@@lars7282Google “trust thermocline”. There might still be a lot of customers willing to put up with the ever-increasing prices, but the public sentiment has been turning against Disney parks for a while now even (or perhaps especially) among longtime die-hards. The fact that they haven’t collapsed yet is not evidence that things are going great for them and that they have nothing to change.

    Disney has always been expensive.

    • @srayj
      @srayj 27 дней назад +6

I don’t wanna slam Michael Eisner, but you realize that near the end of his tenure he was the one who decided that budget parks should be a thing and built Hong Kong, DCA and Paris Studios, but when Bob Iger took over, he actually invested in all of those parks to redo them and make them more fleshed out by adding new lands to Hong Kong and improving their castle, redoing DCA almost entirely to better fit with the Disney brand and now is overseeing an overhaul for Paris. There’s also the fact that in the late 90s early 2000s a lot of the animated movies were going downhill but Iger ushered in the second Renaissance with Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Frozen, Big Hero Six, Moana…not to mention repairing the relationship with Pixar that Eisner actually demolished. Eisner had a great run in the late 80s and early to mid 90’s completely revitalizing the company, but neither CEO is perfect.

The budget creep of all things connected to Disney has made it difficult for new people to find a way in. When I was a kid, our public library hosted free Disney programming on film, and The Wonderful World of Disney and Mickey Mouse Club were on broadcast TV. The parks were once in a lifetime or summer vacation trips, but you could sort of realistically daydream towards them.
I feel really bad for fans paywalled off from the things they love. I knew we were in big trouble when new Sesame Street episodes were headed for premium cable and streaming. A flipping PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) staple.

I wish Bob Iger would get booed by the fans at D23 when he walks on stage. He's not a creative person, and he is a crooked businessman who ruined a beloved company by acquiring all of these franchises, like Marvel and Star Wars, and milking them to death. Not to mention that he's also responsible for jacking up the prices at their theme parks while throwing creativity out the window. He needs to be fired and replaced by someone with more creativity.

And I was there I was a full blown Disney Adult I even worked at DLR when I was younger I drank the Kool-Aid I signed up for the cult and worshiped the mouse. BUT my family and I have not set foot in a Disney park since October 2019. It’s a lot about the cost and just the plain fact my daughters dont want to go. They are 18 and 11 grew up as Disney kids my oldest LOVES Hercules, but they don’t want us to spend that much and they wanted to go to Knotts, we even tried a cruise and went to San Francisco. They loved all of that. I’ve fallen out of love with Disney, we are not “too poor” for Disney. But Disney doesn’t care and they never will.😢 TBH it’s just not worth it. I went to the D23 Expo to celebrate the 100th anniversary, found out only privileged enter the panels and the entire thing was a money milking machine and never wanted to go there again.
Worst memory was being trapped in the parking deck waiting HOURS to get into the Disney parks panel just to say I went to ONE stinking panel and wasn’t allowed in when they opened the doors. In the time I wasted, I could have gone to Universal Studios and rode their rides and had fun.
What really sold me on how greedy Disney is was their real estate booth, yes, Disney has planned homes you can buy. Realtor rep said: “would you like to live a Disney experience for $500K?”
If I wasn’t so tired from my legs being stiff waiting, I would have said that unless they used a bio-lab to grow me a Princess Aurora bride or a lifetime supply of Disneyland tickets, I would rather have my money invested in Toho stock than fork over half a million just to have my house look like it is from Tron on the outside with generic interiors on the inside.

I’ll admit that the ticket sales system this year was awful, but as someone who has attended every single expo, I see what Disney was going for. In 2009, you were basically guaranteed a spot in the big panels, it was more a matter of where you were going to be seated. This is when the big panels were held in the arena. The problem was that the expo was so cool that the next one in 2011 exploded in popularity and Disney wasn’t prepared. Each subsequent year it has gotten bigger and busier. Disney has tried to respond by moving the big panels from the arena to hall H to seat more people. They tried to do wristbands and pre-planning panel attendance. They are trying to make the experience more accessible to more people and yes, that ironically means a paywall. My biggest concern is that if during the day there aren’t the big panels, pulling people off the floor to fill a 7000 seat panel that just means more people in lines for the smaller panels and the merchandise, and other experiences which is already crazy enough. I get your rant and you did mention that you actually profit off Disney, but the real people who are most hurt by this aren’t the bloggers and resellers who aren’t primarily there as fans, but us actual Disney lovers who miss out because of the greed not just of Disney, but of the people who want to attend the convention then gouge those who can’t get tickets or merch any other way.

Not to worry Dan, Disney already tried to do tokusatsu superhero shows (Power Rangers) and spat them out once they got their hands on their shiny new Marvel IPs back in ‘09.
I live in comfort knowing things like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai will never be touched by Disney because they failed to understand the appeal.

D23 2009 we were able to get super discounted tickets as CMs cuz they just weren't selling. I believe it was $5 a day! And in 2011 I think it went up to $15 a day. Still an amazing deal. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves 2009, 2011, and 2013. But in 2015, by day 3, we were sitting around an empty hall because we had literally already done everything. We decided then that we wouldn't be going back. Especially not once the prices had increased and lines still just got longer.

Disney from what I have heard has always been pricey, especially D23. I honestly wish we could have had a Hanna Barbera fan convention or a Will Vinton Claymation fan convention, that would have been amazing! Will Vinton deserved so much better, and I still refuse to watch anything Laika after knowing what happened to him. Claydream is a fantastic documentary and I can't recommend it enough!

The Gay character in *ParaNorman* doesn’t make up for the (metaphorical) screwing of Will Vinton out of his studio. I loved watching his specials on TV when I was a kid. There were some really good animated holiday specials in the 80s. I thought those would be as popular as *Charlie Brown, Frosty, Rudolph,* and *The Grinch* but now networks barely want those anymore!

I went. Once. It was almost one times too many. It was horribly, horribly orgsanized in terms of the line to get in, including just a couple of people checking tickets. Two. Limited sales floor area and about half were pin sellers. The exclusive store had another big line and forget about gettin in to see a panel. Rather than try and figure out where the end of the line was, I went to the nearby hotel for some beverages and waited. Total clusterf**k. Oh, and then the special Grand Wizard pass holders got in a half hour early and seemed to be scooping up tons of exclusives (I am guessing to sell on e-bay. D23 can just burn. Loves me some Wondercon, San Diego Comic-con, L.A. Comic-con, and the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, so it is not about the crowds, maybe a little about the cost, but just that it was an overall god-awful steaming huge pile of dinosaur poo experience.

If Disney just views its fan elite as a bunch of wallets, give them the closed wallet treatment. They want to make you help pay for the money they lost during COVID shutdown and various other recent income disasters. But they've still got plenty of money to play with, so this is a bad plan. They lose big time when they alienate the die-hard fans. So do the most grownup thing possible and refuse to shell out. If enough people do it, they'll notice. Hang tough like this guy.

Now it occurs to me that it probably isn't even the fault of the company that runs these conventions, but Disney as to why there's no longer comic content like there used to be. It feels like we're entering an era where I can refer to the "Disneyfication" of something and have that be a negative term in new and depressing ways.

As someone who has been in love with Disney since I was baby small (some of my earliest memories were at that park) Thank you for calling this crap out! Price gouging aside (which is despicable) creating an inconvenient/unsafe con experience goes to show that you aren't even getting the "Disney Magic" by spending the inflated amounts of money anymore. Disney has been hemorrhaging magic for years now and it's a vaguely micky shaped void.

This is inevitable with every company. The only reason why this one hurts so much is that the whole point of Disney was just to inspire wonder and fun in everyone. It was an adventure every time. Their movies made up all of our childhoods because they were inspired and bold and innovative, and able to capture our hearts and minds and imagination. They picked someone with none of those things to run the company. He’s just there to make shareholders money. So can anyone be surprised that these decisions are being made at the detriment of the company? You don’t have a suit run a creative effort lol….it was fun while it lasted.

I’ve been going to D23 since 2017 and this is the first year I consciously chose not to go because…
    1) They’re holding it in August, as opposed to September, which is peak vacation time for a lot of families. Plane tickets are HIGH at this time of year.
    2) They’re holding it in August, as opposed to September, which is A VERY HOT TIME TO BE IN LOS ANGELES. You think a convention center full of hot and sweaty cosplayers is bad in September? I don’t even want to THINK about it in August. They already have enough trouble keeping the AC high enough in September, do you really think it’ll be that much better in August?
    3) They’re holding it in August, as opposed to September, which means high volumes in the park. Why the heck would I want to go to Disneyland during a high volume season in the parks? Wait in line all day for panels and stores only to do the same in the parks? Absolutely not. Also, with there being higher volumes, the cost of tickets to the park are ALSO higher. Higher park AND plane tickets? Yeah, ima pass.
    4) They basically lost my interest when they announced some panels would be held at the Honda Center, which is on the OTHER SIDE OF TOWN.
    5) I was really underwhelmed at the last expo in 2022, so honestly, this was all enough for me to go, “Yeah, not this year.”

I would treat the D23 expo like San Diego Comic Con which is something I would do at least once in my lifetime if I had the time and money. If somehow someway I win the Powerball jackpot , which is $1.23 billion at the time I’m commenting on this video, I’d probably wouldn’t mind using a small amount of it to go this August just to get it off my bucket list. Like I said, I would probably do at least once if it gets too crowded and overwhelming to consider going again. But at least it would be fun to meet some fellow Disney fans and maybe even meet some RUclipsrs like Offhand Disney or others. Who knows what’s gonna happen to the expo when someone steps in after Bob Iger when his contract ends. Time will tell if it’ll get worse or better by then.

Tons of resellers taking away from fans, then DCA was selling Bash merch to non-Bash attendees on event days. I gave my 2 cents to Disney as part of my feedback on the event, but I sorely doubt they are listening. Supply of event merch for this year's Star Wars Nite was also terrible. Surely they have the analytics to show what sizes of merch are most popular?? All the most popular sizes were gone in literal minutes, and this on the 2nd night of the event.
