The song is dedicated to actress Roseanna Arquette who was dating one of the band members at the time. For me, this is their best song in terms of the music and lyrics.
It was written by David Paich who said it was an amalgam of several past girlfriends. Arquette was dating Steve Porcaro (keyboards) at the time, and played along with the band that it was about her - but that was just hyping the song. It is by far my favorite from Toto.
Somewhere there's a... podcast, maybe a radio broadcast, of some people listening to the individual isolated tracks and having their minds BLOWN. Mine was blown because I didn't realize just how hard Lukather was going in that outro. If you can find it, it's GOLD.
“I never knew that losing you could ever heart so baaadd..”. The way he goes off-pitch at the end of the line makes the gut-punch feel just a bit more real, more personal.
Those of us who grew up listening to and watching West Side Story sometimes sit and count the references to that musical in this video. Some are obvious, like "Jets" on the wall, and the finger-snapping guys. Throw in Jeff Porcaro's shuffle beat, and it's an irresistible watch and listen.
This was a big radio hit, especially on the factory floor! Then that official music video hit MTV, and forget about it - that was 'all she wrote'! It won a Grammy for Record of The Year (awarded '83)and was at #2 on the Hot 100 for FIVE Consecutive Weeks. That half-time shuffle beat by Jeff Porcaro is famously called 'the Rosanna Shuffle' in music circles.
Wow, it's your first time hearing Rosanna? I do feel old now! Lol! Loved Toto! This takes me back to my college days when I was also working in a men's clothing store that sold high-fashion, trendy clothes of that time. We always had current popular music on. And most of the more popular songs we all knew the lyrics to and would sing along when we didn't have customers, and sometimes when we did! Lol!
Nice watching you be wowed by this. It'll will always be my fave of theirs. His gorgeous tenor to that melody. Then that beat and those horns. Think about the old 30s and 40s performances. Pretty awesome to be able to compare them to that.
Check out 'It's a Long Way There' by the 'Little River Band'. I'm a massive fan of Toto and you would love 'Little River Band' - awesome harmonies and insane guitar solos.
Hey Saeed, Great reaction to this awesome song! I don' know any other great songs from these guys, I'll bet other commenters do though, I didn't get out much in my youth! Ha!Ha!Ha!
@@SaeedReacts. Thank you for your reply! I'm feeling a bit better as the days go by! I knew you would get songs from other people. You have a fabulous day as well!
Drumming fun fact: Because Jeff Porcaro is not very flashy compared to other famous drummers, you might never tell what every aspiring drummer knows: this particular drum beat (called a half time shuffle) is the MOST difficult drum pattern of any pop/rock song ever to imitate *accurately* on the drums. It is 100% a deeply felt groove, and if you don't have that feel down in how you place the notes, it will be obvious you are faking it even when you technically play all the right notes.
@@SaeedReacts. Yeah it is a song that everyone knows is great, and also where you can isolate any element and be amazed at that individual's craft. The drumming foundation is really the biggest contribution to feeling the emotion of the song, because Jeff had mastered that particular drumming feel over years. He could actually play anything, but was especially known for this kind of groove. You can watch the first couple of minutes of this instructional drum video clip where Jeff explains where that famous/infamous rhythm came from ruclips.net/video/NMI81yIlT0Q/видео.html (he gets more technical in the rest of the clip, may or may not be interesting ; )

Patrick Swayze is in this video and the girl is Cynthia Rhodes. They were both in the movie " Dirty Dancing ".
I bet I've seen this video 100 times since it first came out on MTV. I recognized Cynthia but I had no idea Patrick Swayze was in it. Thanks !

My favorite Toto song!

Great observation!
Jeff Porcaro on the drums. A master!
That's the girl from Dirty dancing Cynthia Rhodes!
These guys were all accomplished studio/session musicians and decided to get together to form a band. Toto is Latin for "all" or "everything".
KNOW THIS BY HEART; WORD FOR WORD!.
LOVE LOVE THIS.

One of my favorite groups back then. I had all their tapes. Video is like West Side Story.
The first super group as they are all studio musicians at the top of their game LOL

I did react to Hold The Line! Such a great song.
I never listened to TOTO when I was young, thinking the name of the band was stupid. Boy was I wrong!
No, you're right. The name IS stupid. The music is anything but.
Came from: The Latin phrase in toto means "in all", "completely", "entirely", or "without exception".
