I made several lines. Watched other videos. This is by far the best instruction video. After 9 lines on the boat including adding a snap shackle it became fun. I am a little disappointed that I am done with all my line spices. Oh wait, I have one more the rod kicker block and tackle set up. Happy days.
I've done a number of these but needed a refresher --- this is the BEST BY FAR of all instructions! He has removed many unnecessary and silly and confusing steps. Examples, include counting numbers of threads for the cover taper, and the exact measurement for the core bury. The tips for making sure tension is applied is brilliant. I did my third eye in 15 minutes. THANK YOU!
Andy, wonderful video and very clear. I had watched other videos and had difficulty following their process. However, you very clearly explained the objective (which is not always intuitive). I am trying to learn to spice to make some lead ropes for my wife to use with her horses and this tutorial was exactly what I needed. I managed to make three eye splices today to give to my wife for her birthday and our anniversary. Well done and thank you.
I agree with the other comments. I have searched for weeks and this is the best instructions I have found on splicing yet. I did my first splice last night with NO problems.... except for a blister or two.... much easier than trying to read the directions from paper or pdf file! THANKS!!
I absolutely agree Russell. I was struggling with splicing new halyards until I found this video. Great tutorial. Very well explained and walked me right into a perfect splice. Again, Great Job! Thanks
This video is far better than everything else out there. My first splice three years ago on decades-old line went smooth as butter following you instructions. Fast forward to this year, it's been about six months since my last splice so I wanted to make sure I was following along with someone who knew what they were doing. I forgot about your video, and made the mistake of watching someone else's video. Destroyed a very expensive line (and two others that weren't too expensive but frustrating nonetheless). Found your video again, worked on the first try.
Very nice demonstration. There are several double braid splicing demos online but, speaking as a beginner, this one is superior in its teaching technique. It doesn't go too quickly so as to make pausing between steps easy. I really enjoy watching pros do this kind of work. Another online demo shows a fellow doing this splice so fast as to make one's head spin. Great entertainment, but hard to disect for learning purposes. Thank you very much for providing such quality instruction.
Once again this gentleman is great at explaining this splice in a simple manner. By far the best video that I have come across on the web. His New England accent is Great!
I have watched and used many videos. This one is by far the best and most practical. His proportions are better, sequence is perfect, and the tips on how to finally bury the last of the cover and fully close the loop are perfect (be sure to smash it with a hammer to get that last little bit).
Great Video Andy, you really encouraged me to try splicing for myself. Got some line, fid's and off I went. My first attempt bunched the core at the join, but there after all good. Thanks for your very clear instructions.
I agree with prior comments: The best splicing video on RUclips! I've watched several others and followed their instructions with mixed results. I get a smooth and beautiful splice pretty easily every time following this video.
What a great explanation of the entire splice! The tips at the end for milking make all the difference. Thank you for sharing this trick of the trade. Really appreciate the information.
Thank you, thank you. Doing this is a bit like a Running Fix, there's some voodoo involved ! This man is a genius because he knows how to really teach.🎉
This video is fantastic! Thank you so much for posting. We were getting so frustrated trying again and again to splice a loop with no success. This video is clear and easy to follow with so many tips for better/easier splicing. You saved the day. Thank you! 💓
This guy is GREAT !!!!! I am just starting to learn how to splice and I have searched the internet for days on the subject and this is the BEST video. I wish this guy could do more videos on other types of splices. You are the BEST....Thanks so much for posting this.
It's amazing to watch someone who trully knows what he is doing when making a eye splce. Thank you very much for demystisying how one of these are done! After watching this I now feel confident to do my own.
2 books on splicing plus the written instructions from NE Ropes did nothing but confuse me. But this video made it clear and understandable. Success the first time! Magnificent! Thank you Andy.
Thanks for this video, I just did my first braided splice onto a stainless thimble! Thanks for slowing things down and taking the time to explain how it all works.
Brilliant, Ive watch many of these videos and most of them are confusing. This is real clear and concise leaving out all the thing you don't need to know and giving good reasons for for the thing you do. I say again, brilliant.
Compared to other videos on this subject I found this one the best of all of them. The one thing I found to help on the final step was to use a rubber handled hammer in the loop. While pulling on the loop I rolled the hammer handle and the cover came up without a problem. On one I didn't even need to tug much on the loop and the eye finished very neatly. Thanks for giving me the confidence to learn this.
Congratulations and a big thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the boating community. With your step-by-step explanation I was able to do it right the first time. Thanks again.
I watched three other videos. This is the one that got me to nearly perfect eye splice including a thimble. The hints about milking the cover before reinserting the core and also about NOT milking the cover before putting the loop under tension were key! You may need to practice 2 or 3 times but do it like this and you will get it!
This is years after your video was posted. I thank you very much for your explanation of how to do an eye splice. I've watched many videos on this and yours is the best, based on my humble opinion. Would like to buy you a beer depending on where you are. Pat from St Augustine FL.
After banging my head against a wall using the cheapest fids available (plastic, little barbs didn't help) and a practice rope that apparently was too tightly woven, I grabbed a little better quality rope, better fids, an awl/pusher, and this video. First time through, pausing to keep up, perfect result. Looks better than the factory splice at the other end. And he's right, the last part is pretty fun and rewarding.
Thanks for the vid, your explanations were extremely handy. When I got to the last part with the bench hook I thought it couldn't possibly work and suddenly it was done - it was like a magic trick
I wish I had started with this video. I watched three others and never had a successful splice. In this video you revealed the secret to the final milking! That's all I needed to finish off an earlier splice I had put aside as a failure. Thank you!!!!
Watching this guy work is like a kid watching a magician. You KNOW what he is going to do and yet you KNOW he can't do it...yet he does. I was waiting for him to snap that loop end and undo the whole damn knot. Excellent instructional video.
What a great video. Thank you so much. So many other videos try to hide a few details to keep splicing a 'dark art'. This video shows everything and is extremely well presented. Thank you!
Gerat video. I am getting ready to pull a dinghy that weighs about 800 lbs and this video has taken all of the fear of double braided splicing and parked it! Thank you!
Sir, I thank you for presenting this in such a simple way. It gave me the courage to create a couple eye splices that I needed for a fence post driver. It does seem confusing at the start, but after watching this video several times, I grabbed the rope and did it. It looked beautiful.
Hello and thank you for the great video. Can you tell me where I can find the feeders needed to make that type of splice ?. I have to make the splices on tops of 28 and 22 millimeters. Thank you
This is a great video except for the part at 11:40 where he says it's a simple easy splice to do. As splices go, this one is neither simple nor easy, but the well explained steps can be mastered with a little determination. It is a handy & valuable splice to know. Thank you for an excellent demonstration.
Bravo, très bonne explication, ça longtemps que j'essayai sans succès. Après avoir visionné cette très explicite vidéo, je n'ai plus de problème pour faire ce type d'épissure.
Well done! I'm new to this and your video is a huge help. Initially, I struggled pushing the core through the cover. So, I started removing a few core strands near the end. Then, I was able to tape it tightly enough to fit the end into my fid and use my pusher effectively. I'm splicing 1/4" rope and using an old blunted pick as a pusher. Also, I made the mistake of buying rope with a white cover. It would be easier to dig the core out if they (the core and the cover) were clearly distinguishable from each other.
Thanks, I have to say that this video covered in clear detail many of the pro tips that other splicing videos leave out like how to use the pusher, tying s stopper knot in the cover where others put a needle in and it falls out and how to pull the cover back over the splice. I'll be using this video from now on!
Does this type of spicing work to put two ends together? That is, cutting out chaffed section and then rejoining the cut ends to produce a straight line (no eye).
Requiescat in pace Andy - he also taught me to make each mark with a different color marker. And For the first two marks delineating the loop size I use a marker the same color as any markings on the line.
Hey this was a great demonstration. My first 4 tries turned out great and I was really surprised at the finish of the splice. Thank you for the assistance
Thanks for a great video.Best I have found. My first attempt following along was successful. Questions: what lines are best for splicing? The line I used had a very tight cover that didn't have much give making it harder that your example looked.
Thank you very much for this video, I have learned to splice and made quite a few sets of reins and leadropes for my horse now. :) Very clear instructions, :)
I have to say i LOVE this video, and respect the elderly gentleman :-) Just made my first double braid splice BUT forgot to splice around what it needed to be attatched to. Now I have a useless but perfect eyesplice haha. I will have to have another go... Thanks for a great video. Best regards from Denmark
Thank you so much Andy! I have been trying to follow diagrams & getting in a muddle. Making lead ropes... did my first splice beautifully, but forgot to put the clip snap in, LOL!!!!!!! With a bit more practice I'm sure I will get the hang of it... you made it easy!
I've done a few of these but always need the instructions that came with my fids, and there aren't enough photos in the instructions! I've watched a lot of splicing videos, because I want to get it right, and this is the best I've seen. Gonna have to take an iPad to my boat - I need to splice to the mainsheet traveller car, it doesn't come off, so I've got to do it in situ. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.
hi nice demo!!! i made a few splice but i always end up whit a short lenght like 2 inch of cover that has nos core inside just before the cross over, why that? thanks
I made several lines. Watched other videos. This is by far the best instruction video. After 9 lines on the boat including adding a snap shackle it became fun. I am a little disappointed that I am done with all my line spices. Oh wait, I have one more the rod kicker block and tackle set up. Happy days.

out of all the double braid eye splicing videos I've watched, this is my go to. It actually makes sense and is easy to follow.
Great to hear this Russell! Thanks for letting us know :)
I absolutely agree Russell. I was struggling with splicing new halyards until I found this video. Great tutorial. Very well explained and walked me right into a perfect splice. Again, Great Job! Thanks
I feel obligated to thank you for this video every 20 times i watch it...
Thanks again!
Brilliant video. The only one that lets a beginner get a good result. Thank you
So detailed and so easy to understand. Best instructional video I've seen. You not only make it look easy you make it easy to do. Thank you.

without any doubt this has to be the best guide I've seen on splicing double braid

This is the best tutorial we’ve seen for an eye-splice in double-braid. Bravo!

I've made MANY hand-spliced dog leashes following these instructions. Thanks for the artistic inspiration.
This guy is GREAT !!!!! I am just starting to learn how to splice and I have searched the internet for days on the subject and this is the BEST video. I wish this guy could do more videos on other types of splices. You are the BEST....Thanks so much for posting this.

Thank you for this simple, easy to follow video. My wife and I completely replaced all the running rigging for our 28' Hunter in just one day!
this video has made every line on my sailboat look sharp and durable for racing!!!! thank you!
Terrific video! Thanks for the very clear step-by-step instructions. You make it look easy!
Awesome video with clear instructions, and he gives steps to avoid common mistakes!
2 books on splicing plus the written instructions from NE Ropes did nothing but confuse me. But this video made it clear and understandable. Success the first time! Magnificent! Thank you Andy.

I watched a bunch of other videos, but this is the only one that makes sence and explains. Did a perfect one after 3 tries
Compared to other videos on this subject I found this one the best of all of them. The one thing I found to help on the final step was to use a rubber handled hammer in the loop. Excellent. I have attempted several times and this finally got me through it!
THANK YOU!!! Tried following Samson video and it was horrible. You helped salvage my sanity.
Congratulations and a big thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the boating community.

Great class. I tries a few others on youtube but this is the one the that showed the best way to finish the splice for me..
amazingly well done instructional video ....and a man who knows his stuff ..thanks a bunch
Great. Thanks to your video I made a perfect splice in 20 minutes! So happy 😀
Best video on this that I’ve seen. Thank you.
Probably the best video of this splice, and I’ve done a few!
This is years after your video was posted. I thank you very much for your explanation of how to do an eye splice. I've watched many videos on this and yours is the best, based on my humble opinion. Would like to buy you a beer depending on where you are.

I miss doing this type of type work! I wish I could get more practice again and get back into splicing and sailing!!!!
I wish I had started with this video. I watched three others and never had a successful splice. In this video you revealed the secret to the final milking! That's all I needed to finish off an earlier splice I had put aside as a failure. Thank you!!!!
At last a clear, easy, simple and understandable a video about splicing; I subscribe !
Thanks to New England Ropes for it and all the others
Double braid has always been intimidating to me, Andy thanks for making me confident
Could you recommend a beginners kit and book
August 26, 2022 currently at Coast Guard Station Abay watching this while splicing line with several of my BM. Thanks 🙏 much love.
Watching this guy work is like a kid watching a magician. You KNOW what he is going to do and yet you KNOW he can't do it...yet he does. I was waiting for him to snap that loop end and undo the whole damn knot. Excellent instructional video.
Thanks for the bury tips at the end, and making a video with a real person in it. Much easier to understand than Samson's video.
Excellent video. The best instructional video for a splice that I have been able to find. Well done.
Great tutorial. One of the best i have seen. I will be able to follow these instructions with out blood sweat and tears.
What a great video. Thank you so much. So many other videos try to hide a few details to keep splicing a 'dark art'. This video shows everything and is extremely well presented. Thank you!
Great video. Is it possible to eye splice double braid with MULTIPLE cores? How is this done?
Thanks for posting this! I was able to follow along step by step & make my first double braid eye splice. Only several more to go.
I've seen a lot of instruction videos, tried and failed. But this one did it for me! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Gerat video. I am getting ready to pull a dinghy that weighs about 800 lbs and this video has taken all of the fear of double braided splicing and parked it! Thank you!
This was very good. I especially appreciate you taking the time to go over the snaps at the end.
Excellent, thank you for the helpful and easy instructions.....The BEST
Sir, I thank you for presenting this in such a simple way. It gave me the courage to create a couple eye splices that I needed for a fence post driver. It does seem confusing at the start, but after watching this video several times, I grabbed the rope and did it. It looked beautiful.
Thank you, you helped me see my mistakes and I now get a good splice on 1" (24mm) double braid.
Hello and thank you for the great video.
Can you tell me where I can find the feeders needed to make that type of splice ?.
I have to make the splices on tops of 28 and 22 millimeters.
Thank you
Best video on splicing I have seen yet.
Great job. Best video on splicing on the web. I'd love to come to your shop and just watch you make a splice one time, you are a master!
The first video I was able to follow and actually slice and eye. GREAT JOB!

Great job! I tried it and had great results. Thanks - you saved me from wasting the line I bought for a halyard.
It's way simpler and easier vs the one I followed before!! ... thank you!
This really made it easier for me. Hint: Colored sharpies for color-coding your marks.
Best Splice video I have found, well done!! My search is over I fully understand this fellows process. Thank you.
Thanks, I have to say that this video covered in clear detail many of the pro tips that other splicing videos leave out like how to use the pusher, tying s stopper knot in the cover where others put a needle in and it falls out and how to pull the cover back over the splice. Great video, but is there not another step to secure the splice? I believe you are also required to stitch the splice for added security.
great video very simple what is the load rating on the eye splice? ie. can it be used as a tow line or descending line?
The best video I have seen for this. Thanks. Andy UK
First successful splice! Thank you!!!
Thank You for your Vote of confidence in me. Sailor still struggling, but catching on finally.
Thanks for a great video.Best I have found. My first attempt following along was successful. Questions: what lines are best for splicing? The line I used had a very tight cover that didn't have much give making it harder that your example looked.
Thank you sir, excellent and simple tutorial. Much appreciated
Thank you very much for this video, I have learned to splice and made quite a few sets of reins and leadropes for my horse now. :) Very clear instructions, :)
This by far to me has been the most simple but most specific videos . I’ve watched a bunch but all seem complicated 😅
I have to say i LOVE this video, and respect the elderly gentleman :-)
Just made my first double braid splice BUT forgot to splice around what it needed to be attatched to. Now I have a useless but perfect eyesplice haha. I will have to have another go... Thanks for a great video. Best regards from Denmark
A lizard, a short length of rope with an eye at one end is never useless, so it's all good practice. If nothing else it makes a spare fender rope.
To this day the best double braid splicing tutorial out there.
best instructions on RUclips , thank you !!!
you make it look so simple. :-) Thank you for sharing. I've done this before but had to get the instructions from a book.
Excellent and easy-to-follow instructional! Thank you, and smooth sailing!
I followed along and got a perfect splice. I added a thimble because I was making a mooring line. Thank you for the good video.
Thank you so much. My first splice looks professional and i saved myself $15.
hi nice demo!!! i made a few splice but i always end up whit a short lenght like 2 inch of cover that has nos core inside just before the cross over, why that?
thanks
best teacher in the world. I can now splice db Thanks
I am glad for the video but on 7/16 sta-set getting the fid through the shell and passed the core is a bear! Any tips?
