness, grittiness, and foreboding atmosphere that the Metroid Prime trilogy (or Super Metroid and Fusion) had. Considering that Metroid is partly inspired by the Alien franchise and Lovecraftian imagery, it works the best when it is not always bright, colorful, and clean-looking.
To be honest Other M would have had some really good gameplay if they let us use a god damned nunchuck or a pro controller. Really just anything with a joystick.
Being limited to a sideways WiiMote was just horrible.

Wii U doesn't much attention these days because Nintendo is finally starting to realize their "motion control" priority in most video game releases is what has caused their popularity on their home console to fall short in lieu of Sony and Microsoft. There were only about 5 Omega Metroids in the original game and I think some people forget why Omega and Zeta Metroids were so dangerous in comparison the prior forms. See, Fusion's Omega was flawed; when Metroids Molt, they become immune to cold. Omega and Zetas also defy gravity and have the ability to phase through solid walls. This is how they attack you. They are iconic enough and I don't want them to get too off design, nor do I want people to forget the horror that is the first Zeta who guards the Screw attack, or the Omega Nest. *shudders*

you should start with the Metroid Prime Trilogy Pack. i don't know if it's on the virtual console, but you can find hard copies for the wii and by extension wii-u. Super Metroid and a few others are on 3DS E-Shop if i remember correctly
I was planning to do just that! Still, that, Prime 4, and Returns will be my first foray into the Metroid franchise, and I'm excited!
Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA is also pretty solid and is a remake of the very first Metroid game, which also happens to be the first chronologically. Although Metroid games tend to give a pretty solid summary of everything the player needs to know about the story anyway.
Also the Metroid Prime Trilogy is in fact on the Wii U's Eshop for its Virtual Console. If you like the idea of sci-fi themed exploration on an unknown planet all on your own, you can't possibly hate the games.
Zero Mission and the Prime Trilogy are definitely great places to start. Although it's fanmade, AM2R is also stellar if you want a taste of Metroid 2 modernized.

dude , still the fan-based community needs to express themselves in their own way. AM2R is a Awesome Recreation of a game long passed in the hardware department and still gave us(the community) hope that Nintendo would put their thinking hats on and look at that passionate developer and fan of the series to make a 8-9 years of making- game and still looks impressive to this day and makes it like a pseudo-sequel to Metroid 2.

And they also announced "Metroid Prime 4" (With the Menu sountrack from Metroid Prime :D) being developed by a new development team with Kensuke Tanabe as producer, wich was also the main producer of Metroid Prime!

It's incredible that they have gotten some series vets to make this game. People can be ignorant, but Sakamoto working on this is great. 1 failure hardly invalidates plenty of successes, and he's done well with 2D Metroid.
Takehiko Hosokawa is the director. He was the graphics designer for Metroid 2, system director and game designer for Fusion, and a level designer for Zero Mission. He's also doing the level design as well.
You then have Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano as composers. They both worked on Super, Zero Mission, and Corruption, and between the 2 of them they've been involved in almost every Metroid, with Other M being the exception.
This game could very well become one of the greatest Metroids of all time.
Hope you're right; but we'll see soon.
The gameplay doesn't look right, and the animations don't look as seamless. Not to mention the graphic design and animations don't look as badass. With these in mind, it looks like it'll be very hard for this game to be the greatest Metroid game.
Cedars I disagree on that. 2D metroid has never been about presentation, especially given that they've mostly been on weak handhelds (bar Super) anyway. All I'm saying is that some serious talent is working on this game, and the map, World layout and Metroids all look superb. It also is nice that after 20 years we are getting new combat mechanics. Granted it could still be bad, but I really doubt that at this point.

Super needs the remake more than any other Metroid Game now. Super Metroid has aged really poorly, from only an alright base game.
Ive never completed Fusion since it was included in that ambassador program for 3DS...took me years to get past that spider like boss and after that...

I can't say I like the graphics, but I'm just excited for a new metroid platformer. I'm so proud of Nintendo for doing both a new platformer and a new prim game.
Angelo Rosales the graphics look to be pretty similar FE Echoes' graphics, which is saying something since that looks great.
3DS graphics never look good on RUclips but they do on the 3DS. Take Pokemon for example
RUclips compression makes anything look worse compared to source quality. Plus they did some upscaling to make the image bigger for presentation, and upscaling is never a good thing. It will look much better on an actual 3DS.

Now's a good time to become one. Play Zero Mission, Super Metroid, Fusion, and the Prime Trilogy while you wait for this and Prime 4 to come out.
Not to late to change that. And this would be a good place to start, only Zero Mission comes before it and honestly the only common link is the Metroids.
A true fan would play all of the games a franchise has to offer.
Play Other M & MPFF to if you get the chance. They're not spectacular, but that doesn't mean they have nothing to offer.
There's a difference between being a fan and a sheep. Saying he should play MPFF crosses the line into being a sheep.
Other M was okay, but the combat was repetitive, the story was dumb and the areas were uninspired.
Ray01X I never picked up Other M, and still feel dumb about it. It might be hard to take seriously, but I saw some of its bosses, and they look fantastic. Ridley, Phantoon, Nightmare, Mother Brain... excellent throwbacks, even if that's all they are. I need to play the game eventually, cos it just feels like the fanbase only looks at the negative points for that game.

metroid fan boy c-_-c Iol man no it's just a 9 year old me thought he never he see the day he saw another good Metroid game after 2007 😂. I'm 17 now and this was a great day watching the stream with my friends and stuff. I think I have the right to fanboy as I please. Though I will admit the Microsoft and Sony presentations were good too. I wish the best of luck to all the consoles 😄.

Play Super Metroid first, then Zero Mission, then the Prime games, and then play Metroid 1 and 2.

Just don't bother with Other M. It is hot garbage.
Try AM2R. An amazing fan remake of Metroid 2 and propably the best pixel-graphics 2D Metroid.
I hope in a future Smash Bros, this new Melee attack becomes part of her moveset. Maybe a new Forward Smash or an Up Smash....or heck, make this be her new Jab!

if you look at samus's arm cannon you can change your beam weapons just like in metriod prime.
I just seen something else. At the beginning of the trailer when the first metriod is introduced if you look at the bottom left of the screen there is either dead humans or space pirates, can't really tell if you do let us know.

I was looking at the box art of the original metriod 2 for the gameboy and the box art for metriod return of samus for the 3ds and what is similar about the two is that she is in the same pose as the original gameboy.

On the one hand yes. On the other hand: This is what he always wanted: A remake of his favourite game. And he sort of contributed to the making of this game. Nintendo noticed there was a market for Metroid 2 by the sheer hype of the fans.
