I spent around 1-2 years practicing in my backyard. Didn’t have any defense and could only really punch/box. Recently like 5 months ago I started kicking. It got solid but now I take classes. If you do practice at home, WORK ON DEFENSE. More than you even do offense. It’s easier to learn offense than defense by yourself.

If you have a partner, either using a pool noodle or letting someone hit you lightly and practicing lightly.
If you are alone, than maybe you could just practice parrying the air or blocking the air. Maybe you could put something on the wall that sticks out and practice slips or parries. Or just pretend that the bag or the air is hitting back and try timing imaginary blocks.

Hey Nat, thank you for being such an inspiration to me, when I started practicing martial arts, specifically Taekwondo and Karate I didn't have the financial requirements to have a teacher or a dojo. I started watching your videos around 2 years ago and you've helped me a lot with my technique and form, before I used to think Martial arts could only be done in a dojo or with a teacher but anyone can do it, you just need to have the heart. Thank you Nat for being such a big help.

I learned one technique at home which I really liked, its called the spinning hook kick. I first trained to increase flexibility (3-4months). After that I followed every singe step with every minuscule detail (BVO taekwondo video, the man explains it really well).
Not going to the next step till I could repeat it a dozen of times flawlessly. For example, making sure that I spin on the ball of my foot, using my hands in the movement of spinning etc.
basically (trying) to master everything before the full execution of the kick. Now I take classes, I showed my technique to my new coach, and he says its quiet a decent spinning hook kick.
If you are a fast learner then you can pick up a few things online as well. But going to classes is usually recommended.

Really good to see I've been doing this right. When I trained in Japan, I would train at the dojo twice, sometimes three times a week, and I had a lot of space at home to work on my katas and such. Back here in the States, I'm always very confined on space and I can't really train at a dojo. I can do heavy bag at the gym, that's about it. I've done most of this stuff for years, but somehow the thought never occurred to me to practice full step strikes by stepping back. Game changer!

Sorry I'm only seeing this now, you guys.
I practice Muay Thai specifically. So I started off with an app called "Muay Thai Workout"
The program there teaches you the basics like movements, blocking, and different strikes. There's even a section to help you warm up.
As you progress, your body just flows along with it.
Personally, I got used to it and it became second nature for me - from shadow boxing, to getting my stance right. Eventually, you learn the necessary combos as well. Oh...plus a makeshift punching bag will really help you with landing those strikes.
SIDE NOTE: The reason why I decided to go self-taught was because I couldn't find a training center in my community that teaches Muay Thai. So I took it upon myself to learn the ways instead. 🙏🏽

I'm preparing myself training at home. After school and uni I'll move out to a new apartment near a dojo and do either Muay thai or Wrestling.

hey Nat thanks for the tip as per your knowledge on martial arts you're like awesome and can you release a series on martial arts or you know mma where all the best punches from boxing to best kicks from muay Thai cause imp from India and I've got a lotta issues here and i think u releasing a series on that on how to learn different martial arts to condense it in your own so we can learn it you and by releasing that series ur views and subscribers might skyrocket cause now everyone wants to learn and u already having such a huge amount of audience just might help it making a perfect sweet spot for you I'm like requesting as i am very eager to learn martial arts

Hey Nat I know this was a long time ago and you may have already found this out but I've heard a lot of negative things about better help such as their business model being unethical and exploitive. They might not be a group you want to promote but of course it's up to you. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
