As an RX owner, I thought I would share that Lexus will fit some security plates for you FOC that go some way to thwarting one of their vulnerabilities. I’ve also deactivated keyless in the menus and put a steering lock on if parked away from home. Hope this helps someone.

We had our Q5 taken from our driveway 3 weeks ago. The house was broken into and a set of keys taken, some cash from my wallet and nothing else touched. The police have been excellent but regrettably it’s just a sign of these times we live in - you have something “nice” and other folks want it. 😢

I thought it was funny that Land Rover are claiming their cars aren't the most stolen cars in the UK. But when you look at the numbers as a percentage of vehicles on the road, they are by far the worst. Almost three times as high as Mercedez which is the next highest.

Carzy thing with the Lexus is that there are clips on youtube showing how thieves gain access to the security module through front wheel arch.

Great video as always. Sad to see so many thefts but it would have been good to see percentage of the cars stolen against the number on the road. Trouble is the prisons are so full those responsible are back out in no time and that is if they get caught. Noticed a comment about putting Air Tags in your vehicle, unfortunately they notify anyone nearby unless you drill through a specific point on the tag!

Hi, Advice for anyone with a Lexus/Toyota, I had my Lexus RX stollen in Oct 2022, the thieves did not need access to the keys, I had keyless entry disabled and my keys were in faraday bags, the entry point was that they physically hacked into the wiring harness by removing the trim from the front wheel arch and disconnecting the front headlights and connecting to the wires, took less then 2 minutes for them to unlock start the car and drive off! I advise driveway bollards, a steering lock and an aftermarket immobiliser such as ghost or equivalent… this issue is effecting most of Lexus/toyota models where wiring can be easily accessed by the removal of external trim which explains the sharp increase in thefts, car manufacturers need to start applying security such as encryption to the can bus or not allowing such easy access to the ECU through easily accessible wiring

Lexus/toyota have also addressed this issue recently buy offering a free security plate to block access to the vulnerability, I highly recommend anyone with a Lexus/toyota to get in touch with their local dealership who will install free of charge

👍👍👍 Good morning Jim, in my youth Manchester and Swansea were always vying for the car theft capital of the UK. These thefts were down to joy-riders, if the vehicles weren't written off they could usually recovered. However times have changed It seems to be organised gangs are now stealing for profit. Thanks for the info Jim.

Why haven't the Police used bait cars in and around the worst area's to catch these gangs if they claim they are working with manufacturers to combat the thefts? One answer i know of and they say let your insurance deal with the theft and claim. 🤔 Lazy policing.

Had a Morris marina stolen back in the day ( yep that old ) . They hammered a nail down the ignition barrel. bent the nail to start it. Police found it at a local pub two days later and it started the same way when I came and collected it. Think they realised how sh!t it was so just left it.🤣

IMHO JLR are in denial. Believe that by advertising they will make all the problems disappear. Their MD in the UK has already stated that JLR are NOT the most stolen vehicles and doesn't understand where the figures come from. Well they came from the government according to an article on BBC News site. I love Range Rovers but with the security problems and the cost of insurance, it's not on my Birthday or Christmas list. Keep up the good work. Sadly Winchester is about 3 hours plus from me. All best and hope it goes well.

Numbers of stolen Kia and Hyundai are also high in USA and has been linked to a loophole in the security system. Owners have sued for this. Not surprised the same numbers are being seen over here.

I was under the impression that the US KIA/Hyundai thefts were due to the fact that the US models didn't have immobilisers as standard so all that was needed was a USB plug once the steering column was messed with. However, in the UK immobilisers have been mandatory since before 2000 IIRC; so I am not sure how the UK cars are being targeted. I'm particularly interested as I have a KIA (non-keyless), but can't seem to find any more info.

Earlier Toyota RAV4’s are an easy target via the front nearside wheel arch gaining access to the CanBus. Toyota offer a steel plate upgrade to prevent this, later RAV’s not affected.

    • @nigelturner3251

I believe it’s the latest Hybrid model RAV’s that are the targets. The plug in Hybrids have an updated CanBus so are not as vulnerable. Toyota are aware so it is best to check with your local dealer. A steel plate can be fitted to stop the attack through the wheel arch into the headlight.

Also how old are the models most commonly stolen - JLR IIRC is retro fitting an upgraded anti-theft system to cars going back to around 2014 which was when the first version of their optional (then) and after 3 years old was a subscription, built in tracker were launched as part of the InControl Secure system. I had an attempt to steal both an 2010 Range Rover L322 and a 2011 Evoque from my driveway but thanks to my very elderly and nocturnal next door neighbour the thieves were caught red handed after she called the police. On both occasions I was out of the country, my car keys were not left in the house and both cars had after market trackers on them. I live in a small village in Central Scotland and on the night of the attempted theft of the RR 3 other Landies were stolen from local farms or off other drives in the village. There was a gang operating and the gang members were all caught and deported back to Pakistan………… a country that drives on the left like us.
Many years ago I posted a photo of the imported cars compound at the port of Port Klang in Malayasia - all the cars (Mercs, BMWs and Range Rovers) still had their U.K. number plates on them so I posted the photo on several owner’s forums - 2 Range Rover owners saw their cars in the photo!

Range Rover are high value and highly desirable, the insurance companies obviously know the full story, I read a recent post where an owner said he had to park his range rover in the garage and his fararri was on the driveway.
