For the Worx Landroid - if your perimeter wire is cut and you can't find the cut. You can use a portable AM radio to find the cut. Set the radio to ~700-720kHz and you will hear interference on the radio with the antenna of the radio being right next to the perimeter wire. When the radio goes silent, you're either too far from your cable or you've found the cut.
I suggest you start looking around the area that you made your most recent repair(s). If you don't find the cut in those areas, then start at the base station and walk the perimeter.
Edit: if you don't have a portable AM radio, buy an underground wire locator. You'll disconnect the dock and plug in the tone generator to the perimeter wire and then trace the wire with the other half of the tool. This proved invaluable to me when the utility company planted a pipe in my yard and cut my cable. Since both sides of the cable were going straight down, I didn't hear a break in the signal interference from the AM radio.

I have a small 127m2 lawn - mostly weeds - in a garden that I am away from most of the time as my house is in France and I currently have to spend most of my time in England.
4 months ago I installed one of these to try to keep the weeds under control while I am away and I have to say that so far I am very impressed!
I am aware that the manufacturers don't encourage using the landroid while unattended but life's not that simple as we all know and I think they would do well to maybe try to cater to remote users by adding a user override on the app to take control after it has gone into outside of wire lockdown, even after it has shut down, and directional controls to the app to try to get it back within the wire should it stray - assuming the user has visual CCTV contact as I do!
My lawn is small but pretty uneven with a pronounced slope off around 2 sides and a fallen tree in one corner which is the main obstacle. I ran the guide wire on an isolated loop around this tree from the get go as I figured this would be prudent to keep the droid from getting stuck in the deep holes around the base and v-branch cul-de-sac at the other end.
However, this has thrown up the only snag to my cunning plan in that if the droid goes into return to home mode automatically and hits the isolated circuit around the tree first it will just keep going around the tree in edge mode until it gets stuck. I don't know for sure if it will work out that it's on a separate loop and go looking for the outer wire circuit because it gets stuck in one of those holes I mentioned first.
But that is the ONLY time it has got stuck so far and I now have 147 hours on the clock.
I already had a CCTV system on my garden but I upgraded the existing static mute camera to PTZ with sound and added a second for full coverage. So now I can see and hear when the weather is good to set the droid off manually and keep an eye on it.
I am now confident that there is no need to watch it while it's mowing but after 3 hours on a 4000mah battery it's time to call it home so I watch for when it's approaching the outer ring and hit the home button on the app. On the 4000mah battery sometimes it can go up to 4 hours and other times it will barely make 3 so it appears to vary the charge amount on a cycle which is why I need to keep an eye on it after 2 hours to make sure.
Next spring I will re install the guide wire taking in more of the lawn now that I know what it can cope with and miss out the fallen tree. For that I guess I will need to get the OFF LIMITS kit. It does have the anti collision eyes so I might try that first to see how it goes.
Hopefully then I will be able to leave it to run itself fully autonamously confident that it won't get stuck anywhere.
Once on CCTV I watched it get caught up in overhanging brambles that had grown out since I last left the place. It was tugging back and forth and I thought for sure it would give up, but it just kept pulling, reversing, pulling one way, reversing pulling another over and over until eventually it was free. I have seen it get stuck in a couple of places on the lawn and work itself free, it's very tenacious!
It also seems to learn as it hasn't got stuck in those places lately.
So a lesson there is to make sure that anything likely to grow and overhang while you are away should be mercilessly cut back.
Also, when it's really dry and the droid is in edge mode it will slide sideways on the one edge of the lawn a noticeable distance but it keeps going until it reacquires the wire and gets back on track.
My garden is next to a road but has a high wall so not easily accessible for anybody with ill intent. In anycase the droid has built in security including a PIN - make sure to change it from default!! - to turn it on and an alarm which sounds and sends an app notification if picked up. This would make it not a lot of use as it stands to a would be theif but someone might decide to help themselves to the battery.
One really good thing about the landroid from a security point of view is that it is so quiet it doesn't announce itself to the neighbourhood from an enclosed garden even when running.
I hope to make a video about it on my channel probably early next year but in the meantime I can thoroughly recommend!

I have employed my RoboMow robot lawnmower for over 3 years, it is designed to cut to the edge of lawns.
In early Spring it comes out (I program the schedule) 2 or 3 times a week then May to September every day and my lawn is fantastic with very few small weeds, some clover which I control if it expands too much and no moss.
It is one of my best purchases ever but not looking forward to buying a new battery when it fails but I will.

The brand I use (Moebot) has a model designed for 2500sqm (about 0.62 acres). It generally comes down to the battery size, so that it doesn't have to keep running back to charge too often and then starting from scratch again, thus never getting to the distant areas. You can also set "zones" on done models, which are based on the perimeter distance, so eg start at 50m 20% of the time - it'll follow the perimeter for 50m before it starts mowing for 1 in 5 restarts. The model I use can have up to 5 of these zones, so that can help spread it across a larger yard rather than always starting at the same place (the charger).

I've had my Moebot robot mower for 18 months now and I love it. Significantly cheaper than the landroid, tho you choose the time and frequency (it won't try to self-suggest) but that's not a big issue.
    Things for newbies to consider:
Get the model that suits your yard size. If they say it does 300sqm, don't try to use it on an acre! It is to do with the battery vs charging time ratio.
Replace the blades once or twice a year (once should be plenty if you don't mow in winter).
Slopes, esp if wet, can be an issue. Be conservative. If it says it can do a 35° slope, it will, but if that slope is running down to the boundary wire and it is damp, it can get stuck due to a lack of traction (or it might dig a hole, which over time can cause more problems).
All in all they are great devices, and I definitely recommend a good robot mower. I've seen some (Stihl's imower) that leave awful track marks, and have a huge heavy blade like a traditional mower. I'd steer clear of those!

well, the half acre version barely keeps up with a quarter acre area, but i have a issue with my yard in a couple of places from sandy soil and it gets stuck about every time it goes out, the wheels will turn up the grass rather than turn it due to the weight of the unit and the sandy ground and what seems to be a rather horrible programed wheel turn ratio rather than using differentials, i still thinki it is better than manually mowing though.
I have also had issues with the blades being dull but that part i think is my fault and ive been working to correct its area to avoid locations where sticks tend to be.

My Landroid (Yard2-D2) didn't work too well. It would spin the wheels and dig ruts. It would also get false lift alerts which would stop it, requiring a manual reset. A few simple mods fixed this. For the wheel spinning I just ran some long wood screws into the wheels and cut the heads off with a Dremel to make spikes. Fixed that problem. The false lifts (extremely frequent) were a little more involved. Cleaning didn't work. I had to partially disassemble it and remove one wheel lift sensor, tape the installed magnet to it and leave it removed from the wheel. This tricks the logic in the computer, which needs two wheel sensor inputs to detect a lift event. This is redundant. The internal gyro will still detect it being lifted, so this is not a safety concern and can be easily reversed if warranty work is needed. I would also advise against waiting more than a couple months between blade replacement. The screws have a tendency to get seized from extended exposure. The heads are small and strip easily. They can also break easily if using pliers to extract a stripped screw. That cost me a blade plate once (covered by warranty) but the down time of the machine was still a problem.
Another mod I did for fun was installing an outdoor wifi cam on it for an FPV perspective, plugged into the USB on the machine for power. I started live streaming it on RUclips when it runs. Search for Yard2-D2 if you want to see it in action.

The whole point of a robot mower is to be able to avoid regularly allocating time for manually cutting grass, however the problem with robot mowers in small town gardens like this one is that they can only do half the job. They do the easy bit of the job, by mowing the open area but then they leave the owner with the job of using a strimmer to do all the fiddly edges and internal corners.
If you are going to spend time doing that you might as well have just cut all the grass yourself. If the owner still has to do regular gardening work, then that makes it not worth the money from my perspective. If they ever fix that issue, I'll buy one.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:34 🤖 The Worx Landroid robot lawnmower is a suitable replacement for a traditional lawnmower, offering various models to fit different lawn sizes.
01:02 🌱 Robot lawnmowers can effectively replace traditional lawnmowers and are cost-effective considering the time they save.
01:59 🔄 Robot lawnmowers use a random pattern guided by a wire installed around the garden to ensure complete lawn coverage.
02:55 🚦 Robot lawnmowers rarely get stuck and can navigate around obstacles in your garden, making them reliable.
03:37 🏞️ You can exclude specific areas in your garden, like a pond, by setting up wires to create exclusion zones for the robot lawnmower.
04:34 ⛳ The terrain should be relatively flat and stable for optimal robot lawnmower performance, and you should fill in any holes.
05:03 🔌 If the wire gets cut, you can easily reconnect it using provided reconnectors, ensuring minimal hassle.
05:32 🤖 Robot lawnmowers are autonomous and do not require constant manual intervention. They handle mowing and charging by themselves.
06:13 🕒 The time it takes for a robot lawnmower to cover your lawn depends on its size, but it can be surprisingly quick.
06:41 ☔ Some robot lawnmowers, like the Worx model, do not mow in the rain to avoid damaging the grass in soggy conditions.
07:37 🍃 Robot lawnmowers cut the grass daily, leaving tiny clippings that decompose and nourish the lawn, eliminating the need for grass collection.
07:52 🧸 Be cautious about leaving objects on the lawn as robot lawnmowers, in their default mode, may run over them.
08:21 🚧 You can set up exclusion zones using magnetic wires or accessories to prevent the robot lawnmower from entering specific areas.
09:04 📡 Good Wi-Fi coverage is essential for the robot lawnmower's base station, and there are options to enhance connectivity.
09:44 🔒 There are security features, including a PIN number, to prevent unauthorized use or theft of the robot lawnmower.
10:57 🔋 The robot lawnmower uses a rechargeable battery that is easy to replace and has a long lifespan, especially with proper winter storage.
11:55 🧰 Setting up the wire for the robot lawnmower is a one-time process, and it can be less complicated than it initially seems.
14:30 🚂 Watching the robot lawnmower follow the wire path can be surprisingly enjoyable and satisfying.
15:13 ⌛ Robot lawnmowers save a significant amount of time and storage space, making them a highly recommended product for maintaining your lawn.

Awesome review, one question though, do I really need to setup the wire, I have about 10K square feet of fenced yard, rectangular in shape and pretty much no obstruction. You mentioned that the mower uses that wire as a guide to go back to it's charging station?

    • @BenVallack

Yeah the wire is needed for finding it’s way home and also for it’s ‘edge routine’ which it does periodically. It’s a bit laborious to peg down but not too bad really

Great video, thank you!!! How do I make it walk/run over to another part or section of the garden which is on the other side of a gravel walk of about 4 meters away?
So it's grass on one side - then a wide gravel /walk path of 4 meters - then more grass and I want it to cut that also.
Do I have to lift it over to that other side or can it walk over? Will it need to have the wire to follow to get there or is there a function on it that you can press to have it auto run to where you want it (like you can with a robot vacuum cleaner with remote control)?
I'd be very grateful for reply and ideas in how to do it.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  5 месяцев назад +1

If the gravel is flush with the grass it should be fine to just have your wire go around both areas with a corridor over the path. It will just go over the gravel into the other area by itself. Obviously you want to make sure the gravel isn't going to get hit by the blades. It will depend on the kind of gravel I guess as to if the wheels will sink into it too much and foul the blades. If you download the manual on the website you'll be able to see all the details of zones and corridors etc. Thanks!

I have owned a similar one for a few years now but eventually stopped using it because I got a dog and somehow he digs and breaks the wire. It's as if he's attracted by the current... strange. but the cable is such a pain to setup... in a small garden I guess it's ok but mine is quite large so I started looking into the newer ones that use GPS to set boundaries but those are very expensive in comparison so will wait until they go down in price.

Thanks - it's definitely better to have wifi as it knows the weather and anticipates the speed of grass growth etc to decide when and how long it should mow for. I think without it you'll need to just manually tell it to go out when you want it to - not 100% on that though.

Do all these robo mower docking stations all have to be placed on the Grass? I would imagine the grass around the dock would keep growing, , i have a nice area on some chuckies i would like a dock on,, when the mower is heading back to the dock,, are the blades still turning?

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  10 месяцев назад

I think the blades do keep cutting but as long as it’s all flush that shouldn’t matter. The theory is grass will still be cut around the dock. It’s just the back edge like the rest of the lawn edges that don’t make it.

Muddy areas are a bit of a disaster - it looses grip quickly and churns it up more. I would get it turfed over properly or exclude it. Sprinkler heads might be ok if they are big enough for it to bounce off. As long as it doesn’t end up on top of them it will turn around and carry on.

I also have had the Landroid for a year. It looks to me like your lawn is suffering similar consequences of using the Landroid that my lawn does. The grass at the boundary and the corners in particular get worn away. I can see that your boundaries are about 1/3 bare earth, 1/3 weeds and 1/3 grass. Prior to using the Landroid I had >90% healthy grass on the perimeter. Like you I had hoped it would be a time saver but once you factor in the setup and boundary wire adjustment time and the annual lawn renovation required to repair the damage, it's not at all worth it.
    The cause is that
    1) Landroid must follow the boundary wire to get to any zone
    2) because the razor blade cut so little area at a time, and due to the random pattern, it must go back and forth over the same area wearing out the grass
    3) in corners it must reverse and often when reversing it spins a wheel, digging up the grass leaving a bare patch
My conclusion it the Landroid is fine for someone who doesn't care about the health of their lawn but is fine as long as it is kept short (or even bare).
Reddit is full of Landroid owners trying to work around these issues by modifying their Landroid with weights or spikes on the wheels, or pegging chicken wire onto the lawn to avoid the digging damage.

      @BenVallack  Год назад

We had a patchy lawn due to various things, it’s now looking much better after some new turf and this summer with the Landroid. There have been a few cases of it churning up the soil but nothing accumulative - the main thing is not to override it and send it out in the rain. I’ll do a follow up but our lawn has never looked so good (and looks much better than in this video).

If you have a boundary wire on a slope of ANY kind, no matter how much, this mower is virtually worthless unless you have time to constantly watch it. I've only seen one youtuber rate them for this and I wish I had known before I bought it. With any moisture, It will spin it's wheels, dig ruts, fall outside the line, and you will be constantly going out to save it. Night time mowing is out of the question, dewy grass, no saviors around... The app may or may not notify you immediately, in 20 minutes, or not at all. I have found mine two feet outside the line in the street with just a slight slope at the curb.

Looks like fun if you only have one lawn, it's at the rear of the house, and you're averse to fresh air and/or exercise. If you have lawns at both the front and rear, you'll either need two robots and risk the one at the front being stolen or else have a conventional mower for the front, which you may as well then use for the rear too since you have it. Similarly, if your lawn's divided by a path or driveway, or it's springtime and you don't want the mower blundering through the primroses, bluebells, celandines, cowslips, forget-me-nots, etc., a conventional machine's more useful - until Tesla comes up with an AI version anyway! 😉
